After an all-too-long wait, two of ESPN's most popular sports shows finally made the jump to high definition today and we couldn't help but grab a few snaps to see what they look like in 720p. One interesting note is that the network is simply letterboxing the same 16:9 feed for SD viewers, which probably explains the large font on Pardon The Interruption's upcoming stories ticker. Naturally, Woody decided to work in an HD reference nearly every time he was up on Around the Horn today, but once the jokes and the background messages fade, we'll still be appreciating the much, much better looking highlights. Sports fans were promised high definition versions of Pardon the Interruption and Around the Horn this fall, and it looks like we will get them. Not that we really need to see Jay Marriotti or Dan LeBatard in 720p, but beyond just expanding the Adande Lounge to 16:9, we should see more sports highlights in their highest quality as Tony Reali, host of ATH and Stat Boy on PTI tweeted yesterday they will both upgrade to HDTV-ready formats beginning September 27. No word yet on Jim Rome is Burning, but since that's filmed in LA at an entirely different facility it's tough to tell when ESPN might make its full afternoon lineup HD.

A combination of Pardon the Interruption, Around the Horn, Project Runway and the Hallmark Channel may seem unlikely, but the one tie binding all of these is their plans to switch to HDTV broadcasts in 2010. ESPN made a low key announcement that its two afternoon sports news discussions will be moving to the ABC News studios in D.C. next fall. Experiencing Tony and Michael's baldness in 720p should be nice, as well as a widescreen layout of the ATH panel, but clearly the biggest benefit should be the inclusion of high-definition highlight clips during the shows. Ditto for the models on Project Runway, while the Hallmark Channel is ready to broadcast its... unique wealth of TV movies in HD, finally joining its sister network Hallmark Movie Channel which made the jump back in 2008.
