After releasing its first episode last May, Renegade Kid's Moon Chronicles is finally ready to receive episodes two, three and four. Creator Jools Watsham revealed on Twitter that Nintendo has approved the episodes and "it's looking like" all three will hit the 3DS eShop on February 5. A "season pass" will be available for $9 to purchase every episode or, according to Nintendo's Moon Chronicles page, individual episodes can be had for $4.50 apiece. The first episode, which also includes special VR missions, remains $8.99. For those who missed its debut last year, Moon Chronicles is a remake of Renegade Kid's DS first-person shooter, Moon, with improved visuals and 3D support. Also, as Watsham points out, the DLC arrives a week before the launch of the New 3DS, which should give players a reason to use that fancy C-stick. [Image: Renegade Kid]

Jools Watsham, co-founder of Mutant Mudds developer Renegade Kid, has revealed that the studio's next game, Xeodrifter, will reach the Nintendo 3DS eShop on December 11. It will be priced at $10. For those who missed October's trailer, Xeodrifter is a classically-styled platforming game with light roleplaying game progression elements that emphasizes exploration of a labyrinthine world while relying on aesthetics that are modern but clearly modeled after the pixel-heavy games of the early 1990s. In other words, it falls squarely into the "Metroidvania" subgenre, though it adds a new wrinkle to the well-worn formula by including the plane-hopping mechanic first seen in Mutant Mudds. "I am a huge fan of Super Metroid, Metroid: Zero Mission, and Castlevania: Circle of the Moon, and have always wanted to develop a game in that sub-genre," Watsham wrote earlier this year. "The day finally came where the desire to develop it got too strong and I just had to act on it. Xeodrifter was born." [Image: Renegade Kid]

Developer Renegade Kid mixes a dash of Metroid with its Mutant Mudds formula in its latest project Xeodrifter, shown in action for the first time in the trailer above. Xeodrifter marries Metroid-style alien environments and exploration with Mutant Mudds' signature background-hopping mechanics, challenging players to explore multiple side-scrolling planes as they plumb nearby planets for crucial supplies and ability upgrades. The trailer above shows off a dash mechanic similar to Super Metroid's, and suggests that environments will hide plenty of hidden goodies for players to discover. Xeodrifter is slated to launch exclusively in the 3DS eShop. A release date is not yet known. [Video: Renegade Kid]

  • Dementium series developer obtains sequel rights

Developer Renegade Kid has reacquired control of its Dementium series, a horror-focused intellectual property that birthed two frightening games on the Nintendo DS. Renegade Kid co-founder Jools Watsham took to Twitter to announce the deal: I am ecstatic to announce that Renegade Kid now has the rights to create Dementium sequels! EXCITE!! - Jools Watsham (@JoolsWatsham) September 16, 2014 The first game in the series, Dementium: The Ward, was distributed by publisher GameCock, which has since shuttered. Its sequel and the IP was then handled by SouthPeak Interactive, which had published the first game in Europe. Developer Renegade Kid has since gone on to create the Mutant Mudd series and the episodic 3DS game Moon Chronicles. "We have always retained ownership of the Dementium IP," Watsham told me. "SouthPeak used to have first right of refusal on sequels, but that is no longer the case."

Renegade Kid co-founder Jools Watsham has announced that development on Treasurenauts is now on hiatus so that the studio can instead focus on Xeodrifter, an exploratory platformer set in deep space. "I am a huge fan of Super Metroid, Metroid: Zero Mission, and Castlevania: Circle of the Moon, and have always wanted to develop a game in that sub-genre," Watsham writes in a Go Nintendo-exclusive developer's diary. "The day finally came where the desire to develop it got too strong and I just had to act on it. Xeodrifter was born." According to Watsham, players take the role of an "interstellar drifter" attempting to explore desolate planets for the resources necessary to fix their ship. Of course, there are aliens that will need blasting and numerous power-ups and secrets areas to discover all within a labyrinthine, color-coded map, so despite Watsham's antipathy toward the "Metroidvania" descriptor, he admits it really is the most succinct way to describe Xeodrifter. Though Watsham offers no release date or even vague window for when Xeodrifter might debut, he plans to keep fans updated on the studio's progress via a series of weekly developer diaries at Go Nintendo. • Mutant Mudds updated on 3DS with Deluxe version's content

