Sure, the PSP is still a mighty attractive piece of hardware. "Handsome," you might say, but that heart-pounding allure is all but gone these days. While we wait a few more years for Sony to rectify that with a PSP 2, we can drool over another mod by "f00 f00." This time he's managed to squeeze a working VU Meter onto the back of the ever-moddable machine. Sure, it's not a revolution in the world of PSP hacking, but it's impressive and somehow comforting in its own we-guess-the-PSP-is-still-pretty-cool sort of way. Video is after the break.

Who knows what it is about the PSP that engenders such a loyal following of hackers -- both on the hardware and software side. Some of the hardware hacks we've seen are no doubt more impressive than others, but they're all united in a common disregard for warranties and for the most part a deep affection for LEDs. The first PSP Go mod we've seen, done up by roro3030 over at AcidMods, keeps things simple with some strategic, tasteful white LED placement. It's all internally powered and pretty seamless, and provides a nice jumping off point for a community that will be no-doubt eager to consume the PSP Go as a new challenge -- even if the rest of us are busy making frowny faces at that endlessly derided price tag. Video of the lit-up Go is after the break.

If you've got a spare PSP lying around -- and who doesn't -- then we've stumbled upon a nifty little hack that lets you utilize a 360 controller to play it. Why on earth you would want to control a PSP with an Xbox 360 controller is another story. Documented by Jay on the MaxConsole forums, the hack involves the Xbox 360 wireless receiver for PC and a decent amount of software trickery. While the hack is certainly novel and the Xbox 360 controller is more comfortable than the PSP controls, we'd like to see someone attach the two devices together. After all, it's not like you can sit too far away from a PSP and still enjoy the wireless experience.Get to it, Fanboy Nation![Via Engadget]

  • "Pandora's Battery" hack promises to unbrick all bricked PSPs

The PSP has seen plenty of hacks in its still relatively short lifespan, but it looks like this latest one from the folks at N00bz could well be one of the biggest, with it promising to do nothing short of unbricking all bricked PSPs. The key to that daunting task, it seems, was to turn an ordinary PSP battery into a so-called "service mode trigger battery," resulting in something N00bz has appropriately dubbed "Pandora's Battery." To make one of your own, you'll of course need a spare battery, as well as a working homebrew-enabled PSP to set things up with. After running a few programs on it and your PC, you should then have a battery/memory stick combo that'll let you get any PSP back up and running with the v1.5 firmware. Those looking to give it a shot can hit up the link below for the full instructions and necessary downloads.[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Today's most-watched YouTube game video shows the result of a slick dual-analog mod for the PSP. Well, sort of ...We can't tell if the right analog-style stick is inputing variable speeds, or if it's just mirroring the digital face buttons. (We're leaning towards digital input through the analog-type stick.) Still, it's a cool hack, and your right thumb won't be jealous of the already-mentioned left-stick hack.See the video after the break.
