Just recently, luxury automaker Porsche teased its electric Mission E sports car, showing its shadowy silhouette that's not unlike its other non-EV cars. Now, the company has shown that it's getting even more serious about electric vehicles and its Mission E development by teaming up with EV supercar-maker Rimac. Porsche has taken a minority shareholding of ten percent in Rimac Automobili, which you might know as the creator of Concept Two hypercar EV. In addition to manufacturing incredibly fast electric vehicles, Rimac also develops and produces EV components.

Pininfarina will go from designer to automaker with all-EV lineup

For decades, Pininfarina has largely been a design house -- it shaped and built cars, but usually under someone else's name (such as the Ferrari F40). It's apparently ready to become a full-fledged manufacturer, however, and a thoroughly 21st century one at that. Autocar sources have heard that Pininfarina is launching an all-electric car lineup headlined by a hypercar, nicknamed PF-Zero, that would aim squarely at the Bugatti Chiron with a 2020 launch. It would have power comparable to the 1,479HP of the Chiron, and would be based on a modular platform jointly developed by its parent company Mahindra (a Formula E competitor) and Rimac. There would also be more accessible models... relatively speaking.

This year's Geneva Motor Show seemed to be all about going fast without stopping at the gas pump. Gas-powered vehicles continue to dominate the market, but automakers took the opportunity to showcase their electrified roadmap as they transition from oil to electrons.

Rimac unveils the 1,900 HP Concept Two electric hypercar

After a shadowy tease, Rimac has unveiled the Concept Two, a hypercar EV with an off-the-wall crazy 1,914 horsepower. That's about 500 more than pundits were expecting, and all those ponies will accelerate it to 60 mph in 1.85 seconds and to a top speed of 258 mph, Rimac says. Yes, those figures seem carefully calculated to outdo Tesla's upcoming next-generation Roadster, which is supposed to hit 60 mph in 1.9 seconds and top out at 250 mph. As a dose of perspective, 1,914 horsepower is 400 more than the Bugatti Chiron, currently one of the world's fastest supercars.

If you're in the rare crossover group of folks who are rich, environmentally conscious and want to drive dangerously fast, Rimac is building your car. The company teased its next-generation Rimac Hypercar and promised to fully unveil it at the Geneva Motor Show on March 6th. It didn't say much else about the EV, but if it's like the original Concept 1, expect to see endless power and torque, a very limited production run and a crazy price tag.

It's a scary day for both The Grand Tour viewers and the motoring world at large. Amazon has revealed that show co-host Richard Hammond was involved in a crash while filming Grand Tour's second season in Switzerland. Hammond thankfully escaped with only a fractured knee, but the incident destroyed the Rimac Concept One electric supercar he was driving (the photo above shows what's left). While it's not certain what led to the crash, Amazon notes that there was no one else embroiled in the incident.

It feels like forever since Croatian car manufacturer Rimac announced its Concept_One electric hypercar. Five years after we first saw the vehicle, the company is finally ready to show off the production model at next month's Geneva Auto Show. It'll be the first of eight Concept_Ones the firm will build and sell to the public, although you'll suddenly think that a Tesla is a bargain when you see the price. According to Autoblog, picking up one of the vehicles will cost you the better part of a million dollars.

For most of us, ultra-realistic racing games like Gran Turismo and Forza Motorsport are as close as we'll ever get to driving the world's most luxurious motors. We've drooled over Rimac Automobili's Concept_One electric hypercar for years, but given that only eight have ever been made, our chances of getting behind the wheel seem pretty slim. Now, the EV has been added to Driveclub, giving you the chance to thrash the high performance racer around Norway, Scotland, Chile and more. If you need a reminder, the $980,000 car boasts a carbon fibre body and 1088 horsepower, which can take you from 0-62 mph in 2.8 seconds. Its green credentials might be irrelevant on a virtual racetrack, but hopefully you can appreciate them all the same in Evolution Studios' (no longer broken) racer.

  • Rimac unveils greyp G12 electric bike with 75 mile range, 40mph top speed

Rimac's Concept One has been something of an enigma, but there's no doubting that the EV maker has just taken the veil off its latest product -- the greyp G12 electric bike. If you're not sure if looks like a motorbike, or regular bicycle, that's okay, because Rimac claims it's both. It can do 40mph (unassisted) with a pedal-free range of 75 miles, after that, you're on your own. With an alleged charge time of 80 minutes (from zero), from any regular power outlet, the G12 could be a winner with city dwellers looking to get about town. Other neat tricks include fingerprint activated ignition that allows different digits to trigger the bike's two modes -- street or speed -- with profiles for up to 50 users available. There's no official word on price or availability, but if you want to become a "dealer," you could expect to take delivery of one as soon as October for 6,000 euros (about $7,900). Pedal past the break for a video of the greyp doing its thing.

  • Rimac delivers Concept_One-based one-off, refuses to pull back the curtain

What's that intriguing shape poking out from underneath the curtain? Rimac Automobili assures us all via its Facebook account that there's a Concept_One in there -- or, at least, a "one-off car based [on it]," marking the delivery of the company's much discussed and sometimes questioned 1,088 horsepower electric supercar. So, why the secrecy? According to the company's namesake executive, Mate Rimac, "the customer wished to control what will be published about the project." Hopefully the wind will blow away that curtain soon enough.

The last time we saw an EV pit itself against a BMW, it wasn't a good day for the German car. On this occasion, the beemer is the EV, and it's one that all the others will officially have to enjoy viewing from behind. The car in question is the Rimac e-M3, the fledgling EV-firm owner's personal custom ride, and it's just been officially acknowledged as the fastest accelerating electric vehicle (with some category caveats). The record-breaking run actually happened April 2011, but it seems the FIA isn't quite so fast when it comes to making things official. The Croatian driver covered the first eighth of a mile in 7.549 seconds, needing less than five more for the same distance again (1/4 mile in 11.808 seconds). This is where the official-dom ends, but the total mile was completed in 35.347, which is still pending the FIA nod. Happy as driver Mate Rimac is, he already thinks there's something faster. What might that be? His new pre-production Concept_One of course. Catch the car in action after the break.

  • Inhabitat's Week in Green: liter of light project, space tourism and a 'Hyperloop' train

Each week our friends at Inhabitat recap the week's most interesting green developments and clean tech news for us -- it's the Week in Green. This summer has been one of the harshest in recent memory in the US, with record heat waves and more than half of the country experiencing the worst drought conditions in more than 50 years. And in an even more troubling development, an iceberg twice the size of Manhattan broke away from Greenland this week. The need to develop clean alternatives to fossil fuels and water-saving technologies is more urgent than ever, but we're making progress in several key areas. In California, scientists fired 192 lasers onto a single point, producing an amazing 500 trillion watts of energy and bringing them one step closer to starting a nuclear fusion reaction that would produce an unlimited supply of clean energy. In another promising development, a teenager in Egypt figured out a way to turn the country's plastic waste into $78 million worth of fuel.

O ye unfaithful, believe. For those of you who saw Rimac's preview of its Concept_One electric supercar and were skeptical of that claimed 2.8-second 0-62MPH time given all the leisurely putting around, the Croatian automaker has followed up with a video proving that this isn't your daddy's EV. It turns out that the 1,088HP-equivalent motor is quick enough to leave a lot of rubber on the tarmac, thank you -- both from a very enthusiastic start and from a healthy amount of drifting. This won't change the need to both drop $980,000 and get in quick on that 88-unit production run, but if you were worried that there wouldn't be a torch-bearer for high-speed EVs during the Tesla Roadster's hiatus, Rimac just put that anxiety to bed.
