  • Magic 2013, Rainbow Six: Vegas join Games With Gold next month

One is a virtual recreation of a card game that has been made obsolete by its recently-released sequel, and the other is a tactical shooter spin-off released in 2006. These dramatically different games, Magic 2013 - Duels of the Planeswalkers and Rainbow Six: Vegas, will be available for free to Xbox Live Gold subscribers this September as part of Microsoft's ongoing Games With Gold promotion. As Major Nelson points out, Magic 2013 is slated to appear on September 1. While the downloadable game normally features a $10 price tag, anyone with a valid Xbox Live Gold account will be able to grab Magic 2013 for free until September 15. Then on September 16, Rainbow Six: Vegas will join the Games With Gold lineup. Unlike Magic 2013, Rainbow Six: Vegas debuted as a retail game, but it too will be available gratis to any Xbox Live Gold subscribers until the end of September.

Grandma sure did like playing Rainbow Six: Vegas on that old PSP when you'd make your weekly homage for family dinner, didn't she? "Blap! Blap! Blap!" she'd shout. And things really haven't been the same since you traded up to a Vita, what with its lack of support for many PSP titles. We understand.Thankfully, so does Sony. This morning, the US PlayStation blog announced today's launch of several PSP games on the Vita (including Grandma's fave), as well as a variety of PSP Minis (full list after the break). As usual, if you already own the games digitally for your PSP, all you'll have to do is re-download the files to your PSN-tied Vita. If not, well, you'll have to pony up some virtual cash.Interestingly, Sony also mentioned "improved playability" for some titles beyond the up-res'd graphics – we're checking to see what exactly that means. The line has since been removed from Sony's blog post.

Ubisoft will put out a free Fan Pack for the tactical FPS game Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas 2 according to their website, and you can download this via PSN starting in July. It will introduce a new gameplay option named High Stakes, which makes the game much more difficult -- radars, aim assistance and health regeneration are all out the window. Ammunition will be scarce and accuracy during moving will be lower. Furthermore, there will be three remixed levels: Calypso Casino of the original Rainbow Six Vegas, dark Murdertown and dark CQB Training. Lastly, there will be tweaks, balancing, features, new spawning and chat options, new ranks and new A.C.E.S. levels. Full list of features are on Ubisoft's site. We are glad they haven't given up on the game, but will we be able to forgive their earlier special PS3 "exclusives"?[Via GameSpot]

  • Bad Company parodies Gears and Rainbow Six

Following in the sneaky footsteps of their Metal Gear Solid 4 parody, DICE just released two more Battlefield: Bad Company parodies, this time targeting Gears of War and Rainbow Six. And again, they caused us to chuckle uncontrollably. The first promo vid takes on Gears of War's unforgettable "Mad World" trailer, where the B Company crew comes up with their own, more happy rendition that incorporates a musical injection of shortening bread. High-larious! The Rainbow Six parody, embedded after the break, is also enjoyable as it mocks the over exaggerated, charades-style communication style RS soldiers are known for. You must admit, that even if you aren't interested in the game, it's refreshing to see EA and DICE take this kind of entertaining marketing approach. They get the X3F seal of approval.[Via Joystiq]

  • Sunday brings Assassin's deals and boxers too [update]

Update: Success! We we able to slash our way through Best Buy Canada's security to discover that you can get DMC4 and Turok bundled together for $89. High price assassin FTW!Today is Sunday, which means we get to look through the all the Sunday deals to spot some of the best gaming deals. We like to think of ourselves as high price assassins whose goal is to rid the world of corporate foolery and deny high priced gaming goods from making it to store shelves. That's just how we roll.Speaking of being an assassin, we discovered that Best Buy has Assassin's Creed and Kane & Lynch: Dead Men for $39 and also priced the original Rainbow Six Vegas at $29. Also, being stealth like a kitten, we noticed that Toys R Us has placed a $49 price tag on Guitar Hero III (game only) and we spotted Circuit City giving away free "DENIED" boxers (the kind you wear) with the purchase of Conflict: Denied Ops. We tried to sneak into Canada's Best Buy stores for some high price murdering, but security prevented our entry and thus, no savings justice could be made.

It looks like what happens in Vegas really will stay in Vegas, as Ubisoft designer Philippe Therien recently told Eurogamer that Rainbow Six Vegas 2 will mark the last entry in the series to be set in the city. "We really feel that the story of Vegas is done. We've explored as much of Vegas as we wanted. For now, we're pretty much covered with Vegas," said Therien. Therien added that having Rainbow Six focus on a single city worked well, but that the team is unsure if future installments will be based on a similar concept. So, if you want more Vegas, your last shot hits shelves on March 21. Next stop, Rainbow Six Stringtown.[Via Joystiq]

Don't expect a Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Vegas 3 anytime soon. Speaking to Eurogamer, designer Philippe Therien said, "We will never go back to Vegas - at least, not in the foreseeable future." So much for the "rescue four hooker witnesses from a back alley full of out-of-town drunkards" mission we've been dying to play.Therien also noted that, although the single location worked well for the story of the previous two games, he's not sure if they'll return to that format for the next Rainbow Six installment. (Make no mistake, no one expects this to be the last Rainbow Six title.) The glamorous, time-paradoxical Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 is due out March 21.

