There's a new king atop Sony's line of ES projectors: the VPL-VW1000ES. Presented at CEDIA this afternoon, it bypasses all the beamers Sony's delivered for home use so far -- including the recent <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/VPLHW30AES/">VPL-HW30AES</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/VPLVW95ES/">VPL-VW95ES</a> models -- by featuring a stunning <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/4K/">4K</a> resolution, four times that of standard HD projectors based on an all new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/SXRD/">SXRD</a> panel. Scheduled to go on sale this December it also claims a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio and 2,000 ANSI lumens of brightness that allows it to project on screens of sizes up to 200-inches. Whether or not you can scrape together the ducats for a 4K projector this Christmas, there are other options for home theater nuts in the form of two new receivers for the ES line that will also be available. The STR-DA5700ES and STR-DA3700ES will ship in November but more than their hardware specs, they feature a new onscreen UI that's supposed to be easier to use. The only device at the presentation with a pricetag was the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/hmz-t1">HMZ-T1</a> 3D viewer <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/31/sony-hmz-t1-headset-hits-ifa-we-go-hands-on-video/">we tried out at IFA last week</a>, which has been announced for the US in November with a price "around" $799. Expect more in person pics in a moment, meanwhile the press releases after the break have all the information currently available.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update</strong>: Now with more pictures. During the presentation Sony showed a 4K clip from its upcoming <em>Spiderman</em> flick on a VPL-VW1000ES that looked every bit as beautiful as you might imagine. Also in the gallery is a shot of the new "activity based UI" for the receivers that looks at least something like the graphical upgrade the XMB has always needed. You'll also spy one more device, the funky new SA-NS500 <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/06/sony-unveils-new-homeshare-network-speakers-iphone-docks-and-w/">Network Speaker</a>. It's a portable sound blaster with 6 hours of battery life and AirPlay compatibility for $399, shipping in November.<br />

We've finally received the official US information (press release after the break) about Sony's latest addition to its line of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/SXRD/">SXRD</a> projectors, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/09/sony-reveals-midrange-vpl-hw30es-3d-projector-on-the-way-next-mont/">VPL-HW30ES</a>. The biggest news here is the price, and this one is rocking a $3,699 MSRP. Slipping under the $3,000 barrier really would have made our eyes pop, but as it stands it's still an impressive array of tech for the dollar. Otherwise the details remain the same as we'd heard yesterday, although the press release acknowledges that it will be available in a bundle with two pairs of 3D glasses and the IR sync transmitter as the VPL-HW30AES. Those accessories will otherwise run $129 for the glasses and $79 for the IR transmitter, no word on a bundle price.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/10/sonys-new-3d-vpl-hw30es-projector-is-official-for-the-us-too-c/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sony's new 3D VPL-HW30ES projector is official for the US too, costs $3,699</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/10/sonys-new-3d-vpl-hw30es-projector-is-official-for-the-us-too-c/">Sony's new 3D VPL-HW30ES projector is official for the US too, costs $3,699</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 10 Jun 2011 13:59:00 EST. We all know you <a href="http://hd.engadget.com/2011/05/15/poll-why-dont-you-have-a-projector/">deserve to live the projector lifestyle</a>, but fitting Sony's first home projector with 3D -- the $10k (MSRP) <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/23/sonys-vpl-vw90es-3d-projector-priced-and-dated-for-the-us/">VPL-VW90ES that launched last fall </a>-- into one's budget might be a little tough. Now the company is launching the "affordable" VPL-HW30ES for the rest of us this year, featuring some of the same 240Hz SXRD tech in a cheaper package. There's no word yet on pricing or a ship date here in the US, but Europe and Japan get it next month with a pricetag of 370,000 yen ($4,626 US) in the latter. That lower price nabs specs like a claimed 70,000:1 contrast ratio and 1,300 lumens of brightness and all the picture adjustment settings befitting a product rocking the Elevated Standard tag, along with an upgraded 3D system to reduce crosstalk. 3D compatibility is achieved with Sony's new lighter active shutter 3D glasses and an add-on IR sync device that are both sold separately -- no complex <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/26/sony-stands-behind-its-digital-projectors-claims-the-only-thing/">lens switching</a> necessary.<br />

