<div style="text-align: left;">Panasonic's Toughbook line hasn't only been impressing in <em>extreme</em> durability lately, but also in <em>extreme</em> weight-loss. Joining the 3.2-pound <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/02/panasonic-slips-core-i5-into-worlds-lightest-12-1-inch-toughb/">Tougbook C1</a>, is the newest 12.1-inch Toughbook S9, which weighs just three pounds. And yes, Panny's claiming it's the lightest 12-incher with an optical drive, and our quick research seems to prove that claim right. Even more impressive is the power that's packed into the featherweight chassis -- it's got a Core i5-520M processor, 2GB of RAM, and a shock-mounted 320GB hard drive. Thought that Panasonic gave up the durability for that weightage? You'd be wrong -- the magnesium alloy case can still withstand a 2.5-foot operating drop, meets all the Mil Spec 810-G drop procedures, has a spill-resistant keyboard, and can take more than 220 pounds of pressure on its lid and base. It does sound great for when someone drops it off the airport security belt, but that's until you hear about the physical beating it'll take on your bank account -- it'll retail for $2,499. Yeah, we wish we had better news to end on, but perhaps the press release and pictures below will turn that frown upside down.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/panasonic-toughbook-s9-press-shots/">Panasonic Toughbook S9 press shots</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/panasonic-toughbook-s9-press-shots/#3406655"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/s9clamshell-1285616121_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/panasonic-toughbook-s9-press-shots/#3406656"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/s9closed_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/panasonic-toughbook-s9-press-shots/#3406657"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/s9dramaticangle_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/panasonic-toughbook-s9-press-shots/#3406658"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/s9headon_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/panasonic-toughbook-s9-press-shots/#3406659"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/s9left_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/28/panasonic-toughbook-s9-claims-to-be-the-worlds-lightest-12-1-in/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Panasonic Toughbook S9 claims to be the world's lightest 12.1-inch laptop with a DVD drive, we believe it</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/28/panasonic-toughbook-s9-claims-to-be-the-worlds-lightest-12-1-in/">Panasonic Toughbook S9 claims to be the world's lightest 12.1-inch laptop with a DVD drive, we believe it</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 28 Sep 2010 09:00:00 EST. Corning's darn-near-impenetrable Gorilla glass certainly isn't new -- in fact, we spied it in a few of Motion Computing's tablets <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/08/motion-brings-durable-gorilla-glass-to-c5-and-f5-tablets-tries/">just a few months ago</a> -- but it's still not commonplace on mainstream gizmos. Yet. <i>SmartPlanet</i> sat down with Dr. Donnell Walton, senior applications engineer at Corning, in order to discuss the merits of the display technology as well as its importance in the gadget space. The discussion also mentioned that both Motorola's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Droid/">Droid</a> and Dell's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Adamo/">Adamo</a> (not to mention Cowon's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/29/cowon-s9-review/">S9 PMP</a>) are sporting the glass, which acts to make displays "damage-resistant." Not surprisingly, the company is seeing huge demand in the smartphone arena, where touchscreen-centric phones are being shoved into pockets at random and then costing manufacturers big bucks as return rates creep up. It's a pretty interesting read if you're into that type of thing, and yes, we <em>did </em>just give you permission to try and split your Droid display wide open in a moment of frustration. Just don't count on Motorola to accept that as a valid excuse for your RMA.<br />

It's hard to beat the chrome and titanium black versions of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/cowon%2Cs9">Cowon S9</a> players in terms of aesthetic design. And black is always the best choice to frame its high-contrasting, 3.3-inch AMOLED if you're the type who likes to see the display fade into the device during particularly dark video sequences. Still, choice is good, and white DAPs are trending (again) so why not ceramic white? It's not like the S9's viewable display actually <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/29/cowon-s9-review/">stretches end-to-end like you might assume</a>. <br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/cowon-s9-pales-in-white/">Cowon S9 pales in white</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/cowon-s9-pales-in-white/#2141896"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/07/cowon-s9-whitepicture-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/cowon-s9-pales-in-white/#2141897"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/07/cowon-s9-whitepicture-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/cowon-s9-pales-in-white/#2141899"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/07/cowon-s9-whitepicture-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/cowon-s9-pales-in-white/#2141898"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/07/cowon-s9-whitepicture-5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/cowon-s9-pales-in-white/#2141895"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/07/cowon-s9-whitepicture-6_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Via <a href="http://www.pocketables.net/2009/07/cowon-s9-now-offered-in-ceramic-white.html">Pocketables</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/portableaudio/" rel="tag">Portable