Mobisante's MobiUS smartphone <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/ultrasound">ultrasound</a> system scored <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/06/mobisantes-mobius-smartphone-ultrasound-system-secures-fda-clea/">FDA approval</a> back in February, a big step towards getting the product out the door. Now the brainchild of former Microsoft bigwig Dr. Sailesh Chutani is finally available to order, the only problem is that it's based around two-year-old tech. At the heart of the MobiUS system is a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/17/toshiba-tg01-hands-on-and-video-walkthrough/">Toshiba TG01</a> (it of Windows Mobile 6.5 stock) a now hopelessly outdated handset. Still, the probe and phone together cost $7,495, just a tiny fraction of what traditional ultrasound systems cost. We're sure there are small clinics, especially in poor and remote parts of the world, that are already eyeing Dr. Chutani's solution and, if his company scores enough orders, he hopes to cut the price in half. Maybe they can put some of that money towards developing a system that works with smartphone platforms people actually use -- like Android and iOS. Check out the demo video after the break.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/13/mobius-smartphone-ultrasound-hits-the-market-two-years-too-late/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>MobiUS smartphone ultrasound hits the market two years too late for relevancy</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/13/mobius-smartphone-ultrasound-hits-the-market-two-years-too-late/">MobiUS smartphone ultrasound hits the market two years too late for relevancy</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 13 Oct 2011 09:18:00 EST. Here's some of the other stuff that happened in the wide world of wireless for the week of August 8, 2011:
<ul>
	<li>
		A Toshiba TG01 running Windows Phone 7 was put on <a href="http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1200574">private sale</a>. Sadly, the camera doesn't work and its resistive screen won't support multitouch, but otherwise seems to work fine. Offers are being accepted. More <a href="http://pocketnow.com/android/lg-flip-ii-for-t-mobile-revealed-photos?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+pocketnow+%28pocketnow.com%29">leaked pictures</a> of the LG Flip II surfaced, showing a couple more angles of the slider phone that has a secondary touch screen set right in between both sides of a split keyboard. Definitely not your average phone. [via <a href="http://www.landofdroid.com/2011/lg-flip-ii-spotted-again/">LandofDroid</a>]</li>

		Tired of hearing about the Droid Bionic? Skip this blurb. Someone who said they were a <a href="http://androidforums.com/motorola-droid-bionic/363715-official-bionic-release-date-speculation-thread-10.html#post3055525">tester of the Bionic</a> claimed the new LTE device will, as hoped, have an improved battery life; in fact, the tester was able to get 15 hours of full use out it. Need your dumbphone fix? Verizon and LG announced the arrival of the LG Revere this week, a simple clamshell phone that, if you're not careful, could easily transport you back to 2005. It's packing a 1.3 megapixel camera and Bluetooth. That's about all there is to it. [via <a href="http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/verizon-wireless-and-lg-mobile-invite-customers-to-discover-the-lg-revere-127516248.html">PRNewsWire</a>]</li>
	<li>
		Google Movies, the video app that reached most Honeycomb devices over the summer, is now available for any Android device that has Froyo or better. The app gives you access to plenty of movie rentals and even gives you a spot to store your own personal collection. [via <a href="http://www.androidcentral.com/videos-app-now-working-all-devices-22?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+androidcentral+%28Android+Central%29&amp;style_mobile=0">AndroidCentral</a>]</li>

		Samsung is rumored to be following the lead of Nokia and changing the naming scheme of its phones. Essentially, its Galaxy lineup would be grouped into four separate categories, each defined by its own letter: R would be top-of-the-line, W for high-tier, M for midrange, and Y for entry-level. A similar naming system would be set up for Sammy's Bada devices. Check the via for the full breakdown. The HTC Bliss -- aka "the girl phone," as many seem to be calling it these days -- may be coming to Verizon as an exclusive before heading to Europe. It will come in three different color choices, has an 800MHz CPU with Adreno 205 GPU, and should be preloaded with Android 2.3.4 and HTC Sense 3.5. (thx Eugen) [via <a href="http://translate.google.com/translate?js=n&amp;prev=_t&amp;hl=en&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;layout=2&amp;eotf=1&amp;sl=auto&amp;tl=en&amp;u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.htcinside.de%2Fneue-informationen-zum-htc-bliss%2F&amp;act=url">HTCInside(translated)</a>]</li>