This one's really bringing us back to eighth grade. Except, you know, replace dinosaurs with terrorists, and replace a real-live-working volcano with a PS3. Other than that it's exactly the same. Chris: "PlayStation Park, Las Vegas' latest theme hotel, has left much of the Strip uninhabitable thanks to the 800 degree Fahrenheit stream of air continually emitted from the side of the building." Josh: "Finally, something more gaudy and depressing than the actual Las Vegas." Nilay: "Note: Beds do not vibrate." or "We never noticed how much the Wynn looked like a Foreman grill." Paul: "I'll be in the garage if you need me, honey. Working on the, uh... car." Richard: "Ok, who left the Allspark next to the PS3?" Ittousai: "Vegas-based terrorist group with micropulse bomb is demanding backwards compatibility; more at 11." Steve: "Kutaragi: 'This hotel is probably too cheap'"Ross: "Voted loosest memory card slots on the Strip!" or "I'm putting all my Cell chips on Blu!" or "Yeah, it may have nine processing cores but are they synchronized to dancing fountains?"[Via technabob]

  • New Rainbow Six Vegas 2 teaser now glam-free, time paradoxical

    by

    12.20.2007

Perhaps to replace its last embarrassing trailer, Ubisoft has unveiled a new teaser for Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas 2. This teaser offers even less of the game than Duke Nukem Forever's recent sighting, opting instead to show a few seconds of operatives hopping out of a helicopter. There is one pesky problem, and that is with time itself: if you notice the first shot of the helicopter it displays 6:52:12 and the chopper isn't close to the building. When the camera cuts back to the helicopter next to the building, time is again 6:52:12. There are two (and only two) logical conclusions: either we are to assume two helicopters, with shots from two separate buildings, or Vegas 2 has a time travel component. Hopefully Ubisoft will come clean on its temporal experiments sometime in the near-distant past-future.[Via Megatonik]

If you're wondering what Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas 2 will look like in-game, close your eyes and wish really hard for a new trailer. However, if you want to see what operatives do when not scaling walls or killing people (hint: it involves bountiful, big-breasted, brunette bimbos bumped briskly by brazen bodies), boy do we have a teaser for you.The original video was posted and later pulled by GameTrailers, only to be re-uploaded to the site via a user -- if the video is pulled again, you can also find a copy at DailyMotion (via Megatonik). Other facts: it's still in Las Vegas and that's the logo above. Did you want to know anything else? Don't be so greedy!

  • Rainbow Six Vegas Red and Black edition now free

Yes, you read the headline correctly, because both Rainbow Six Vegas Players Packs are going to be free for download. Major Nelson just informed us that the Black Edition was pulled from the Marketplace earlier this week, because Ubisoft didn't want the content to cost 800 Microsoft points ... they wanted it to be free! The Black Edition is now available on the Marketplace and is free for download, so go get it! But wait, did you pay for the content before the Black Edition was pulled? Not to worry, because Microsoft will be reimbursing those who paid for the Black Edition within' the next ten weeks. Sweet, isn't it?But that's not all the good news. As a thank you to the Rainbow Six community, Ubisoft decided to make the Red Edition Player Pack a free download starting next Friday, July 6th. That's a 800 Microsoft point value! But sorry for those who already purchased the Red Edition, because no reimbursements will be made for the content. Ubisoft rocks ... they rock hard!

In one of the more joyful miscommunications of our gaming times, turns out that the Rainbow Six Vegas Black Pack, which spontaneously went missing after being on the marketplace for 800 MS points, was supposed to be free. Yup, you read that right. It "was originally intended to be free content for the fans of Rainbow Six Vegas" according to Major Nelson. All players who purchased will be reimbursed automatically in 8 to 10 weeks. That's a bit long, but we keep hearing that word free and all anger just melts away. The Black Pack will be back on June 30, with the Red Pack being offered for free as "appreciation" on July 6. Now that's what we're talkin' about! For those who purchased the pack, please make sure your account info is up to date so Microsoft can reimburse you properly.Well, that's a pleasant surprise ... and we were just joking when we said we'd "like to think that Ubisoft was so racked with guilt over charging $10 for five maps (when that amount previously got you five maps and two new modes) that they pulled it." Turns out, they were. So much so that they offered the same content that is already available in the PS3 version of the game for free. That word just doesn't get old. Don't forget to download your free Wii browser while you still can. Free, free, freediddy, free.[Thanks Felixlighter and Stan]
