Its mandate, no less, is to deliver the image quality and control of a DSLR inside the discreet body of a compact, aiming to attract serious photographers who want to travel light or supplement their main kit. That's why the G1 X houses a substantial 1.5-inch CMOS sensor, stretching to around 80 percent of the size of APS-C, along with an anti-minimalist array of dials, knobs and buttons to provide quick access to manual settings. It also explains why the G1 X is 30 percent heavier than both its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/30/canon-powershot-g12-scores-predictably-glowing-review/">evolutionary ancestor</a> and some of its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/29/olympus-pen-e-p3-micro-four-thirds-camera-review/">competitors</a>, and why its price tag is equally hefty: $800, which is SLR-like in all the wrong ways. We've had this shooter long enough to gather our thoughts, but as to whether it deserves a smile or a snarl, you'll have to read on to find out.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-g1-x-review/">Canon G1 X review</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-g1-x-review/#4812049"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/02/2012-02-10800px-1328967985_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-g1-x-review/#4812048"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/02/2012-02-10800px-2-1328967983_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-g1-x-review/#4812047"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/02/2012-02-10800px-1-1328967982_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-g1-x-review/#4812041"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/02/2012-02-10800px-16_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-g1-x-review/#4812026"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/02/2012-02-10800px-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/13/canon-powershot-g1-x-review/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Canon PowerShot G1 X review</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/13/canon-powershot-g1-x-review/">Canon PowerShot G1 X review</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 13 Feb 2012 16:00:00 EST. Leading the charge for the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/23/canon-announces-powershot-sx150-is-elph-310-510-hs-point-and/">ELPH</a> lineup is the 530 HS. Along with the 320 HS, it features the ability to wirelessly upload images to Canon's online portal, where users may then post their latest captures to Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. The ELPH 530 HS features a 12x optical zoom lens paired with a 10 megapixel sensor and is expected to retail for $349 in April. Meanwhile, the 320 HS delivers a 5x optical zoom lens and a 16.1 megapixel sensor. It'll carry a $280 price tag and is set to hit stores in March. Both ELPH models feature Canon's DIGIC 5 image processor, capture 1080p video and include a 3.2-inch LCD touchscreen.<br /><br />Those who roll <em>Rear Window</em> style may want to check out <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/canon">Canon's</a> new SX260 HS, which packs a 25mm wide-angle lens that boasts up to 20x optical zoom. Like the latest ELPH's, it also offers the DIGIC 5 processor and captures 1080p video. Unique to the SX260 HS, it features GPS for location tagging and a burst shooting mode that captures a continuous 10.3 frames per second. It'll be available in March for $349 and is set to come in black, green and red finishes. Lastly, the D20 offers up a few <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/08/canons-powershot-d10-adventure-cam-shot-with-a-bazooka-in-this/">ruggedized</a> features for outdoor enthusiasts. It features underwater shooting abilities (including a specific macro mode), and is also said to be shock-proof and freeze-proof -- no mention of it tolerating heat, though. The D20 incorporates a 12.1 megapixel sensor, captures 1080p video and features a 5x optical zoom lens. It also offers GPS, but unlike the other cameras here, it uses the DIGIC 4 image processor. If you're considering the D20 for your next adventure, it'll be available in May for $349. You'll discover more about these four additions in the PR, after the break.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-powershot-d20-elph-320-and-elph-530/">Canon PowerShot D20, ELPH 530 &amp; 320</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-powershot-d20-elph-320-and-elph-530/#4806932"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/02/canond20bluefront-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-powershot-d20-elph-320-and-elph-530/#4799189"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/02/2012-02-0601d20bluebackaseries_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-powershot-d20-elph-320-and-elph-530/#4799201"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/02/2012-02-0601elph-320-hsblack01aseries_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-powershot-d20-elph-320-and-elph-530/#4799208"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/02/2012-02-0601elph-320-hsblue01aseries_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-powershot-d20-elph-320-and-elph-530/#4799214"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/02/2012-02-0601elph-320-hsred01aseries_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/07/canon-introduces-four-new-powershot-cameras/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Canon welcomes ELPH 530 HS / 320 HS, SX260 HS and D20 to PowerShot lineup</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/07/canon-introduces-four-new-powershot-cameras/">Canon welcomes ELPH 530 HS / 320 HS, SX260 HS and D20 to PowerShot lineup</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 07 Feb 2012 00:00:00 EST. Think again, as the company is updating its PowerShot A-Series shooters with six new models in a variety of colors. All the cameras pack a 16-megapixel sensor, 28mm wide angle lens and can take 720p video. First up is the A4000 IS, which brings <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/image%20stabilization/">image stabilization</a>, 8X optical zoom and a 3-inch LCD for $200 later this month. The A3400 IS and A2400 IS make their debuts in March, and bring the same image stabilization as the 4000, but have a lesser 5X optical zoom. Additionally, the 3400 packs a 3-inch touchscreen LCD and costs $180, while the 2400 gets a smaller non-touchscreen 2.7-inch LCD and retails for $150. Meanwhile, the A2300 has the same specs as the 2400, minus the image stabilization, and will cost ten bucks less than its brother when it drops next month. Finally, the PowerShot A1300 and A810 each come with 5X optical zoom and a 2.7-inch LCD when they debut in April, with the A810 priced at $110 and the A1300 available for $120.