Hey, if you want to pay $650 for a phone <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/15/sony-ericsson-gets-official-with-idou-12-megapixel-mobile/">announced in February of last year</a>, don't let us stop you -- just don't get too close to the blinding light. Alternatively, you can use the same wormhole to travel to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/08/sony-ericsson-aino-and-satio-hitting-the-uk-on-october-7/">circa-October 2009 London</a> and buy a retail unit, then take another wormhole to December 2009 where you'll be <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/12/08/sony-ericsson-satio-back-on-sale-software-update-available/">offered some firmware to make it not suck</a>. The choice is yours.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/14/magnificent-wormhole-to-2009-spontaneously-opens-in-sony-style-s/">Magnificent wormhole to 2009 spontaneously opens in Sony Style store, expels Satio, closes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 14 Apr 2010 16:24:00 EST. On top of a promise that it'll "rectify some issues, [and] optimize performance even further," Sony Ericsson's high-end Symbian set gets WVGA video recording (though VGA remains the default), integrated picture uploads to Facebook and videos to YouTube, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/DLNA/">DLNA</a> support, sundry "UI improvements," and firmware integration of the Facebook app that's already available on <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/PlayNow/">PlayNow</a>. Not bad for a phone that Sony Ericsson could've easily abandoned in favor of support for the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Vivaz/">Vivaz</a> -- but probably not enough to totally shake the phone's tarnished rep this far into the game.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/05/sony-ericsson-promises-satio-software-update-just-around-the-co/">Sony Ericsson promises Satio software update 'just around the corner'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 05 Mar 2010 16:02:00 EST. Of course, there's also now a software update available for current Satio owners, but details on it are fairly light apart from word that it improves "handset speeds and battery usage" and that it "fixes previous software issues." What's more, while retail availability may be a bit hit and miss as things get back up to speed, it seems that at least Phones 4u in the UK is now already selling the updated version of the phone, and it's even reporting strong sales from over the weekend.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/12/08/sony-ericsson-satio-back-on-sale-software-update-available/">Sony Ericsson Satio back on sale, software update available</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 08 Dec 2009 16:22:00 EST. First up, as we've updated in our <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/26/sony-ericsson-acknowledges-touchscreen-issues-on-aino/">original post</a>, the Aino was never pulled from shelves -- we've been able to confirm this with Sony Ericsson spokespeople directly, which also satisfactorily explains why it was never pulled from the US SonyStyle site. Secondly, good news for Satio owners <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/24/sony-ericsson-satio-sales-suspended-after-bugs-discovered/">affected by the phone's issues</a>: there's a new firmware out there for unbranded units, which suggests that units that are already in the field might not need to be recalled despite Sony Ericsson's admission that the power-down problem can't be fixed over the air. For what it's worth, we've been in touch with Carphone Warehouse today and they haven't yet put it back on sale -- so it's hard to say just how closely related the new build is to the most damning problems facing the phone right now. Owners who've upgraded: what have you noticed so far?<br />

Adding insult to Sony Ericsson's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/18/sony-ericsson-closing-four-facilities-laying-off-2-000-employee/">injurious bottom line</a>, Carphone Warehouse and Phones 4U shops (the UK's largest mobile phone retailers) have halted sales of the SE's Symbian-powered <a href="http://mobile.engadget.com/tag/satio">Satio</a> handset after a high number of customer returns and complaints. A "software glitch" reportedly causes Sony Ericsson's flagship device to power down when users try to access certain applications -- unfortunately, the issue can't be patched via an over-the-air update. A little digging into CPW discussion forums reveals multiple complaints of freezes, crashes, under-performing batteries, and bizarre interface behavior. Both the Carphone Warehouse and Phones4U will offer "new phones" to customers fed up with their Satio. <a href="http://mobile.engadget.com/tag/richard%20dorman">Richard Dorman</a>, senior marketing manager at Sony Ericsson, concedes the issue and assures us that it should be sorted by Christmas. Until then, you can still purchase the handset directly from Vodafone, Orange and T-Mobile... but really, why would you? The Satio's not the only dubiously-spec'd <a href="http://mobile.engadget.com/tag/12megapixel">12 megapixel cameraphone</a> on the market.<br />

It's not like we didn't <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/28/sony-ericsson-satio-is-idous-final-name-ships-in-october/">know this already</a>, but Sony Ericsson has now officially confirmed an October UK release for its latest pair of handsets. Well well, it looks like the mythical <a href="http://engadget.com/tag/satio">Sony Ericsson Satio</a> is soon to go from <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/10/bring-popcorn-youserbase-reviews-sony-ericcsons-satio-and-aino/">beautiful fever-dream</a> to actual reality -- it's popped into the FCC database with test results on GSM 850 and 1900, otherwise known as EDGE. Yeah, that sort of sucks, but we're still holding out hope, since we don't know the full story -- it could be destined for a lame existence on AT&amp;T, it could be sold unlocked, or it could be a Canadian or Latin American model. Seriously, though -- it's the Satio, and the <em>government has one</em>. Sony Ericsson has been teasing us with its hottest for some months now, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/satio">Satio</a> (nee <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/idou">Idou</a>) and the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/aino">Aino</a>, two media-heavy smartphones that are inching closer to international release. They still aren't confirmed for American shores, but until then we can enjoy a series of lengthy videos covering the two courtesy of <em>Youserbase</em>. How lengthy? We're talking almost 75 minutes of discussion and tentative fingering over nine parts, showing off nearly every nook and cranny of the phones' (decidedly dark) user interfaces. While there aren't any huge surprises here, the vids give good feel for the responsive performance of the UI -- and of the occasionally not-so-responsive integrated browsers. We've included just the first two installments here after the break, but if you don't have anything planned this morning feel free to click on through for the epic and sweeping series.<br />

