Are you a true contrarian looking for a camera that befits your nonconformist lifestyle? Well, Canon's latest entry-level DSLR may not be the most unruly camera out, but at least it sports a moniker that fits the bill. The Canon T3 Rebel, also known as the EOS 1100D, is a 12.2-megapixel affair designed with the DSLR newbie in mind, and according to a review over at PhotographyBlog, it doesn't sacrifice image quality for ease of use. Touted as a successor to the Rebel XS, the T3 actually carries over some useful features from its more sophisticated sibling, the T3i, including a user-friendly control layout, but lacks the camera's Scene Intelligent auto mode and extensive list of creative filters. Aside from that, the reviewer found T3's grips too slick and its diminutive LCD screen a minor setback, but was quick to point out that none of these is a deal-breaker. In fact, aside from a bit of noise encountered at the highest ISO setting, the camera delivers high quality photographs even in low light. All things considered, it looks like the Rebel T3 is a "responsive and intuitive DSLR" for the novice photog, and at $600, it's got at least some of the competition beat. Now, we won't tell you what to do, but if we were you, we'd click the source link to see how the T3 stacks up.
Canon Rebel T3 DSLR reviewed: a safe bet for first-time shooters originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 26 Mar 2011 18:02:00 EST. Granted, you could probably glean as much from the raw specifications list, but at least we've got a handful of reviews now to confirm it. The folks at Camera Gear Guide have a fairly exhaustive critique up, and while they lauded the overall image quality and the addition of the new video features (a digital in-shoot zoom and a swiveling LCD), they couldn't wholeheartedly recommend it as an upgrade for existing T1i and T2i owners. Even for newcomers to the mid-range DSLR game, Canon's own 60D seems infinitely more compelling at just $100 more, and it's also hard to ignore Sony's SLT-A55 for $50 less than what the T3i is retailing for. That's not to say the T3i wasn't impressive; quite the opposite, in fact. But it seems as if you'll need to seriously survey the competition before deciding that this one's worth your hard-earned Benjamins. Hit the source link for the full skinny, and hop on past the break for a preview video.
Continue reading Canon's Rebel T3i / 600D reviewed: not exactly a compelling upgrade

Canon's Rebel T3i / 600D reviewed: not exactly a compelling upgrade originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 07 Mar 2011 18:32:00 EST. How's about a new DSLR? Canon has just rolled out a new entry-level Rebel and a new flagship Rebel this evening, with the T3 (1100D) and T3i (600D) offering mild updates over their predecessors. The EOS Rebel T3 will ship at the end of March with a EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 II zoom lens for $599.99, offering up a 12.2 megapixel CMOS sensor, DIGIC 4 Imaging processor, nine-point autofocus system and a 63-zone dual-layer metering system. You'll need to provide your own SD, SDHC or SDXC card, but unlike entry-level bodies of the past, this guy will capture full-motion video at 1280 x 720. There's an ISO range of 100 to 6,400, a pop-up flash and a newfangled Basic+ non-technical interface that should help beginners grow accustomed to more technical aspects of photography without the steep learning curve.

Stepping up, there's the new T3i, which boasts an 18 megapixel CMOS sensor, an ISO range of 100 to 6,400, support for SD / SDHC / SDXC cards, DIGIC 4 Imaging processor, pop-up flash, integrated Speedlite settings (to go along with a few new Speedlite flashes also introduced today) and a tilt / swivel LCD monitor. It'll ship at the start of March for $799.99 (body only), or $899.99 bundled with a EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II zoom lens. Hit the source links below for the devilish details, not to mention information on two new telephoto lenses (the EF 500mm F/4L IS II USM and EF 600mm F/4L IS II USM).
Continue reading Canon trots out Canon Rebel T3 and Rebel T3i DSLR cameras