		The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/18/mobile-miscellany-week-of-july-11-2011/">Motorola Fire</a>, Europe's version of the Droid Pro, is now up for presale in the UK. <a href="http://www.clove.co.uk/motorola-fire">Online retailer <em>Clove</em></a> reports that the Fire, in addition to the specs we've already heard about, has a user interface named "Switch." We're curious to see if this is the official name of Blur's replacement. We've seen the HTC Merge hit US Cellular, but now it's available for <a href="https://www.cellularsouth.com/cscommerce/static/products/phones/prod23780023/HTC-Merge.html">Cellular South </a>customers as well. It's all yours for $100 and a two-year commitment. [via <a href="http://www.androidcentral.com/htc-merge-now-available-cellular-south">AndroidCentral</a>]</li>

The aforesaid company has just landed what may in fact be the most important part of the production puzzle: 510(k) clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration. That's a major seal of approval, and pretty much allows the company to move forward with plans to get ultrasound technology into remote villages and rural hospitals where it's simply not feasible to purchase a $20,000+ system. Of course, there's still many years of work between now and then; the existing build only works on Toshiba's WinMo-based <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/17/toshiba-tg01-hands-on-and-video-walkthrough/">TG01</a> smartphone, and current estimates still put a $7,000 to $8,000 price tag on the whole MobiUS package. If it can reach critical mass, it's hoping to halve that asking price, and if things keep progressing, this may very well be the company that makes an ultrasound stethoscope a reality. Here's hoping this is just the firm's first celebration of many to come.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/06/mobisantes-mobius-smartphone-ultrasound-system-secures-fda-clea/">Mobisante's MobiUS smartphone ultrasound system secures FDA clearance, now needs to graduate from WinMo</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sun, 06 Feb 2011 23:29:00 EST. It's easy to forget about the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/TG01/">TG01</a> nowadays, but bear in mind that Toshiba's WinMo beast from last year was the first production phone in the world to use Qualcomm <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Snapdragon/">Snapdragon</a> silicon. Oh, and it was under 10mm thick and featured a 4.1-inch WVGA display at a time when such specs were basically science fiction -- so you've got to give credit where credit's due. Anyhow, the phone's far from obsolete -- apart from that little WinMo issue, that is, so the good folks on <em>xda-developers</em> have started the time-honored tradition of transplanting Android onto it. Important stuff still isn't working (the lack of calling capability is a big one for us, personally) but we're guessing it's just a matter of time before we see a solid, usable build in the wild now. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/30/htc-hd2-caught-running-android-2-1-and-ubuntu-with-touchscreen-e/">HD2, watch your back</a>!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/27/toshiba-tg01-slowly-surely-gets-hacked-to-run-android/">Toshiba TG01 slowly, surely gets hacked to run Android</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sat, 27 Nov 2010 03:45:00 EST. Can you name them all? Don't worry, it's a lot to keep track of. Clockwise we have the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/tilt2">HTC Tilt 2</a> (AT&amp;T), <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/tg01">Toshiba TG01</a> (not announced for US), <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/imagio">HTC Imagio</a> (Verizon), <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/pure">HTC Pure</a> (AT&amp;T), <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/06/samsung-intrepid-intros-sprint-to-windows-mobile-6-5-on-october/">Samsung Intrepid</a> (Sprint) and LG GM750 (not announced for US). It's a pretty diverse roundup, with two QWERTY phones in the mix and an incredible variety of home screens and themes, though all six do house touchscreens -- resistive, of course. Check out a super quick meet and greet after the break. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/windows-mobile-6-5-a-family-portrait-1/">Windows Mobile 6.5: a family portrait</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/windows-mobile-6-5-a-family-portrait-1/#2343485"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/10/winmo-fam-01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/windows-mobile-6-5-a-family-portrait-1/#2343484"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/10/winmo-fam-02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/windows-mobile-6-5-a-family-portrait-1/#2343492"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/10/winmo-fam-03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/windows-mobile-6-5-a-family-portrait-1/#2343489"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/10/winmo-fam-04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/windows-mobile-6-5-a-family-portrait-1/#2343482"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/10/winmo-fam-05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/06/windows-mobile-6-5-a-family-portrait/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Windows Mobile 6.5: a family portrait</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/htc/" rel="tag">HTC</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/lg/" rel="tag">LG</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/samsung/" rel="tag">Samsung</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/atandt/" rel="tag">ATT</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/sprint/" rel="tag">Sprint</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/verizon-wireless/" rel="tag">Verizon Wireless</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/windows-mobile/" rel="tag">Windows Mobile</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/toshiba/" rel="tag">Toshiba</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/06/windows-mobile-6-5-a-family-portrait/">Windows Mobile 6.5: a family portrait</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 06 Oct 2009 20:31:00 EST. <ul>