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-powershot-a-series/">Canon PowerShot A-Series</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-powershot-a-series/#4799016"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/02/2012-02-0601a810black01aseries_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-powershot-a-series/#4799038"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/02/2012-02-0602a810black02aseries_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-powershot-a-series/#4799060"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/02/2012-02-0603a810black03aseries_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-powershot-a-series/#4799017"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/02/2012-02-0601a810red01aseries_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-powershot-a-series/#4799039"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/02/2012-02-0602a810red02aseries_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/07/canon-unveils-new-powershot-a-series-cameras-brings-image-stabi/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Canon unveils new PowerShot A-Series cameras, brings image stabilization to its entry-level</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/07/canon-unveils-new-powershot-a-series-cameras-brings-image-stabi/">Canon unveils new PowerShot A-Series cameras, brings image stabilization to its entry-level</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 07 Feb 2012 00:00:00 EST. This week, Canon reinforced its commitment to not producing a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/05/canon-restores-camera-production-in-japan-hints-at-mirrorless-m/">mirrorless interchangeable lens camera</a> by launching the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/09/canon-powershot-g1-x/">PowerShot G1 X</a>. The company's latest G-series camera is by far the most powerful, and most expensive model, ringing up at $799.99 -- approaching (and in some cases exceeding) DSLR territory. Its pricing and spec list imply that the G1 X could be a DSLR competitor, but is it? No, not by a long shot. Instead, the company's most powerful compact cam is designed to be a companion to cameras in Canon's DSLR line, acting as a second, third or fourth shooter to professional photographers. The G1 X includes a 1.5-inch (18.7 x 14mm) 14.3 megapixel sensor -- which puts it in almost the same class as APS-C models, but with a fixed 4x, 28-112mm optical zoom lens and a compact camera form factor, it's a completely different beast. So is the G1 X able to justify its nearly $800 price tag? Join us past the break to find out. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-unveils-powershot-g1-x-huge-14-3-megapixel-sensor-12-800-iso-800-price-tag/">Canon PowerShot G1 X first hands-on</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-unveils-powershot-g1-x-huge-14-3-megapixel-sensor-12-800-iso-800-price-tag/#4728622"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/img2261_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-unveils-powershot-g1-x-huge-14-3-megapixel-sensor-12-800-iso-800-price-tag/#4728623"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/img2262_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-unveils-powershot-g1-x-huge-14-3-megapixel-sensor-12-800-iso-800-price-tag/#4728624"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/img2264_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-unveils-powershot-g1-x-huge-14-3-megapixel-sensor-12-800-iso-800-price-tag/#4728625"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/img2270_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-unveils-powershot-g1-x-huge-14-3-megapixel-sensor-12-800-iso-800-price-tag/#4728626"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/img2271_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/09/canon-powershot-g1-x-first-hands-on-video/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Canon PowerShot G1 X first hands-on (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/09/canon-powershot-g1-x-first-hands-on-video/">Canon PowerShot G1 X first hands-on (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 09 Jan 2012 13:43:00 EST. Not taking cues from a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/fujifilm">certain other manufacturer</a> that unveiled well over a dozen models last week, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Canon/">Canon</a> is adding just two cameras to its PowerShot ELPH family, in addition to the just-announced <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/09/canon-powershot-g1-x/">PowerShot G1 X</a>. The 10.1 megapixel ELPH 520 HS and 16 megapixel ELPH 110 HS both include high-sensitivity CMOS sensors, sensitivity up to ISO 3200, 1080p video capture and 3-inch LCDs. The pricier 520 HS has a 12x wide-angle (28mm) optical zoom lens and can capture burst images at 6.8 frames-per-second, while the 110HS has a 5x optical zoom lens starting at 24mm at the wide angle and can snap up to 5.8 frames per second.<br />
<br />
A new Face ID feature enables the camera to store up to 12 faces in the camera, letting you prioritize focus and exposure for recognized subjects -- if a child and parent are recognized in the same photo, the child can be set with a higher priority, so they're always in focus. If an unfamiliar face (perhaps that of a stranger) appears in the background, it won't receive focus priority. A Sleeping Face Recognition mode will turn off the flash, assist beam and camera sound if it detects that you're attempting to photograph someone as they sleep. Ready to replace your point-and-shoot? Come March, you'll be able to pick up the 520 HS in black, silver, red and blue for $300, or the 110 HS for $250 this February. Jump past the break for the Canon PR.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/09/canon-powershot-ELPH 520 HS-ELPH 110 HS/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Canon swings by the North Pole on the way to CES, grows the ELPH family by two</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/09/canon-powershot-ELPH 520 HS-ELPH 110 HS/">Canon swings by the North Pole on the way to CES, grows the ELPH family by two</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 09 Jan 2012 09:00:00 EST. Well, we're not getting that today -- if ever. Instead, Canon has introduced a large sensor model to its PowerShot G-series of cameras. The G1 X joins (but doesn't replace) the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/14/canon-g12-arrives-brings-hd-video-with-it/">G12</a>, which previously held the title as the company's largest point-and-shoot. While the camera itself is not any smaller, the G1 X's 1.5-inch 14.3 megapixel CMOS sensor is what really makes it unique, offering a sensor size nearly as large as the APS-C found in larger mirrorless models and many full-size DSLRs. Larger sensors require larger lenses and therefore larger body sizes, but for professional and advanced amateur photographers, the benefits typically outweigh the inconvenience associated with carrying a bulkier model.<br /><br />With a large 1.5-inch (18.7 x 14mm) sensor, the Canon G1 X should theoretically be able to capture higher quality images in low light (with sensitivity boosted to ISO 12,800), and with more shallow depth of field -- the 4x 28mm lens has an aperture range of f/2.8-16, making it ideal for everything from sports action to landscape shoots. The "EOS-like" feature set includes 1080p video, 14-bit RAW and JPEG capture and full compatibility with Speedlite flashes and other accessories. A 3-inch 922k-dot LCD is on the rear with full tilt and swivel, and a mode dial up top provides direct access to shooting modes, including full manual. The G1 X is scheduled to ship in February for $799.99, but check back here next week for the hands-on, live from the show floor <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/06/were-live-from-ces-2012/">at CES</a>. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-powershot-g1-x/">Canon PowerShot G1 X</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-powershot-g1-x/#4720697"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/canong1x001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-powershot-g1-x/#4720698"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/canong1x002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-powershot-g1-x/#4720699"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/canong1x003_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-powershot-g1-x/#4720700"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/canong1x004_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-powershot-g1-x/#4720701"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/canong1x005_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><br /><strong>Update</strong>: The G1 X has landed in our hands, you can check out the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/09/canon-powershot-g1-x-first-hands-on-video/">full post here</a>.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/09/canon-powershot-g1-x/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Canon unveils PowerShot G1 X: huge 14.3 megapixel sensor, 12,800 ISO, $800 price tag (updated)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/09/canon-powershot-g1-x/">Canon unveils PowerShot G1 X: huge 14.3 megapixel sensor, 12,800 ISO, $800 price tag (updated)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 09 Jan 2012 09:00:00 EST. Canon's new flagship compact, the Powershot G1X packs a 14.3 megapixel sensor alongside a 28-112mm lens capable of f/2.5. The compact will apparently be capable of RAW photo output, 1080p video capture. It will also manage more advanced features like we've seen on the PowerShot series' <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/15/canon-unveils-powershot-s100-and-sx40-hs-high-end-point-and-shoo/">S100</a>, like multi-area white balance, while you can also expect high-speed burst shooting at full resolution. What we don't know is what the G1X will look like. Will follow the wolf-in-sheep's-clothing looks of the S95 and S100 or go for something a little more... dynamic? Expect to see more on this in just a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/ces">few days</a>.<br /><br /><p></p><p></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/05/canon-powershot-g1x-leaks-14-3-mp-sensor-28-112mm-lens-and-sti/">Canon PowerShot G1 X leaks: 14.3 MP sensor, 28-112mm lens and still a compact</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 05 Jan 2012 11:53:00 EST. With cameras popping up on tablets, smartphones and even <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/07/looxcie-2-wearable-camcorder-slims-down-adds-some-accessories/">Bluetooth headsets</a>, there's a fairly good chance that there's already a device in your pocket capable of shooting high-res stills and HD video. But even with popular apps like Instagram on-board, mobile devices still can't match the versatility and image quality of a dedicated snapper. Canon's high-end PowerShot S-series is a mighty special breed, so we've been rather excited about the company's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/15/canon-unveils-powershot-s100-and-sx40-hs-high-end-point-and-shoo/">new S100</a>, which we were told to expect in November with a $430 sticker price. Now it looks like the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/03/canons-powershot-s95-gets-reviewed-found-to-be-worthy-s90-succ/">S95</a> successor may slip out of the warehouse a month earlier than promised, with Amazon estimating ship dates as early as October 3rd. In an industry where delays are much more prevalent than quiet early releases, this is certainly welcome news for the highly anticipated pocket cam, which packs a 12.1 megapixel CMOS sensor and f/2.0 (variable) zoom lens. Shipping estimates are always subject to change, so don't count on any miracles until that FedEx tracking number hits your inbox.<br />

It's not every day that we see a new camera hit the market -- it only feels like it is. And today it's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/canon/">Canon's</a> turn in the spotlight. Beefing up its point-and-shoot lineup with a trio of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/powershot/">PowerShots</a>, the company just announced its SX150 IS, ELPH 310 HS, and ELPH 510 HS -- that last one is billed as the thinnest camera to include a 12x optical zoom lens with 28mm wide-angle. All three models include a new IS system, Smart Auto with 32 shooting scenes, high-speed burst, and HD video capture. Photographers looking for manual control may want to focus on the $250 14.1 megapixel SX150, which includes aperture- and shutter-priority modes, a discrete-shooting mode, and a 3-inch LCD, but uses a CCD sensor. If you don't mind sacrificing manual control in favor of a slimmer body design, the $260 ELPH 310 HS and $350 ELPH 510 HS both include 12.1 megapixel CMOS sensors with improved performance in low light, and 8x and 12x optical zoom lenses, respectively. Both ELPH models will ship in early October, while the SX150 is slated to hit stores in the beginning of September. Canon is also announcing a new flash -- the $150 HF-DC2 -- scheduled to ship just in time to capture bright holiday pics this December.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-powershot-sx150-is-elph-510hs-and-elph-210-hs/">Canon PowerShot SX150 IS, ELPH 510 HS, and ELPH 210 HS</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-powershot-sx150-is-elph-510hs-and-elph-210-hs/#4385296"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-23-powershot-elph-310-hsblack1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-powershot-sx150-is-elph-510hs-and-elph-210-hs/#4385297"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-23-powershot-elph-310-hsblue1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-powershot-sx150-is-elph-510hs-and-elph-210-hs/#4385298"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-23-powershot-elph-310-hsgreen1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-powershot-sx150-is-elph-510hs-and-elph-210-hs/#4385299"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-23-powershot-elph-310-hspink1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-powershot-sx150-is-elph-510hs-and-elph-210-hs/#4385300"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-23-powershot-elph-310-hspurple1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/23/canon-announces-powershot-sx150-is-elph-310-510-hs-point-and/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Canon announces PowerShot SX150 IS, ELPH 310 / 510 HS point-and-shoot cams</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/23/canon-announces-powershot-sx150-is-elph-310-510-hs-point-and/">Canon announces PowerShot SX150 IS, ELPH 310 / 510 HS point-and-shoot cams</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 23 Aug 2011 04:10:00 EST. Eschewing the CCD of the past, Canon's new PowerShot lineup -- we know, it sounds like a familiar tune, but hear us out, these are new -- all boast a 12.1 megapixel CMOS sensors. The quartet enjoys the 12.1 megapixel HS (High Sensitivity) sensor, an improved variant of the ones introduced a year back with the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/19/canons-powershot-lineup-hands-on-the-best-of-the-rest/">S90</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/22/canon-powershot-g11-review-roundup/">G11</a>. In fact, the ELPH nomenclature has nixed "digital," "SD," and "IS" in favor of the more simplistic (but still elongated) "ELPH HS." So without further ado, the PowerShot ELPH 500 HS features a 3.2-inch touch panel screen, 4.4x optical zoom, ultra-wide angle 24mm lens with optical image stabilization, and color options including siiver, brown, and pink. The ultra-slim ELPH 300 HS has a 2.7-inch LCD, image stabilization, 4x zoom and a 24mm wide angle lens. On the lower end of the spectrum, the 100 HS comes in five colors, has a 4x optical zoom, a 3-inch LCD, and a 4x optical zoom -- otherwise, it shares many features of its bigger 300 HS brother. Meanwhile, the (non-ELPH) SX230 HS has a 14x zoom, GPS, and a 3-inch LCD. Price and release date? All are due in March (the 100 HS in the beginning of March, the rest by the end), with the 100 / 300 / 500 HS going for $199.99, $249.99, and $299.99, respectively, and the SX-230 for $349.99. Peruse the pics below -- enjoy!<br />

