In terms of new software, Microsoft doesn't have much to offer Xbox One owners this holiday unless you want to play the fourth Forza in as many years. What it does have though, are a baker's dozen of games from the original Xbox. Some we already knew about like Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge and Xbox launch title Fuzion Frenzy, but there are a few surprises as well.

Tim Schafer's Psychonauts is the definition of a modern cult classic. Despite winning multiple awards and the adoration of critics, Double Fine's first game sold poorly. Good games, however, don't go unplayed. Over the course of a decade, Psychonauts sold over a million copies in digital redistribution and left fans clamoring for a sequel to wrap up the game's loose ends. Now a satisfying conclusion to the original game's story is finally here, but it's not Psychonauts 2 -- it's Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin, a virtual-reality spinoff heading exclusively to PlayStation VR on February 21st.

It's been a long time since the first Psychonauts was released -- more than 10 years, in fact. However, developer Double Fine announced in late 2015 that it was bringing the series back with a pair of game: Psychonauts 2, a proper sequel, and Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin, a game for PlayStation VR meant to bridge the two titles. The latter title is just about ready to drop: Sony and Double Fine just announced that it'll be released on February 21st.

PlayStation Blog editors are either confused or playing a tricky little prank on Psychonauts fans this week. Double Fine's celebrated PlayStation 2 adventure game is available today on PlayStation 4, even though on Sunday Sony's blog announced Psychonauts was "coming out soon, but not this week." The PS4 version of Psychonauts is $10 on the PlayStation Store, available right now as a PS2 Classic.

Slowly but surely, Double Fine Productions is re-releasing its greatest hits on the PlayStation 4. In addition to Grim Fandango, Full Throttle and Day of the Tentacle, the developer has announced plans to bring Psychonauts to Sony's latest system. Unlike Double Fine's point-and-click adventure games though, it won't be getting the full remaster treatment -- instead, it'll just be a straight port of the PC, Xbox and PS2 classic. The original wasn't a massive success, but its mixture of solid platforming and timeless Tim Schafer humour won it plenty of praise from the press in 2005.

You made Psychonauts 2 happen. The $3.3 million Fig campaign's been fully funded and now perhaps the hardest work for developer Double Fine Productions is ahead of it: finishing the game. In the video below, studio founder Tim Schafer says that the campaign will run through next Tuesday, though. "Every [additional] dollar we make goes into making the game better, giving us more time to polish and making the game great," he says. "We don't just want to make Psychonauts 2, we want to make an amazing Psychonauts 2."

Cult classic Psychonauts getting a crowd-funded sequel was perhaps the biggest news out of this past week's second-annual Game Awards. But what about the game that came before it? The one that's celebrating its 10th birthday this year? That's where "The Color of the Sky in Your World" comes in. It features a who's who of Double Fine employees past and present as they talk about the process of making the game, including creative director Tim Schafer and producer Greg Rice.

Double Fine isn't counting solely on a crowdfunded Psychonauts sequel to capture your imagination -- it just unveiled a ton of new projects at Sony's PlayStation Experience event. The highlight (at least for gamers of a certain age) is a remastered version of Full Throttle, Tim Schafer's action/adventure classic. It's not certain just when the motorcycle-heavy game will arrive, but it'll be available on both the PS4 and PlayStation Vita.

Psychonauts 2 is happening. It's a sequel to Double Fine's first-ever game, a quirky, beloved, 2005 platformer about a team of psychic spies-in-training. Most of the pieces are in order -- the concept art is in, the characters are rendered, the narrative is prepped and Double Fine founder Tim Schafer is ready to roll. The studio needs just one more thing before diving into development: $3.3 million from investors and fans.

