  • Chromebooks can get cheaper thanks to new support for a low-end chip

You can pick up a Chromebook for a dirt-cheap $200, if you know where to shop. However, there are now signs that these Google-powered portables could get even cheaper. MediaTek has contributed code to Chromium OS (the base for Chrome OS) for a test device with an entry-level ARM Cortex-A7 processor -- a big step down from the relatively inexpensive Cortex-A15/A7 hybrid that Samsung uses, not to mention the Intel Celeron chips in other Chrome devices. Theoretically, this leads to Chromebooks and Chromeboxes that cost significantly less than $200, albeit after a big speed hit. Just as with phones and tablets, a Cortex-A7 system is likely to be pretty sluggish.

  • WoW Archivist: Life and death

WoW Archivist explores the secrets of World of Warcraft's past. What did the game look like years ago? Who is etched into WoW's history? What secrets does the game still hold? World of Warcraft is without a doubt a massive cultural phenomenon unlike any other online game to date. It has given us countless hours of entertainment, introduced friends and couples to one another, and touched the lives of millions. For some, the game has made a bad situation better, or even -- in at least one case -- possibly saved their lives. For others, it has cost them everything. Fair warning: This column describes some intense and tragic events. Hans and the moose In 2007, twelve-year-old Hans Jørgen Olsen of Norway and his sister (ten) decided to take a shortcut through a garden on their way to school. The choice would prove fateful. A moose had wandered into the area and promptly took a dislike to the children. "It ran straight towards us when it saw us," Hans told Norwegian news station Nettavisen. "I screamed at it to scare the moose, but I soon realized that it was not going to stop. Then I turned and ran and ran until I couldn't run faster." The charging moose caught up to Hans and slammed into him. His backpack cushioned the blow, but the impact knocked Hans to the ground. Unsatisfied, the moose remained. "We held eye contact for a while," Hans said, "and then it suddenly struck me."

Last night on the Colbert Report there was an interview with olympian Seth Wescott. Seen in passing footage is the image above. Yes, fans of WoW and members of the Colbert Nation, Ghostcrawler promise of a moose has gone to the Olympics. We have no idea who the creator of the sign is, and we don't have any idea if he actually was given a moose -- however I'm sure Ghostcrawler will want to hand deliver him one after reaching international fame and stardom from this brief moment on the Colbert Report. A larger image, full of more truthiness, can be viewed here. You can also view the entire Colbert Report episode over at Hulu. The moose sign comes in around 20:43. Many thanks to Sean for the tip!

Kissybear is back! The amazing Ding! will return and we will no longer have to cringe on Sunday mornings. Who's excited? We also have some great comics today, including a newbie to the list that was tipped in last week's comments: Check out the latest from Cru the Dwarf. Rooster Teeth: Come Here Often Continued, Come Here Often 3, and Come Here Often 4. Thanks for the tip, Oozebull! Check out NPC's WoW version of Dressup. Take A Break From the Cold with Dark Legacy Comics. The latest from Flintlocke vs the Horde got me laughing. Shakes and Fidget got an update! GU Comics: Suggestive. LFG. I love the latest from NoObz! Translatoxx ftw. Woot! Kissybear is back! Check out the latest from Teh Gladiators. Patch 3.1: Double the Specs, Double the Fun, from The Adventures of Disgraph T. Dwarf. I was wondering when this form would come up! Also, if you ignore the antlers, it sort of looks like something that Dr. Seuss would create. World of Warcraft, eh?

  • The gear you'll never delete

We all have pieces of gear that we don't want to do away with. For me, it's mainly my Quel'Serrar sword – thousands of gold spent on it pre-bc makes it (adjusted for inflation) the most expensive item I've ever purchased. I'm never going to be getting rid of it. I know that others have the same sentiments. For instance pictured above is the hat of one of my good friends in game. She's had those moose antlers for about 2 ½ years from Onyxia. I know that she'll never get rid of them, and if she did... well, our guild would probably have to gdisband. There's something nostalgic about keeping around old gear. It provides a memory of "the good old days" when hitting 60 actually meant something. Those old pieces of gear meant that you had accomplished something epic when epics weren't free. Our old epic pieces of gear are a testament to a time when the game was still new and the wilds of Azeroth were really wild.

We had a gigantic year at WoW Insider-- from January 1st to December 31st, we've posted over 4,500 stories here on this very site, about nearly every facet of the World of Warcraft (and you guys didn't slouch, either-- we had over 150,000 comments on the site in 2007). We've reported on everything from hearthstone soaps to Norweigan mooses, and everything from Arena PvP to Zul'Aman. We've posted guides, rumors, insights, jokes, and everything else we could find connected to this game that we all play (17 hours a week on average). And seeing as 2007 is just about to end, we figured it would be fun to take a look at the year behind us, and list the top ten stories that we reported on during that time. From comedic to controversial, these ten stories run the gamut, and they also comprise the most important news that happened in the World of Warcraft this year. As a staff, we collected all of the biggest stories of the year, and then rated them from one to ten.So click the link below to finish out this year, and check out WoW Insider's Top Ten WoW Stories of 2007. Before the year ends, let's take a look back at what happened in Azeroth and the culture surrounding it.

  • Boy attacked by moose "feigns death," thanks WoW

var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/gaming_news/Boy_Attacked_By_Moose_Feigns_Death_Thanks_WoW'; A Norwegian news site is reporting that a young boy and his sister were attacked by a moose (same thing happened to my sister once), and the boy reportedly "taunted' the moose away from his sister, and then feigned death, causing the moose to lose aggro and leave. "Just like you learn in level 30 in World of Warcraft," the boy is reportedly quoted as saying.Cynic that I am, I find it hard believing any of this is true at all-- maybe one of our Norwegian readers (and I know we have them, because I met two at BlizzCon) can let us know whether "Nettavisen" is to be trusted as a source or not. But even if it is true, I'm just as hesitant to jump to praise WoW for supposedly helping as I am to condemn it for supposedly hurting.Still, I'm glad the kid came out of it OK, and if WoW is to thank, all the better. Now if only he'd been able to control his DPS in the first place, he'd never have aggroed at all.[Via TN]