Cameras! Betcha didn't see that coming, did you? Canon's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/PowerShot/">PowerShot</a> lineup is out in full force. Actually there's just four to list, including the company's first point-and-shoot to drop below the $100 mark, but more on that one in a bit. From the top: The $179, 16 megapixel A3300 IS features 720p HD video, 5x optical zoom, a 3-inch LCD, a number of creative filters including "toy camera" and monochrome, and discrete mode that turns off all sounds for when you need to snap more quietly. Next up (or rather down, on this proverbial list) is the $139 A2200, which keeps the creative filters, 720p HD video, and discrete mode while moving down to 14 megapixels, 4x optical zoom, and a 2.7-inch LCD.<br />
<br />
The PowerShot A1200 (for $109) has similar specs to the A2200 but drops the sensor to 12.1 megapixels and nixes the discrete mode. There's also a <em>tiny</em> optical viewfinder -- not too useful, but hey, it's there if you want it. Finally we have the A800. 10 megapixels, VGA video with blur reduction, and a 2.5-inch LCD... doesn't look as spectacular when in the company of others, but it does rock an $89 price tag. All are due out late February. Check out the pics below.<br />

If it's a pocketable <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/powershot">PowerShot</a> and its name begins with 'G' you can be pretty sure it'll be a good performer, and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/canon">Canon</a>'s latest is no exception. The $499 <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/canon,g12">G12</a> is the sequential successor to the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/canon,g11">G11</a> and, as is typical for the range, it isn't a revolutionary leap forward. The G12 makes use of its predecessor's 10 megapixel sensor situated behind the same 5x zoom lens and offering the same suite of full manual controls. New this year is a 720p24 video recording mode with stereo mics, finally bringing this camera into the HD age -- but sadly doing so without use of that zoom. Also new is an HDR mode, stitching together three photos to make those vampires hiding in the shadows really pop. According to <em>Photography Blog</em> those improvements plus a few other niceties make this a particularly solid compact, even if its chunky dimensions as ever push the definition of that term.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/30/canon-powershot-g12-scores-predictably-glowing-review/">Canon PowerShot G12 scores predictably glowing review</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sat, 30 Oct 2010 03:49:00 EST. The more things change, the more they stay the same, and though Canon's PowerShot superzoom line has gone from <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/sx20">SX20</a> up to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/sx30">SX30</a>, the new model has received a review that's strikingly similar to that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/09/canons-powershot-sx20-is-superzoom-gets-superreviewed/">applied to last year's model</a>. On the SX20 they liked the focal range but hated the noisy image quality, and such is the case on the SX30 IS. This year it has a whopping 35x focal range, going from 24mm <em>all</em> the way up to 840mm and adding "very effective" IS to boot. The problem is double-trouble on the image quality front: noisy shots anywhere north of ISO 400, and chromatic aberrations that add a little too much Technicolor delight on contrasty shots. Ultimately it sounds like a hugely flexible and capable shooter, but only for those who aren't too picky about quality -- and who don't mind the $429 MSRP.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/17/canons-35x-sx30-superzoomer-reviewed-dazzling-specs-dont-trum/">Canon's 35x SX30 superzoomer reviewed: dazzling specs don't trump sub-par performance</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sun, 17 Oct 2010 07:07:00 EST. To say that Canon's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/22/canon-powershot-g11-review-roundup/">PowerShot G11</a> is growing long in the tooth would be understating things rather dramatically, and with Photokina just a few weeks away, now's as good a time as any to launch a prominent new camera into the world. In fact, Canon just got finished outing <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/19/canon-powershot-s95-the-sd4500-is-and-sx130-is-play-the-low-li/">a trio of point-and-shoot models</a>, but it seems that <i>Cnet Asia</i> didn't get the memo that a full foursome wouldn't be introduced. The publication's original writeup on the company's new cameras featured a number of G12 mentions throughout the text, and a full-on specifications chart was captured above. If all this is to be believed, we're looking at a 10 megapixel CCD sensor, 5x optical zoom, 2.8-inch tilt-and-swivel LCD, "HD-quality" video recording, optical image stabilization and an inbuilt HDR mode, topped off with a pinch of "sheesh, finally!" Obviously, there's no mention of a price or expected launch date, but something tells us that'll change dramatically before we touch down in K&ouml;ln.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/19/canons-powershot-g12-leaks-out-promises-hd-video-mode/">Canon's PowerShot G12 leaks out, promises HD video mode</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 19 Aug 2010 17:44:00 EST. As camera makers shift from touting megapixels to low-light and HD video recording performance, in steps a trio of point-and-shoot cameras from Canon -- the PowerShot S95 pictured above and the SD4500 IS and SX130 IS both pictured after the break. The S95 update ($399.99 in late August) to last year's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/s90">S90</a> combines Canon's DIGIC 4 image processing, a 10-megapixel high-sensitivity CCD sensor, and wide f/2.0 lens to enhance image quality and reduce noise at high ISO levels without resorting to a flash. It features a new high dynamic range (<a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/hdr">HDR</a>) mode, 720p video recording, and mini HDMI for throwing that video up to the living room flat screen. the S95 is also the first PowerShot to feature Hybrid IS image stabilization to help with macro shots. The SX130 IS ($249.99 in August), meanwhile, offers a 12.1 megapixel CMOS and 12x optical zoom lens that relies on optical image stabilization to keep things stable. A 3-inch LCD, 720p video mode, and Miniature, Fisheye, Poster, and Super Vivid creative modes. Rounding things out is the Power SD4500 IS with 10x optical zoom, optical image stabilization, and a 1080p video mode with Dynamic IS that helps further stabilize the video while the shooter is in motion -- a first for a digital ELPH. Canon's even slapped in a 240fps super slow motion mode (at an unspecified resolution) from Casio's bag of tricks. Expect it to hit retail in September for $349.99.