Audio</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/portablevideo/" rel="tag">Portable Video</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/14/cowon-s9-pales-in-white/">Cowon S9 pales in white</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 14 Jul 2009 03:50:00 EST. <div align="left">It was bound to happen sooner or later -- this poor <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/29/cowon-s9-review/">Cowon S9</a> got the vivisection treatment and the startling pics have been posted in the <em>Anything But iPod</em> forums. And guess what? It's choc full of tiny components, a little bit of "wax paper or something," and let's not forget that world renowned AMOLED touch screen. This endeavor hasn't been undertaken in vain, however -- the good doctor has included tons of pics and step-by-step instructions in case you ever have to conduct the operation yourself. You know, in the name of science.</div>

We knew you'd do the right thing <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Cowon/">Cowon</a>, we just knew it. Barely a fortnight after the company <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/14/cowon-releases-32gb-s9-pmp-in-korea/">introduced</a> its most capacious <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/S9/">S9</a> to date over in South Korea, said player has made its way stateside... at least that's the impression that we get. Listed now as "in stock" on Amazon, the 32GB Titanium / Black unit is shown as being sold by JetAudio, which just so happens to be Cowon's official online home for sales. If you surf over to the S9 section on JetAudio's website, however, the 16GB model is still listed as the largest one available. We're guessing the latter's admin hasn't had time to update things between that Friday night rave and that six pack of Dos Equis on Saturday, but we hear Amazon has a pretty good reputation, anyway.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.pmptoday.com/2009/05/02/32gb-cowon-s9-now-at-amazon/">PMP Today</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/portableaudio/" rel="tag">Portable Audio</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/portablevideo/" rel="tag">Portable Video</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/03/cowons-32gb-s9-pmp-goes-on-sale-in-america/">Cowon's 32GB S9 PMP goes on sale in America</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sun, 03 May 2009 04:44:00 EST. The Lenovo S9 and S10 have already <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/18/lenovos-ideapad-s9-s10-shows-up-in-fcc-database/">been approved by the FCC</a>, so the appearance of this mysterious nine-inch Lenovo netbook in Uncle Sam's all-knowing database is certainly thought-provoking -- especially since it's got a built-in AT&amp;T-compatible 3G card in it. That suggests to us that Ma Bell's about to start offering a subsidized S9 alongside its current stable of laptops, but we haven't seen or heard anything definitive yet -- do let us know if you spot something amazing in the SAR reports, would you?<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/laptops/" rel="tag">Laptops</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/15/lenovo-netbook-with-built-in-3g-hits-the-fcc-destined-for-atand/">Lenovo netbook with built-in 3G hits the FCC -- destined for AT&amp;T?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 15 Apr 2009 19:39:00 EST. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Cowon/">Cowon</a>'s done a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/12/version-2-10-beta-firmware-makes-your-cowon-s9-a-new-pmp/">commendable job</a> in making the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/29/cowon-s9-review/">S9</a> a force to be reckoned with in the PMP arena, but the 16GB maximum has likely caused quite a few music aficionados to look elsewhere. At long last, the company is releasing a 32GB flavor over in South Korea, though it'll cost you a stiff ₩379,000 ($287) for the privilege of ownership. There's no word on a US release, but we'd wager that it'll be here within a month or two. <em>Right, Cowon</em>?<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.pmptoday.com/2009/04/14/firmware-12-for-32gb-cowon-s9-now-on-sale/">PMPToday</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/portableaudio/" rel="tag">Portable Audio</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/portablevideo/" rel="tag">Portable Video</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/14/cowon-releases-32gb-s9-pmp-in-korea/">Cowon releases 32GB S9 PMP in Korea</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 14 Apr 2009 12:14:00 EST. Slowly but surely, Cowon has been <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/25/cowon-s9-firmware-update-adds-bluetooth-speaker-support/">issuing</a> firmware updates to make its sleek <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/S9/">S9</a> PMP the music player it ought to be. According to a recent leak of the v2.10 beta, it's about to become even more formidable a rival. Reportedly, the forthcoming update -- which can be downloaded now for those kosher with all things beta -- adds in support for widgets, WMV7/8, pitch correction, full screen mode in TV-out and color tags for subtitles. As for improved functionality, we're heard that the entire navigation process has been smoothed over, particularly in the area of browser scrolling. For no other reason than we're just in a particularly generous mood, we're giving away <a href="http://www.cowonamerica.com/">Cowon</a>'s latest portable media player, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/S9/">S9</a>. In case you've been absent for the past month or so, let us remind you that this thing has been <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/18/cowon-s9-pmp-unboxing-and-hands-on/">unboxed</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/29/cowon-s9-review/">reviewed</a>, posted