If you're not jumping straight into the future with Apple's new iPhone 11 family, picking up a slightly older model is one way to upgrade without spending "flagship" money. Now that the new phones have been announced you can pick up the previous-gen for even less, now that price cuts have been announced for the iPhone 8 and iPhone XR. The two-year-old iPhone 8 now starts at $449 without any sales or discounts, while last year's mainstream model, the XR, is available for $599. You won't get the latest and greatest hardware -- can you live without Deep Fusion photography? -- but these phones are still slated to receive iOS updates that keep them secure and add new features, including iOS 13 when it's released later this week.

When Microsoft introduced the Surface Book 2 in 2017, it added a 15-inch screen option. While that gave the Macbook Pro some serious competition, it still started at $2,499. Now, Microsoft is offering a 15-inch Surface Book 2 configuration for $1,999 -- a full $500 less than the previous entry point. As you'd expect, the price cut does come with a few trade offs.

If the latest flagships from Samsung and HTC haven't impressed you, now might be a good time to reconsider a Motorola phone. Starting at midnight on May 18th, the company is holding a 48-hour sale in the UK with hefty discounts on the Moto X, Nexus 6 and Moto 360 smartwatch. The Moto X is being cut by £96, pushing the 16GB model down to £299 and the 32GB version to £339. • Xbox One's official UK price falls to £300

Plenty of UK retailers are already selling the Xbox One for under £300, but now Microsoft is making this markedly lower price-tag official. Effective immediately, the console will be available from £299.99, or £30 less than before. A spokesperson for Microsoft told Eurogamer that it's a "UK-only retail promotion," which suggests the reduction could only be temporary. However, given how Microsoft handled a similar price-drop in the US, we suspect this'll be a permanent discount before too long, if it's not one already. By making this the official price, Microsoft is also encouraging retailers to drop the cost of their bundles even further. The console has few exclusives prepped for the first half of 2015 (Halo 5: Guardians and Rise of the Tomb Raider will change that this autumn) but if you've been mulling a purchase anyway, now might be a good time to take the plunge.

  • Xbox One price drops to $350 in US starting Friday

The Xbox One will cost $350 at all US retailers starting Friday, January 16, as part of a promotion celebrating the new year. The price drop comes just two weeks after the Xbox One holiday discounts ended. The holiday promotion did well for Microsoft, placing US Xbox One sales ahead of PS4 sales in November and December, according to the NPD. "Building off a record-setting holiday, we are excited to announce a new promotion in which fans in the US can buy an Xbox One at a special price of $349, starting tomorrow, January 16, from their preferred retailer," Xbox Corporate VP of Marketing Mike Nichols said in a blog post. "We are thankful for all the excitement for Xbox One this holiday." Note that Nichols called the price cut a "promotion," not a permanent drop. In a video accompanying the blog post, Head of Xbox Phil Spencer promised that a screenshot function is coming to Xbox One "early this year." "I know it has been a question for quite a while," Spencer said. "We delivered themes; I think a natural add-on to themes are screenshots." [Image: Microsoft]

Following Sony's announcement that the PlayStation 4 will soon launch in China, Microsoft has dropped prices on Xbox One consoles in the region. According to the gaming arm of Chinese news outlet Sina (via Kotaku translation), both the Xbox One with Kinect and the a la carte version of the console have been discounted by 500 RMB (about $80), to 3,799 RMB ($613) and 3,199 RMB ($517), respectively. Despite these price drops, neither version of the Xbox One is as inexpensive as the PlayStation 4 will be when it reaches China on January 11 at a price of 2,899 RMB ($468). Both versions of the Chinese Xbox One include two free games, while Sony has made no mention of any games bundled with its console. [Image: Microsoft]