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-powershot-s95-sd4500-is-and-sx130-is-press-shots/">Canon PowerShot S95, SD4500 IS, and SX130 IS press shots</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-powershot-s95-sd4500-is-and-sx130-is-press-shots/#3276467"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/08/canon1aug1901_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-powershot-s95-sd4500-is-and-sx130-is-press-shots/#3276468"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/08/canon1aug1902_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-powershot-s95-sd4500-is-and-sx130-is-press-shots/#3276469"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/08/canon1aug1903_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-powershot-s95-sd4500-is-and-sx130-is-press-shots/#3276470"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/08/canon1aug1904_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-powershot-s95-sd4500-is-and-sx130-is-press-shots/#3276471"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/08/canon1aug1905_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/19/canon-powershot-s95-the-sd4500-is-and-sx130-is-play-the-low-li/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Canon PowerShot S95, the SD4500 IS, and SX130 IS play the low-light, HD video cards</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/19/canon-powershot-s95-the-sd4500-is-and-sx130-is-play-the-low-li/">Canon PowerShot S95, the SD4500 IS, and SX130 IS play the low-light, HD video cards</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 19 Aug 2010 01:31:00 EST. </em>Time for us to open up <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/02/engadgets-back-to-school-guide-netbooks-and-laptops/">chapter two</a> of this year's Back to School advice compendium. Up for discussion today are digital cameras, which have been in the gym all year working on their processing prowess and return today with 720p HD video as an almost standard feature. We've got a good cross-section of young pretenders and finely aged veterans for your perusal, so why not give your mouse a little exercise as well and click past the break?<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/04/engadgets-back-to-school-guide-digital-cameras/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Engadget's back to school guide: Digital cameras</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/04/engadgets-back-to-school-guide-digital-cameras/">Engadget's back to school guide: Digital cameras</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 04 Aug 2010 13:30:00 EST. <div style="text-align: left;">The <em>DP Review</em> gang (motto: "blood in / blood out") has just done another one of its world famous superzoom group camera tests, and the results are guaranteed to frighten and enlighten you. Both the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/FZ35/">Panasonic FZ35</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/09/canons-powershot-sx20-is-superzoom-gets-superreviewed/">Canon SX20 IS</a> were singled out for boffo kudos (that's right -- boffo kudos). Apparently they're "the most refined models in this test," with lenses deemed "sharp across the zoom range," and kickass quality images and HD video. Of course, each of these bad boys has its own character, with the Canon feeling more like an entry-level DSLR to the reviewer, even with "by far the best viewfinder in this test." Panny's entry, on the other hand, gets points for portability and an intuitive user interface. Besides those two guys, there are a half dozen or so other cameras in the test. How did your favorite hold up? Sure, we all like reading reviews of high-end compact shooters, like the Olympus <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/e-pl1">E-PL1</a> and Ricoh's transforming <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/ricohgxr/">GXR</a>, but, when it comes to actually putting down the credit card most folks go with something a bit more... frugal. So, <em>Digital Camera Resource Page</em> has created the 2010 Budget Camera Shootout, which includes eight cameras in the $150 to $180 range with tiny cases and 4 or 5x zoom lenses. Contenders include the Olympus <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/fe-4030">FE-4030</a>, Samsung <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/sl600">SL600</a>, and Canon <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/SD1300">SD1300</a>. It's perhaps no surprise that the PowerShot, long king of the budget roost, comes out on top, but we won't spoil the rest of the rankings, which do include some unexpected performances, and should enable your buying with confidence for this summer's shooting season -- without blowing your budget.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/29/budget-compact-shootout-finds-the-best-little-digicams-for-your/">Budget compact shootout finds the best little digicams for your buck</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 29 Jun 2010 07:50:00 EST. Liked the lop-eared design and low-light sensitivity of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/11/canon-debuts-low-light-lovin-powershot-sd4000-is-digicam/">Canon's latest point and shoot</a>, but wanted to be sure you'd get $350 worth of camera for the asking price? You're in luck: the PowerShot SD4000 IS, aka IXUS 300 HS, has just received its first painstakingly detailed review. <em>Photography Blog</em> found the back-illuminated 10 megapixel CMOS sensor snapped excellent low-noise shots in a variety of tests, though the camera's highly-touted HS System features -- a 240fps movie mode and 8.4fps burst speed -- took pictures too low-res to impress. The publication also took issue with the lack of dedicated physical controls, as it apparently took six clicks to delete a single picture, but overall thought the SD4000 a good choice for casual and experienced photographers alike albeit at a somewhat inflated price. If portraits of Ben Franklin are burning a hole in your pocket, however, you'll find it on sale today at usual suspects B&amp;H, J&amp;R and Adorama Camera.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/27/canon-powershot-sd4000-is-reviewed-great-shots-but-no-cigar/">Canon PowerShot SD4000 IS reviewed: great shots but no cigar</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 27 May 2010 01:56:00 EST. Ah, Spring. The season of pollen, grass mowing and enlarged electricity bills. Oh, and impending vacations. In order to get you prepared for that last one, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Canon/">Canon</a> is introducing a new member of its Digital ELPH range today, the PowerShot SD4000 (or IXUS 300HS in other parts of the globe). Boasting a 10 megapixel back-illuminated CMOS sensor, DIGIC 4 image processing engine and a 3.8x optical zoom, this one also features an f/2.0 lens and the company's own HS System in order to produce more satisfactory results in low light situations. It also touts an 8.4fps burst capture rate, an HD movie mode, HDMI output support, a Super Slow Motion movie mode (240fps) and a 3-inch rear LCD. Those who love riding the cutting edge will also appreciate the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/SDXC/">SDXC</a> and Eye-Fi support, and if you're already sold on the $349.99 device, you simply need to choose between red, silver, black or a limited edition white. Commence pondering. <br />