Say hello to the latest additions to Sony's lineup of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/SXRD/">SXRD</a> projectors announced at <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/cedia2010">CEDIA 2010</a>, the VPL-VW90ES and the VPL-VWPRO1. Previously <a href="http://hd.engadget.com/2010/09/01/sony-announces-vpl-vw90es-3d-projector-at-ifa-2010/">introduced at IFA</a>, the VPL-VW90ES is not only Sony's first projector to wear the Elevated Standard brand and include all the custom installer tidbits that go with that, but it's also the first to do 3D. The MSRP for all that high end construction, 240Hz framerate and 1,000 ANSI lumens brightness is a buck under $10,000 when it ships in November. Just in case you don't have that in your couch cushions, it's also introduced a new 2D-only model at the lower end of the line, the VPL-VWPRO1 has a higher brightness rating than its more expensive cousin, but a lower contrast ratio and price of $3,400, available in October. Check the press release after the break for all the specs available or just peek in the gallery for our hands-on pics.

After a quiet year in <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/sony,projector">projectors</a>, Sony's VPL-VW90ES is landing with a bang as the company's first 3D model. With a 240Hz SXRD panel, it syncs up with the same active shutter glasses used with Sony's 3DTVs. The rated contrast ratio is now up to 150,000:1, while the fan noise measures at just 22db. No word yet on a price (last year's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/09/sony-brings-projectors-for-everyone-with-vpl-vw85-and-vpl-hw15/">VPL-VW85 started at $8k</a>) but it's shipping in Europe in November, so if any of the TVs we've seen so far just aren't large enough, you know what to buy.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/01/sony-announces-vpl-vw90es-3d-projector-at-ifa-2010/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sony announces VPL-VW90ES 3D projector at IFA 2010</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/01/sony-announces-vpl-vw90es-3d-projector-at-ifa-2010/">Sony announces VPL-VW90ES 3D projector at IFA 2010</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 01 Sep 2010 13:12:00 EST. Along with the rest of its <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/tag/cedia2009">CEDIA 2009</a> announcements, Sony will be showing off new projectors. Up first is the VPL-VW85 (pictured above) which one ups the exiting VPL-VW70 and <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/09/11/sony-brings-1080p-bravia-vpl-vw80-sxrd-projector-to-europe/">VPL-VW80</a> models by combining the company's 120Hz Motionflow frame insertion tech, 120,000:1 contrast ratio, 800 ANSI lumens, RS-232C and an anamorphic zoom lens in an $8,000 package. If that's too rich for your blood, the VPL-HW15 (picture after the break) offers a spec bump over the <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/09/03/sony-trots-out-1080p-sxrd-bravia-vpl-vw70-and-vpl-hw10-projector/">VPL-HW10</a> with 60,000:1 contrast ratio and a lower initial MSRP at just $2,800 when both of these launch in October.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/09/sony-brings-projectors-for-everyone-with-vpl-vw85-and-vpl-hw15/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sony brings projectors for everyone with VPL-VW85 &amp; VPL-HW15</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/09/sony-brings-projectors-for-everyone-with-vpl-vw85-and-vpl-hw15/">Sony brings projectors for everyone with VPL-VW85 &amp; VPL-HW15</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 09 Sep 2009 17:00:00 EST. Sony's new VPL-GH10 model might be just the thing. Packing a more modest 1920x1080 pixels and Sony's 120Hz Motionflow technology with dark frame insertion, you should get crispy images, even during the most intense Call of Duty sessions. Motorized lens shifts, adjustments via Ethernet and a DVI interface for connection to honest-to-goodness image generators round out the package. Heck, those motorized lens shifts alone might make your couch-potato self eye this model over the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/VPLHW10/">VPL-HW10</a>; just know the price is sure to be targeted more towards "industrial" than "consumer" use when it shows up this spring.