Canon trots out Canon Rebel T3 and Rebel T3i DSLR cameras originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 07 Feb 2011 00:52:00 EST. Apple's iPod nano and the Sony Ericsson LiveView may have disappointed as wrist computers, but our Dick Tracy dream soldiers on, to the point where we found ourselves taking another look at that most dubious of converged devices: the watch phone. There, we discovered the Rebel, the latest creation from UK manufacturer Swap, a quad-band GSM wrist unit with a 1.46-inch color touchscreen and a built-in camera for both video and stills. It may look like a sterile medical wristband, but that silicone strap actually hides a USB port on one end, the better to let you transfer your MP3s and MP4 video to its paltry 2GB of expandable microSD storage. The watch also does FM radio, beams audio to your Bluetooth headset and comes with the typical smattering of basic apps. Still, there's not a lot for the asking price of £189 (about $300) so you'd best be head over heels in love with the design. PR after the break, more images at our source link.
Continue reading Swap Rebel watch phone laughs at your wrist-mounted iPod nano

Swap Rebel watch phone laughs at your wrist-mounted iPod nano originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 13 Dec 2010 02:06:00 EST. Canon just recently sold its 20 millionth digital EOS camera, so there's a better-than-average chance that the company's EOS Rebel T2i made up a bulk of those final sales leading up to the milestone. If you've been shooting (and shooting... and shooting) with your new T2i over the past few months, we're interested in hearing how exactly you'd like to tweak things. Is the 1080p movie mode living up to the hype? Would you change the body design in any way? Happy with the kit lens? Wishing you would've sprung for a full-frame cam instead? Would you have preferred the option to get a Harlequin edition? Oh, Canon -- you and your milestones. Just under two years ago, you took time out of your busy schedule to gloat about the shipment of your 100 millionth compact camera, and today you're bragging about the production of your 40 millionth EOS-series SLR camera. In all seriousness, we're pretty proud of ya. After all, it took a full decade (1987 to 1997) for you to conjure up 10 million EOS film cameras, and six more after that to hit the magical 20 million mark. Once you blew through 30 million in 2007, it took but 28 months to get where you are today. What's really wild, though, is that half of the milestone is all digital, and given the state of film today, we're guessing that the delta between the two will only grow larger in the future. You've come a long way since the introduction of the EOS-1, but we know you've got a few surprises in store yet -- how's about a sub-$1,000 DSLR that shoots native 4K video and has an ISO ceiling of 1,000,000 to celebrate the rapidly approaching 50 million mark?
"Eye of Dragon" must be Chinese for "better kit lens, fancier neck strap, a branded photo album, and a leather case." Because that's the totality of substantive changes you'll be getting if you opt for the upgraded Jackie Chan variety of Canon's Rebel T2i. Of course, there's also the knowledge that you'll be one of only 2,010 owners of this exclusive kit, which will set buyers back an unenviable 10,000 Yuan ($1,467). If you ask us, we'd rather just buy the body and add on the EF-S 18-135mm lens ourselves, but then we were always more partial to Bruce Lee anyway.
