  • Owners report Mad Catz SFIV FightStick defects

Just in time for the impending release of Street Fighter IV, owners of the standard MadCatz FightStick are reporting several problems with the peripheral. Reported on the Shoryuken.com forums (which seem to be overloaded as of press time), the various problems include the joystick itself sticking in certain positions and sticky buttons. Other users are reporting that the controller may fail to register certain directions on the stick or certain button presses, with at least one user reporting that the stick stopped registering all inputs entirely. Certain users have attributed the stuck joystick inputs to a metal washer that actually grinds away at the inner workings of the stick while in use.In a statement to Joystiq, Mad Catz Global PR & Communications Manager, Alex Verrey, said, "There are no major problems with the Street Fighter range of products. Customers can buy with complete confidence.""As with all complex precision-engineered products, there is always a chance that a tiny percentage of product may exhibit a fault," said Verrey, adding, "This is TOTALLY normal and not at all unexpected. Usually this is due to circumstances beyond our control but this does NOT mean that there is any kind of inherent fault with the design or manufacture of the product." Verrey advises all customers who have encountered a problem to contact Mad Catz directly for a repair (visit this link for Mad Catz warranty information). For those that already have a standard FightStick, have you experienced similar problems?

We hope you've all been tightening up your Hadoukens and hitting the ceiling with your Flash Kicks, because when Street Fighter IV releases in the U.S. on February 17, you're going to need to bring your best moves. Capcom has dropped word that the fun begins before the game even releases, as the Street Fighter IV launch party is open to the public. At this launch party, producer Yoshinori Ono will be available for autographs, and Capcom has even enlisted the aid of performers DJ QBert, Supreme Soul, and The Knux, if live music is your kind of thing. There will even be customized sketching by Udon artists, and, of course, a chance of winning copies of Street Fighter IV.If you live near the Los Angeles area, then head past the break for full details on the event.

Anticipating the release of Street Fighter IV and a horrifying new film (Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li), 1UP has compiled some of the best scenes from Street Fighter: The Movie, one of our generation's best unintentional comedies of all time.Pieced together from choice sequences of the 1994 debacle, the feature showcases some of the cheesy one-liners, awkwardly choreographed fight scenes and cringe-worthy fan service moments that make Street Fighter: The Movie one of the best -- and ironic -- films you must own. Seriously, the Blu-Ray version was released this week.

Are you 'that guy' at the arcade? The guy calmly defeating challenger after challenger on the gray market Street Fighter IV cabinet, milking your dollar bill for all it's worth? You know, the guy stealing all our money? Well how would you feel if we told you that Capcom is partnering up with GameStop and the EVO Championship Series to bring you the very first Street Fighter IV National Tournament? Your head would explode?! Uh oh, maybe we should have kept this to ourselves...Anyway, starting on February 21st at "locations EVERYWHERE" (warning: PDF link), GameStop will hold the first of three rounds determining the best of the best SFIV players in the country. Following that, the second round will take place on February 28th at "regional stores" and second-round victors will move on to the semi-finals on March 14th. Finally, the 16 winners of the semi-finals will be flown to San Francisco for the final competition, where they'll all receive the upcoming SFIV Mad Catz arcade sticks and fighting pads, limited edition tournament belts and a place in the semi-final bracket at the EVO World Finals in Las Vegas. But what, pray tell, does the winner of the final round get? How about an official Street Fighter IV arcade cabinet? If you haven't already burst out the door and run to a GameStop to sign up, you may want to do so posthaste.

Putting their artistic talents to use, NeoGAF members have been hard at work creating fan-made Street Fighter IV magazine-style ads. Y'know, just in case Prince Capcom decides to swing by the forums and sweep one off its digital feet and into the magazines. Most (if not all) of the ad mock-ups are professionally crafted, with our favorites coming from the "What Are You Fighting IV?" series. You can view all the ads, including the not-so-good attempts, over on the GAF forums.

We love Street Fighter as much as the last guy who grew up in the age of the arcade, so we know a lack of balance when we see it. That said, Street Fighter IV's achievements are not for the faint of heart. Starting off as simple as winning your first ranked match, they also include defeating Master Gouken as you clear the arcade mode's hardest difficulty setting. Those brave enough to go after all 47 achievements -- most of which are more time consuming than actually difficult -- can check after the break for the full list. Oh, and if we see you online, don't just sit there doing the Hundred Hand Slap. Sure, it's a legitimate technique... but so is strangling you with our controller cables. Just kidding! Our controllers are wireless.