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/displays/" rel="tag">Displays</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/sony/" rel="tag">Sony</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/lcos/" rel="tag">LCoS</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/projector/" rel="tag">Projector</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/06/sony-rolls-out-vpl-gh10-sxrd-projector-for-industrial-types/">Sony rolls out VPL-GH10 SXRD projector for industrial types</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sat, 06 Dec 2008 17:33:00 EST. RPTVs with SXRD panels may have <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/12/27/sony-officially-quits-rear-projection-tv-production/">fallen</a> from the Sony roadmap, but the tech still gets some love with the company's front projectors. We got our own <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/09/04/hands-on-with-sonys-sxrd-bravia-vpl-vw70-and-vpl-hw10-projector/">hands on</a> the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/VPLHW10/">VPL-HW10</a> model at CEDIA 2008, and it passed the styling test quite well, thanks. The lucky folks at CNET have put the unit to test, where it turned in a solid performance that holds up pretty well given the $3,500 price point. Sure, the unit isn't a retina-searing light canon and the grayscale calibration deviated from ideal in the red and green, but overall picture quality -- you know, what you'll appreciate when not watching test patterns -- stood up quite well. And if you're stickler for black level performance, it's hard to beat SXRD in a beamer. <br /> <br /> [Via <a href="http://www.tvsnob.com/archives/023037.php">TVSnob</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/reviews/" rel="tag">Reviews</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/displays/" rel="tag">Displays</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/sony/" rel="tag">Sony</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/lcos/" rel="tag">LCoS</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/projector/" rel="tag">Projector</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/26/sonys-vpl-hw10-turns-in-solid-performance-on-the-cnet-bench/">Sony's VPL-HW10 turns in solid performance on the CNET bench</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 26 Nov 2008 10:31:00 EST. Picking up where the <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2006/10/25/sonys-18-000-lumen-srx-r220-projector-on-sale-early-2007/">SRX-R220</a> left off, Sony's new SRX-T110 / SRX-T105 4k x 2k projectors are likely headed right to a museum, cinema (<a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/01/05/poll-have-you-seen-a-movie-on-a-4k-projector/">lucky</a>!), or "digital planetarium" near you. Each SXRD device touts a staggering 4,096 x 2,160 native resolution and contrast ratios of 2,500:1. Separately, the T110 comes in much brighter than the T105, offering 11,000 lumens over the latter's 5,500. Those of you hoping to sneak one of these into your home cinema without placing too heavy a burden on the <strike>plastic</strike> Centurion will probably be disappointed; the T110 will ring up at &yen;12.7 million ($120,460), while the T105 demands &yen;8.3 million ($78,725). Picking up where the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/10/25/sonys-18-000-lumen-srx-r220-projector-on-sale-early-2007/">SRX-R220</a> left off, Sony's new SRX-T110 / SRX-T105 4k x 2k projectors are likely headed right to a museum, cinema (<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/05/poll-have-you-seen-a-movie-on-a-4k-projector/">lucky</a>!), or "digital planetarium" near you. Both should arrive in Japan this November.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://74.125.93.104/translate_c?hl=en&amp;u=http://av.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/20080917/sony2.htm&amp;usg=ALkJrhjycC7dRkYyi3-WCQTNm7e2SGyHsw">Impress</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/displays/" rel="tag">Displays</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/sony/" rel="tag">Sony</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/projector/" rel="tag">Projector</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/09/17/sony-stuns-with-srx-t110-srx-t105-4k-x-2k-projectors/">Sony stuns with SRX-T110 / SRX-T105 4k x 2k projectors</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 17 Sep 2008 11:22:00 EST. While we were just able to take a look at Sony's <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/09/04/hands-on-with-sonys-sxrd-bravia-vpl-vw70-and-vpl-hw10-projector/">BRAVIA VPL-VW70 SXRD at CEDIA</a>, it appears that the company is showing Europe a little love with the awfully similar VPL-VW80. The Full HD beamer includes High Frame Rate SXRD panels, a 100Hz Motionflow Dark Frame Insertion system, the BRAVIA ENGINE 2 processing tech and a 2.5-millisecond response time. You'll also find a 60,000:1 contrast ratio, Advanced Iris 2, electronic panel alignment, two HDMI connectors and a 1.6x motorized zoom lens. Unfortunately, there's no mention of a price and / or release date, but we'll go way out on a limb here and suggest you start saving up immediately.