The latest swath of huge discounts to hit Steam focuses on developer Double Fine and slashes prices on the studio's games dating back to the classic adventure Psychonauts. Though the entirety of Double Fine's offerings are available at hefty discounts, the highlights of the sale include crowdfunded adventure Broken Age at $8.49, the developer's recent foray into tactical strategy games known as Massive Chalice at $20.09 and the aforementioned Psychonauts at $2. If buying games piecemeal seems like too much effort, you could instead save time by purchasing the Double Fine Bundle, which includes Psychonauts, Costume Quest, Stacking, Iron Brigade and Brutal Legend. The Bundle has received an 80 percent discount to a price of $7. If any of this has piqued your interest, hurry over to Steam. Despite falling under Steam's "Daily Deal" heading, the Double Fine Publisher Sale will be available for 48 hours. [Image: Double Fine]

Summer Games Done Quick has just granted everyone a free pass to watch a week's worth of speedruns in the name of charity, but if livestreamed gaming isn't your thing, you can still support the cause. Donations made by Games Done Quick viewers will benefit Doctors Without Borders, but this time, the livestreaming effort has brought along a teammate: the fine folks at Humble Bundle. Until the charitable event's June 28 conclusion, The Summer Games Done Quick Bundle offers 10 games for $25, with 100 percent of its proceeds going to Doctors Without Borders. The bundle includes Gunpoint, Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs and Guacamelee! Gold Edition, among others. In the case of Guacamelee, only 25,000 copies are available for the sale, so anyone interested in brawling through an adventure as a luchador (and sometimes a rooster) should make a swift purchase. For PC users, each game can be claimed via Steam key or as a DRM-free download. Mac and Linux users should look closely at each game's dropdown menu before buying in however, since not all of them are available without DRM on all platforms, or even available on Mac and Linux in the first place. As a unique twist to the promotion, payments of $35 or more include early backer access to Broken Age, the crowd-funded game that was previously known as Double Fine Adventure. • Schafer would 'love' more Brutal Legend content on PC

If Brütal Legend takes off on Steam after its launch on February 26, Double Fine founder Tim Schafer would love to add more modes, tweaks and multiplayer content to the game, he told RPS."It's actually been fun to continue work on it," Schafer said. "I mean, we have a wishlist from when we made this version. But since we are a small developer publishing it ourselves, we have to go with the best version we can make and then hope it's successful so we can add more."Schafer mentioned a few specifics he would like to see in Brütal Legend, such as alternate game modes in multiplayer, new playable factions, updates to the current unit feedback system and an advanced mode featuring traditional RTS-style controls. He didn't see any singleplayer updates or sequels in Brütal Legend's future, since those tended to be more expensive and expansive.A sequel to Psychonauts, for example, would probably be cheaper than one for Brütal Legend, considering the cost of music licensing, Schafer said."I mean, it's been longer since Psychonauts and we wouldn't have to do any music licensing," he said. "So we could probably afford to do it more if we got some funding. I feel like a Brütal sequel would cost twice as much as Psychonauts. It's easier to imagine Double Fine doing a sequel to Psychonauts. But for creative reasons, there's no preference of one over the other."

  • Notch no longer involved in Psychonauts 2 funding

Markus "Notch" Persson, who has made a fortune as the developer of indie game Minecraft, is no longer interested in financing Psychonauts 2. Persson's involvement in the project began last year when he offered to fund the project. Although he noted reservations at the time, it appears those issues have grown over the past year to the point where he won't be funding the project."I somewhat naively thought 'a couple of million' was two million. I had no doubt in my mind that a Psychonauts 2 would earn that money back easily. Turns out [Double Fine] wanted 18 million dollars, haha," Persson wrote on Reddit last week. "I don't have the time at the moment to even try to get educated enough to make an 18 million dollar deal. Perhaps in some distant future when I'm no longer trying to make games, I could get into angel investing. I've made one private investment into a game so far, at $100K, and it's frankly a lot more work than I thought."Psychonauts developer Double Fine tells VentureBeat that it's currently focused on its funded Kickstarter project. The company states it hasn't budgeted out a sequel and will "likely explore alternative funding methods that will require multiple sources to make it a reality."