Considering Mutant Mudds reached the 3DS eShop in early 2012, it's possible you gathered every last one of its golden diamonds months ago. That no longer means you've seen all it has to offer though, thanks to this week's free update, which adds 20 ghost levels, optional checkpoints and hidden characters that are also found in the Deluxe edition of the game. If handhelds aren't your style, there's always the Wii U, PC or crossbuy-compatible PS3 versions to consider. Even if the extra content hasn't curbed your craving for challenging platformers, Mutant Mudds will eventually get a sequel, though developer Renegade Kid stopped working on it last December to focus on finishing Treasurenaughts. At the time, studio co-founder Jools Watsham explained the team felt it would be "healthier/better for us to develop a new 2D platform game in between Mutant Mudds and Mutant Mudds 2 to maintain perspective on what Mutant Mudds 2 needs to be." The first chapter of Moon Chronicles, Renegade Kid's episodic, visually-upgraded remake of its 2009 first-person shooter for the DS, will make contact with the 3DS eShop on May 15. The game's official Twitter account transmitted the release date's signal this week, reminding us that the first portion of the 3D-enabled Moon Chronicles will cost $8.99. If the initial chapter's price is a bit steep to you, know that three additional DLC chapters will be offered for $1.99 apiece. Each episode carries four chapters of the original game, with the base $8.99 offering also including six VR missions. If the incoming content is received well enough, Renegade Kid has plans to offer a second season's worth sometime next year, with all-new content taking place after the original game's story. • Renegade Kid's Cult County misses funding goal, considering alternatives

Renegade Kid's Kickstarter project for Cult County concluded today, failing to meet its lofty $580,000 goal. The Mutant Mudds and Dementium developer's Co-Founder Jools Watsham thanked the project's 1,492 backers via Twitter and a backers-only update on the page, who managed to raise $46,736 in one month, and acknowledged that Renegade Kid is "discussing other options" for the game moving forward. Set in a small west-Texas town, Cult County follows the story of Gavin Mellick across five episodes, a man that learns about a cult as he seeks his sister to deliver news about their ailing mother. The developer first revealed Cult County at PAX East in March 2013. Initially planned for 3DS, Renegade Kid expanded the game's scope to include versions for PC, Mac, Linux, Wii U, Xbox One, PS4, PS3 and Vita. Watsham said others suggested the developer should "reduce the [number] of platforms and budget for Cult County," but asserted that the "only way to reduce budget is to only make episode [one]." • Renegade Kid's Cult County mixes horror, FPS, story in a dust bowl

Cult County is a first-person survival horror game that takes cues from Telltale's The Walking Dead and horror classics such as Silent Hill and Resident Evil, according to developer Renegade Kid. That's the studio behind Mutant Mudds, Moon and the DS horror games, Dementium: The Ward and Dementium 2. Cult County takes place in a small west-Texas town: Gavin Mellick's mother is on her deathbed and he's unable to reach his sister by phone, so he drives six hours to tell her the news in person, just beating a dust storm to his late aunt's house. As the dust gathers, Gavin learns about a new cult in town and the suicide of Father Pearce, and he begins to see shadowy figures on the edge of his vision. The game features melee and firearm combat, and the town deteriorates the longer Gavin sticks around. "We have wanted to return to the survival horror genre for many years," Renegade Kid writes on its Kickstarter page. "And, our fans have told us the same thing! Many players have contacted us asking for Dementium 3. Without going into any icky details, certain contractual ties from the past make that impossible, unfortunately. So, instead of letting that hold us back, we decided to take matters into our own hands and develop a new survival horror experience with the same spirit." Renegade Kid's Kickstarter campaign seeks $580,000 to complete the game for PC, Mac, Linux, Wii U, Xbox One, PS4, PS3 and Vita. Cult County is already approved for Steam distribution, and it expects a development period of roughly one year. The studio revealed Cult County at PAX East in 2013, but then it was slated for 3DS only. [Image: Renegade Kid]

  • Mutant Mudds Deluxe does better on Wii U than PSN and Steam, developer says

Since making Mutant Mudds Deluxe, an improved version of platformer Mutant Mudds, available on Wii U, Steam and PSN last year, developer Renegade Kid has seen the best sales on Nintendo's console - even better than PSN and Steam combined. Renegade Kid co-founder Jools Watsham revealed the news on Twitter earlier this week. Watsham added in a follow-up tweet that 3DS has undoubtedly been the most popular platform for Mutant Mudds Deluxe, which was unlocked as a free content download on 3DS in the original Mutant Mudds game. The varying length of availability on each platform is worth noting when comparing sales. Mutant Mudds Deluxe arrived first on 3DS in early 2012, followed by ports to PC and iOS later in the year. A Steam version was made available last November, then the PS3 and PS Vita versions launched in December. Watsham didn't say where iOS fits into all of this. Renegade Kid is currently working on a few different games for 3DS, including atmospheric first-person shooter Moon Chronicles, loot-focused platformer Treasurenauts and horror FPS Cult County. Renegade Kid has also promised a sequel to Mutant Mudds, but development is currently on hold until work on Treasurenauts has been completed.