'Tis a nice day to dream about how much you could capture with a shiny new point-and-shoot, isn't it? Our best buds over at <i>Engadget Chinese</i> were recently able to swing by an exhibition far, far away from US shores in order to catch some of the Spring's finest new pocket shooters in action. The standouts? Canon's succulent PowerShot SX210 IS (spotted in a variety of hues), Nikon's 12 megapixel <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/02/nikon-kicks-out-new-s-and-l-series-cams/">Coolpix S3000</a> and Pentax's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/25/pentax-confirms-optio-i-10-h90-and-e90-budget-friendly-shooter/">Optio I-10</a>. We'll confess -- that I-10 really has our number, and its retro styling and accompanying leather case could find its way into our pockets any day. Just sayin', is all. Hit that source link for the rest of the action.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/06/pentax-optio-i-10-nikon-s3000-and-canon-powershot-sx210-is-seen/">Pentax Optio I-10, Nikon S3000 and Canon PowerShot SX210 IS seen in the wild</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 06 Apr 2010 01:41:00 EST. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Canon/">Canon</a>'s just gone and busted out four new cameras in its point and shoot <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/PowerShot/">PowerShot</a> line. Up first the PowerShot Sx210 IS boasts a 14.1 megapixel sensor, a 28mm wide-angle lens with 14x optical zoom, a 3-inch LCD, and can shoot HD video. The SX210 IS will come in black, purple and gold. The PowerShot SD3500 IS also packs a 14.1 megapixel sensor, with a 24mm ultra wide angle lens with 5x optical zoom, and a 3.5-inch touchscreen LCD. The PowerShot SD3500 IS will come in black, silver and pink. The PowerShot SD1400 IS similarly has a 14.1 megapixel sensor, with 28mm lens and 4x optical zoom, but this little guy is less than an inch thick, and will be available in pink, orange, silver and black. Finally the PowerShot SD1300 IS has a 12.1 megapixel resolution, with a 28mm wide angle lens and 4x optical zoom, and a 2.7-inch LCD. It'll be available in silver, pink, green, blue and brown. The SX210 will be available in late March for $349.99, while the SD3500 IS, The SD1400 IS, and the SD1300 IS will arrive in late February (that's this month!) for $329.99, $249.99 and $199.99, respectively. Full press release is after the break. <br />

It might not be glamorous, but if a $110 camera is all you can afford -- or all you'd trust your kid with -- then it suddenly becomes of utmost importance. The new crop of A-series cameras fits such a bill, with the 12 megapixel, 4x zoom, optical image stabilized PowerShot A3100 IS in the "high end" at $180, followed by the 10 megapixel A3000 IS at $150; 10 megapixel, 3.3x zoom A495 at $130; and similarly specced A490 at $110. The differences between the A495 and A490 are muddled, outside of color choices and fewer scene selections. The Two A3000 cameras sports 2.7-inch screens and recharageable lithium-ion battery packs (a first for A-series cameras), with the A490 units going for 2.5-inches and trotting out the AAs. All four shooters should be out sometime in late February. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-debuts-a3100-is-a3000-is-a495-and-a490-low-end-shooters/">Canon debuts A3100 IS, A3000 IS, A495 and A490 low-end shooters</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-debuts-a3100-is-a3000-is-a495-and-a490-low-end-shooters/#2580298"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/01/20100105_lores_a3000is_3q_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-debuts-a3100-is-a3000-is-a495-and-a490-low-end-shooters/#2580299"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/01/20100105_lores_a3000is_back_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-debuts-a3100-is-a3000-is-a495-and-a490-low-end-shooters/#2580300"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/01/20100105_lores_a3000is_front_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-debuts-a3100-is-a3000-is-a495-and-a490-low-end-shooters/#2580302"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/01/20100105_lores_a3100is_b_3q_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-debuts-a3100-is-a3000-is-a495-and-a490-low-end-shooters/#2580301"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/01/20100105_lores_a3100is_r_3q_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/05/canon-debuts-a3100-is-a3000-is-a495-and-a490-low-end-shooters/">Canon debuts A3100 IS, A3000 IS, A495 and A490 low-end shooters</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 05 Jan 2010 10:06:00 EST. We had an all too brief <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/19/canon-powershot-g11-hands-on/">hands-on</a> with Canon's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/g11">PowerShot G11</a> way back in August, but the first real flood of reviews has only just recently started, and now seemed like as good a time as any to get you caught up on some of them. As you might expect, one of the real stand-out features is that swiveling LCD, which is not only good in and of itself, but "one of the best of its type" according to <em>What Digital Camera</em>. Other reviewers like Wired UK and CNET UK also found that G11 delivered some noticeably better results than the previous G10, with it aided especially by the surprising but welcome shift from the old 14.7-megapixel sensor to a new 10-megapixel one that offers an improved dynamic range and better performance at high ISO settings, among other advantages. On the downside, the camera is somewhat bulky, and <em>PhotographyBlog</em> says it fails to live up to Canon's claims of it being the "ultimate compact," especially when you consider some of the similarly-sized (but admittedly pricier) Micro Four Thirds offerings available.<br />

<a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Canon/">Canon</a> held off about as long as it could, but it finally caved to the pressures of adding a pressure-sensitive screen to one of its Digital ELPHs. The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/19/canon-outs-new-powershots-g11-s90-sx20-is-sx120-is-sd980-is/">SD980 IS</a> goes down as the first-ever touchscreen PowerShot, offering a better-than-average set of specifications, a few color options, an attractive size and a 720p movie mode that helps to set it apart from some of its VGA-quality contemporaries. We took the cam for a quick spin just to see how Canon's adaptation of the touchscreen felt in real-world use, and we've posted up our impressions -- along with a few sample galleries and a raw 720p video clip -- just beyond the break.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-powershot-sd980-is-unboxing/">Canon PowerShot SD980 IS unboxing</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-powershot-sd980-is-unboxing/#2322016"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/09/canon-sd980-is-handson-(1)_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-powershot-sd980-is-unboxing/#2321997"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/09/canon-sd980-is-handson-(10)_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-powershot-sd980-is-unboxing/#2321998"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/09/canon-sd980-is-handson-(11)_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-powershot-sd980-is-unboxing/#2321999"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/09/canon-sd980-is-handson-(12)_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-powershot-sd980-is-unboxing/#2322011"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/09/canon-sd980-is-handson-(13)_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/12/canon-powershot-sd980-is-unboxing-and-impressions/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Canon PowerShot SD980 IS unboxing and impressions</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/12/canon-powershot-sd980-is-unboxing-and-impressions/">Canon PowerShot SD980 IS unboxing and impressions</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 12 Oct 2009 14:37:00 EST. You might be forgiven for not spotting the SX20 IS in the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/19/canon-outs-new-powershots-g11-s90-sx20-is-sx120-is-sd980-is/">maelstrom of announcements</a> Canon hit us with last month, so here's a thorough breakdown of the cam for your delectation. Replacing the year-old <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/17/canon-powershot-sx10-is-gets-reviewed/">SX10</a>, the SX20 IS adds 720p video recording at 30 fps and takes the pixel count up to 12 million. Strangely, it was features from the older model that earned praise, with the reviewers liking the 2.5-inch vari-angle display and UltraSonic Motor, which provided a smooth and silent zooming action. Their major gripe was image noise at ISO 400 and above, though picture quality was considered above average and macro performance was singled out for commendation. Hit the read link for sample snaps and footage plus the enlightening conclusion.