Spelunky and its numbered sequel are headed to the Nintendo Switch next summer. The original will have local multiplayer, while Spelunky 2 will support both local and online play. The ‘original’ Spelunky launched on the Xbox 360 back in 2012.

Many years ago, a little game called Spelunky graced the Xbox 360. The upgraded version was an immediate hit, though, and later ported to the PlayStation 3, PS Vita (my personal favorite way to play) PC and PlayStation 4. A sequel was announced in 2017 and given a tentative “2019” release date the following year.

The Indiana Jones-styled roguelike Spelunky is a modern classic indie game that's been around for the better part of a decade in various releases across multiple platforms and console generations. We knew a sequel was coming, but had no idea when. Out of nowhere, developers Mossmouth and Blitworks have dropped a trailer and revealed the game is coming sometime next year.

Spelunky 2 exists! And, really that's about all we know aside from the game potentially taking place in the sky, and you playing as the unnamed original protagonist's daughter a la (spoiler warning) Uncharted 4. Check out the trailer below and see if you can unravel any other clues. The first game was available on practically every platform, and was a driving force behind taking the roguelike subgenre as close to mainstream as it'll probably get.

Good news if you and yours have long worn out Sportsfriends' appeal -- it's been a few years, so that's understandable -- and you're hankering for another collection of unique multiplayer games. Next year, the minds behind Spelunky, Downwell, Time Barons, Skorpulac and Madhouse have teamed to bring you UFO 50. "Our goal is to combine a familiar 8-bit aesthetic with new ideas and modern game design sensibilities," the game's website reads. That purview includes platformers, puzzle games, RPGs and shooters, for a total of, you guessed it, 50 different games.

  • 'For the King' is a hard, cute co-op game that needs your help

At first blush, it's easy to dismiss a game based on its marketing bullet points: persistent choices; rougelike, online co-op. But sometimes it takes actually seeing it in motion for the cynicism to fall away. That's what happened to me with For the King, a gorgeous little game that hit Kickstarter recently and was almost entirely funded ($26,739 of a needed $30,210 as of this writing) in its first day. Roguelikes by definition are typically solo affairs, but For the King supports three-player online co-op and the developer promises the game's "unforgiving" in nature. So, expect a lot of death once the procedurally generated game launches next June.

What happens when you introduce your child to classic consoles at an early age? You end up breeding a superpowered Wunderkind who can complete one of the most difficult games of any gaming generation. In this recent feature, writer and XOXO conference founder Andy Baio details his fatherly quest to introduce his son Eliot to classic gaming consoles chronologically, as part of an accelerated history lesson started on his fourth birthday. The plan kicked off with father and son tag-teaming every entry in the NES Mega Man series, and the pair later moved on to conquering Super Mario World and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. By the time he turned seven, Eliot had collected all 120 stars in Super Mario 64. Eliot then beat Mossmouth's infamously difficult roguelike platformer Spelunky at the age of eight. Earlier this year, he completed Spelunky's Hell level on his own -- a feat that eludes many gaming veterans with decades of experience. Eliot's recent favorites include Vlambeer's Nuclear Throne and, of course, Minecraft. "You're probably either thinking I'm a monster or a pretty awesome dad. Maybe a little of both," Baio concludes. "That's okay with me. My son is amazing, he loves video games, and more than anything, he loves playing them with me." [Image: Andy Baio, Eliot Baio]

Heads up, would-be explorers: today is your last chance to pick up a free PlayStation Plus copy of Mossmouth's roguelike platformer Spelunky for the PlayStation 4, PS3, and Vita before it returns to full price tomorrow. The rest of October's freebies also expire tomorrow, making today your final opportunity to grab Batman: Arkham Asylum, Rainbow Moon, Dust: An Elysian Tail, and Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara. Make sure to check out Pix the Cat on the PS4 and Vita, too -- it's an oddly compelling mixture of Snake and Pac-Man Championship Edition, and it's the one game I've played the most out of last month's PS Plus additions. November's featured games, including The Binding of Isaac Rebirth and SteamWorld Dig, will be available to PlayStation Plus subscribers when the PlayStation Store updates tomorrow. The second season of Boss Fight Books will feature in-depth analyses of Metal Gear Solid, Baldur's Gate 2, and other landmark games, independent publisher Gabe Durham announced this week. Boss Fight Books: Season 2 is a collection of six books that each exhaustively cover a single game, with developer interviews and other supplementary material accompanying author insight. Announced works include Spelunky by designer Derek Yu, Baldur's Gate 2 by author Matt Bell, Bible Adventures by Gabe Durham, World of Warcraft by Daniel Lisi, and Metal Gear Solid by Hey Ash, Whatcha Playin'? creators Ashly and Anthony Burch. The subject of a sixth book will be picked from nominations suggested by Kickstarter backers. Originally pitched as "the 33 1/3 of video games," Boss Fight Books launched last year with a series of six volumes covering Galaga, Jagged Alliance 2, and other titles at length. Actor Ken Baumann penned the first entry in the series, offering a personal look at Nintendo's widely praised SNES RPG Earthbound. Boss Fight Books: Season 2 has already surpassed its Kickstarter funding goal. Books will begin shipping out to backers in May, 2015. [Image: Boss FIght Books]