    <li>Samsung's <a href="http://us.aving.net/news/view.php?articleId=134883">got a version</a> of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Jet/">Jet</a> for its domestic Korean market, the clumsily-named "Haptic AMOLED." Unlike its international cousin, the Haptic AMOLED packs a T-DMB tuner (as just about all Korean phones do) and it's available in spicy pink and white shades for the usual carriers SKT, KTF, and LGT.</li>
    <li>Did you know that AT&amp;T used to have a stake in the Indian wireless market? Yeah, us neither, but they did prior to the Cingular merger -- and rumor has it they're <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/News/News-By-Industry/Telecom/ATT-eyes-BSNL-stake-to-re-enter-India/articleshow/4953086.cms">looking to get back in</a> by buying a chunk of state-owned operator BSNL, ostensibly because the market -- which is still in a heavy growth phase -- is seen as a powder keg waiting to explode.</li>
    <li>This one's been going around for a few days, and with the carrier's full-court press on Android, it makes total sense: the Bluetooth SIG is <a href="https://www.bluetooth.org/tpg/EPL_Detail.cfm?ProductID=10031">reporting</a> that the Samsung T939 Behold2 for T-Mobile will feature "Google Mobile services," which would fit in with an earlier <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/14/confirmed-samsungs-sgh-t939-behold2-for-t-mobile-runs-android/">user agent profile leak</a>. [Via <a href="http://www.cellphonesignal.com/samsung-behold-2-and-android-phone-confirmed/">Cell Phone Signal</a>]</li>
    <li>There's a new Samsung i8910 HD firmware that's <a href="http://www.samsungomniahd.com/2009/09/04/samsung-i8910-gets-new-xeii1-update-3d-taskswitcher/">starting to hit some regions</a>, and it's a good one -- it features an all-new 3D task switcher and a built-in weather forecast widget for TouchWiz. [Via <a href="http://www.phonearena.com/htmls/New-update-for-the-Samsung-OMNIA-HD-brings-3D-multitasking-article-a_6800.html">PhoneArena</a>]</li>
    <li>Surprise, surprise: Toshiba is <a href="http://www.slashphone.com/toshiba-re-launches-tg01-with-windows-mobile-6-5-036739">relaunching</a> the mighty <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/TG01/">TG01</a> with Windows Mobile 6.5 next month, a move that was fully expected all along. If anything, there'd be riots had this <em>not</em> happened.</li>
    <li>Sony Ericsson's Panel SDK for the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/X2/">X2</a> is <a href="http://developer.sonyericsson.com/site/global/newsandevents/latestnews/newssept09/p_sony_ericsson_puts_developers_at_centre_of_user_experience.jsp">now available</a>, featuring new "Panelizer" tools to convert existing apps into panels in a few easy steps -- and starting in the next few days, devs will be able to submit their work for inclusion in the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/PlayNowarena/">PlayNow arena</a>.</li>
    <li>Vodafone has <a href="http://www.vodafone.com/start/media_relations/news/group_press_releases/2009/vodafone_533_crystal.html">launched</a> a range of eight new self-branded devices that'll be available in time for the holidays this year, and as usual, they're positioned squarely at the lower end of the market. Some of them like the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/E71/">E71</a> ripoff 1240 (pictured) are straight-up KIRFs, while others like the "Crystal" member of the 533 Catwalk Collection are trying to ooze fashion and style without killing the wad of cash stuffed in your pocket. Whether they've succeeded in doing that... well, that's another question altogether. Just as it's starting to seem like MEMS <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/28/invensense-gloats-about-worlds-first-6-axis-mems-based-motion-s/">motion sensor</a> technology is gaining more <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/12/mems-gyroscopes-rumored-to-hit-array-of-phones-in-2009/">widespread use</a>, we're now hearing rumblings of activity from the developers of its eventual successor: NEMS (Nano-Electro-Mechanical Systems). To contextualize this discussion (and to give laypeople a shot at understanding), MEMS sensors are the magic behind the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/MotionPlus/">Wii MotionPlus</a> as well as a stunning <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/22/toshiba-tg01-gets-third-party-motion-sensor-attachment-for-large/">tech demo</a> recently conducted on a Toshiba <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/TG01/">TG01</a>. The nascent nano version promises <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/01/quantum-pis-nanotrek-sensors-pick-up-vibration-and-motion-your/">even greater sensitivity</a>, and now scientists from TU Delft in the Netherlands claim they have successfully measured the influence of a single electron on an 800nm-long carbon nanowire. Just detecting such an event is a feat in itself, while the ability to measure its effects can be used in a huge range of ways: from transportation and medicine to ultra-sensitive gaming controllers. While accurate comparisons between the Dutch breakthrough and current generation sensors cannot yet be drawn, we can confidently say that this marks an important step toward making our dreams of playing a nanoscale piano a gargantuan reality.