The interesting part of being a software reviewer in the early days of the iPad platform is that sometimes you test applications that show a lot of promise and are among the first of their genre in the App Store. Freeform (US$4.99), a vector drawing app for the iPad platform from Stunt Software, falls into this class of app. It's probably the best app of its type right now, and the developer is working on making changes to the app to make it even more useful to iPad users. For those of you who aren't familiar with vector drawing applications, they are used to place and color shapes on a background, and usually provide a way to add text labels. In other words, for creating a diagram of some sort, they work well -- but they aren't the type of app that you'd want to use for freehand sketching. I had the opportunity to try out Freeform, and while it's a good start at a powerful iPad drawing app, it still has some shortcomings that the developer is aware of and is planning on resolving. If this review piques your interest, you may wish to purchase the app soon, as the app price is currently listed as an "introductory price." Read on for more comments and screenshots of Freeform in action.

Stunt Software has just released OverFlow 2.0, which is a simple Finder alternative that lives in your Dock. It is an application launcher, a file opener, and an organizational tool to help keep your virtual workspace clear of clutter. A lot has changed since we first wrote about OverFlow. New to 2.0 are categories, the ability to drag documents onto applications in OverFlow, and an improved help system.OverFlow 2.0 is Universal and will cost you $14.95 (there is a free trial available).

While there are many full-featured launchers and dock alternatives available, Overflow by Stunt Software keeps it simple. The interface features several wells, into which you can drop an application, folder, volume and so on. Simply click the Overflow icon in the dock to activate it (or better yet, let Quicksilver do the job), then click the icon representing what you're after. Simple and effective.Overflow requires Mac OS 10.3.9 or later and costs $14.95US (or, if you're very quick, $9.95US at Maczot for the next couple of hours).

If you've got the type of job that requires you to track your billable hours, check out On The Job by Stunt Software. It's got a very iTunes-like interface and makes tracking the tasks associated with a given job really easy. Simply create one folder per job, and store the associated tasks inside. Click the "Play" button when you clock in, and the meter starts running. Click it again, and it stops (See? Easy). On The Job even creates a nice invoice that you can print with a click (Ok, two clicks). It's pretty nice, and a single license will cost you $24.95 (requires Mac OS 10.3.9 or later). Incidentally, Stunt Software is giving away one iPod nano at the end of April, as well as 30 free licenses for On The Job (one every day in April). That should make work a little more tolerable.
