The Huawei P30 Pro’s cameras are miraculous

Huawei wants to establish a new smartphone imaging frontier (again) with the P30 Pro, and it looks like it's succeeding. With up to 10X zoom, a wide-angle lens, a similarly killer night-shooting mode and a time-of-flight camera that might be this year's secret weapon, can all this hardware best the Pixel 3's software smarts? Immediately after the big on-stage reveal, I took the P30 Pro to the streets of Paris, because a) the Eiffel Tower is very zoom-friendly, and b) the nighttime streets are pretty darn gorgeous.

Huawei might know how to build photo-centric smartphones, but the concept of web pages is apparently beyond its grasp. As spotted by Evan Blass, it unveiled an event page for the phone that reveals pretty much everything you'd want to know ahead of its March 26th Paris Event. As expected, it'll have a quad camera array -- with the main packing a 40-megapixel sensor -- and 10X hybrid zoom, doubling the P20 Pro's 5X zoom.

Huawei P30 Pro turns up a month early in prototype form

You might not have to wait until Huawei's March 26th event to see the P30 series in the flesh -- you may be looking at it right now. Digital Trends says it obtained a behind-closed-doors peek at a P30 Pro prototype that offers numerous clues about the flagship phone. The design appears to be a subtle refresh of the P20 Pro with a unified camera hump and tapered edges. However, there are hints of powerful camera features. DT noted that the "Summitor" placeholder labeling on the back is eerily close to Leica's "Summitar" 50mm lens badging, potentially referencing a rumored 10X zoom camera. That would line up with a Huawei event teaser clip showing zoomed-in snapshots.

Huawei's P30 series will debut on March 26th

Huawei's upcoming flagship phones won't be popping up at Mobile World Congress. The tech giant has announced a special P30 series launch event in Paris, which will take place on March 26th, 2019 -- almost a full month after MWC wraps up in Barcelona. Huawei staged a similar event for the P20 last year, also in Paris and also a month after the mobile convention, so this event didn't exactly come out of left field.

Huawei P30 might revive the headphone jack

As a rule, smartphone makers who've ditched the 3.5mm headphone port haven't rushed to bring it back, whether out of technical necessity or simple pride. Huawei, however, might be the exception to the rule. OnLeaks and 91Mobiles have produced leak-based renders of the upcoming P30 that hint at the return of the headphone jack, nestled neatly at the bottom near the USB-C port. If you're not in a rush to embrace wireless audio, this could be your flagship phone of choice.

Are you a businessperson in search of a portable computing device? Then Samsung claims to have a few new options designed with just you in mind in the form of its new P80 Premium and P30 Essential series laptops, and NB30 Pro netbook. On the laptop side of things, the P80 and P30 series are each available in 14-inch and 15-inch versions, with the P80 models packing a Core i5 processor, 320GB hard drive and a docking connector, while the P30 models dial things back to a Core i3 and a 250GB hard drive. As you might expect, the NB30 Pro (pictured above) is simply a slightly updated version of Samsung's regular NB30 netbook, with it boasting an Atom N450 processor, a 160GB hard drive, up to 2GB of RAM, and Windows 7 Professional for an OS. Look for it to run you $519, while the P30 and P80 will start at $849 and $999, respectively -- all should be available by the end of the month. Head on past the break for the complete press release.

We already knew that ASUS's P30 laptop (or P30A, as it's now apparently known) would come equipped with Intel's latest and greatest anti-theft technology, but ASUS has only just now gotten fully official with the laptop itself, and dished out all the rest of the specs that at least some folks have no doubt been waiting for. This being a full-on ultraportable, you won't exactly get a ton of power, but you can expect a snazzy LED-backlit 13.3-inch display (1366x768 resolution), along with a low-voltage 1.4GHz Core 2 Duo processor, up to 4GB of RAM, your choice of 250GB or 320GB hard drives (in either 5,400 or 7,200 rpm variations), a DVD drive, HDMI out, a 4-cell battery, and even some built-in 3G -- all in a package that weighs in at just over three pounds. Still no official word on a price, but it looks like you should be able to pick one up any day now -- or you could just wait for a similarly thin-and-light and slightly more stylish Acer Timeline, your choice.[Via Electronista]

  • ASUS equips P30 and P80 laptops with Intel's Anti-Theft Technology

Remember Intel's Anti-Theft Technology that debuted around this time last year? You know, that wicked cool invention that you've heard absolutely nothing about ever since? Evidently it's still alive and kickin', as ASUS has just announced that two of its lappies will come loaded with it. The P30 and P80 will both arrive with the so-called theft deterrent system, enabling owners to send a "poison pill" (it's words, not ours) remotely, rendering their computer inoperable by "comprehensively shutting it down." If you manage to reacquire it in one piece, a passphrase can be inputted in order to reactivate things. Still, we have to wonder how this will really detract thieves from snapping up unattended machines -- we mean, do they really stop to check out the anti-theft software before wheeling away with your rig? We're guessing not.[Via HotHardware]

  • Toshiba readies three 1080p Camileo camcorders for Europe

We can't say with any level of certainty why Toshiba chose to announce its new Camileo after CES and before CeBIT, but whatever the reason, we're sure it's a good one. Introduced today over in Germany are three new camcorders, all of which boast simple controls for the technologically challenged and easy uploading to YouTube. The whole lot captures in gorgeous 1080p, and they all feature a handy HDMI output for showing off clips as soon as you snag them. The higher-end Camileo P30 arrives with 128MB of internal storage, an SD card slot, a 3-inch LCD monitor and a 5x optical zoom; the H20 steps down to a 2.5-inch display, while the S10 remains mostly mysterious. As for the bits that matter most, the S10 and P30 will be available early next month for €149 ($197) / €199 ($263), respectively, while the H20 can be snapped up now for €249 ($329).[Via Stuff]

  • Creative Travel Sound PoPz P30

We never got too much into the whole portable speakers thing (which might be why we were so wholly unenthused by the K5), but we're always down for a game of find-the-camouflaged gadget. Today's subject: an odd teardrop shaped pouch which might look like it carries CDs (or UMDs), but actually splits open to reveal a pair of Creative speakers. It's their Travel Sound PoPz P30 travel speakers, which are being sold in japan for ¥3,980 (about $35), and do actually look kind of fun in that whole moth disguised as an owl kind of way.