Folks are already starting to get a look at production versions (well, closer to production than at <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/tag/mwc">MWC</a>, anyhow) of the Sony Ericsson Satio and its baby sister, the Aino -- and even if you're not a fan of the joint venture's wares, it's hard not to appreciate what it's brought to the table here. The Satio looks identical to its <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/tag/idou">Idou</a> doppelganger -- albeit now in three colors instead of two -- but the real news here is inside, where we're finally getting a look at Sony Ericsson's interpretation of Symbian^1 with a unique UI. Overall, it's looking "chunky" (and we mean that in a good way) with an entirely finger-friendly presentation -- a sharp, healthy departure from the <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/tag/uiq">UIQ</a> platform that it just threw in the dumpster a few months back.<br /><br />Though the Satio's higher end, it's actually the Aino that intrigues us more; in a way, this is the closest thing to a <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/tag/pspphone">"PSP phone"</a> that Sony Ericsson has ever produced, largely on account of its support for Sony <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/remoteplay">Remote Play</a> which funnels PlayStation 3-stored media content down over WiFi or your cellular connection. Sadly though, "media content" doesn't include games; Sony Ericsson is billing the phone strictly as a multimedia-heavy non-gaming phone, so calling it a PSP phone in practice would be a huge frickin' misnomer. The phone includes a dock that syncs media wirelessly to your PC when connected -- hot -- and from a distance, it seems to be just about the sexiest phone Sony Ericsson's ever made. It's not clear what carriers will be offering either of these, but as usual, we've got to bet against the North Americans.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.electricpig.co.uk/2009/05/28/sony-ericsson-satio-hands-on-photo-overload/sony-ericsson-satio-hands-on-0/">Read</a> - Satio hands-on<br /><a href="http://www.electricpig.co.uk/2009/05/28/sony-ericsson-aino-unveiled-taps-into-ps3-remotely/">Read</a> - Aino hands-on<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cellphones/" rel="tag">Cellphones</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handhelds/" rel="tag">Handhelds</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/28/sony-ericssons-saito-and-aino-get-handled-remote-play-makes-th/">Sony Ericsson's Satio and Aino get handled, Remote Play makes the Aino PSP-like -- minus the games</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 28 May 2009 17:58:00 EST. It's been announced today that the Symbian-powered <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/tag/Idou/">Idou</a> unveiled at Mobile World Congress earlier this year will be coming to market as the "Satio." The full 640 x 350 3.5-inch touchscreen device features a whopping 12.1 megapixel camera, dual-band HSPA, microSD expansion (yes, microSD, not Memory Stick Micro), and a xenon flash. It'll be available in three colors -- black, silver, and bordeaux -- this October.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://semcblog.com/2009/05/28/sony-ericsson-satio-an-entertainment-unlimited-device/">SEMC Blog</a>]<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-ericsson-satio/">Sony Ericsson Satio</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-ericsson-satio/#2040808"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/05/se-satia-pr-001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-ericsson-satio/#2040807"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/05/se-satia-pr-002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-ericsson-satio/#2040806"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/05/se-satia-pr-003_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-ericsson-satio/#2040805"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/05/se-satia-pr-004_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-ericsson-satio/#2040809"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/05/se-satia-pr-005_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cellphones/" rel="tag">Cellphones</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handhelds/" rel="tag">Handhelds</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/28/sony-ericsson-satio-is-idous-final-name-ships-in-october/">Sony Ericsson Satio is Idou's final name, ships in October</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 28 May 2009 16:10:00 EST. It'll be available in three colors -- black, silver, and bordeaux -- this October.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://semcblog.com/2009/05/28/sony-ericsson-satio-an-entertainment-unlimited-device/">SEMC Blog</a>]<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-ericsson-satio/">Sony Ericsson Satio</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-ericsson-satio/#2040808"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/05/se-satia-pr-001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-ericsson-satio/#2040807"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/05/se-satia-pr-002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-ericsson-satio/#2040806"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/05/se-satia-pr-003_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-ericsson-satio/#2040805"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/05/se-satia-pr-004_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-ericsson-satio/#2040809"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/05/se-satia-pr-005_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/sony-ericsson/" rel="tag">Sony Ericsson</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/symbian/" rel="tag">Symbian</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gsm/" rel="tag">GSM</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/edge/" rel="tag">EDGE</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hsdpa/" rel="tag">HSDPA</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/umts/" rel="tag">UMTS</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hsupa-1/" rel="tag">HSUPA</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/28/sony-ericsson-satio-is-idous-final-name-ships-in-october/">Sony Ericsson Satio is Idou's final name, ships in October</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 28 May 2009 14:48:00 EST.
