By and large, LTE is LTE -- it's just fast wireless, really, and there's not a lot to see. You know you want it, and you really don't need to be convinced. Amazingly, though, Samsung managed to impress us at Verizon's 4G demonstration area today with its three-pack of LTE-enabled devices, including a modified photo frame, ST1000 digicam, and a MID called "Pioneer" which we're told is little more than a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Mondi/">Mondi</a> with LTE swapped in place of WiMAX. Unlike some of the other demos we saw in the booth, Samsung was using actual integrated LTE chipsets -- the real deal, not a concept of what kind of stuff you <em>could</em> see in an LTE-connected world -- and if it weren't for the conspicuous "LTE" logo atop the ST1000, we would've been none the wiser. With the camera, you could instantly beam photos straight to the frame, and the Pioneer allowed you to shoot live video displayed immediately on the frame, all using an LTE base station as an intermediary. This stuff isn't as fanciful as it seems -- Verizon intends to have a couple dozen markets operating in 2010, and these are all examples of the kinds of things we could see if only Big Red decides to make it financially reasonable for us. Check out some pictures of the system in action in our gallery below, because let's be honest: unless you're lucky, odds are good this is the closest you're getting to a live 4G network in the next few months.<br />

It's one thing to see a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/mondi/">Samsung Mondi</a> and just imagine how sweet it'd feel between your palms, surfing on the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/21/clear-wimax-goes-live-in-las-vegas-samsung-mondi-ships-to-take/">blazing WiMAX superhighway</a> whilst providing an almost dangerous level of satisfaction. It's another to see just how chunky / slim / ostentatiously lofty it is when sized up against its greatest competition. The good folks over at <em>Pocketables</em> took the time to disconnect for a few brief moments in order to photograph the 4G-capable MID alongside a few other mobile internet devices, smartphones, UMPCs and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/26/sonys-mylo-2-only-available-in-refurbished-form-is-the-end-n/">defunct wannabes</a>. Heck, there's even a side-by-side with a stapler. Yeah, it's a can't miss piece, and it's all there for the taking in the read link.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handhelds/" rel="tag">Handhelds</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/07/samsungs-wimax-packin-mondi-sized-up-against-brothers-cousins/">Samsung's WiMAX-packin' Mondi sized up against brothers, cousins and enemies</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 07 Aug 2009 07:13:00 EST. <div align="left">Are you a high roller sitting pretty in Las Vegas right now, wondering what MID to pick up to take advantage of that fantabulous new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/21/clear-wimax-goes-live-in-las-vegas-samsung-mondi-ships-to-take/">CLEAR WiMax</a> service all the kids are talking about? No? Well, read on anyways -- you'll probably want to hear this. Apparently the kids at <em>PC World</em> have had the opportunity to put that Samsung Mondi (you know, the one we were <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/01/samsung-mondi-wimax-hands-on-with-video/">caught on video</a> with way back in April) through its paces. The verdict? Pretty "meh," it seems: the OS, WinMo 6.1, performs pretty much as you'd expect: all sorts of sluggish. And it appears that Sammy won't be upgrading to 6.5 when that becomes available, on account of all the work they put into getting the user experience <em>just right</em> on this guy (and it does look pretty good, truth be told). The home screen may support widgets, but according to the reviewer the selection is rather skint: IM, email, time / date / weather, Internet / Phone, appointments -- and that's pretty much it. Sure, Opera Mobile (with Flash Lite support) did its job admirably, but for $400 unsubsidized (or $300 subsidized) you can probably do better.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.slashgear.com/samsung-mondi-wimax-mid-previewed-keyboard-poor-wm6-1-sluggish-2350138/">SlashGear</a>]</div>