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cellphones/" rel="tag">Cellphones</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gaming/" rel="tag">Gaming</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/science/" rel="tag">Science</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/27/nems-takes-step-forward-mems-looking-nervously-over-shoulder/">NEMS takes step forward, MEMS looking nervously over shoulder</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 27 Jul 2009 08:42:00 EST. Looking for a way to further push the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Snapdragon/">Snapdragon</a> processor while constrained with a 4.1-inch screen, the Japanese-based Usuda Research Institute and Systems Corp has tacked on a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/MEMS/">MEMS</a> motion sensor to Toshiba's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/22/toshibas-tg01-snapdragon-phone-launched-as-ntt-docomo-t-01a-in/">T-01A</a>, also known as the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/TG01/">TG01</a>, for motion-based navigation around what it's touting is a 2,000-inch picture. According to <em>Nikkei, </em>this "<a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/MotionPlus/">MotionPlus</a>" like adapter has been shown to work alongside the camera, potentially paving the way for some AR application like we've seen <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/16/tegra-might-power-zune-hd-definitely-does-augmented-zombie-real/">with Tegra</a>. It's hard to tell from the videos just how accurate it is, but we'd love to see this go official -- after a few cosmetic improvements, of course. Looking for a way to further push the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Snapdragon/">Snapdragon</a> processor while constrained with a 4.1-inch screen, the Japanese-based Usuda Research Institute and Systems Corp has tacked on a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/MEMS/">MEMS</a> motion sensor to Toshiba's <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2009/06/22/toshibas-tg01-snapdragon-phone-launched-as-ntt-docomo-t-01a-in/">T-01A</a>, also known as the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/TG01/">TG01</a>, for motion-based navigation around what it's touting is a 2,000-inch picture. The <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/tag/Snapdragon/">Snapdragon</a>-powered Toshiba <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/tag/TG01/">TG01</a> is a beast of a phone -- as Windows Mobile-powered phones go, anyway -- but for Americans, there's one small problem: it's not clear how, when, or if it's getting here. We still don't have many answers there, but we've got one piece of very encouraging news in the FCC approval of a CDMA flavor today, bearing all the hardware you'll need to use the phone on a carrier like... oh, you know, Sprint or Verizon. Even better, the test documents list the device as "production" -- many FCC filings use prototype hardware -- suggesting that this is pretty close to being ready for market. So, as we said, Sprint or Verizon have to be ramping up for this -- but which one is it? <div align="left">It's bad enough picking up a virus because you've made an uncharacteristic (to you at least) <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/22/iwork-09-trojan-infects-at-least-20-000-machines/">illegal software acquisition</a>, but <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/07/hp-sends-server-customers-virus-infected-usb-keys/">bringing</a> one <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/14/asus-pre-installs-japanese-eee-box-pcs-with-worm-issues-recall/">home</a> when you're just minding your own business, trying to enjoy your legitimate and hard-earned purchase, is <em>totally</em> uncool. Case in point: according to Inside-Handy.de, a few unlucky customers of O2 in Germany have purchased the TG01 handset only to discover a virus present on the device. While Toshiba tries to determine the impact and the cause of the infection, O2 has halted sales of the smartphone, though there's no word on when sales will resume nor if this infection has spread to other European nations.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.unwiredview.com/2009/07/15/german-o2s-toshiba-tg01-ships-with-virus-preinstalled/">Unwired View</a>]<br /></div>

