We've mentioned the problems folks have had with the Leopard upgrade with unsanity's APE installed. As Gruber points out, however, the same problem can affect people who have installed the Logitech Control Center software that comes with Logitech mice and keyboards, because LCC apparently uses APE behind the scenes. While some finger wagging is due to Logitech for this, the question now comes up as to what to use instead of LCC to gain access to all the buttons. It turns out that there are at least three options: USB Overdrive ($20), SteerMouse ($20), and ControllerMate ($15), all of which are now Leopard compatible. Of the three, I've only used ControllerMate myself and would recommend it. However, any of the three should give you back control of your Logitech mouse -- it's just a shame you have to spend extra money to get this kind of functionality.[via Daring Fireball]

Last week, Mike did a great job with Ask TUAW and we had a bumper crop of questions. We won't be able to get to all of them this week, but we'll be looking at a number of different issues including: shifting times in iPhoto, getting a Mac and HDTV to work well together, comparing the 24" iMac to the Power Mac G5 in gaming, setting recurring events in iCal, backing up, customizing Mighty Mouse tracking, and getting Gmail in Mail.app.Remember: everyone's welcome to post questions for Ask TUAW; we're happy to help! Just leave questions for next week in the comments. Now let's get to it.

Last week happened to be the start of our Mac 101 series and we had a lot of questions posted in the comments to the inaugural post. So this week in Ask TUAW, in addition to our normal questions, I've decided that to tackle some of those questions as well. I want to emphasize that new Mac users and Switchers should feel very welcome to post questions for Ask TUAW. We're happy to take questions from all levels. As always, please submit your questions by commenting to this post or using our tip form. This week we'll be addressing questions about pasting with the middle mouse button a la X11, previewing pictures in the Finder, locking the screen to preclude mischief, and much more. Let's get to it.

  • SteerMouse driver for Mighty Mouse

Gee, that didn't take long! A mere 10 days after Apple released their new Mighty Mouse, Plentycom Systems has released a driver that adds a bunch of functions that Apple neglected to include in their own driver.SteerMouse allows you to assign and customize various functions to the Mighty Mouse's "buttons", such as speed, cursor acceleration, shortcut keys, scrolling, double-click, right-click and "snap to" cursor movement, which moves the cursor to whatever dialog button is active (like "ok."). It works with other USB mice as well, with support for horizontal scrolling and up to 8 buttons! You'll need Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later (with plans to support Intel Macs in the future) to install it and it requires you to uninstall any third-party mouse drivers you may already be using. Apple's mouse driver does not need to be uninstalled, however. SteerMouse will cost you $20, which sounds steep for a mouse driver. Then again, USB Overdrive is also $20 and it doesn't yet support the Mighty Mouse, so this one may be worth a try. There's a 30 day trial before you have to register it. What I really want to know, though, is how it got to be at version 2.0 already?Take it for a spin and let us know how you like it.