<br /><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/09/canons-powershot-sx20-is-superzoom-gets-superreviewed/">Canon's PowerShot SX20 IS superzoom gets superreviewed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 09 Sep 2009 22:29:00 EST. Sure, the G11 might <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/19/canon-powershot-g11-hands-on/">grab all the headlines</a>, but there's tons of meat to the rest of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/19/canon-outs-new-powershots-g11-s90-sx20-is-sx120-is-sd980-is/">Canon's new point and shoots</a>. The S90, for instance, packs the same sensor of the G11 into a deliciously compact (though scarily plastic) body, the new SD940 IS Digital ELPH cams show off slim, curved metal bodies befitting their lineage, and the SD980 IS doesn't sacrifice much in the name of fashion -- while using their ultra-sized touchscreens to the utmost. All the cameras we handled were labeled prototype, and so hopefully the d-pad jiggle we detected on most of these (particularly pronounced on the S90) will be rectified before these hit shelves, but otherwise we like what we see so far.<br />

We'll certainly be going back for seconds, but at first blush <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/19/canon-outs-new-powershots-g11-s90-sx20-is-sx120-is-sd980-is/">Canon's new PowerShot G11</a> is quite the attractive piece. The real standout, of course, is that flip-out LCD -- which feels bolted on by the gods -- but really the whole camera's build quality (and corresponding weight) is immediately obvious. We found the LCD plenty bright and colorful, though it certainly feels small for a modern camera. The price isn't small, but hopefully the RAW, 10 megapixel results will speak for themselves.<br />

Looks like that PowerShot G11 we <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/19/canon-powershot-g11-leaks-out-looks-promising/">spotted this morning</a> was indeed the real deal, and it's being followed by five other compatriots announced by <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Canon/">Canon</a> this fine morning. Starting with the big boy, you're looking at a 10 megapixel sensor, 2.8-inch vari-angle LCD, 5x optical zoom, RAW support, a hotshoe and an MSRP of $499.99 when it lands in October. Moving on, we've got the $429.99 PowerShot S90, an all-business point-and-shoot model with a 3-inch LCD, 10 megapixel sensor, DIGIC 4 processing engine, RAW support and a 3.8x optical zoomer. Moving right along, there's the SX20 IS megazoom ($399.99), which packs a 12.1 megapixel sensor, 720p (30fps) video mode, an HDMI output, 20x zoomer and a 2.5-inch vari-angle display. The SX120 IS is a simpler beast (albeit bulkier), sporting a 10 megapixel sensor, 3-inch LCD, 10x optical zoom and AA battery support for $249.99, while the $329.99 SD980 IS Digital ELPH snags a 12.1 megapixel sensor, 3-inch touchscreen, 720p movie mode, 5x optical zoom lens and four different colors (silver, blue, gold and purple). Finally, the $299.99 SD940 IS offers up most of the SD980's amenities save for the LCD and zoom, which is replaced by a non-touch 2.7-inch version and a 4x lens. Canon's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/27/canon-powershot-g10-reviewed/">PowerShot G10</a> has lived a long, fruitful life, but after being on the market for right around a year now, it's time for a proper successor to step in and take things over. The slick little bugger you see above purports to be that very device, with the predictably titled PowerShot G11 <em>supposedly</em> boasting a swiveling LCD, 10 megapixel sensor, 5x optical zoom lens, optical image stabilization, SD / SDHC card slot and full manual controls with RAW support and a hotshoe. We're told that it'll be available this fall for an undisclosed sum, and we get the feeling this will all become a lot more official in a matter of days / hours / minutes.<br /><br />[Thanks, Reznov]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/19/canon-powershot-g11-leaks-out-looks-promising/">Canon PowerShot G11 leaks out, looks promising</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 19 Aug 2009 08:20:00 EST. For the longest while, your <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/15/pentax-optio-w60-waterproof-camera-gets-reviewed/">options</a> were highly limited in the waterproof / rugged point-and-shoot arena. In fact, it was arguably better to just buy a standard P&amp;S camera and a waterproof casing for said camera than to worry over any of the standalone waterproof alternatives. When Canon introduced its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/26/canons-new-powershot-d10-is-rugged-bulbous-and-waterproof/">PowerShot D10</a> earlier this year, we immediately noticed that this waterproof shooter was quite unlike the models before it. Outside of a somewhat bulbous casing, it didn't look drastically different than some of the thicker, non-waterproof options out there. Not to mention the respectable 12.1 megapixel sensor, 3x <em>optical</em> zoom and ten meter waterproof rating. Needless to say, we couldn't resist the opportunity to grab this bugger and test it out for a week along the shores of Playa Tamarindo in Costa Rica and Lago Cocibolca in Nicaragua, so follow us past the break to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/21/ask-engadget-best-rugged-waterproof-point-and-shoot-camera/">find out</a> if this cam is the perfect accessory for your upcoming beach holiday.<br />

Streaky lines on your <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/g10,canon">G10</a> photos? Don't call MUFON, hit up your local Canon repair center. The company is acknowledging an issue that results in small, horizontal defects like that pictured above. Apparently such aberrations seem to appear at random, regardless of camera settings, but the affected units' serial numbers are at least easy to pick out at the read link. Not exactly good news for Canon, hot on the heels of the 50D <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/23/canon-50d-firmware-update-fixes-vertical-banding-issues/">vertical banding fix</a>, but at least it isn't attempting some sort of cover-up.<br /><br /><strong>Update:</strong> LimeyHoya commented to let us know Canon USA has <a href="http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=PgComSmModDisplayAct&amp;fcategoryid=222&amp;modelid=17624&amp;keycode=2112&amp;id=57370">posted up the same notice</a>, meaning you can now figure out if you're affected without having to ponder any abstract Google Translate koans.