Orange has come out this morning, in advance of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/01/toshibas-tg01-stepping-out-in-london-on-july-9th/">official UK unveiling of the phone</a>, to confirm it will be the exclusive UK carrier of the TG01. We can confirm availability from July 10 (i.e. tomorrow), and the phone can be had for free on a 2-year contract costing &pound;39.15 per month. To figure out if that sort of investment is worth it, we'll have an intrepid reporter stationed at this afternoon's event, who'll be bringing you up-to-the-minute details and imagery of the first Snapdragon handset to hit British shores. You'll find the full PR at the read link, or continue reading for an unshaven Orange rep walking you through the phone's specs.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.coolsmartphone.com/news4853.html">CoolSmartPhone</a>]<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/09/video-toshiba-tg01-officially-exclusive-to-orange-uk/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Video: Toshiba TG01 officially exclusive to Orange UK</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/windows-mobile/" rel="tag">Windows Mobile</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/toshiba/" rel="tag">Toshiba</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/09/video-toshiba-tg01-officially-exclusive-to-orange-uk/">Video: Toshiba TG01 officially exclusive to Orange UK</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 09 Jul 2009 06:37:00 EST. It's already out in Japan and a few <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/23/toshiba-tg01-now-available-on-movistar-in-spain/">select countries</a> in Europe, now Toshiba's skinny <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/tg01">TG01</a> is hitting London on Thursday, July 9th. Presumably the invite will be met with an official UK launch of Tosh's deftly skinned <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/01/qualcomms-1-3ghz-qsd8650a-snapdragon-chipset-is-30-stronger/">Snapdragon</a> handset with a Windows Mobile 6.1 core. Then again, it could be a lot of tech reporters eating mini triangular sandwiches slathered with pickle spread discussing the HTC Hero for four hours. We'll let you know next week.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/windows-mobile/" rel="tag">Windows Mobile</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/toshiba/" rel="tag">Toshiba</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/01/toshibas-tg01-stepping-out-in-london-on-july-9th/">Toshiba's TG01 stepping out in London on July 9th</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 01 Jul 2009 07:28:00 EST. If you're in... say, Spain, we can understand how you might perceive Japan as being a bit far to go just to put your hands on <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/22/toshibas-tg01-snapdragon-phone-launched-as-ntt-docomo-t-01a-in/">Toshiba's T-01A Snapdragon powerhouse</a>. Then again, it is the first <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Snapdragon/">Snapdragon</a> handset to hit the market -- and it's an absolutely stunning-looking phone -- so we certainly wouldn't blame you for packing your belongings, children, and pets into wooden crates, shipping them via freighter, and hopping the next flight to Tokyo. The good news, though, is that you won't have to: Movistar has now launched the phone locally in its global <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/TG01/">TG01</a> flavor, offering 7.2Mbps down, 2Mbps up, a flippin' 4.1-inch wide VGA display, and very likely the snappiest Windows Mobile experience you've ever had. The best part is that you can get it for free depending on your contract and plan pricing, so seriously, what's holding you (other than the fact that you might not be in Spain)?<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/movistar/" rel="tag">Movistar</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/windows-mobile/" rel="tag">Windows Mobile</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gsm/" rel="tag">GSM</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/edge/" rel="tag">EDGE</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hsdpa/" rel="tag">HSDPA</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/umts/" rel="tag">UMTS</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hsupa-1/" rel="tag">HSUPA</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/toshiba/" rel="tag">Toshiba</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/23/toshiba-tg01-now-available-on-movistar-in-spain/">Toshiba TG01 now available on Movistar in Spain</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 23 Jun 2009 09:24:00 EST. <div align="left">One of the hottest pieces of gear this year just made its way to retail in Japan. Less than a centimeter thick, the NTT DoCoMo T-01A is the same <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/17/toshiba-tg01-hands-on-and-video-walkthrough/">TG01</a> device revealed by Toshiba <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/03/toshiba-tg01-with-4-1-inch-wvga-touchscreen-a-worlds-first-sna/">back in February</a> running Qualcomm's ultra-fast 1GHz Snapdragon chipset. As such, our far east brethren can lay claim to that 4.1-inch WVGA (800 x 480 pixel) resistive touchscreen display; HSDPA, GPS, and WiFi radios; and Toshiba's custom-built UI meant to mask its Windows Mobile 6.1 core with a bit of Rothko misdirection. <div align="left">One of the hottest pieces of gear this year just made its way to retail