Looking for one more excuse to stay inside and avoid that sweltering Las Vegas heat this summer? Good news, gamblers -- Clearwire's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/10/clearwire-sneaks-wimax-into-las-vegas-wont-admit-it-until-summ/">CLEAR WiMAX service</a> has officially gone live across 638 square miles in the greater Las Vegas area. By the books, that's serving right around 1.7 million residents, not including the influx of tourists from other <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/16/clearwires-wimax-ordained-with-official-atlanta-launch/">WiMAX-equipped cities</a> that will undoubtedly <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/25/sprint-unveils-wimax-expansion-cities-devices-for-2009-and-2010/">take advantage</a>. To coincide with the launch, Samsung has also announced that its QWERTY-packin', DivX-friendly <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/26/samsungs-wimax-equipped-swd-m100-mid-outed-as-mondi/">Mondi</a> -- which we <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/01/samsung-mondi-wimax-hands-on-with-video/">toyed with</a> back at CTIA -- will be available in Vegas-area Best Buy and Clearwire outlets starting August 1st. Said MID arrives with 4G support, WiFi, GPS, 3 megapixel camera, a QWERTY keypad, a 4.3-inch touchscreen, Opera 9.5 and a customizable set of widgets on top of Windows Mobile. The device is supposedly available now through Samsung's website and "select Samsung authorized distributors," but we're having no lucky hunting one down at present time.<br /><br /><a href="http://newsroom.clearwire.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=214419&amp;p=irol-newsArticle&amp;ID=1309444&amp;highlight=">Read</a> - CLEAR in Las Vegas<br /><a href="http://www.businesswire.com/portal/site/google/?ndmViewId=news_view&amp;newsId=20090721005144&amp;newsLang=en">Read</a> - Samsung Mondi shipping<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/clear-wimax-goes-live-in-las-vegas-samsung-mondi-ships-to-take-advantage/">CLEAR WiMAX goes live in Las Vegas, Samsung Mondi ships to take advantage</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/clear-wimax-goes-live-in-las-vegas-samsung-mondi-ships-to-take-advantage/#2156792"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/07/samsung-mondi-wimax-6_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/clear-wimax-goes-live-in-las-vegas-samsung-mondi-ships-to-take-advantage/#2156793"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/07/samsung-mondi-wimax-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/clear-wimax-goes-live-in-las-vegas-samsung-mondi-ships-to-take-advantage/#2156794"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/07/samsung-mondi-wimax-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/clear-wimax-goes-live-in-las-vegas-samsung-mondi-ships-to-take-advantage/#2156795"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/07/samsung-mondi-wimax-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/clear-wimax-goes-live-in-las-vegas-samsung-mondi-ships-to-take-advantage/#2156796"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/07/samsung-mondi-wimax-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/samsung/" rel="tag">Samsung</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/windows-mobile/" rel="tag">Windows Mobile</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/wimax/" rel="tag">WiMAX</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/21/clear-wimax-goes-live-in-las-vegas-samsung-mondi-ships-to-take/">CLEAR WiMAX goes live in Las Vegas, Samsung Mondi ships to take advantage</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 21 Jul 2009 10:06:00 EST. The device is supposedly available now through Samsung's website and "select Samsung authorized distributors," but we're having no lucky hunting one down at present time.<br /><br /><a href="http://newsroom.clearwire.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=214419&amp;p=irol-newsArticle&amp;ID=1309444&amp;highlight=">Read</a> - CLEAR in Las Vegas<br /><a href="http://www.businesswire.com/portal/site/google/?ndmViewId=news_view&amp;newsId=20090721005144&amp;newsLang=en">Read</a> - Samsung Mondi shipping<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/clear-wimax-goes-live-in-las-vegas-samsung-mondi-ships-to-take-advantage/">CLEAR WiMAX goes live in Las Vegas, Samsung Mondi ships to take advantage</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/clear-wimax-goes-live-in-las-vegas-samsung-mondi-ships-to-take-advantage/#2156792"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/07/samsung-mondi-wimax-6_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/clear-wimax-goes-live-in-las-vegas-samsung-mondi-ships-to-take-advantage/#2156793"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/07/samsung-mondi-wimax-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/clear-wimax-goes-live-in-las-vegas-samsung-mondi-ships-to-take-advantage/#2156794"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/07/samsung-mondi-wimax-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/clear-wimax-goes-live-in-las-vegas-samsung-mondi-ships-to-take-advantage/#2156795"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/07/samsung-mondi-wimax-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/clear-wimax-goes-live-in-las-vegas-samsung-mondi-ships-to-take-advantage/#2156796"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/07/samsung-mondi-wimax-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cellphones/" rel="tag">Cellphones</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/wireless/" rel="tag">Wireless</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/21/clear-wimax-goes-live-in-las-vegas-samsung-mondi-ships-to-take/">CLEAR WiMAX goes live in Las Vegas, Samsung Mondi ships to take advantage</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 21 Jul 2009 10:06:00 EST. <div align="left">While we caught this at Mobile World Congress earlier this year, Samsung officially launched its WiMAX / WiFi Mondi at CTIA today. Samsung's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/26/samsungs-wimax-equipped-swd-m100-mid-outed-as-mondi/">SWD-M100</a> MID runs Windows Mobile -- and we have to say that it looks really polished -- with the transitions between homescreen panels being particularly stunning -- check the vid to see it in action. While thin, the popout lower lip keypad is a tough thing to use, the width of the keypad itself and the positioning of the d-pad make it all seem a bit awkward to use. We do like the 4.3-inch display, though suspect it may prove to be a tad power hungry once this gets a little more real on <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Clear/">Clear</a>'s WiMAX network. Follow on for a short vid and a handful of pics of us playing with this big glossy thing.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/samsung-mondi-wimax-hands-on-with-video/">Samsung Mondi WiMAX hands-on with video</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/samsung-mondi-wimax-hands-on-with-video/#1466425"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/04/ctia2009_samsungmondi005_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/samsung-mondi-wimax-hands-on-with-video/#1466424"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/04/ctia2009_samsungmondi004_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/samsung-mondi-wimax-hands-on-with-video/#1466423"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/04/ctia2009_samsungmondi008_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/samsung-mondi-wimax-hands-on-with-video/#1466422"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/04/ctia2009_samsungmondi007_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/samsung-mondi-wimax-hands-on-with-video/#1466421"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/04/ctia2009_samsungmondi006_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /></div>

Although apparently not on its site just yet, it looks like <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Samsung/">Samsung</a>'s RSS feed has unleashed the first official pic of that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/WiMAX/">WiMAX</a>-enabled <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/18/wimax-equipped-samsung-swd-m100d-mid-spotted-at-mwc/">SWD-M100 MID</a> we spotted at MWC as well as revealed a catchier name: Mondi. The device will utilize Clearwire's Mobile WiMAX network simply dubbed "Clear." Last we heard it was running Windows Mobile 6.1, but seeing as its sporting that dedicated Windows button required for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/WinMo65/">WinMo 6.5</a>, that all could change before it's release. Speaking of which, mum's the word on pricing or availability, we're afraid.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.phonescoop.com/news/item.php?n=4151">Phonescoop</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handhelds/" rel="tag">Handhelds</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/26/samsungs-wimax-equipped-swd-m100-mid-outed-as-mondi/">Samsung's WiMAX-equipped SWD-M100 MID outed as Mondi</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 26 Mar 2009 17:31:00 EST.