in a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/17/how-would-you-change-cowons-s9-curve/">weekly episode</a> of How Would You Change and even <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/25/cowon-s9-firmware-update-adds-bluetooth-speaker-support/">updated</a> a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/18/cowon-issues-first-firmware-update-for-s9-pmp/">time or two</a> by Cowon itself. If you're ready to take this gently used player into your own loving hands, here's what you need to do. Cowon's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/S9/">S9</a> portable media player had a lot of folks excited -- and understandably so. A bright, expansive AMOLED display. A sleek, curvaceous design. And a codec support list worth drooling over. During <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/29/cowon-s9-review/">our time</a> with the unit, we found the user interface to still be lacking in a few critical departments, though we certainly found a long list of reasons to love it, too. Now that it's been <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/15/cowon-ships-s9-pmp-to-us-soil/">floating around on US soil</a> for a hot minute, we're asking you how you'd tweak it. Are you completely satisfied with the UI? Are there any video formats that have inexplicably refused to play? Is the build quality up to your lofty standards? Let it rip below!<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/portableaudio/" rel="tag">Portable Audio</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/portablevideo/" rel="tag">Portable Video</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/17/how-would-you-change-cowons-s9-curve/">How would you change Cowon's S9 PMP?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sat, 17 Jan 2009 00:22:00 EST. On paper, Cowon's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/18/cowon-s9-pmp-unboxing-and-hands-on/">S9</a> is distinct from what most would <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/07/blue-and-red-zune-120s-available-just-in-time-for-the-holidays/">consider</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/01/samsungs-p3-unboxed-and-caught-on-video/">its</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/iPodnano/">rivals</a>. It packs a curvaceous design, nary a single front panel button, an AMOLED display and a codec support list chock full of formats that audiophiles admire. Clearly, Cowon is aiming to appeal to portable media enthusiasts who are also sticklers for sound quality, with the core functionality consisting of only the basics that one would expect on a PMP. The sector it's diving into already has a pretty strong list of alternatives on the market, which probably means that you're wondering if it really does (or doesn't) stack up. Follow us past the break as we take a closer look at what the S9 brings (and doesn't bring) to the table.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/29/cowon-s9-review/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Cowon S9 review</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/portableaudio/" rel="tag">Portable Audio</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/portablevideo/" rel="tag">Portable Video</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/29/cowon-s9-review/">Cowon S9 review</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 29 Dec 2008 11:00:00 EST. For early adopters who have already taken delivery of their shiny new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/18/cowon-s9-pmp-unboxing-and-hands-on/">Cowon S9</a>, they've already sucked down <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/18/cowon-issues-first-firmware-update-for-s9-pmp/">one firmware update</a> to fix some of the more obvious issues. Now, there's round number two (v2.06) to endure. The company has loosed the second firmware update for its just birthed PMP, with this one adding JPG album art support (for files with the .jpg extension) and fixing a bug that occasionally caused a system reboot after the "remove hardware from PC" message appeared. Most notable, however, is the new inclusion of Bluetooth speaker support, meaning that this device can now stream tunes to BT-enabled sound systems sans cabling or any other black magic. Tap the read link to get your download a-goin'.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/portableaudio/" rel="tag">Portable Audio</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/portablevideo/" rel="tag">Portable Video</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/25/cowon-s9-firmware-update-adds-bluetooth-speaker-support/">Cowon S9 firmware update adds Bluetooth speaker support</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 25 Dec 2008 23:53:00 EST. Yes, already. Before the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/18/cowon-s9-pmp-unboxing-and-hands-on/">8GB S9</a> has even had a chance <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/15/cowon-ships-s9-pmp-to-us-soil/">to become available</a>, Cowon has already issued the first firmware update for its hot little PMP. If you're one of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/17/cowons-16gb-s9-pmp-now-shipping-in-america/">earliest of adopters</a>, you may want to give this one a download / install before flinging your device upside the wall. Just to name a few, the patch fixes bugs when changing boundary settings for music playback, when viewing particular picture files, when the upper buttons are pressed simultaneously and when connecting Bluetooth Mono headsets. Hop on past the break for the full alert, and tap the read link to access the file.