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.aboutprojectors.com/news/2008/09/11/sony-announced-vpl-vw80-projector/">AboutProjectors</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/displays/" rel="tag">Displays</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hdtv/" rel="tag">HDTV</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/homeentertainment/" rel="tag">Home Entertainment</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/09/11/sony-brings-1080p-bravia-vpl-vw80-sxrd-projector-to-europe/">Sony brings 1080p BRAVIA VPL-VW80 SXRD projector to Europe</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 11 Sep 2008 23:18:00 EST. Sony's <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/09/04/sony-shows-off-prototype-400-disc-blu-ray-mega-changer/">400-disc BD Mega Changer</a> was just a small part of what it had going on at CEDIA, and we couldn't pass up the chance to photograph its two newest SXRD BRAVIA beamers. The <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/09/03/sony-trots-out-1080p-sxrd-bravia-vpl-vw70-and-vpl-hw10-projector/">VPL-VW70 and VPL-HW10</a> projectors didn't look all that different than previous units in the family, with smooth lines, a rather large body and all of the ports conveniently tucked on one side. At $8,000 and $3,500 (respectively), they ain't cheap, but even those tags are minuscule compared to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2005/09/06/sonys-latest-hd-projectors-the-vpl-vw100-hd-sxrd-and-vpl-hs60/">similar units</a> just a few years back. We already knew that Sony's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/28/sony-vpl-hw10-sxrd-projector-peeks-from-behind-the-curtain/">VPL-HW10</a> was well on its way to retail shelves, but now you can mark it down -- it, along with the VPL-VW70, are officially official here in Denver. This 1080p SXRD two-fer offers up 24p True Cinema technology and the BRAVIA Engine video signal processing engine. As for the VPL-VW70, it checks in with a 60,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio and 800 ANSI lumens; the VPL-HW10 offers up half the contrast ratio and 1,000 ANSI lumens for use in brighter areas. Full specifications are just after the cut, but if you're anxious for pricing: the VW70 will hit this November for a staggering $8,000, while the HW10 can be had later this month for around $3,500.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/09/03/sony-trots-out-1080p-sxrd-bravia-vpl-vw70-and-vpl-hw10-projector/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sony trots out 1080p SXRD BRAVIA VPL-VW70 and VPL-HW10 projectors</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/displays/" rel="tag">Displays</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/sony/" rel="tag">Sony</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/projector/" rel="tag">Projector</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/09/03/sony-trots-out-1080p-sxrd-bravia-vpl-vw70-and-vpl-hw10-projector/">Sony trots out 1080p SXRD BRAVIA VPL-VW70 and VPL-HW10 projectors</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 03 Sep 2008 19:00:00 EST. Sony's family of projectors just grew by one, with the 1080p VPL-HW10 combining triple-panel SXRD technology, the new <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/tag/BRAVIA/">BRAVIA</a> Engine 2 eight step image processing, 1000 ANSI lumens, 30,000:1 contrast ratio and x.v.Color support. Dual HDMI inputs, HDMI-CEC control tech, 24p True Cinema, Real Color Processing and quiet 22dB operation ensure a top of the line home theater experience -- for something (no MSRP or shipping details here) less than the reigning king of the hill <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/06/sonys-vpl-vw200-and-vw60-sxrd-projectors-come-stateside/%5D">VPL-VW200</a> and another as-yet-unrevealed higher-end model. We've got to say, we really, really like where this is going. As 4K slowly but <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/18/sony-loading-up-four-theatres-with-4k-sxrd-digital-cinema-system/">surely</a> begins to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/12/11/sony-brings-4k-srx-r220-digital-cinema-systems-to-two-singapore/">slide