Those who are in the market for a new controller -- or are just feeling an overwhelming surge of Street Fighter IV excitement that only spending money can satisfy -- should hit up the Capcom Store. Just make sure your pop-up blocker is turned off.Once the coupon code is applied, you can grab any flavor of the new SFIV FightPads or even a too-cool T-Shirt. Sadly, the highly coveted FightSticks are sold out. Note too that you'll also have to account for shipping charges.[Via Cheap Ass Gamer]

Okay, okay. We know that Street Fighter has always had a plot. We don't want any angry otaku in here. But seriously, for a game about efficiently beating the snot out of people, the plot of Street Fighter IV is heavy. The latest trailer for the game highlights the story and gives a little background as to why everyone keeps on fighting in the street. Whether or not you spend any time reflecting on it whilst pounding your opponent, well, that's up to you. We've embedded the trailer after the break. Here's a fun exercise. Close your eyes, listen to the trailer and imagine a Street Fighter movie that's actually good. At the rate things are going, it's the closest you're going to get.

Capcom, we need to talk -- or rather, you need to talk less. You see, we were watching the new Street Fighter IV trailer and, beautiful though it may be, we had to mute it halfway through. The video, which highlights each of the game's characters, has some pretty cornball material -- we're talking laughing at, not laughing with.... Then again, once we get our hands on the game, we'll probably be too enthralled to notice. SFIV is set to punch you in the face on February 17.

Ladies and gentlemen, girls and boys, Maxim has dropped knowledge upon us. Read this, know this, feel it in your bones: 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand has been scored higher than both Killzone 2 and Street Fighter IV. This comes as GameTrailers member G00se has posted scans of the latest issue, in which 50 Cent is given a 4/5, Killzone 2 a 3.5/5 and Street Fighter IV a 3/5. Maxim calls 50 Cent "a wanksta proof gem," noting its new Fiddy songs, co-op play and "a story that is Indiana Jones meets Scarface." Killzone 2 -- which the magazine refers to as Kill Zone 2 -- is labeled "the hottest girl at the ball, if not quite the best dancer." And SFIV? Maxim notes that "it takes the series to 3D" -- even though that actually happened ages ago -- but "loses a fistful of its old-school soul."We can't think of any possible way to expand upon this. No, really, that's all we got.[Via PS3 Fanboy]

There's something simultaneously marvelous and terrifying about Ultra moves in Street Fighter IV. It's a feeling that's been with the series for a long time now, actually. You see, it's marvelous for the person utilizing the Ultra move, but terrifying for the one on the receiving end (at least if he's not prepared for it). Think about it. What isn't marvelous / terrifying about seeing that life bar instantly drop by half (or more)? Obviously understanding our desire / fear to see tons of the Ultra moves performed in one video, Gametrailers has created a montage of them. It's like they can read minds over there! Now you can check out most of the Ultra moves -- from a safe distance -- without putting your life bar on the line. Check out the video after the break.

  • Mad Catz struggles to meet demand for SFIV arcade stick

Speaking with Joystiq in response to an article on Eurogamer, Mad Catz PR lead, Alex Verrey, spoke candidly about the overwhelming demand and supply issue for the $150 Street Fighter IV FightStick. According to Verrey, Mad Catz originally limited the run of arcade controllers to 3,000 units but have received "many, many times that amount" in pre-orders, which caught the accessory developer off-guard.The sticks are currently going back into production but development could take some time, so those who recently pre-ordered it will probably not have a FightStick day-and-date with Street Fighter IV. Mad Catz wouldn't share region allocation numbers with Joystiq but did say the company has every intention to meet pre-order demand. As for the other controllers, you should be fine picking one up without much hassle. Gallery: Mad Catz Street Fighter IV controllers

