  • Apple Pro covers SNL Season 1 and Broadway Video

Apple's Pro ezine has posted a nice piece by Joe Cellini on the production of Saturday Night Live: The Complete First Season (available on DVD and in iTS) by Broadway Video. The definitive DVD set includes the original 24 "Not Ready For Prime Time Players" episodes from way back in 1975. Why the long delay? Music clearances, which took a full 32 years to finish, leaving BV only six weeks to complete the DVD set in time for the holiday buying season.Enter XSan. In the process of converting to high-def production, the SNL team built out a ginormous XServe RAID storage network, including a complete 30-year archive of all the standard-def shows stored in 10-bit uncompressed format. Gosh, that's... (quick calculation in AJA Data Rate) about 150 GB per 90-minute show, 30 seasons of 24 shows each: over 100 terabytes of funny, not even counting the HD shows from the past two seasons. With the first season already digitized, the DVD production was dramatically faster than it would have been otherwise, and according to BV, they "did the entire process using Macs running Final Cut Pro, Shake, Final Touch, and DVD Studio Pro, all SAN-based." Cheeseburger cheeseburger!

"Steve Jobs" appeared on Saturday Night Live last night to talk about the iPhone and it's even better than we thought. Apparently it holds 2 billion, with a 'b,' songs! And it even has an on/off button and a clock! Oh, yeah, and don't forget to download The Office in iTunes. Thanks Travis!

It's always nice to see Apple parodies, especially when they: a) have nothing to do with an existing product, or specifically: the iPod, and b) are from the mid-90's. This is a decent SNL spoof that quickly rose up the digg ranks yesterday evening, parodying a fictitious Apple product that's a bit too much disposable overkill for its own good. Enjoy.[via digg]

  • SNL writers distracted by the PSP

Saturday Night Live cast member Jason Sudekis recently had a chat with Yahoo! about video games on the set of the show. Surprisingly, the PSP handheld seems to be the system for the writers and staff of the show. "They all have PSPs there running around Liberty City Stories or playing 18 holes on Hot Shots Golf. Now that PSP is out everyone can play the same game in the same room and you don't have to have a TV."It appears that his favorite games on the handheld come mostly from Sony's excellent launch with the system: Burnout Legends, Twisted Metal Head-On, and Hot Shot Golf. His top game on the PSP is Lumines (great choice, my man!).Those of you that are interested in joining the SNL cast one day better start getting your PSPs revved up.

  • Apple: The power to crush the other kids

Saturday Night Live has had some fun at Apple's expense over the years. From Nick Burns (MOVE!!) to Steve Jobs appearing on Weekend Update with Tina, they've all been pretty good. My all time favorite, however, is "McIntosh Jr." Young Zach wows his classmates with the killer project he made for Miss Hanson on his "McIntosh." It's very funny, and MacTV has got it ready for download. Check it out...and crush the other kids.

What we're watching: I criticized golf for being SD-only recently, now that they have joined us in high definition I'm obligated to watch. Minority Report's impressive special effects should make it a great watch in HD at 8 p.m. on ABC, hopefully we'll be able to buy it on disc someday and watch it in HD whenever we want.Depending on your perspective, SNL could go either way on quality tonight, as Antonio Banderas fills in the guest host spot vacated by last week's Scarlett Johanssen. Our traditional high-def listings continue below

What we're watching: Final Four time, and still George Mason's run continues. Can they get to the final game? We'll find out tonight at 6 on CBS. If you can possibly tear yourself away from some of the best hoops action in history, Jeremy Piven's Journey of a Lifetime seems very interesting as the Entourage star takes a trip through India, first of a two parter and debuting tonight on Discovery-HD.After our April Fools joke earlier, we'll be perfectly honest, we are watching the Saturday Night Live repeat in high definition tonight because Scarlett Johansson is incredibly hot. Hey, the Steve Jobs skit that recently aired on SNL is finally funny! The all-new, ultra tiny iPod Invisa is for sale on Ebay. It measures 0.000000mm x 0.000000mm x 0.000000mm, weighs 0.000000oz (shipping weight 0.000001 oz), holds 8 million songs as well as every photo ever taken! Here it is pictured next to an iPod mini. The funny part is that the auction is up to $50US (at the time of this posting) across 12 bids. It was a skit, people. If you're that eager to give up fifty bucks, I'll take it.