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/18/cowon-issues-first-firmware-update-for-s9-pmp/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Cowon issues first firmware update for S9 PMP</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/portableaudio/" rel="tag">Portable Audio</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/portablevideo/" rel="tag">Portable Video</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/18/cowon-issues-first-firmware-update-for-s9-pmp/">Cowon issues first firmware update for S9 PMP</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 18 Dec 2008 18:15:00 EST. Cowon's 16GB <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/S9/">S9</a> may have just started <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/17/cowons-16gb-s9-pmp-now-shipping-in-america/">shipping out</a> yesterday, but we just acquired one of the 8GB models a day before it's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/15/cowon-ships-s9-pmp-to-us-soil/">expected</a> to hit the rest of America. We're planning on spending a little time with this critter to give you our thoughts, but for now, we figured we'd let you toy around in the gallery below to get acquainted. Our first impression upon cracking open the box was along the lines of "wow, this thing is small... and light!" Maybe that zoomed in <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/27/cowon-s9-curve-to-launch-in-the-us-mid-december-with-balls-to-sp/">press shot</a> we've been drooling over had our proportions all jacked up, but needless to say you won't have a tough time fitting this one in your right front pocket. Check out the images below for an unboxing and UI walkthrough that'll surely bring copious amounts of joy into your life.<br /><br /><strong>Update</strong>: Full specifications list now posted after the break for easy reference.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/cowon-s9-pmp-unboxing/">Cowon S9 PMP unboxing</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/cowon-s9-pmp-unboxing/#1233218"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/12/121808-cowon-s9-handson-(1)_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/cowon-s9-pmp-unboxing/#1233198"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/12/121808-cowon-s9-handson-(10)_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/cowon-s9-pmp-unboxing/#1233219"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/12/121808-cowon-s9-handson-(11)_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/cowon-s9-pmp-unboxing/#1233211"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/12/121808-cowon-s9-handson-(12)_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/cowon-s9-pmp-unboxing/#1233209"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/12/121808-cowon-s9-handson-(13)_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/cowon-s9-pmp-hands-on-ui-walkthrough/">Cowon S9 PMP hands-on / UI walkthrough</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/cowon-s9-pmp-hands-on-ui-walkthrough/#1233232"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/12/121809-cowon-s9-ui-(1)_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/cowon-s9-pmp-hands-on-ui-walkthrough/#1233253"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/12/121809-cowon-s9-ui-(10)_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/cowon-s9-pmp-hands-on-ui-walkthrough/#1233254"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/12/121809-cowon-s9-ui-(11)_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/cowon-s9-pmp-hands-on-ui-walkthrough/#1233255"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/12/121809-cowon-s9-ui-(12)_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/cowon-s9-pmp-hands-on-ui-walkthrough/#1233256"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/12/121809-cowon-s9-ui-(13)_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/18/cowon-s9-pmp-unboxing-and-hands-on/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Cowon S9 PMP unboxing and hands-on</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/portableaudio/" rel="tag">Portable Audio</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/portablevideo/" rel="tag">Portable Video</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/18/cowon-s9-pmp-unboxing-and-hands-on/">Cowon S9 PMP unboxing and hands-on</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 18 Dec 2008 12:49:00 EST. We know, it's not <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/15/cowon-ships-s9-pmp-to-us-soil/">December 19th</a> just yet, but Santa's being super proactive this year. As of right now, Cowon's 16GB <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/s9/">S9 PMP</a> is on sale and shipping to US consumers from <em>JetMall</em>. You already know what the $239.99 <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/15/cowon-ships-s9-pmp-to-us-soil/">will buy you</a> -- the question is, are you able to hold off?<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/portableaudio/" rel="tag">Portable Audio</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/portablevideo/" rel="tag">Portable Video</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/17/cowons-16gb-s9-pmp-now-shipping-in-america/">Cowon's 16GB S9 PMP ships early to America</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 17 Dec 2008 15:36:00 EST. Remember those off-the-wall <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/07/cowons-s9-curve-pmp-delayed-for-us/">delay rumors</a>? Yeah, Cowon just put 'em to bed. All of 'em. As of today, the luscious <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/s9/">S9 PMP</a> is off to America, bringing with it a 3.3-inch AMOLED display (480 x 272), 500MHz processor, capacitive touchscreen operation, Bluetooth 2.0 (for stereo headphones), a battery good for 11 hours of video (55 hours for audio), BBE+ sound enhancements, inbuilt microphone, line-in recording and enough codec support to make a grown man weep for joy. The device should be available on December 19th at a variety of e-tailers, and given the $199.99 (8GB) / $239.99 (16GB) price tags, we'd say a certain touch-friendly rival has a lot to worry about. Full release is after the break.