Speaking with Eurogamer earlier today, peripheral manufacturer Mad Catz revealed a struggle to meet UK demand for the Street Fighter IV FightStick: Tournament Edition (pictured). Considering the UK is "over there" and we're, well, over here, we wanted to see the situation report for North America. We spoke with the company's PR head, Alex Verrey, who was surprisingly candid about the situation. The issue is that the initial production run of the $150 Tournament stick consisted of 3,000 units. The company's pre-order count is now "many, many, times that amount," which Verrey admits caught the manufacturer by surprise. The sticks are currently going back into production, but it will take a little time for turnaround. Naturally, more units were allotted for North America than Europe, but he couldn't get into numbers. Although many who order now may not get the stick day and date with SF IV's release, we were informed the company intends to make sure that pre-order demand is met.As for the other official Street Fighter IV controllers, Verrey believes that there should be adequate supply. Another topic we discussed at length was the quality of Mad Catz products, and he asked that consumers don't think of this Mad Catz as the same one they remember. He emphasized the new Mad Catz has evolved and is focusing more on quality. He reiterated that its wares come with a two-year warranty and they are committed to better products. We've placed pricing details for the SF IV controllers after the break. %Gallery-40901%

click to see this bad boy in hi-res Mad Catz has announced a new line of controllers and accessories designed especially with Street Fighter fans in mind. First up, the company has the FightPad, which features an arcade style six button layout and (blessedly) a floating eight-way D-pad. For more serious fighting fanatics, there is the FightStick an arcade style joystick with an eight button layout. For really serious fighting fans, there's the FightStick Tournament, which features authentic Sanwa parts. In fact, it uses the same parts found in actual Street Fighter IV arcade cabinets. As if that weren't enough, the design of the FightStick Tournament is being overseen by SFIV producer Yoshinori Ono himself. Also on offer will be a Street Fighter IV faceplate, wall scroll, and (ahem) Console Skinz. All the Street Fighter IV Mad Catz products are scheduled to ship alongside the release of the game in February. No prices have been announced yet, which means we can still dream that the FightStick Tournament will be offered for the low, low price of free. Find a gallery of the new controllers below. Community managers for Microsoft and Sony are finally taking it to the street, Street Fighter IV that is. According to Kotaku, this year's Consumer Electronics Show will host a large-scale tournament for the anticipated fighter that pits Microsoft, Sony and Capcom reps against each other. Three 20-person teams, captained by Microsoft's Larry Hryb (aka Major Nelson), Sony's Jeff Rubenstein, and Capcom's Seth Killian, will throw down during the January 2009 trade show in search of gaming fame's best.Console grudge match or clever marketing scheme? Regardless, this will be one of the few times Microsoft and Sony reps will be able to hit each other legally. We don't want to call a winner yet, but we can't wait to see the Vegas odds on this one. Microsoft and Sony going up against Capcom in Street Fighter IV? Yeah, good luck with that.

Yesterday, Capcom unveiled some changes made to the Collector's Edition retail packaging of Street Fighter IV. Originally featuring Chun-Li at the ready for a brawl, Capcom had a total change of heart regarding the cover art thanks to fan feedback. "We had a total re-think on our SFIV packaging," Capcom's PR director, Chris Kramer, wrote on the Capcom-Unity blog. "We have opted to drop the initial Chun-Li packfront in favor of Street Fighter IV art director Ikeno-san's amazing Ryu vs. Ken illustration." Priced at $79.99, Street Fighter enthusiasts can expect to enjoy a soundtrack CD, hint book with Udon art and a C. Viper figurine -- but we're still hoping they come to their senses and swap that for Akuma or Ken. Not content with leaving Xbox 360 fanboys out in the standard definition dust, Capcom has confirmed the final piece of collector's swag -- a new 65-minute anime movie, The Ties That Bind -- has been encoded on a special game disc (not a standard DVD) which has allowed creators at Studio 4C to output the film at a native 720p resolution. Finally, Capcom says the collector's edition will also include some "secret additional downloadable content," which GameStop had previously listed as new costumes, but has since revised.[via Joystiq] Gallery: Street Fighter IV

We've got good news and bad news. The good news is that the collector's edition of Street Fighter IV (announced last week) is headed to the United States after all. The collector's edition -- with the hefty price of $79.99 -- is now listed on GameStop.com. The bad news: The 360 and PS3 versions of the CE are getting different goodies. While both versions will include a soundtrack CD, strategy guide, costume DLC and a bonus disc with the Street Fighter anime movie, each will include a different Street Fighter figurine. Xbox 360 collector's edition buyers will get a Crimson Viper figurine, while PS3 buyers get a Ryu figurine. Call us suckers for nostalgia, but we'd rather have Ryu. At least we can pretend to be Ryu though, as GameStop is offering a free Ryu headband for pre-ordering either version.