Mutant Mudds developer Renegade Kid announced that it is developing Moon Chronicles, a 3DS remake of its 2009 Nintendo DS first-person shooter Moon. Moon Chronicles will be visually upgraded to take advantage of the 3DS's wider top screen, and will run at 60 frames per second in both 2D and 3D modes. Chronicles will also include Circle Pad Pro support, allowing for traditional twin-stick control options. The game will be released episodically via Nintendo's eShop this spring, with the first four-hour episode priced at $8.99. Three additional DLC chapters, each offering about 2 additional hours of gameplay, will be available at launch for $1.99 apiece. If Moon Chronicles proves successful, Renegade hopes to release an all-new second season of content next year that takes place after Moon's storyline. Moon Chronicles joins Renegade Kid's growing stable of projects, which include the side-scrolling platformer Treasurenauts and the survival horror game Cult County. A Mutant Mudds sequel is also in the works, though development is currently on hold pending the completion of Treasurenauts.

Renegade Kid has finally won back all rights to Moon, the studio's atmospheric first-person shooter and exploration game for the DS. Renegade Kid co-founder Jools Watsham confirmed the news on Twitter today. Renegade Kid will pursue a sequel to Moon. Watsham said the developer had always planned to make a sequel, but Mastiff wouldn't go along with it. One trip to the moon was enough for that publisher, apparently. The proposed Moon sequel is one of many projects currently underway at Renegade Kid. The developer is working on Treasurenauts, which is due some time this year, on top of two unannounced 3DS games also due in 2014.

Renegade Kid's plane-hopping platformer Mutant Mudds Deluxe will debut for the PlayStation 3 and PS Vita on December 17 as a Cross-Buy release, studio co-founder Jools Watsham announced. The PSN version of Mutant Mudds Deluxe will be priced at $9.99, and includes Cross-Save functionality across both platforms. Players in Europe will need to wait a little longer before joining the fight against the Mudds, however, as Watsham notes that "the cost and logistical hassle" of age-rating submissions has delayed the game's European launch on PSN and the Wii U eShop. Watsham additionally revealed that work on the upcoming sequel Mutant Mudds 2 has been put on hold while the team finishes up work on its current project, Treasurenauts. "We feel that it is healthier/better for us to develop a new 2D platform game in between Mutant Mudds and Mutant Mudds 2 to maintain perspective on what Mutant Mudds 2 needs to be," he explained. Treasurenauts has been delayed to next year, and a release date for Mutant Mudds 2 has not been announced. Series fans have a new batch of content to look forward to, however, as Watsham revealed that the original Nintendo 3DS version of Mutant Mudds will receive a free update "sometime in 2014."

Renegade Kid co-founder Jools Watsham announced that the studio's Nintendo 3DS platformer Treasurenauts will miss its previously announced December release date, and is now set to launch in the eShop in the first quarter of next year. "Don't worry, there's nothing wrong," Watsham assures. "The game means a lot to us, and we want to do it right. We need more time to make it the game we want it to be. [...] Sorry for the delay, but as an independent developer we rely on the success and revenue generated from each of our self-published games. More time = better game = better sales (hopefully)." Watsham notes that two new Renegade Kid-developed projects will be announced next year, including an unnamed 3DS game set for release in mid-2014. These two games will be developed alongside the studio's current projects, which include the survival horror game Cult County and a sequel to its plane-shifting platformer Mutant Mudds.

Mutant Mudds Deluxe will hit Steam for PC on November 21 (that's this week!), pushed up from its previous launch date of December 5. Developer Jools Watsham says it's coming out early "because it is ready! Happy holidays!" That's a good enough reason for us. Mutant Mudds launched on the 3DS eShop in early 2012, and since then it's come to Windows and iOS, and it added the Deluxe moniker to arrive on Wii U. Mutant Mudds Deluxe is set to hit PS3 and Vita as a Cross-Buy game this holiday season.

Once it launches, Deluxe will be available to Windows users on Steam.

Renegade Kid is "aiming for Christmas" to launch Mutant Mudds Deluxe on PS3 and Vita, co-founder Jools Watsham recently tweeted. The platformer will be Cross-Buy and Cross-Save compatible, so those that own both systems will only need to purchase one copy of the game to both access it and transfer their save files to the other console. Mutant Mudds first launched on the 3DS eShop in January 2012, and has players blasting muddy monsters as a boy named Max, a kid armed with a water gun and a jetpack. Watsham also noted that he is currently designing a "secret project" codenamed CGC alongside his work on the Mutant Mudds ports and Renegade Kid's Treasurenauts, another platformer that's slated to arrive on the 3DS eShop in December.

Renegade Kid will reclaim the intellectual property rights to its atmospheric first-person game, Moon, in 2014. The developer of Mutant Mudds and Dementium wants to pursue a sequel once it regains ownership of the game, first published by Mastiff in 2009. "Save your energy. Renegade Kid gains Moon rights back in 2014," wrote studio co-founder Jools Watsham on Twitter. In a follow-up tweet he said, "It has always been our plan to create a sequel to Moon. Never could convince the pub to go for it. Come 2014 we're in control." The studio is currently working on Treasurenauts and a sequel to Mutant Mudds, which it expects to launch next year.