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/15/cowon-ships-s9-pmp-to-us-soil/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Cowon ships S9 PMP to US soil</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/portableaudio/" rel="tag">Portable Audio</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/portablevideo/" rel="tag">Portable Video</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/15/cowon-ships-s9-pmp-to-us-soil/">Cowon ships S9 PMP to US soil</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 15 Dec 2008 11:25:00 EST. It's one thing to have a look at a new user interface <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/07/cowons-s9-curve-pmp-delayed-for-us/">in pictures</a>, but watching someone navigate it on video is just so much more meaningful and soul stirring. Cowon's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/S9Curve/">S9</a> isn't due out in South Korea for another five days or so, but it looks like someone with a video camera and a YouTube account completely missed the memo. For a likely limited time, the video just past the break shows off five minutes of admittedly responsive UI interaction, complete with the ability to alter the equalizer preset from the Now Playing screen (what a concept!). Be warned, though -- the first album to pop up is <em>Mamma Mia!</em>. Terrifying, we know.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://asia.cnet.com/blogs/digihunter/post.htm?id=63007870">CNET</a>]<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/11/cowons-s9-curve-gets-toyed-with-on-video-ui-thoroughly-investi/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Cowon's S9 gets toyed with on video, UI thoroughly investigated</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/portableaudio/" rel="tag">Portable Audio</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/portablevideo/" rel="tag">Portable Video</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/11/cowons-s9-curve-gets-toyed-with-on-video-ui-thoroughly-investi/">Cowon's S9 gets toyed with on video, UI thoroughly investigated</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 11 Dec 2008 09:45:00 EST. We've received no official word either way on this, but all the signs are currently pointing to a delay for the US launch of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/s9/">Cowon's S9</a>. The undoubtedly sexy PMP is still set to launch in South Korea this month, but unspecified "production problems" are reportedly responsible for pushing the Stateside shipment back. So, when can we Americans expect to have a US version in our palms? We figuring (and hoping) it'll hit sometime around January at the latest -- any longer than that and we might have to cash in these frequent flier miles for a round-trip jaunt to Seoul.<br /><br /><strong>Update</strong>: Cowon just issued a <a href="http://64.233.179.104/translate_c?u=http%3A%2F%2Fboard.cowon.com%2Fzeroboard%2Fzboard.php%3Fid%3DA01%26no%3D1108&amp;langpair=ko|en&amp;hl=en&amp;ie=UTF8">press release</a> with date, pricing, and more pictures of the UI and hardware. Starting December 16th, the S9 will be available in Korea in 4GB / 8GB / 16GB capacities for 219,000 won ($150), 259,000 won ($178), and 309,000 won ($212), respectively. Oh boy, it's almost here (we think). If we're reading the machine translated text correctly, then Cowon's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/s9%20curve">S9</a>, first revealed in August, is expected to land in the US mid-December. No price was listed for the 8GB / 16GB audio and video player with a 3.3-inch, 480 x 272 pixel AMOLED display and Bluetooth. Cowon is, however, pushing the player's BBE technology (like that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2005/11/05/cowon-releases-the-a2-pmp-in-the-us/">found in the A2</a>) meant to doctor the sound quality. Nothing official on the rather pathetic Cowon America website, but we'll let you know just as soon as something pops.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/portableaudio/" rel="tag">Portable Audio</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/portablevideo/" rel="tag">Portable Video</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/27/cowon-s9-curve-to-launch-in-the-us-mid-december-with-balls-to-sp/">Cowon S9 launching in the US mid-December with balls to spare</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 27 Nov 2008 06:27:00 EST. We tried and we tried but we just couldn't get COWON to show us its new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/s9%20curve">S9 Curve</a> at IFA -- they weren't meeting with the press, only business partners. At least we have a ship date and full specs in consolation. Germany at least will get its hands on the 3.3-inch, 480 x 272-pixel, 16 million color, capacitive touchscreen, AMOLED player at the end of October. The 57.08 x 105.75 x 12.7-mm player (a bit shorter and narrower than the 8-mm thick iPod touch with 4.3-inch display) will initially ship with 8GB / 16GB of storage before getting bumped to 32GB sometime down the road. A 3.5-hour charge off the mains (5.5-hours off USB) will deliver up to 8-hours of video (MPEG-4 SP, WMV9 SP, H.264 BP codecs) or 40 hours of audio (MP3, WMA, OGG, FLAC, WAV formats). Integrated Bluetooth is of the more power hungry 2.0 (not 2.1) variety with support for A2DP stereo and AVRCP remote control profiles. The S9 for Europe supports FM recording and dictation buts lacks the integrated DMB television tuner of its Korean cousin. Line-in recording and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/dab">DAB radio</a> is also in the works.<br /><br />[Thanks, Vesal]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/portableaudio/" rel="tag">Portable Audio</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/portablevideo/" rel="tag">Portable Video</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/09/03/cowons-s9-curve-rocking-retail-next-month/">Cowon's S9 rocking retail next month</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 03 Sep 2008 02:26:00 EST. All that and nearly two days (40 hours) of music playback from a single charge. No price yet but we expect to hear more later this week as the big European IFA show kicks off in Berlin.