into cinemas</a>, Sony is getting all proactive on us by creating a specialized business group "that will provide movie theater owners with a variety of tools to support the sales and marketing of 4K <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/10/25/sonys-18-000-lumen-srx-r220-projector-on-sale-early-2007/">CineAlta</a> digital projection systems in the United States." According to the crew's senior VP Michael Fidler, his team's goal is to "accelerate" the 4K adoption process by "promoting greater awareness of the many benefits of 4K versus 2K projection." Now, get to work -- we want our 4K theaters, and we <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/05/poll-have-you-seen-a-movie-on-a-4k-projector/">want them</a> now.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.aboutprojectors.com/news/2008/03/18/sony-creates-new-division-in-support-of-4k-technology/">AboutProjectors</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/industry/" rel="tag">Industry</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/displays/" rel="tag">Displays</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/sony/" rel="tag">Sony</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/projector/" rel="tag">Projector</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/21/sony-creates-business-group-to-support-4k-cinealta-digital-proje/">Sony creates business group to support 4K CineAlta digital projection systems</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 21 Mar 2008 03:48:00 EST. Among the outpouring of new <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/category/projector/">projectors</a> at CES comes a stately one from LG. The AF115 SXRD projector offers up a native 1,920 x 1,080 resolution, DSP HQV Realta, 1,300 ANSI lumens, a 30,000:1 contrast ratio, twin HDMI 1.3 connectors, ISF calibration and ultra-quiet operation. That's right, babies. We've seen <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Sony/">Sony</a> play this hand in <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/12/26/buy-a-1080p-bravia-and-sony-australia-will-toss-in-a-ps3-for-fre/">other parts</a> of our great big world, and now the S-gang is bringing this sweet bacon on home... er, to the States. According to a promotion we've caught wind of, if you get yourself approved for the Sony Visa, then promptly purchase a Sony HDTV at the Sony Rewards store (out of a pool of models from the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/BRAVIA/">BRAVIA</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/SXRD/">SXRD</a> lines), the good folks at Sony will throw a free PlayStation 3 your way. Of course, there's a few hoops you have to jump through, the deal ends on December 31st, and obviously you'll need a half-decent credit score, but if the suits approve your transaction, this is a pretty solid deal. Hit the read link for all the info -- just make sure you read the fine print.<br /><br />[Thanks, Stephen]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/sony/" rel="tag">Sony</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/12/28/sony-offering-free-playstation-3-with-hdtv-purchase/">Sony offering free PlayStation 3 with HDTV purchase</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 28 Dec 2007 21:28:00 EST. Feeling a bit bummed that Santa didn't deliver that swank new front projector you'd been <strike>asking</strike> pleading for? Trust us, it's for the best. Apparently, Sony is looking to release its VPL-VW40 to the masses at the end of January, and judging by the specs, it looks an awful lot like the discontinued <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/08/30/sony-pearl-vpl-vw50-1080p-sxrd-projector-shown-dated-and-priced/">VPL-VW50</a> -- save for the price. The BRAVIA SXRD PJ sports a 1080p native resolution, 15,000:1 contrast ratio, a 12-bit Panel Drive Full Digital Chassis and an ARC-F lens. Additionally, you'll find a couple of HDMI ports, VGA, RS-232 and composite / S-Video / component jacks. Granted, there's no little birdie giving us the inside scoop, but we'd bet that Sony gives this thing its fair share of floor space at CES -- particularly the oh-so-tempting $2,999.99 price tag.<br /><br />[Thanks, Jordan]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/displays/" rel="tag">Displays</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/sony/" rel="tag">Sony</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/projector/" rel="tag">Projector</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/12/27/sonys-1080p-vpl-vw40-projector-set-for-january-release/">Sony's 1080p VPL-VW40 projector set for January release</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 27 Dec 2007 08:27:00 EST. Granted, there's no little birdie giving us the inside scoop, but we'd bet that Sony gives this thing its fair share of floor space at CES -- particularly the oh-so-tempting $2,999.99 price tag.