Canon brings out Jackie Chan-branded Rebel T2i / 550D for Chinese market originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 27 Apr 2010 05:37:00 EST. We've seen plenty of the headline 1080p / 30fps video mode on the Rebel T2i, but what's been missing till now are the equally comprehensive reviews of this new 18 megapixel shooter's other talents. Starting off with image quality -- still the bread and butter of any DSLR -- Camera Labs informs us that "the EOS 550D / T2i delivered images which were essentially the same as those from the EOS 7D," describing them as highly detailed and exhibiting no greater noise than can be found on Nikon's 12 megapixel competitors. An impressive feat, you will agree. Further appreciation is meted out for the newly improved LCD screen on the back, whose 3:2 ratio matches the sensor's dimensions, but there's also warning that the 7D retains a significant advantage in terms of ergonomics, weatherproofing, continuous burst mode, and autofocus. Even so, both reviews were happy to pin their "highly recommended" badges on the T2i, and you can discover the more nuanced reasons for doing so at the source links below.
Canon Rebel T2i / 550D receives plaudit-heavy reviews originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 31 Mar 2010 10:13:00 EST. We should all be pretty familiar with the specs of Canon's latest mainstream DSLR, so let's skip past the new 18 megapixel CMOS sensor, SDXC memory card compatibility and high-res 3-inch LCD screen, and just focus on the one area where the Rebel T2i has a shot at matching the EOS 7D: 1080p video. Ron Risman of Cameratown has perched the two black-clad champs atop a tripod, installed identical (for the purposes of the test) lenses on them, and gone to town with testing the ISO performance of the two bodies. As he sees it, there's no perceptible difference between the two up to ISO 1600, though looking at his video test we're also hard pressed to distinguish any notable discrepancies at the maximum 6400 setting. Needless to say, the conclusion is that if you're just after the 7D's video performance with a smaller price tag, the Rebel T2i / 550D is the shooter for you. To make that decision as informed as possible, there's also a feature comparison list, so skip along to the source link to get informed.
Canon Rebel T2i / 550D squares off with EOS 7D in video performance test originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 02 Mar 2010 14:44:00 EST. We seriously need to open up an Austrian branch of Engadget. After treating us to a titanium iPhone, the Governator's homeland is now playing host to the first professionally shot 1080p video with the new T2i / 550D from Canon. Nino Leitner has shot a moody short film with a pre-production unit and his conclusion has been that the video you can obtain from the latest prosumer shooter is indistinguishable from the output of the mighty Canon 7D. High praise indeed, but not altogether unexpected considering the T2i sports an all-new 18 megapixel sensor (that is "very similar" to the 7D's) and has had its 1080p recording upgraded to the requisite 30fps to make it a viable shooting mode. Skip past the break to have a look at his results or visit the source for Nino's in-depth preview. Nikon, you've been put on notice.
Continue reading Canon Rebel T2i / 550D demonstrates 1080p video mode, collects glowing early preview