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/cowons-s9-curve-with-3-3-inch-amoled-touch-screen-kills-with-style/">Cowon's S9 Curve with 3.3-inch AMOLED touch-screen kills with style</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/cowons-s9-curve-with-3-3-inch-amoled-touch-screen-kills-with-style/#996614"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/08/cowon-s9-curve--2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/cowons-s9-curve-with-3-3-inch-amoled-touch-screen-kills-with-style/#996613"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/08/cowon-s9-curve--3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/cowons-s9-curve-with-3-3-inch-amoled-touch-screen-kills-with-style/#996612"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/08/cowon-s9-curve-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Via <a href="http://asia.cnet.com/blogs/digihunter/post.htm?id=63005976">CNET Asia</a>]<br /></div>

The follow-on to Motorola's sporty and moderately popular (for a stereo bluetooth headset, anyway) <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/S9/">S9</a> may not have launched yet -- a disappointment, considering the original plan for a Q2 release when it was <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/07/motorola-sets-ears-on-fire-with-s9-hd-bluetooth-stereo-headset/">announced at CES</a> -- but perhaps a little last-minute paint job was the reason for the delay. We've now spotted the S9-HD in a bright white getup with blue accents, a far cry from the black of the model shown at CES (and presumably still slated for launch) or the red of the original, but let's not kid ourselves: this one has a way better chance of finding its way into an ear canal or two. Hopefully we'll see it within a few weeks -- just in time for a successor to be launched at CES 2009, no doubt.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/multimedia/" rel="tag">Multimedia</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/peripherals/" rel="tag">Peripherals</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/motorola/" rel="tag">Motorola</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/19/motorolas-s9-hd-looks-white-as-a-sheet/">Motorola's S9-HD looks white as a sheet</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 19 Aug 2008 15:13:00 EST. Hey, look -- another cart before the horse scenario! Long after <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/04/lenovos-ideapad-s-netbook-caught-on-video/">coming to grips</a> with the fact that Lenovo was indeed producing an IdeaPad <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/17/lenovos-ideapad-s9-lite-gets-a-site-more-specs-and-discounted/">S9</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/04/lenovo-goes-netbook-with-ideapad-s10/">S10</a>, the netbook(s) have surfaced in the FCC's lair. Interestingly, the User Guide looks to tackle both machines in one fell swoop, suggesting that there's not enough difference to warrant the writing of two whole pamphlets that no one will read. There's not too much here that you didn't already know, but it's always a great sign to see a machine make it past this <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/09/lenovo-shows-off-stable-of-olympics-themed-usb-flash-drives/">federal hurdle</a>.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/laptops/" rel="tag">Laptops</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/18/lenovos-ideapad-s9-s10-shows-up-in-fcc-database/">Lenovo's IdeaPad S9 / S10 shows up in FCC database</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 18 Aug 2008 02:14:00 EST. If you've been making a mess of the floor (you know, with drool) waiting for Lenovo's IdeaPad <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/S9/">S9</a> netbook to come flying in your direction, here's a little something to further whet your appetite. A "Lite" version of the device appears to have gotten official pricing, specs, a site, and apparently a deal if you buy three at once (at least in Hong Kong). The diminutive laptop will feature that Intel N270 Atom CPU (at 1.6GHz) we've already heard about, an 8.9-inch SWVGA display, 512MB of RAM, a 4GB SSD, and will apparently utilize a Linux build. That last point is of note as this model was previously believed to be carrying around an install of Windows XP. The new literature also suggests that the S9 (and presumably the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/S10/">S10</a>) will pack a multi-touch trackpad, and be available in white, red, or pink. The S9 Lite will be launched next month, and prices run from HKD 2,899 (about $371) for a single model down to HKD 1,933 ($247) if you pick up three at once. And hey, who doesn't need three small laptops?<br /><br />[Thanks, Joe; Via <a href="http://www.umpcfever.com/news/?postid=1171">UMPC Fever</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/laptops/" rel="tag">Laptops</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/17/lenovos-ideapad-s9-lite-gets-a-site-more-specs-and-discounted/">Lenovo's IdeaPad S9 Lite gets a site, more specs, and discounted pricing... in Hong Kong</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sun, 17 Aug 2008 14:09:00 EST. We mentioned it briefly the other day, but just so we're clear: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/04/lenovo-goes-netbook-with-ideapad-s10/">Lenovo's S10</a> (pictured) won't be alone this fall. The company is also pushing out an 8.9-inch version for a few non-US markets, and dubbing it the S9. According to Digitimes, the S9 will be running an 8GB SSD instead of the 80GB HDD of its big brother, but specs otherwise will be pretty much the same. The laptop should retail for 12,900 Taiwan dollars, about $420 US (though we can't really rely on a straight exchange rate for this), but a decent bit cheaper than the 17,900 Taiwan dollar S10.