    Google wins fight with Labor Department over pay gap data

    Google appears to have emerged mostly triumphant in its fight with the Department of Labor over supplying pay gap data. An administrative law judge has ruled that the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs overstepped its boundaries by asking for as much data as it did when trying to address reported pay disparities between men and women. According to the decision, the OFCCP's requests were "intrusive on employee privacy, unduly burdensome and insufficiently focused." To put it succinctly, the Office couldn't justify why it needed as much info as it wanted.

    Google says its own analysis shows 'no gender pay gap'

    In a new post on pay equity, Google VP Eileen Naughton says the company was "taken aback" by the US Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) accusation that it paid women less than men, especially since the regulator gave no data to back up the claim. To counter it, the company supplied its own study that it called "extremely scientific and robust," showing that women and men are paid equally at the firm with a 95 percent confidence rating.

    Tech companies may employ a smaller percentage of women than other US industries, but at least they pay them as well as men. Microsoft and Facebook marked "Equal Pay Day" (today) by confirming they had hit that milestone. "I'm proud to share that at Facebook, men and women earn the same," says Facebook VP Lori Matloff Goler. Microsoft VP Kathleen Hogan also declares that, "today, for every $1 earned by men, our female employees in the U.S. earn 99.8 cents at the same job title and level."