Canon Rebel T2i / 550D demonstrates 1080p video mode, collects glowing early preview originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 25 Feb 2010 06:13:00 EST. We'd heard inklings, but Canon's brand new Rebel T2i (also known as the EOS 550D outside the US) is newly official and oh-so-desirable. The camera takes quite a few features from Canon's EOS 7D, including an almost identical sensor, the selectable frame rates, and the stereo mic jack. There's also a new widescreen LCD and button layout to differentiate it from its T1i sibling -- which will stick around on the market to pick up the poorer Canon lovers among us. The shooter can capture 18.7 megapixel stills at 3.7 fps, with better, 7D-style light metering and an expanded ISO range of 100 to 6400. Video is even more thrilling, with the addition of 30 / 25 / 24 fps 1080p (the T1i was limited to a silly 20 fps at that resolution), along with 720p at 50 / 60 fps and VGA at similar rates. The camera can also do an ultra-zoomed "movie crop" function that actually does the cropping on the CMOS sensor to provide about 7x of additional zoom without losing quality in SD. The T2i will hit retail in March for $800, with a EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens kit at $900. PR is after the break.

Gallery: Canon Rebel T2i press shots

Continue reading Canon's new Rebel T2i shoots 18 megapixel stills, ups the video options

Canon's new Rebel T2i shoots 18 megapixel stills, ups the video options originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 08 Feb 2010 09:22:00 EST. According to its source, we can expect a new, higher resolution LCD, selectable FPS video, new LP-E8 battery and grip in the followup to the Rebel T1i. It also brings a new Rebel shape and build quality but lacks an articulating screen. And in case you're wondering, the uptick in camera news is related to the runup to the big PMA 2010 photog show kicking off on February 19th -- so get used to it.
Canon Rebel T2i rumored for next week originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 02 Feb 2010 05:33:00 EST. Picture this: you're a skydive instructor with a makeshift helmet apparatus for taking stills and video of your feats. Suddenly, about 3,000 feet from above the ground, your photography mount decides to take its own flight pattern and sets off without you. That apparently happened to a friend of FredMiranda forum member Calin Leucuta, who calculates the velocity at impact was approximately 100 miles per hour. After a 15- to 20-minute search after landing, the video camera was found to be without saving... but the Canon Rebel XT for still was still functional despite a crack in the body and some jerkiness with the zoom lens. We're still hesitant to take it at face value -- it's a pretty wild and impressive tale, after all -- but video is reportedly on the way and we'd definitely like to see that footage remove all lingering doubt from our minds. More pics of the aftermath past the read link.
Canon EOS Rebel XT spits in gravity's face, survives 3,000-foot drop? originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 16 Dec 2009 02:26:00 EST. It's not exactly the native unlock we've been waiting for, but those of you in Europe dying for a Pre unshackled from O2 will be happy to know that the Rebel Simcard II is now compatible with Palm's first webOS device. The £10.99 / $17.95 accessory card slots in between your carrier's SIM and the Pre's SIM slot, bypassing the Pre's network locks and allowing full access to voice and data services including 3G. Sadly, the Pre doesn't have the radio support to make this work in the States on anything but EDGE, but at least it's a start, right? Video after the break.
Last week all the Nikon <strike>fanboys</strike> supporters were out in full-force critiquing the D5000, so we couldn't let another week slip by without giving Canon advocates (and haters, we don't discriminate) a similar chance with the T1i. Hitting the market at just about the same time, this well-specced entry-level DSLR packed a few niceties than alternative units simply did not: 1080p video, a 15.1 megapixel sensor and a price tag below $1,000. That said, there are still some areas that we reckon Canon could've improved upon, and if you feel the same way, we'd love to hear about it. Are you kosher with the 20fps 1080p mode? Is the image quality up to snuff? How's that stock lens treating you? Cut loose, won'tcha?

How would you change Canon's T1i DSLR? originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 13 Jun 2009 00:41:00 EST. Make no mistake about it, the low / mid-range DSLR battle of early 2009 is on. Just over a month ago, Canon shook up the entry-level DSLR game with a shooter that packed a 1080p video mode, a 15.1 megapixel sensor and a price tag well below the magical $1,000 mark. Right around a fortnight later, Nikon not-at-all-coincidentally issued a new shooter in its own range, one that was no doubt built to rival the previously mentioned EOS Rebel T1i. Just this week, both of these bad boys showed up on our doorstep, and we've spent every waking minute since mashing buttons and capturing memories in order to give you our take on the pair. Sure, the Nikon D5000 might have gotten itself a ship date today, but Canon's Rebel T1i is doing one better and actually turning up in stores a couple weeks ahead of its scheduled mid-May debut. This particular specimen was spotted at Bromfield Camera in Boston, but we'd love to hear if you've seen this guy pop up elsewhere -- let us know!

[Thanks, Conrado]