<br /><br />[Thanks, Jordan]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/displays/" rel="tag">Displays</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hdtv/" rel="tag">HDTV</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/homeentertainment/" rel="tag">Home Entertainment</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/12/27/sonys-1080p-vpl-vw40-projector-set-for-january-release/">Sony's 1080p VPL-VW40 projector set for January release</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 27 Dec 2007 08:27:00 EST. It's unconfirmed at the moment, but we're hearing that Sony is planning to discontinue sales of all rear-projection HDTVs, including its 3LCD and <a href="http://engadgethd.com/tag/sxrd">SXRD</a> lines, after current inventories are exhausted to focus on the hot-selling Bravia LCD line. We've been tipped on it twice today and now This Week In Consumer Electronics is reporting that a Sony spokesperson has told them that "We are moving our resources more toward LCD TV, because that's what people really want." It looks like all backorders for the KDSZ70XBR5 are being canceled, as the unit will never be manufactured, and Sony's making a "no promises" effort to fill backorders for the KDF46E3000 and KDS60A3000. The move isn't exactly unprecedented or even all that <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2007/09/01/study-predicts-rip-for-rptv-s-by-2011/">surprising</a> -- Toshiba, Philips and <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2007/11/08/hitachi-pulls-the-plug-on-rptvs-in-north-america/">Hitachi</a> have all stopped producing rear-projection sets, but Sony's SXRDs were still <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2006/01/25/is-sonys-sxrd-really-americas-favorite-hdtv/">extremely</a> <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2006/11/10/rptv-sets-dominate-latest-american-hdtv-sales-figures/">popular</a> and it's strange to see them get dropped just like that. Your lucky cities will soon host a total of 54 CineAlta SXRD <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2005/10/25/sonys-sxrd-4k-projector/">4K digital cinema systems</a> from Sony, with an unspecified mix of 10,000 lumen SRX-R210 and 18,000 lumen SRX-R220 models planned to shock and wow customers at four AMC locales. The units were unsurprisingly crafted specifically for use in (home?) theaters, and will be paired up with Sony's LMT-100 Media Block servers. Barring any unforeseen disasters, installation should begin next month in the aforementioned areas, and holiday crowds should be enjoying a delightful visual experience before the year's end.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.tgdaily.com/content/view/34432/118/">TGDaily</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/displays/" rel="tag">Displays</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/sony/" rel="tag">Sony</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/projector/" rel="tag">Projector</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/18/sony-loading-up-four-theatres-with-4k-sxrd-digital-cinema-system/">Sony loading up four theatres with 4K SXRD digital cinema systems</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 18 Oct 2007 19:25:00 EST. September 20th: know it home cinema buffs. That's the date Sony releases their <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/SXRD">SXRD</a> followup to the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/VPL-VW50">VPL-VW50</a> "Pearl" projector in Japan. The new Bravia VPL-VW60 projects a 1,920 x 1,080 image with a 35,000:1 contrast ratio and 1,000 lumens courtesy of its (&yen;42,000 / $367) 200W high pressure mercury lamp and trio of 0.61-inch SXRD chips. It's also quieter than its predecessor at 22dB while packing a pair of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/hdmi-cec">HDMI-CEC</a> class HDMI jacks supporting 1080/60p, 50p, and 24p. Best of all though, Sony managed to seriously up the specs while cutting the introductory list price nearly in half to "just" &yen;441,000 (about $3,858).