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&amp;tl=en&amp;u=http://dc.watch.impress.co.jp/cda/compact/2009/04/27/10758.html%3Fref%3Drss">Impress</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/27/canon-confirms-line-defect-on-g10-denies-existence-of-fourth-di/">Canon confirms line defect on G10, denies existence of fourth-dimensional UFOs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 27 Apr 2009 09:12:00 EST. <div align="left"><em>Photography Blog</em>'s just put up a rather exhaustive review of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/19/canons-latest-batch-of-cameras-get-the-hands-on-treatment/">Canon's PowerShot SX200 IS</a>. If you've already forgotten, this little guy boasts a 12 megapixel sensor, a 12x optical zoom, and a 3-inch LCD. Among the standout features of the cam, they like the PASM creative shooting modes, and its versatile 12x zoom lens. Drawbacks for the camera include its video mode, LCD (which is a lower resolution than some rivals), and a Smart Auto Mode that leaves a little to be desired. Overall, they seem to think that the camera stacks up quite well against most of its rivals, though they did find that it feel a bit short of its main competitor, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/26/panasonics-dmc-tz7-reviewed-offers-great-quality-stills-and-vi/">Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ7</a>. There's one more shot after the break, and hit the read link for the full on review.<br /></div>

As with FujiFilm's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/03/hands-on-with-latest-fujifilm-finepix-digital-cameras/">latest bunch</a>, we were quite shocked to see Canon's newest offering out and about in Hannover. Granted, most of the good one were caged under lock and key (yes, we're talking to you, elusive <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/18/canon-powershot-sx1-is-coming-to-us-in-april-nine-others-unveil/">PowerShot SX1</a>), but that didn't stop us from mashing our lens (and lips, we won't lie) up against the glass and pulling the shutter. You already know about the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/17/canon-powershot-sd780-is-sd960-is-make-brief-semi-official-deb/">specs</a>, now check out the skins and the European model names. <div align="left">Canon certainly isn't cutting any corners with its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/18/canon-powershot-sx1-is-coming-to-us-in-april-nine-others-unveil/">pre-PMA batch of digital cameras</a>, and the folks at PhotographyBlog look to be doing their best to keep up with them all, with them now churning out some hands-on looks with just about all of 'em, plus a couple of Canon's new lenses for good measure. Those include the SX200 IS pictured above, which they describe as "bigger and chunkier" than its rival <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/27/panasonics-dmc-ft1-tz7-tz6-fx550-and-fx40-cameras-outed-by/">Panasonic DMC-TZ7</a>, as well as the "sleek and sophisticated" A2100 IS, the "toy-camera-like" D10, and a number of other compact shooters that stay a bit closer to their predecessors in terms of appearance. Of particular note to more serious photographers, Canon was also showing off its new TS-E 24mm f/3.5L II lens, which is replacing the 17-year-old original model, and its new TS-E 17mm f/4L lens, which is apparently the world's shortest focal length Tilt-Shift lens with full-frame 35mm coverage. Hit up the link below to check out the whole lot, just be prepared to do a bit of digging.<br /></div>

Not to be outdone by <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/17/sonys-cyber-shot-t900-t90-w290-w230-and-h20-do-the-thinking/">Sony</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/17/samsung-expands-sl-camera-lineup-sl820-sl620-sl202-and-sl30/">Samsung</a>, or <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/17/fujifilm-delivers-five-new-finepix-cameras-z33wp-z30-s1500-j/">FujiFilm</a>, Canon has unveiled nearly a dozen digital cameras bound for the US ahead of March's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/PMA/">PMA</a>. Of the ten, the big guy is that 10 megapixel <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/09/17/canons-10-megapixel-sx1-is-shoots-full-hd-too/">SX1 IS</a> we originally heard about last September, which sports 1080p Full HD movie mode and a built-in HDMI connector. Not too far off is the SX200, SD970 and the already-leaked <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/17/canon-powershot-sd780-is-sd960-is-make-brief-semi-official-deb/">SD960 / SD780</a>, which all record 720p and also feature HDMI ports. The more rugged D10 boasts it's freeze proof down to 14 degrees Fahrenheit, shockproof up to four feet, and can withstand depths up to 33 feet deep. As for the rest, well, they've certainly got more appealing price tags. Full rundown of the specs after the break.<br /> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canons-unveils-powershot-sx1-with-1080p-movie-mode-nine-others/">Canon PowerShot SX1 IS coming to US in April, nine others unveiled</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canons-unveils-powershot-sx1-with-1080p-movie-mode-nine-others/#1367583"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/02/new-canons-2009-02-18_00-06-21-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canons-unveils-powershot-sx1-with-1080p-movie-mode-nine-others/#1367584"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/02/new-canons-2009-02-18_00-05-59-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canons-unveils-powershot-sx1-with-1080p-movie-mode-nine-others/#1367585"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/02/new-canons-2009-02-18_00-06-02-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canons-unveils-powershot-sx1-with-1080p-movie-mode-nine-others/#1367586"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/02/new-canons-2009-02-18_00-06-05-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canons-unveils-powershot-sx1-with-1080p-movie-mode-nine-others/#1367587"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/02/new-canons-2009-02-18_00-06-09-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/18/canon-powershot-sx1-is-coming-to-us-in-april-nine-others-unveil/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Canon PowerShot SX1 IS coming to US in April, nine others unveiled</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/18/canon-powershot-sx1-is-coming-to-us-in-april-nine-others-unveil/">Canon PowerShot SX1 IS coming to US in April, nine others unveiled</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 18 Feb 2009 00:56:00 EST. <div align="left">These aren't completely official just yet, but an impromptu appearance on Canon's own website certainly seems to indicate that the company's new PowerShot SD780 IS and SD960 IS should be getting the official treatment sooner rather than later. Both of these are 12-megapixel compacts and, most notably, each pack an HD movie mode (720p) and the requisite HDMI port to go along with it, along with Canon's trademark DIGIC IV image processor, and a 3x optical zoom on the SD780 (pictured above) and a 4x on the slightly larger SD960 (after the break). Unfortunately, there's no indication of a price, but both are apparently on track for a release sometime in April in a range of colors. Oh, and as if those weren't enough, we've also seen a stable of new models names leaked, though there aren't any images to back these up: A480, A1100 IS, A2100 IS, SD780 IS, SD960 IS, SD1200 IS, SX1 IS and SX200 IS. Is PMA just around the bend, or what?<br /><br />[Thanks, Craig]<br /><br /><a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/2009/02/powershot-sd960-is-sd780-is/">Read</a> - PowerShot leaks<br /><a href="http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1010&amp;message=31035812">Read</a> - Model name leaks<br /></div>