in Japan. Less than a centimeter thick, the NTT DoCoMo T-01A is the same <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/17/toshiba-tg01-hands-on-and-video-walkthrough/">TG01</a> device revealed by Toshiba <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/03/toshiba-tg01-with-4-1-inch-wvga-touchscreen-a-worlds-first-sna/">back in February</a> running Qualcomm's ultra-fast 1GHz <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/01/qualcomms-1-3ghz-qsd8650a-snapdragon-chipset-is-30-stronger/">Snapdragon</a> chipset. DoCoMo just issued a press release today touting the fact that it has hooked up with Spain's Telefonica to jointly launch the phone in both companies' markets -- and furthermore, they're exploring ways to expand their cooperation in the future, including (but not limited to) "a joint study of possible services and applications for open OS handsets." Japanese carriers have a rich history of partnering with their international counterparts -- <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/07/12/att-ntt-docomo-partner-up-on-3g-rollout-for-hawaii/">DoCoMo's investment in AT&amp;T's Hawaiian network</a>, for example -- but unfortunately, very rarely does the partnership result in getting Japanese domestic market hardware launched elsewhere, which is a tragedy as far as we're concerned.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/movistar/" rel="tag">Movistar</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/ntt-docomo/" rel="tag">NTT DoCoMo</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/toshiba/" rel="tag">Toshiba</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/25/ntt-docomo-and-telefonica-teaming-up-on-toshiba-tg01-t-01a-lau/">NTT DoCoMo and Telefonica teaming up on Toshiba TG01 / T-01A launch</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 25 May 2009 17:26:00 EST. We like where this is headed. Toshiba seems poised to capitalize on its incredibly aggressive <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/tag/TG01/">TG01</a> form factor, with the TG02 slated for Q4, and the TG03 for some time after that. We <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/14/toshibas-leaked-product-roadmap-gets-us-hot-extra-bothered/">already got the skinny on the new handsets</a>, along with the QWERTY-equipped K01 and K02 counter parts, and now we've got a few new shots of the TG series to keep things interesting. It's all a little low-fi at the moment, but while the TG03 looks like the most basic of renders, the TG02 shot (above) seems somewhat photographic in nature -- just think if Mr. Blurrycam had some sort of fixation for dotted lines.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/toshiba-tg02-and-tg03-shots-surface/">Toshiba TG02 and TG03 shots surface</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/toshiba-tg02-and-tg03-shots-surface/#1509018"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgetmobile.com/media/2009/04/toshiba-tg021_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/toshiba-tg02-and-tg03-shots-surface/#1509017"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgetmobile.com/media/2009/04/toshiba-tg02-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/toshiba-tg02-and-tg03-shots-surface/#1509016"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgetmobile.com/media/2009/04/toshiba-tg03-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/toshiba-tg02-and-tg03-shots-surface/#1509015"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgetmobile.com/media/2009/04/toshiba-tg03-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><a href="http://translate.google.com/translate?js=n&amp;prev=_t&amp;hl=en&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;u=http%3A%2F%2Ftechblog.gr%2Fmobile%2Ftoshiba-tg02-photos%2F&amp;sl=auto&amp;tl=en&amp;history_state0=">Read</a> - TG02 leaked shots<br /><a href="http://translate.google.com/translate?js=n&amp;prev=_t&amp;hl=en&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;u=http%3A%2F%2Ftechblog.gr%2Fmobile%2Ftoshiba-tg03-photos%2F&amp;sl=auto&amp;tl=en&amp;history_state0=">Read</a> - TG03 leaked shots<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cellphones/" rel="tag">Cellphones</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handhelds/" rel="tag">Handhelds</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/21/toshiba-tg02-and-tg03-shots-surface/">Toshiba TG02 and TG03 shots surface</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 21 Apr 2009 16:08:00 EST. <div align="left">If the roadmap posted after the break is to be believed (and we think it is) then Toshiba is set to capture a lot of attention with its Snapdragon-based handhelds over the coming year. <em>Techblog.gr</em> has what it claims to be the Toshiba Device Roadmap through 2010. They've shown us a PowerPoint sample off-line that seems to support the claim. Of course, this isn't the first time Tosh has <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/12/18/more-on-the-portege-g920-and-toshibas-2008-roadmap/">leaked an entire product cycle</a> and the named devices align nicely with some of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/11/toshibas-dmfc-internet-viewer-prototypes-are-truly-next-gen/">prototypes</a> Toshiba was showing-off at CES in January (see gallery below). Toshiba was already off to a good