<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sonys-bravia-vpl-vw60-the-sxrd-black-pearl-with-35-000-1-contrast-1/">Sony's Bravia VPL-VW60: the SXRD black pearl with 35,000:1 contrast</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sonys-bravia-vpl-vw60-the-sxrd-black-pearl-with-35-000-1-contrast-1/#361202"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2007/08/sonyvpl-vw601_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sonys-bravia-vpl-vw60-the-sxrd-black-pearl-with-35-000-1-contrast-1/#361203"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2007/08/sonyvpl-vw602_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sonys-bravia-vpl-vw60-the-sxrd-black-pearl-with-35-000-1-contrast-1/#361201"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2007/08/sonyvpl-vw603_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sonys-bravia-vpl-vw60-the-sxrd-black-pearl-with-35-000-1-contrast-1/#361204"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2007/08/sonyvpl-vw604_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sonys-bravia-vpl-vw60-the-sxrd-black-pearl-with-35-000-1-contrast-1/#361200"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2007/08/sonyvpl-vw605_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Via <a href="http://66.249.91.104/translate_c?&amp;u=http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/av/docs/20070821/sony.htm">Impress</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/industry/" rel="tag">Industry</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/displays/" rel="tag">Displays</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/sony/" rel="tag">Sony</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/projector/" rel="tag">Projector</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/21/sonys-bravia-vpl-vw60-the-sxrd-black-pearl-with-35-000-1-contr/">Sony's Bravia VPL-VW60: the SXRD black pearl with 35,000:1 contrast</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 21 Aug 2007 05:47:00 EST. May 1st is the date that Sony hopes will usher in the era of digital cinemas. That's the date their CineAlta 4K digital cinema solution goes on sale in Japan. With the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/10/25/sonys-18-000-lumen-srx-r220-projector-on-sale-early-2007/">SRX-R220</a> at its core, the 5-foot / 660-pound CineAlta 4K system projects a 4,096 x 2,160 pixel image at 18,000 lumens off its 4.2kW bulb. The 300GB films are stored in an encrypted JPEG2000 format within Sony's 19-inch, LMT-100 "media block" RAID array. Sony is counting on about 1/3 of Japan's 3,000 cinemas taking on their &yen;1.5 million ($12,651) per screen solution by 2010 with even higher hopes for the US market. They'll need lots of help since projection systems are just a tiny fraction of the total conversion costs required to move cinemas into the digital age. <br /><br />[Via <a href="http://66.249.93.104/translate_c?&amp;u=http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/av/docs/20070425/sony.htm">Impress</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/displays/" rel="tag">Displays</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/04/25/sonys-cinealta-4k-digital-cinema-solution-coming-may-1st/">Sony's CineAlta 4K digital cinema solution coming May 1st</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 25 Apr 2007 06:56:00 EST. Lead by its microdisplays and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/bravia">Bravia</a> LCDs, Sony continues its streak since 2003 of being number in TV dollar sales. After an up and down week, showing an <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/09/sonys-82-inch-1080p-bravia-lcd-prototype/">impressive LED backlit Bravia</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/09/oops-sony-declares-sixaxis-emmy-emmys-say-uh-uh/">(not) receiving an Emmy for the SIXAXIS</a> then today finding out the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/11/december-npd-hardware-sales-push-industry-to-new-heights/">Wii outsold the PlayStation 3</a>, hopefully this has raised Sony's spirits and we won't have to hear any more <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/12/12/sony-whines-over-hdtv-price-drops-says-its-looking-out-for-th/">whining about dropping prices</a>.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/sony/" rel="tag">Sony</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/lcd/" rel="tag">LCD</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/lcos/" rel="tag">LCoS</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/11/sony-leads-u-s-tv-sales-for-2006/">Sony leads U.S. TV sales for 2006</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 11 Jan 2007 22:24:00 EST. While the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2005/10/05/do-you-agree-with-these-hdtv-predictions/">battlefield</a> known as "the retail floor" is a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/09/11/5-reasons-hdtv-might-not-succeed/">tough place</a> for an HDTV to be, it looks like rear-projection televisions -- of all types -- took the gold medal for sales according to the