Spelunky has once again been mastered, with a new world record speedrun set over the weekend. YouTube user Pibonacci waltzed through the devious action game with a final time of 1:55:343. The previously established world record for any percentage game completion was clocked at two minutes and one second, Eurogamer reports. "What a day for Germany, I guess," Pibonacci said after passing through the game's final door, in a run that occurred soon after his homeland took home the FIFA World Cup. The German YouTuber's phenomenal run was due in part to a few lucky breaks, including the good fortune to nab a few key items early in his run. His masterful use of the deadly teleporter, which when misused can lead to immediate death, was integral to his quick finish. You can watch Pibonacci's outstanding feat after the break. • Original Spelunky gets online co-op mod

Before Spelunky became a household name on XBLA in July 2012, it arrived on PC in late 2008 in its original low-res state. Source code for the original game was made available one year later, and just now received a new mod called Spelunky SD courtesy of Ukrainian developer Vadim. The mod adds, among other things, online cooperative multiplayer to the first version of the game. In what started as a weekend project, the developer spent three months fine-tuning the mod for its first public release late last week. He tweaked the original game in a few ways, adding elements such as "sounds fading off-screen" or making enemies blink when they're about to get up off the ground. Vadim fixed a few bugs as well and made input precision "slightly more forgiving" in the game. The Spelunky SD mod is available to download through GameJolt. [Image: Mossmouth]

Escape Goat 2, Ironclad Tactics, Nidhogg, Skulls of the Shogun: Bone-a-Fide Edition, Apotheon and Starwhal: Just the Tip, Chasm, Jamestown Plus, Source, Drifter and Spelunky are all making the jump from PC to the PS4. No specific timeline for each release was revealed, but the laundry list of titles gives us plenty to look forward to. Sony's "Third Party Production" team will help bring a select number of the new titles to the PlayStation 4. The group had previously worked to bring Towerfall to the platform. Brace yourselves -- it's time for Midweek Madness at Steam, and developers Telltale Games and Mossmouth are thrust into the spotlight for a limited-time round of steep discounts. The complete season of Telltale Games' The Wolf Among Us is available for $14.99 through April 11 -- a discount of 40 percent. If you'd prefer something more demanding of your reflexes, Mossmouth's roguelike platformer Spelunky is more than capable of doling out punishment in the form of extreme randomly generated difficulty. Spelunky is priced at $5.09 through Friday at 10 a.m. Pacific Time. [Image: Telltale Games]

  • 'Ultimate space anime fantasy' Galak-Z plots course for a Vita near you

Galak-Z, a top-down shooter from Skulls of the Shogun developer 17-BIT, is now coming to the Vita handheld. At PAX 2013, Dave took Galak-Z for a test drive through the cosmos and described the game as "like a sped-up version of Asteroids on psychedelic drugs." He praised the game's tight controls, sharp enemy AI and the omnipresent threat of something unexpected blowing your tiny ship into component bits before you're even aware of that stray laser blast or grumpy space worm. That last bit makes a lot of sense in light of a recent PlayStation.blog entry from Galak-Z producer Raj Joshi who names delightfully infuriating indie hits Don't Starve and Spelunky as key inspirations for the shooter. Alongside the newly-announced Vita version of Galak-Z, 17-BIT remains committed to launching the game on both PlayStation 4 and PC platforms. Unfortunately, the most concrete release window Joshi is willing to assign Galak-Z is sometime "later this year." [Image: 17-BIT]

On February 21, Twitch user Bananasaurus_Rex (the gaming community really does have the best handles) set a new high-score record in developer Mossmouth's much-loved roguelike, Spelunky. The history-making run took seven and a half hours to complete, with a final tally of $3,105,850. Bananasaurus is known in the Spelunky community for being the first recorded player to beat the game's final boss using an eggplant in single-player mode, as well as being the first recorded player to have killed the game's ghost monster. • Spelunky 1.4 update drops in a new HUD, save backup, more

    02.10.2014

Indie developer Mossmouth has released a sizable update for the Steam version of its roguelike platformer, Spelunky, fixing numerous bugs and adding new features aimed at hardcore players. Spelunky's latest update introduces an optional "Pro" HUD that obscures less of the screen than the default interface, aiding players in crowded levels. The update additionally offers an "invert run" option, which makes running the default movement speed. When this option is enabled, players will need to hold the game's run button to walk instead of run. Version 1.4 of Spelunky also adds a backup save option and fixes repeating seed issues within the Daily Challenge mode. The changelog reports many more fixes for long-standing bugs: A ghost will no longer kill players instantly when they enter Olmec's chamber after destroying several Kali altars, for instance. The latest update is currently exclusive to the Steam version of Spelunky. An update for the GOG.com edition is coming soon. [Image: Mossmouth]

  • Spelunky mod lets players share specific generated levels

A newly released mod for the 2013 PC version of Mossmouth's roguelike platformer Spelunky enables custom seed functionality, allowing players to bypass the game's random level generator and replay specific level layouts. The "Seedlunky HD" mod automatically generates repeatable level layouts based on any entered text string. The added utility is especially useful for competitive purposes; players can distribute seeds among friends, subjecting them to particularly challenging levels. See if you can create a series of dark stages filled with tons of instant-kill spikes. Your friends will love you for it. Spelunky already offers a similar feature in its Daily Challenge mode, which pits all players against pre-designed level layouts as they compete for leaderboard rank. Daily Challenge levels are only playable once, however, whereas Seedlunky HD-generated levels can be loaded and replayed at will.