start in 2009 with its incredibly thin <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/03/toshiba-tg01-with-4-1-inch-wvga-touchscreen-a-worlds-first-sna/">4.1-inch TG01</a> running atop Qualcomm's snapdragon platform. It just gets better from there. First we've got the TG02 (launching in Q4) update to the TG01 that adds IPX4 water resistance without changing the specs or the dimensions. The TG03 ups the ante again with the inclusion of a 3-channel speaker for a better video experience. <br /><br />Also in Q4, Tosh looks ready to launch a 15-mm QWERTY slider version of the 9.9-mm TG01 with new capacitive (!) touchscreen called the K01. All other specs look unchanged including WinMo 6.5. Next is the K02 clamshell with primary 3.5-inch WVGA display and QWERTY on the inside coupled with a secondary LCD and 10-key on-screen keypad on the outside. The K02 features a resistive touchscreen, HSPA data, and same QSD8x50 chipset found in the TG01 (and all the other devices on this roadmap). Last, but by no means least, is the 7-inch L01 looking every bit the love-child of a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/08/nokia-debuts-the-n800-internet-tablet-to-little-fanfare/">Nokia N800</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/htc%2Cadvantage">HTC Advantage</a>. The very same device that was shown <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/11/toshibas-dmfc-internet-viewer-prototypes-are-truly-next-gen/">powered by a DMFC (fuel cell)</a> at CES in January. Interesting since Toshiba has promised a consumer device powered by a fuel cell <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/23/toshiba-misses-another-consumer-fuel-cell-launch-date-as-expecte/">before March of 2010</a>. Unfortunately, it's limited to WinMo 6.5 (with a hint of a Windows Mobile 7 in 2010) and the same WVGA resolution seen on the smaller screens when it launches. Assuming the leak is true, of course.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/toshibas-dmfc-internet-viewer-prototypes-are-truly-next-gen/">Toshiba's DMFC "internet viewer" prototypes are truly next-gen</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/toshibas-dmfc-internet-viewer-prototypes-are-truly-next-gen/#1281037"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/01/toshiba-iv-001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/toshibas-dmfc-internet-viewer-prototypes-are-truly-next-gen/#1281036"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/01/toshiba-iv-002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/toshibas-dmfc-internet-viewer-prototypes-are-truly-next-gen/#1281041"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/01/toshiba-iv-003_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/toshibas-dmfc-internet-viewer-prototypes-are-truly-next-gen/#1281035"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/01/toshiba-iv-004_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/toshibas-dmfc-internet-viewer-prototypes-are-truly-next-gen/#1281034"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/01/toshiba-iv-005_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></div>

Toshiba definitely made some waves at MWC with the Snapdragon-powered <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/tg01">TG01</a>, but you'll have to wait a while to get the real thing -- or you can front like you're VIP with the Venus JXD318 here, which cops all the style with none of the substance. You'll have to keep your friends at a distance (and possibly a little drunk) to keep the illusion alive, however: Venus didn't see fit to clone <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/17/toshiba-tg01-hands-on-and-video-walkthrough/">Tosh's stripes UI</a>, instead going with the sadly-ubiquitous "wannabe iPhone" look, and the whole thing is controlled by those five tiny side buttons, since it's not a touchscreen. That's a pretty weak effort, overall -- come on, KIRFers, you can do better.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.pmptoday.com/2009/03/04/venus-jxd318-mp4-player-clones-toshiba-tg01/">PMP Today</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/toshiba/" rel="tag">Toshiba</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/05/keepin-it-real-fake-part-clxxxvii-the-toshiba-tg01-doesnt-de/">Keepin' it real fake, part CLXXXVII: the Toshiba TG01 doesn't deserve this kind of love</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 05 Mar 2009 15:47:00 EST. That's a pretty weak effort, overall -- come on, KIRFers, you can do better.