Canon Rebel T1i trickling out to stores originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 24 Apr 2009 16:56:00 EST. Sure, we've already seen a couple video clips, but Canon's new EOS Rebel T1i / 500D certainly deserves a proper unboxing, don't you think? Nothing you probably don't already know if you're into this cam, but we will say the menu screen looks a little nicer than on previous models. It's kind of strange that the most anticipated sample media from the latest crop of DSLRs is actually HD video, but that's the way the market's going, and the new Canon EOS Rebel T1i and Nikon D5000 are no exception. Demystifying Digital has footage from both, and while Nikon's newest seems to deliver essentially the same CMOS jelly-motion results from its 12.3 megapixel sensor as the D90, the T1i is a pleasant surprise -- we're not seeing much wiggle at 720p, which might be a result of the higher-res 15 megapixel sensor. We'll wait to see full-res samples and some actual still images before we crown a winner, but we'll tell you right now that neither one of these is going to make us leave a dedicated camcorder behind when it's important -- the lack of autofocus and the windblown internal mics just don't cut it. What's the world coming too, really? Not only did we see the first official presidential portrait shot with a DSLR this year, but we're also seeing the first feature film to be entirely shot on one as well. Searching For Sonny has grabbed the rights to that latter claim, a little ditty written and directed by one Andrew Disney. As expected, we have Canon's almighty EOS 5D Mark II to thank, though Nikon fanboys will surely love that their lenses were used. It's early on, we know, but the EOS Digital Rebel T1i is already shaping up to be a winner. Merely hours after its official unveiling, the shutterbugs over at Imaging-Resource have put together a remarkably thorough hands-on preview that takes you through practically every feature offered on the new DSLR. One area of importance was the movie mode; we quickly noticed that Canon deliberately failed to mention the word "autofocus" when referencing "movie mode," and sure enough, the cam won't autofocus continuously. As with the D90, this little fact puts a huge damper on what would otherwise be an (even more) amazing feature, but we suppose we'll chalk it up to baby steps and just hope for better at PMA 2010. At any rate, everything else seemed to exceed expectations, with their beta unit delivering image quality "at least as good as the 50D." Yep, Canon just went live with that Rebel T1i DSLR that leaked a bit earlier, and it's looking like a hell of a response to the Nikon D90: an XSi body jacked with a sensor matching the 50Ds 15.1 megapixels, 1080p HD video recording, and a $900 price tag. Yeah, it's gonna be a hit. Other notable specs include a 3.0-inch Live View screen, a Digic IV processor, ISO 12.8k sensitivity, and the same 18-55 IS EF-S kit lens as the XSi -- in other words, all those rumors were true. Hit up the read links for more info!
Looks like CNET might've jumped the gun a bit, releasing a video podcast that outed Canon's oft rumored EOS Rebel T1i before the company had a chance to announce it themselves. The evidence has since been pulled and we're looking for a copy to verify, but according to the DP Review forum posters who claim to have seen it, the 15 megapixel DSLR has the same sensor size as the 50D and can shoot video at 720p / 30 FPS and 1080p / 20 FPS. Its frame is comparable to the Rebel XSi. Earlier this month, a Danish publication Zoom said it was invited to a Canon press conference scheduled for tomorrow, and we think we've got a good clue as to what it might unveil...

[Via Photography Bay; thanks, Eric]

Read - Rebel T1i leak
Read - Canon press conference on March 25
Filed under: Digital Cameras

Canon's EOS Rebel T1i DSLR leaked? originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 24 Mar 2009 21:48:00 EST. If the Nikon D90's questionable 720p movie mode did nothing for you, or if you're a self-proclaimed Canon fanboy through and through, there's at least a sliver of a chance you bit on the EOS 50D. Now that you've had a solid month to flex that shutter finger and pore over the results, how are you liking things? Experiencing a huge dose of buyer's remorse? Absolutely elated with the low-light performance? Did you find enough extras to warrant the upgrade from a D40? We're just looking to hear how you really like / dislike Canon's latest mid-range DSLR, and more importantly, how you'd do things differently if given the keys to the company's R&D lab. Get to spoutin', won't you?

How would you change Canon's EOS 50D? originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 14 Nov 2008 19:30:00 EST. Still, even the fanboys in attendance can't deny that firmware updates that solve any number of quirks are loved just the same. Canon has just posted up firmware v1.0.9 for the aforesaid DSLR, which purportedly fixes three primary issues. The 7.81MB download addresses a "phenomenon in which AEB (Auto Exposure Bracketing) shooting does not operate normally under specific conditions," another in which "the Live View exposure simulation warning indication does not properly display during Live View shooting, and yet another in which "images cannot be played back after continuous shooting when a printer is connected to the camera or a video output terminal is used." With all the DSLR noise going on, the EOS Rebel XS managed to sneak in without too many people noticing. The proper entry-level replacement to the XTi / 400D recently took the time to cave to Camera Labs' every request, and when all was said and done, critics didn't find too many negative points to harp on. The all-important image quality ranked very highly, and the built-in live view was obviously a boon. Granted, the fixed screen and 7-point AF system (versus the 9-pointer on the XTi) were slight bummers, but it still managed to secure an 82% (Highly Recommended) rating. Care to see how it stacked up against Nikon's D60, Sony's A200 and a Polaroid 80B Highlander? Two of the three comparisons await you in the read link.

