  • Star Trek D-A-C gets new ships, modes, major online fix

Paramount has announced that a free update is now available for the Xbox 360 version of Star Trek D-A-C. The update adds two new ships to the game, the missile cruiser and the support frigate. The missile cruiser packs heavy, long range attacks, while the support frigate can heal friendly units and destroy escape pods. A new single-player survival mode has also been added as well. The online portion has been updated with more options, like configuring bot AI and the number of points needed to win. Probably the most important addition, however, is host migration. This will automatically switch hosts if the current host decides to quit -- rather than simply dropping everyone from the game. Considering we were dropped several times even in the trial version, that's probably a good addition. %Gallery-78934%

Paramount has announced that it's bringing the downloadable Star Trek D-A-C -- based on the recent film -- to the Mac. The game will be released with the help of TransGaming, meaning it will utilize Cider, software that allows PC games to be run on Macs. In other words, your hopes of experiencing the mediocrity of Star Trek D-A-C in an Apple native format have just been dashed. Sorry. The game is scheduled to launch this December and is currently available for pre-order at GameTree Online.

During the same week that Braid finally discovers a point in time to arrive on the PSN, we can't help but notice that burlesque sensation Dita Von Teese has a theme for the PS3 and PSP available. Ms. Von Teese certainly makes a better theme than Hot Pockets, but we're just surprised to see the $2 item in the store. Now ... um, can we get a dynamic theme? Transported away from its "late this summer" release window, Star Trek D-A-C – the mediocre movie cash-in tie-in – will finally tribble the PS3 (via PlayStation Network) and the PC (via Steam) with its presence this November. As previously noted, the latest edition of the top-down pew-pew fest will add new ship classes, game modes, maps and pick-ups. If you need a better idea of what this game is like, we suggest taking a look at our very polite XBLA in Brief on the title. %Gallery-49012%

Paramount announced that the PlayStation Network will be visited by Star Trek D-A-C "later this summer." For those who have masochistic tendencies or are really into the new Star Trek, picking up the PSN version will net a new ship class, variable AI and other "updated gameplay features." Perhaps a demo -- or the full game -- will come with the Blu-ray version of the movie, a la Watchmen?Like we said in our XBLA in Brief when D-A-C first released earlier this year -- it's not only the name of the game, but it's also the sound people make right before turning off the game and realizing they spent money on the experience. • Cheat code required for Star Trek D-A-C Achievement

UGO reports that Star Trek D-A-C, which released to XBLA this week, rewards players with an Achievement for entering a cheat code. More specifically, the only way to unlock said Achievement is to enter a cheat code. Reportedly called the 'Kobayashi Maru' Achievement, it's based on a training exercise from the Star Trek universe in which James T. Kirk had to cheat in order to win. The code itself hasn't been discovered, but it supposedly improves the capabilities of the player's ship within the game.If only there was a code that restored what little hope we had for Star Trek D-A-C.[Via 1UP]

It's Wednesday once again, which means it's time for a new episode of XBLA in Brief. We take a look at both Texas Cheat 'Em and Star Trek D-A-C. To sum things up, there's nothing spectacular this week. There might be something there for diehard poker or Star Trek fans, but the rest of us can probably save some MS Points.Download the trial version of Texas Cheat 'Em Download the trial version of Star Trek D-A-C[iTunes] Subscribe to X3F TV directly in iTunes.[Zune] Subscribe to the X3F TV directly (Zune Marketplace link coming soon).[RSS] Add the X3F TV feed to your RSS aggregator and have the show delivered automatically.[M4V] Download the M4V directly.

This Wednesday, XBLA fans will receive a double dose of downloads. First up is Star Trek D-A-C, which is based on the new film and supports up to 12 players for online battles. You'll be able to download it for 800 ($10). That comes out to 23.2 Darseks, if you're a Klingon.Joining Starfleet is something a bit less action-packed and frenzied: Texas Cheat 'Em. It's a spin-off from the traditional Texas Hold 'Em, allowing players to steal each other's chips and fold for free by unlocking cheats through a variety of minigames. Texas Cheat 'Em will also cost 800 ($10).%Gallery-49012%

  • Joystiq hands-on: Star Trek D-A-C

The upcoming XBLA/PSN release, Star Trek DAC, neither looks nor plays like any Star Trek game before it, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, we're pretty sure it isn't.DAC is a multiplayer arcade title through-and-through, bearing more similarity to Unreal Tournament than previous Star Trek titles. Forget tactics; the real goal of DAC is to blow things up and rake in kills. There are three modes of play: Deathmatch, Assault and Conquest, all of which can be played online or in single player with bots. Players can choose to play as the Starfleet or the Romulan Empire in matches that can support up to 12 characters.Players choose one of three ship types when spawning: the Flagship, the Fighter or the Bomber. The Flagship moves slowly, but features the strongest armor and the most powerful cannons. The Fighter is speedier, and gives players the ability to play with Geometry Wars-inspired dual analog controls. Finally, the Bomber is the fastest, least durable ship and is capable of laying mines on the playing field.%Gallery-51012%

  • Star Trek D-A-C hits XBLA in May, new screens hit right now

We already told you as much as we knew about Star Trek DAC when we grilled the game's senior producer and some folks from the film back at GDC 2009. Unfortunately, today's "new" information on the game from Paramount Digital Entertainment, Bad Robot Interactive, CBS and Naked Sky Entertainment (that's a mouthful!) did little to bolster our knowledge banks. We do, however, have a batch of new screens from the upcoming game coming to XBLA next month (and PSN/PC "shortly thereafter"), featuring gameplay with some very Star Trekkian vistas. The movie hits theaters on May 8, so expect to see the game appear on XBLA "near" the film's launch.%Gallery-51012%

  • Star Trek DAC screens don't reveal any secrets

You sort of knew this was going to be just ships in space blasting away at each other, so these screens aren't that surprising. They also tell us nothing about what DAC stands for. At this point, we're just going to start calling it Star Trek: Dork Assumes Command until we hear different. Pew pew pew!We were promised these screens last week during our meetup with Paramount / Bad Robot / Naked Sky at GDC, and they appeared briefly on the developer's website. But then they got yanked, vanished into the ether, and finally just re-materialized via an email. Are the pictures that exciting? Not really. At least it reminds us of the old Netrek game we used to play in computer programming class. We're going to have to see some videos of this baby in action before we set our phasers to fun.%Gallery-49012%

We caught up with Benjamin Hoyt, senior producer at Paramount Digital Entertainment, David Baronoff, associate producer on the new Trek film and Bad Robot workerbee, and Joshua Glazer, CTO from developer Naked Sky Entertainment to talk about all things Star Trek DAC. We didn't get any juicy screenshots or video, nor did we find out what the heck "DAC" stands for (although Baronoff did say that a lot of the fan guesses are "in the right realm"), but we did come away with a lot of information about the upcoming title that's tied to Paramount's May release of the new Star Trek movie. Beam down beyond the break where you can read all about it.

  • Rumor: Star Trek DAC releasing in May

A game based on the upcoming Star Trek reboot will apparently hit retail (virtual?) shelves this May. Discovered by TrekMovie.com, an insert going into the Star Trek Season One Blu-ray release announces Star Trek DAC. There is no further information on ParamountPictures.com/games (it just bounces back to the main site), nor on developer Naked Sky Entertainment's website. Naked Sky's first title was RoboBlitz a couple years back, but since then the developer has been fairly quiet. There also doesn't appear to be a publisher attached to the title -- perhaps Paramount is ready to publish solo? We've contacted Paramount for further details and will update when we receive them. Check out the full Star Trek DAC insert after the break.[Via Big Download]
