  • Sega Ultimate Genesis Collection bringing official Genesis emulation to iPhone, pain to your wallet

After packaging and re-marketing to us our childhood over Nintendo's Wii Virtual Console and in a multitude of other forms, Sega is putting another platform to good use in its eternal quest to make us poor: the iPhone. Due for the App Store next month, the upcoming Sega Ultimate Genesis Collection will bring together some of Sega's existing, disparate releases for the iPhone under one roof and add a bunch more, allowing users to buy Sega Genesis games directly from the app. The first one's free, of course (Space Harrier II), but after that you'll be paying a decent amount for your emulation fix: Sonic is $6, Golden Axe is $5, and Ecco the Dolphin and Shining Force go for $3. The variety will undoubtedly grow over time, but we would hope that at some point Sega will offer some sort of discounted megabundle, since you can currently get 49 notable Sega titles for around $20 in the form of Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection for the Xbox 360 and PS3. Basically: we're not sure if this is all supposed to make us worse or better about jailbreaking.

  • Shining Force devs creating new DS RPG Steal Princess

Like twins who look alike but follow entirely different circles, Japan-based Climax Entertainment and UK-headquartered Climax must get sick and tired of people getting them confused and mistaking one for the other, with the former best known for creating the Shining Force series of RPGs, while the highlight of the latter's portfolio is what, Sudeki? While we assume that Climax continues to work towards this November's release of Silent Hill Origins, 1UP has revealed that Climax Entertainment is revisiting familiar territory by creating an original role-playing game called Steal Princess for the Nintendo DS. Set for release in Japan sometime next year, information on the new game is scarce save for that it will be an isometric RPG starring a girl named Anis (aka the "Steal Princess") and her magic-wielding fairy Kukuri, and true to the game's namesake this dynamic duo will steal back treasures that were themselves previously stolen by the ominously named Devil King. No plans have yet been announced to release the game outside Japan, of course, though as it stands we're on the fence as to how we feel about Steal Princess already. We know Climax Entertainment can create good stuff, as evidenced by both Shining Force and Landstalker. Then again, they also gave us such forgettable escapades as Time Stalkers and Dark Savior, prompting us to follow the old adage of 'one bitten, twice shy.'

var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/nintendo_wii/Top_20_Most_Popular_Virtual_Console_Titles'; One of the most interesting new features of the newly-updated Wii firmware is the ability to see a list of popular Virtual Console games for your region. Now that there's a decent number of Virtual Console games, we can imagine having a hard time making a selection. Siliconera's Spencer Yip has provided both the Japanese top 20 (left) and the US top 20 (right) for comparison. We don't know exactly how the popularity of these games is determined. As Spencer mused, "It's not clear if these games are popular because they are the top selling Virtual Console games, most browsed games this month or most loved by the Nintendo staff (unlikely!)" What is clear is that the list is frequently updated. We found that some of the games had shifted around from their positions on Siliconera's list. Star Fox 64 and Shining Force, for example, swapped places, and Wave Race 64 and Zelda II have replaced Kirby's Dream Course and Excitebike. We couldn't be more excited about daily Virtual Console charts! Even if they show a disappointing lack of Devil's Crush on both sides.

As if last week wasn't enough pain and suffering, this week has just doubled it. Multiple times did we upload the file to YouTube, in its native AVI state, only to have a file with sound, yet no video, returned to us. Then, we decided to convert the file from AVI to WMV, but, again, we only got back a file of sound, no video. And, as we sat defeated and drained, none other than new recruit Mike Sylvester walked in and showed us how to fix it. Without him, we are lost. So, everyone thank Mike for making this week's video possible and be sure to head past the post break for the usual.

No new multiplayer games on Japan's Virtual Console this week. It's a perfect week to sit in your apartment alone all day playing role-playing games. Now, if only that apartment didn't have to be located in Japan for us to take advantage.Normally, when an RPG shows up on the Virtual Console, it's big news. This week, Japan gets three, one of which is very big news indeed as the confluence of a good N64 game, an RPG, and a Mario game. Makai Hakkenden SHADA (PC Engine, 1 player, 600 Wii Points) Shining Force (Mega Drive, 1 player, 700 Wii Points) Militia (Super Famicom, 1 player, 800 Wii Points) Mario Story (Nintendo 64, 1 player, 1000 Wii Points)

Korea gets the DS Lite today, while Japan just gets a couple of excellent new DS games. Where's the justice in that? We've already been lured by Wario the Seven's new Japanese TV ads and, of course, by its utterly stupid name. Now it's time to burn our Yen in the name of big moustaches. We'll also be lighting our notes for these newcomers/latecomers: Gears of War (we heard something about this game being "popular" in America; Xbox 360) Excite Truck (better late than never; Wii) Sekaiju no Meikyuu (Atlus' woody good RPG; DS) Shining Force Ikusa (no need to take turns; PS2)