[Via DigitalCameraInfo]

Canon's EOS Rebel XS / 1000D DSLR hits the test bench originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 20 Aug 2008 08:37:00 EST. This is either the best or worst idea ever -- we're still not sure. The Intempo Rebel (aptly named) records songs from FM radio stations, strips out DJ chatter and ads, and saves them to an SD or MMC card as MP3 files. What's more, it even goes after the most-played songs to make sure you're getting all the good (overplayed?) tracks right off the air. It also sports a USB port, line-in jack, and headphone plug. Intempo calls it a "music sampling system" that cuts out "hyperactive DJs" -- we call it a headache for the RIAA. According to the camera fanatics at Photography Bay, the new model will sport a 10.1 megapixel CMOS chip, Digic III, 7-point auto-focus, 3 FPS, a 2.5-inch LCD display, will weigh 540 grams, and should feature simplified 450D-like menus. The camera's price-point is rumored to be on the low end of things, which furthers our suspicions that this will be a replacement for the aging Rebel XT. You'll know more when we know more, so stay tuned.

[Thanks, Eric]

Canon's Rebel XS / 1000D specs uncovered originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 21 May 2008 11:20:00 EST. Of course, there aren't any specs or pictures, but based on Canon's naming scheme, we'd hazard that it'll be a lower-end version of the Rebel XSi, replacing the now somewhat-outdated Rebel XT. Of course, that's purely conjecture, but based on Canon's track record with these leaks, we'll know for sure soon enough.

[Via 1000 Noisy Cameras]

Canon prepping a Digital Rebel XS / 1000D? originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 13 May 2008 19:35:00 EST.
We've already seen it unboxed, but if you've been waiting for a slightly more thorough look at Canon's new Rebel XSi DSLR (otherwise known as the EOS 450D) before you drop $800+ on it, you can now get your fix thanks to a steady stream of reviews that are now pouring in. Among the earliest to get its hands on a unit was Digital Photography Review, which reserved final judgment because it only did a preview but nonetheless provided one of the most exhaustive looks at the camera, complete with comparisons to its predecessor and its nearest competitors. Offering more opinions was Camera Labs, which found the XSi to be a "worthy successor" to the XTi, although it warns that new buyers should consider whether the upgrades are really worth the extra cost. The folks at LetsGoDigital were a bit more enthusiastic, calling the XSi a "perfect camera for everybody," although they were slightly disappointed by the camera's plastic casing. That also proved to be sticking point for Digital Camera Review, which went as far as to call the camera "cheap looking" and "less refined" than those with a lightly textured finish. On the upside, it says that the camera's low-noise sensor "raises the bar for entry-level DSLRs," with its extensive customization options, and Canon's expectedly strong AF system also winning it some high marks. Well, what do you know? The actual Rebel XSi comes packaged in a box that looks exactly like the one that cropped up earlier this month. Still, there's just something special about seeing Canon's latest DSLR cautiously unboxed, with the fortunate unboxer taking special care not to insert an obscene amount of blur into each snap. Sure, the model shown above was unboxed within a retail location, but that's not to say you can't hand over some cold hard cash to do the same at your abode. Check out the whole process in the read link below -- just brace yourself for some serious (albeit SFW) gadget affection in that first shot.

[Thanks, Ryan]

Canon's Rebel XSi gets emphatically unboxed originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 23 Apr 2008 14:45:00 EST. After seeing that spy shot and the Amazon link with an April release date, it seemed like Canon's Rebel XSi was bound to drop any moment, but now that may not be the case. According to the latest info plastered up at the online-retailer, you won't be able to get your hands on the new DSLR until June 15th, which is basically a lifetime if you've been waiting on this. It could just be a minor mixup, but frankly we're not holding our breath.

Update: According to a number of commenters, this camera is available pretty widely right now. Apparently, Amazon is the only place on Earth where the release is being delayed. You know that Rebel XSi we saw pop up on Amazon? Well thanks to a tipster, we now know it's appearing in more than one location. That photo above shows one of these babies fresh out of a shipping crate at Best Buy -- so if you've been saving your pennies, they could find their way into the hands of a blue-shirted sales associate any day now.