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.tgdaily.com/content/view/38757/149/">TG Daily</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/laptops/" rel="tag">Laptops</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/06/lenovos-8-9-inch-s9-netbook-is-not-for-you/">Lenovo's 8.9-inch S9 netbook is not for you </a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 06 Aug 2008 12:31:00 EST. You turn to new and strange patents and hope nobody notices your flagging product line, of course. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/motorola">Motorola</a> has decided that monitoring vital signs via a Bluetooth headset and watch-like device combo and a new iteration of its S9 headset is where it's at. The headset -- and watch? -- will apparently gather data like heart rate, body temperature, and such, zap it to your headset and on to a server for further processing. The S9 seems to be mostly unchanged save for some touch control panels for adjusting volume, answering calls, and wandering through your tunes. Not sure if we'll ever see the first of these in any real world application, but we expect the new <a href="http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&amp;ct=res&amp;cd=1&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.engadget.com%2F2008%2F01%2F07%2Fmotorola-sets-ears-on-fire-with-s9-hd-bluetooth-stereo-headset%2F&amp;ei=-3NSSO-dG5a8nQPrvq2jDw&amp;usg=AFQjCNG9dIwS8ZTsDcP5erH8jj31xH2coA&amp;sig2=-e9NKXsMNtidoAi7DLZCGw">MOTOACTV S9</a> headset will appear at some point.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/peripherals/" rel="tag">Peripherals</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/motorola/" rel="tag">Motorola</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/13/motorola-gets-into-biometrics-touch-control-with-new-patents/">Motorola gets into biometrics, touch control with new patents</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 13 Jun 2008 21:28:00 EST. <div align="left">As <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/07/motorola-sets-ears-on-fire-with-s9-hd-bluetooth-stereo-headset/">mentioned</a> a couple days ago, Motorola pushed out a pretty minor revision to its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/02/12/hands-on-with-motorolas-motoactv-s9/">S9 stereo Bluetooth</a> wraparound headset. We bumped into one while wandering the booth and snapped a few pics of it before it wandered away. First impressions -- without actually using it, cause, that's kinda gross -- are that physically, it looks just about identical to the previous effort with the small exception of the minor visible changes to the buds.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hands-on-with-motorolas-s9-hd-stereo-bluetooth-headset/">Hands-on with Motorola's S9-HD stereo Bluetooth headset</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hands-on-with-motorolas-s9-hd-stereo-bluetooth-headset/#570821"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgetmobile.com/media/2008/01/motos9hdhands_00_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hands-on-with-motorolas-s9-hd-stereo-bluetooth-headset/#570822"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgetmobile.com/media/2008/01/motos9hdhands_01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hands-on-with-motorolas-s9-hd-stereo-bluetooth-headset/#570823"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgetmobile.com/media/2008/01/motos9hdhands_02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hands-on-with-motorolas-s9-hd-stereo-bluetooth-headset/#570824"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgetmobile.com/media/2008/01/motos9hdhands_03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hands-on-with-motorolas-s9-hd-stereo-bluetooth-headset/#570825"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgetmobile.com/media/2008/01/motos9hdhands_04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></div>

<div align="left">What's better than the music-centric MOTOROKR <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/08/motorola-announces-motorizr-z6/">Z6</a> slider you ask? One that is brought to you in conjunction with the Australian Recording Industry Association -- think RIAA, but Australia's version -- of course. Released exclusively through Crazy John's on a minimum plan of AUD $35 over 24 months (that's AUD $840), this fella definitely doesn't come cheap. Included as pack-ins are the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/02/12/hands-on-with-motorolas-motoactv-s9/">MOTOROKR S9</a> Bluetooth stereo headphones, a 1GB memory card, and a $25 ringtone and wallpaper pack. The impetus behind this partnership -- other than to collect info about all your stolen music and get you busted (wink, wink) -- is to give Z6 owners direct access to ARIA's music chart from their handset and hopefully give Moto's flagging <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/07/13/samsung-passes-motorola-takes-number-two-market-share-spot/">sales performance</a> a much needed boost. Nice handset, nice headset, but these two may make strange bedfellows -- at least in the public's eyes -- if the ARIA is as unpopular as the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/ringtones/page/2/">RIAA</a> is over here.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.moconews.net/entry/419-australian-recording-industry-association-branded-moto-phone/">mocoNews</a>]<br /></div>

