You know that untitled Spider-man project that's set to revitalize the franchise at some point in 2012? Yeah, that's being shot in 3D (not news) using 3ality rigs and RED EPIC cameras (superhotawesome news). Peter Jackson already scooped up 30 EPICs to help him shoot his next big venture, The Hobbit, in 3D, but he's been beaten to the digital cinematography punch by the producers of the next Spidey flick, who have cornered a quartet of the cameras and actually started shooting with them on set yesterday. John Schwartzman, the dude responsible for filming the whole thing, has been extolling the virtues of using such fancy gear over on the RED forums, which is also where he promises his crew will be making further comments detailing the user experience. In slightly less thrilling RED news, the Scarlet S35 is being renamed to the EPIC Lite and will suffer the upheaval of having its features and price changed -- hit the links below for more.

When the fine folks of the USB Implementers Forum put together the specs for USB 2.0 some nine odd years ago, they certainly never dreamed that this technology would be the standard connectivity option for the tacky knickknacks of the 21st century. We know you won't be lining your mantelpiece with any of these things (the space being reserved for your Franklin Mint collector plates depicting the cast of Gone With The Wind) but maybe your cube could use some gussying up? We have 2GB thumb drives for you that almost-not-really pass themselves off as cat's ears, a USB hub that comes with "chocolate" balls of dubious provenance, a hub that might look at home next to your skull bong, and lastly, a USB powered fan with a fetching Spider-Man motif. Do any of these sound good to you? We didn't think so. But feel free to hop on past the break for a good laugh.

Read - USB Chocolate 3-Port Hub
Read - USB Memory Cat Ears
Read - Wacky Skull and Potato Polyresin USB Hubs
Read - USB Spider-Man Fan

This wrist-worn contraption enables individuals to keep mace within a finger's reach and secured to one's hand even if attacked, and we'd say there's a certain intimidation factor thrown in as an unintended bonus. Reportedly, the device is set to go on sale later this year for $30, but you know that inner superhero will force you to pick up two as you seek to live out those dreams of incapacitating baddies on the streets of New York. Just be careful where you aim, alright?
Nokia's N95 8GB super-chunk is out for global(ish) distribution today. N95 fans can now take home the larger storage and slightly bigger 2.8-inch (240 x 320) display in addition to the HSDPA, WiFi, A-GPS, and 5 megapixel camera already found in Nokia's existing flagship "multimedia computer." To celebrate the launch, Nokia is pre-loading Spider-Man 3 for Europe and select Middle Eastern and Africa countries. The tie-in? Wait for it... "The Movie sees Spider-Man's suit turn jet-black and enhance his powers and, in its latest incarnation, the Nokia N95 has undergone a similar transformation to emerge as the Nokia N95 8GB." Riiight. Hitting retail today for €560 (about $794) pre-tax and pre-carrier subsidy.

Read -- N95 8GB says "Ship Me!"
Read -- Spiderman 3 bundle
Filed under: Handsets, Nokia, Symbian, GSM, HSDPA

Nokia's N95 8GB released with a Spider-Man 3 surprise originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 15 Oct 2007 04:10:00 EST. While Spidey has definitely seen face time on handsets before, it's usually been in the form of a snap-on faceplate, but it sounds like Sony Ericsson is taking this Spider-Man 3 thing pretty seriously. Reportedly, we can expect to see a Spider-Man-approved K800i, K750i, K550i and K610i here before long, and SE already has a bevy of minisites, games, and hints of the movie all across its web portals. Furthermore, the "special edition" handsets should come pre-loaded with a trio of "exclusive Spider-Man wallpapers" along with a web-slinging screensaver to boot. To top it off, you can definitely enhance your level of geekness by carrying the mobile in a Spidey-clad hard case (complete with wrist strap, even). No word on when these will hit the mainstream, but judging by the sheer amount advertising going on at SE, we can't imagine it being too far off.

Sony Ericsson launches four Spider-Man-branded handsets originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 23 Apr 2007 20:00:00 EST. If you're looking for the perfect way out of getting a real canine in your life, or you're simply one of "those people" who just have to have every single I-Animal that gets loose from the farm, we've got yet another option to add to the fray. The Spi-Dog touts a Spider-Man-inspired motif, as the ominous eyes and perked ears let you know that this crime-fighter means business, but alas, the diminutive 4.75- x 3.25- x 5-inch size, light-up face, wagging motions, and blinking LEDs make this fella quite the softy. Per usual, this I-Dog flashes and busts a move whenever exposed to music, touts a "built-in speaker for playing your iPod" (or any other DAP / PMP), and is available now for the fanboys and Spidey freaks alike for $39.95.

[Via iLounge]

Spidey-inspired Spi-Dog wags to your iPod originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 10 Apr 2007 10:11:00 EST. As much personality and flame-throwing capability as your Robosapien might have, there's just no denying that he's a total square compared to some sexy Hollywood personality like Spider-Man or Homer Simpson. That's why we're guessing the new Spidersapien (the original name for Roboquad, if you'll remember) and Homersapien bots from Wowwee -- rebadges of Wowwee's flagship bot -- are going to do quite well for themselves, especially since Homer will be launching alongside The Simpsons Movie in July, and Spider-Man will be hitting shelves this spring to coincide with Spider-Man 3. Along with looking a bit like their respective on-screen counterparts, both robots mimic their inspirations, with Homersapien shouting a "Doh!" or three, and Spidersapien quoting Spider-Man phrases and pretending to shoot webs, complete with sound effects. No word on price, but you know you want one anyways, don't try and deny it. Peep Homer after the break.
Continue reading Wowwee cashes in with new Spidersapien and Homersapien

Wowwee cashes in with new Spidersapien and Homersapien originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 24 Jan 2007 19:51:00 EST. Sure, Spider-Man is great and all, but is all the emotional, moral and relational drama really worth it when you could just spend a few thousand on this here City Climber which does about the same thing? The robot, being developed by Jizhong Xiao and his team at the City College of New York, is targeted at New York City's mandate that requires building facades to be inspected every five years. Manual inspection usually involves suspended scaffolding and costs around $5000 a day, more than Jizhong hopes to sell his City Climber for outright. The bot clings to all sorts of surfaces using a vacuum motor to create the pressure it needs to hold on. Weighing in at 2.2 pounds, the device can carry a payload up to four times its own weight, so it shouldn't have much trouble towing along a camera or two for building inspections. By linking dual Climber modules with a hinged arm, the bot is capable of rounding 90 degree corners, or moving from a wall to the roof. Test runs should be happening this summer, spidey sense to follow next year.

[Thanks, William]

City Climber rover: Spider-Man minus the drama originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 13 Jun 2006 13:55:00 EST.