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.pmptoday.com/2009/03/04/venus-jxd318-mp4-player-clones-toshiba-tg01/">PMP Today</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cellphones/" rel="tag">Cellphones</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/05/keepin-it-real-fake-part-clxxxvii-the-toshiba-tg01-doesnt-de/">Keepin' it real fake, part CLXXXVII: the Toshiba TG01 doesn't deserve this kind of love</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 05 Mar 2009 15:47:00 EST. If there's an organization phone manufacturers probably shouldn't be pulling shenanigans on, the FCC ranks at or near the top of the list -- but Toshiba's latest filing has an awful lot of holes in it that need some 'splaining. At first glance, you'd figure this thing is a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/TG01/">TG01</a>, no big deal, and the product code of TM5-E01 seems to match up with the "E01" sticker at the bottom of the pictured test unit. A quick glance through the user's manual, though, reveals mentions of a 96 x 39 OLED secondary display, a primary display that's a full 1.1 inches smaller than the TG01's, and a device outline that's narrower, shorter, and way thicker. What does that sound like, exactly? A flip phone -- a form factor rarer than unicorns <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/06/15/i-mate-smartflip-star-trek-now-available/">in the WinMo community</a> -- but the pictures in the user's manual are of a TG01, not a flip. If we had to guess, this is an ultra-early draft of the manual with contents partially and haphazardly ripped out of another model's, but wouldn't it be crazy if Tosh dropped a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Snapdragon/">Snapdragon</a>-powered clamshell this year?<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.unwiredview.com/2009/03/04/what-the-heck-is-toshiba-tm5-e01/">Unwired View</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/windows-mobile/" rel="tag">Windows Mobile</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gsm/" rel="tag">GSM</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/edge/" rel="tag">EDGE</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hsdpa/" rel="tag">HSDPA</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/umts/" rel="tag">UMTS</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/toshiba/" rel="tag">Toshiba</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/04/weird-toshiba-fcc-filing-suggests-of-all-things-a-winmo-fl/">Weird Toshiba FCC filing suggests -- of all things -- a WinMo flip?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 04 Mar 2009 11:17:00 EST. Toshiba's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/tg01">TG01</a> and its surprisingly awesome color bar-centric UI will soon be saying "guten tag" to its German friends. O2's announced that it'll be the exclusive carrier for the phone in Deutschland and will launch it sometime this summer, with mum being the word currently on price. So far it's the only TG01 launch we've heard about on this or any other planet, but we'd reckon a few more carriers will be chiming in soon to pick up the device for their respective countries.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.slashgear.com/toshiba-tg01-hitting-o2-germany-over-summer-0336315/">SlashGear</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/o2/" rel="tag">O2</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/toshiba/" rel="tag">Toshiba</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/03/toshibas-tg01-brings-gluck-to-germany-with-o2-exclusivity/">Toshiba's TG01 brings glück to Germany with O2 exclusivity</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 03 Mar 2009 15:48:00 EST. <div align="left">While we weren't originally cheering fans of the Toshiba <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/tag/TG01/">TG01</a>'s somewhat odd "stripey" interface, checking it out in person tells a different tale. It actually makes sense and works surprisingly well, and really, there is a reason why we've seen so many Windows Mobile skinning efforts, the shipped interface needs it. Most functions you need can be found in <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/tag/Toshiba/">Toshiba</a>'s homescreen UI or can be added -- the video demos some of the options for making changes and panel color choices if the default isn't tickling your fancy. This handset is thin and light and makes the iPhone we used for some scale pics look positively chubby -- it's like having a PSP-sized display in your pocket. The 4.1-inch Regza-inspired screen is clear, the resistive touchscreen is typical hit and miss with fingertips, video and gaming are fast on the 1GHz Snapdragon processor and look gorgeous. You know, if Toshiba sees fit to add some 3G bands other than the 2100MHz included in the first effort, we could easily see this living -- almost unnoticed -- in our pockets. We're still pretty far out from the rumored summer launch of the TG01 so we're expecting to see some changes between now and then, and we also have some concerns about battery life while driving a screen like this, but for now, wow. It's under ten millimeters thin, rocks a GPS and a 4.1-inch display, and with that 1GHz <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Snapdragon/">Snapdragon</a> chip under the proverbial hood, we're counting on some serious multimedia action. Now that we're gearing up for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/MWC2009/">MWC</a>, ALK Technologies has just announced that it's making the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/02/13/copilot-satellite-navigation-for-wm6-launched/">CoPilot Live GPS nav system</a> available for the guy. The app promises full-featured turn-by-turn navigation and both 3D and 2D widescreen map views, and real-time services like traffic alerts, fuel price info, and weather conditions. Additionally, this bad boy supports safety camera alerts, with free database updates available for download directly to the phone. Specifics -- such as price and release date -- to be announced.<br /></div>