Canon's Rebel XSi turns up in retail spy shot originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 11 Apr 2008 10:42:00 EST. We knew Canon's hot new Rebel XSi was due this month, but it looks like Amazon is once again to the rescue with a specific street date: April 27, which is a bit after the previously-rumored date of the 15th. That's what, just 5,000 pennies a day to get one by launch? Totally doable.

PS. -Don't forget, if you can't wait that long, we've got a hands-on gallery right here.

[Thanks, Dan]

Canon Rebel XSi shows up on Amazon with a ship date: April 27 originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 09 Apr 2008 20:21:00 EST. We got our hands on what's probably one of the most anticipated cameras of the show, the Canon EOS Rebel XSi DSLR. The predecessor XTi model was crazy successful, so smart money says that the step up to a 3-inch live view LCD, 12.2-megapixel CMOS sensor, 9-point AF and Canon's DIGIC III processing will help continue the trend. That's a lot of features packed into this "starter" DSLR from Canon. With this body and all the lenses Canon has, this is one entry level that most folks will never need to leave.

Gallery: Hands-on with the Canon Rebel XSi DSLR

Hands-on with the Canon EOS Rebel XSi DSLR originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 31 Jan 2008 02:10:00 EST. It's been 20 years since Canon shipped the first film-based EOS 650 AF SLR, and although the camera industry has undergone some fundamental changes since, the EOS line remains as strong as ever. Canon announced today that it's now shipped over 30 million EOS cameras, and over 10 million digital EOS units since launching those in 2000 with the EOS D30. With popular models like the XTi / 400D flying off shelves, it looks like we've got another 20 years to look forward to -- congrats, Canon!

Canon ships 30 millionth EOS SLR, 10 millionth EOS DSLR originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 20 Dec 2007 19:01:00 EST. No specs or pictures of the unannounced camera but it's fair to say that we're looking at a followup to their 8.3 megapixel 30D. No surprise what with Canon's market share slumping due to stiff competition from the Sony A100, Nikon D80 and some cannibalization by their own EOS 400D / Rebel XTi. No specs yet, but don't be surprised to find at least a 10.2 megapixel sensor, anti-dust technology, DIGIC III processing and sensor changes for better performance at high ISO. Clicking through you'll find a big red "X" in place of the EOS 40D text. Now the tough choice: click the "read" link below and refresh until the onset of RSI, or kick back and chill -- the wolf's on it and we'll be with you di-rectly... or at least once the specs do finally break.

[Via Digital Photography Blog]

Canon EOS 40D on the way? originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 22 Jan 2007 06:40:00 EST. The actual show is still nearly a month away, but a few trigger-happy camera manufacturers are unveiling their wares a bit early. Canon's EOS 400D / Rebel XTi DSLR -- a followup to their uber-successful Rebel XT -- was already pretty well outed by their Chinese arm, so there aren't really a lot of surprises here, but it's looking good all the same. The highlights are just like before: a 10.1 megapixel CMOS sensor, 2.5-inch LCD (a sizable improvement to the 1.8-incher on the XT), and speedy 9-point autofocus -- the same as that of the EOS 30D. The 22.2 x 14.8mm CMOS sticks with the 1.6x conversion ratio common to EOS cams -- not sure how we were getting that full frame vibe before -- and ISO sensitivity ranges from 100-1600. Canon is introducing a new Self Cleaning Sensor Unit that shakes off dust through ultrasonic vibration, along with a Dust Delete Data feature that embeds dust location in metadata, helping the included Digital Photo Professional software delete dust spots automatically. Of course, it wouldn't be a "Rebel" if Canon wasn't doing their darndest to undercut the competition on price, and the new $899 pricetag, which includes Canon's EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 zoom lense, does a pretty good job of said undercutting. You can also nab just the camera body for $799, and Canon has dropped the similar configurations of the XT to $799 and $699 respectively. The XTi is due for release in September, and seems destined for at least a little bit of success in its own right.

[Via LetsGoDigital]

Canon gets official with their 400D / Rebel XTi DSLR for Photokina originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 24 Aug 2006 09:48:00 EST.