Why hasn't stereo Bluetooth become ubiquitous? The promise of cutting the wire from the player to the ears sounds seductive enough, but for a variety of reasons -- poor support and lack of quality product chief among them -- the technology has failed to catch on en masse with the listening public. When we first saw the S9 <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/09/motorolas-motoactv-s9-bluetooth-headset/">debut at CES last month</a>, we've gotta confess, we were less than enthused; we figured we were in for more of the same awkwardness that has plagued A2DP peripherals to date. To be blunt, it looked big, heavy, awkward, and altogether a little uncomfortable. A month later, we're delighted to report that we're eating those words right up.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/02/12/hands-on-with-motorolas-motoactv-s9/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Hands-on with Motorola's MOTOACTV S9!</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/multimedia/" rel="tag">Multimedia</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/peripherals/" rel="tag">Peripherals</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/reviews/" rel="tag">Reviews</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/02/12/hands-on-with-motorolas-motoactv-s9/">Hands-on with Motorola's MOTOACTV S9!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 12 Feb 2007 16:38:00 EST. Motorola announced that they will be giving a customized <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/12/20/motorizr-z3-gets-reviewed/">MOTORIZR Z3</a> to the top 25 nominees from this years Oscar awards. As it turns out, the winners of the soon-to-be released (stateside) slider will come in a custom made box with the nominees name on it along with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/07/29/motorola-adds-headsets-to-match-new-lineup/">H800</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/09/motorolas-motoactv-s9-bluetooth-headset/">S9</a> Bluetooth headsets. Now, if the nominees were getting that svelte <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/08/motorola-announces-motorizr-z6/">Z6</a> slider we've been talking about, we might just have to make a move for one of them.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/motorola/" rel="tag">Motorola</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gsm/" rel="tag">GSM</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gprs/" rel="tag">GPRS</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/edge/" rel="tag">EDGE</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/misc/" rel="tag">Misc</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/02/05/motorola-rizr-being-given-way-at-the-oscars/">Motorola RIZR being given way at the Oscars</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 05 Feb 2007 13:53:00 EST. Introduced at <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/08/live-from-gary-shapiros-and-ed-zanders-ces-keynote/">Ed Zander's CES keynote</a>, Moto is positioning the A2DP-compliant <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/11/24/fcc-fridays/">MOTOACTV S9</a> as a shout out to the athletes (and fitness freaks, and... uh, pretty much anyone that works out once in a while) by making it fairly robust -- by wireless headset standards, anyway -- while phone controls and a mic will let you take that critical call without getting off the Stairmaster. The inner part of the device seems to be available in black or red, though the outside (that is, the only part others will see) will only come in black when it rolls deep later this half. The digicam-happy folks at Digital Camera Review recently got a chance to give Nikon's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/08/24/nikon-intros-five-new-coolpix-models/">Coolpix S9</a> compact digital camera a thorough going over, finding it fairly well-suited to those looking for a simple, inexpensive camera, but obviously not intended for more demanding photogs. The camera itself packs a 6.1 megapixel sensor, 3x optical zoom, and 2.5-inch LCD into a compact <span name="intelliTxt" id="intelliTxt"> 3.6 x 2.3 x 0.8-inch, all-metal package, though it lacks the WiFi connectivity of some of its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/search/?q=%2Bcoolpix+%2Bwifi">Coolpix brethren</a>. Performance-wise, the S9 came through with generally good image quality, though Digital Camera Review found the reds a little to orangey for their taste. They were also disappointed with the cam's lackluster battery life (enough for about 100 shots) and surprisingly noisy zoom motor, as well as lack of manual exposure controls. At least it won't put too much hurt on the old bank account, retailing for $250 with a number of retailers already offering it for closer to the $200 mark.<br /></span><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/10/18/nikon-coolpix-s9-compact-reviewed/">Nikon Coolpix S9 compact reviewed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 18 Oct 2006 06:41:00 EST. With the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/08/21/apple-gathering-press-at-photokina/">Photokina</a> trade show just around around the corner, we've been expecting an onslaught of cameras, and Nikon today proved that its no slouch; the venerable manufacturer has introduced a total of five new members to its lineup of Coolpix consumer cams. We'll start out with the S7c, a compact 7.1 megapixel shooter highlighted by a huge 3-inch LCD, maximum ISO of 1600, and like the previous <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/02/21/nikons-unveils-coolpix-l-p-and-s-series-cameras/">P3 and S6</a>, that sweet WiFi radio for wirelessly sending your winning shots over the internet (including through email). You're also getting 30fps VGA movie capabilities (with sound), electronic image stabilization, 14MB of internal memory, but as usual, only a 3x optical zoom. Keep on reading for pics and deets on the rest of the new Coolpix posse...<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Update:</span> Oh, and did we mention T-Mobile Hotspot users will also be able to use the S7c with their WiFi account using at Coolpix Connect feature? <a href="http://www.prnewswire.com/cgi-bin/stories.pl?ACCT=109&amp;STORY=/www/story/08-24-2006/0004421198&amp;EDATE=">Because they can</a>.