latest research from Pacific Media Associates. Although plasma sets certainly had their own <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2005/08/18/plasma-hd-sales-overtake-rptvs-worldwide/">walk in the park</a>, RPTVs recovered from a weak performance this summer and surged "30 percent" in terms of units moved and revenue produced this past August. It was noted that buyers chose newer, more expensive 1080p-capable sets (particularly new units from <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/05/29/samsung-shows-off-hdtv-summer-line/">Samsung</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/06/01/sony-announces-five-1-080p-rear-projection-tvs/">Sony</a>) over the cheaper, more <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/06/30/sonys-a2000-series-1080p-sxrds-dated-prices-slashed/">antiquated</a> flavors, even though the average street price rose 0.5 percent. Samsung shareholders look mighty smart here as well, as the firm retained the top position in shares for both units and revenues, while Sony's mighty new 60-inch SXRD (the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/08/04/cnet-review-sonys-newest-1080p-60-inch-sxrd-kds-60a2000/">KDS-60A2000</a>) became the best selling individual set (as <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/01/25/is-sonys-sxrd-really-americas-favorite-hdtv/">confidently predicted</a>). It should be stated, however, that all this could change when hoards of crazed buyers bombard retailers in search of rock-bottom LCD prices in <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/11/09/black-friday-promises-deals-on-hdtvs-riots-likely/">just a few weeks</a>, but we'll let the big-backed units have their 15 minutes for now.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/industry/" rel="tag">Industry</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/displays/" rel="tag">Displays</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/samsung/" rel="tag">Samsung</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/sony/" rel="tag">Sony</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/11/10/rptv-sets-dominate-latest-american-hdtv-sales-figures/">RPTV sets dominate latest American HDTV sales figures</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 10 Nov 2006 08:10:00 EST. What's this, can it be, why yes... a bit of good news from Sony! Seems their 18,000 lumen SXRD projector is outta prototyping and going manufacture gold sometime "in early 2007." The new SRX-R220 model uses the same lens with same 4096 x 2160 resolution as Sony's existing <a href="http://displays.engadget.com/2005/06/30/theaters-go-digital-with-sonys-sxrd-4k-srx-r110ce/">SRX-R110 and SRX-R105</a> projectors but manages 18 freakin' thousand lumens off a single 4KW lamp. Look for 'em to join Sony's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/09/19/sonys-new-hvr-v1u-hdv-cam-does-24p/">24p cams</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/search/?q=xdcam">XDCAM</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/10/09/sony-rolls-out-hd-for-the-or/">HD optical disc system</a> under the CineAlta branding in the new year. Oh wait, there <em>is</em> a bit of bad news: these are destined for your neighborhood theater, not the home. Assuming of course, that someone (distributors, you listening?) can convince theater owners to drop the couple hundie grand required to alta-their-cinema for digital, eh?<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://64.233.179.104/translate_c?&amp;u=http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/av/docs/20061025/sony.htm">Impress</a>] <br /><br /><a href="http://news.sel.sony.com/en/press_room/b2b/broadcast_production/release/25974.html">Read</a> -- SRX-R220 <br /><a href="http://news.sel.sony.com/en/press_room/b2b/broadcast_production/release/25976.html">Read</a> -- CineAlta<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/industry/" rel="tag">Industry</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/displays/" rel="tag">Displays</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/sony/" rel="tag">Sony</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/projector/" rel="tag">Projector</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/10/25/sonys-18-000-lumen-srx-r220-projector-on-sale-early-2007/">Sony's 18,000 lumen SRX-R220 projector on sale early 2007</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 25 Oct 2006 09:23:00 EST. Sony took over an apartment building in Scotland for their latest Bravia ad, which touts the "color like no other" on Sony's Bravia line of LCDs. The ad will launch online at 8:35pm GMT on Tuesday (1:35pm PDT, 3:35pm CDT, 4:35pm EDT) and on television at 8:45pm.
