<p>The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/21/microsoft-unveils-its-next-game-console-the-tktk/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Xbox One</a> is a big deal for consoles, but Microsoft just made a massive content announcement at today's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/21/microsoft-xbox-event-liveblog/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">reveal event</a> -- a live-action <em>Halo</em> TV series. As if the existence of such a television show weren't enough, it turns out that 343 Industries is teaming up with renowned moviemaker Steven Spielberg to bring the world of Master Chief to life in serial form. Spielberg will be the executive producer and the show will provide "exclusive interactive Xbox One content," whatever that means. Unfortunately, neither Microsoft nor Mr. Spielberg are telling when the show will actually be available for your eyeballs to view, but it is, most assuredly an <em>actual thing</em>. And just knowing that the follow-up to <em>Halo: Forward Unto Dawn</em> is coming is enough, right?</p>

<p>It's still a long way from the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/08/aereo-more-cities-2013/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">22 cities</a> it hopes to launch in this year, but Aereo's expansion of its live TV streaming service beyond its NYC base is now moving steadily ahead. It's set to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/23/aereo-boston-may-15/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">go live in Boston</a> tomorrow, and the company has confirmed today that Atlanta will be next in line on June 17th. That's when the service will be available in the city to those who've pre-registered, with everyone else invited to sign up on June 24th. As you may recall from yesterday, the company's also slightly <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/13/aereo-live-tv-boston/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">revised its pricing plans</a> ahead of the expansion, with the $12 per month rate now netting you 60 hours of storage instead of 40, while the $8 rate remains the same as before at 20 hours. You can find all the specifics on the Atlanta rollout in the press release after the break.</p>

<p>Twitter would really, really like to make <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/02/05/twitter-acquires-bluefin-labs-social-tv/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">ad-driven TV experiences</a> central parts of its service, and it just confirmed that laser-like focus through an expanded deal with ESPN. The sports broadcaster will soon show in-tweet video highlights of football, soccer and the X Games; Twitter, in turn, gets a guaranteed volume of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/30/twitter-ads-opens-to-us-users/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">promoted tweets</a> to parallel ads inside the videos themselves. While we're not looking forward to the new marketing pitches when they surface in the year ahead, we'll be happy if we can catch more replays without losing our place in the social stream.</p>

<p class="p1 image-container" style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/13/aereo-live-tv-boston/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img alt="Aereo live TV service refreshes pricing plans, expands to Boston on May 15th" data-src-height="432" data-src-width="619" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/05/aereo-tv.jpg" /></a></p>

<p class="p1">We've been eager to try out <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/02/aereo-new-pricing-plan/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Aereo's TV streaming service</a>, which sends live broadcast content to devices over the internet. But the service has had at least one significant flaw: it's only available to subscribers in the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/14/aereo-tv-broadcast-streaming-service-nyc-launch/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">New York City area</a>. That will soon change when it heads to Boston on <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/23/aereo-boston-may-15/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">May 15th</a>, though, and the streaming service has now announced that the rates will be changing slightly then as well. The base plan, which includes unlimited streaming and 20 hours of DVR storage, will remain unchanged at $8 per month, but the $12 monthly tariff will include 60 hours of storage, compared to the 40 hours Aereo previously offered.</p>

<p class="p1">And that's it -- no more $1 daily or $80 yearly plans, though that latter option is still available until the new structure goes live on Wednesday. The service is supported on iOS, Chrome, IE 9, Firefox, Safari, Opera and Roku devices, though those geographic restrictions keep the access pool quite limited. New Yorkers can take the service for a spin today, Bostonians will get the green light come May 15th, and the rest of you can see what you're missing in the demo video after the break.</p>

<p>You can't always be camped out in front of your TV for the big soccer (or "footie") match. Thankfully, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/27/bein-sport-usa-soccer-channel-comes-to-comcast-directv-and-dish/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">beIN Sport</a> is hopping on the streaming bandwagon and, starting today, will offer 24/7 access on both PCs and mobile phones though Play. Of course, like many of these properties making the leap from TV to the web, beIN Sport Play requires that you have an active subscription through a cable or satellite provider. At first only <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/25/espn2-espnu-and-espn-buzzer-beater-now-available-online-for-tim/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Time Warner</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/30/bright-house-tv-app-brings-rebranded-time-warner-cable-tv-to-the/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Bright House</a> subscribers will have access, though other networks will come online over the next few months. Play will also offer unique features such as email alerts 30 minutes before the beginning of an event and the ability to watch alternative streams and un-broadcast matches. Now, if only beIN could convince Americans to care about soccer in the first place...</p>

<p>NHK's 8K <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/08/nhk-8k-super-hi-vision-120hz-camera/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Super Hi-Vision</a> is an extremely bandwidth-heavy format -- so much so that earlier tests used <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/30/first-super-hi-vision-broadcast-from-uk-to-japan-is-one-for-the/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">gigabit-class internet</a> links rather than traditional TV broadcasting methods. Thankfully, both the broadcaster and Mitsubishi have developed an encoder that could keep data rates down to Earth. The unassuming metal box (above) is the first to squeeze 8K video into the extra-dense <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/27/itu-approves-h265-video-format/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">H.265</a> (HEVC) format, cutting the bandwidth usage in half versus H.264. Its parallel processing is quick enough to encode video in real time, too, which should please NHK and other networks producing live TV. We'll still need faster-than-usual connections (and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/30/panasonics-145-inch-8k-pdp-eyes-on-video/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">gigantic TVs</a>) to make 8K an everyday reality, but that goal should now be more realistic.</p>

<p>Quad-core smart TVs? Move over, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/20/samsung-s9-uhd-tv-pricing/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Samsung</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/07/haier-hdtv-roku-hxt-qualcomm-snapdragon-s4/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Haier</a>, because another company's now joining the party. At a press event in Beijing yesterday, Chinese video content provider LeTV announced its first TV series dubbed "Super TV." Despite the cheesy name, there are a handful of big names behind it: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/02/18/kai-fu-lee-invites-30-million-weibo-followers-twitter/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Kai-Fu Lee's</a> Innovation Works, Qualcomm, Foxconn and Sharp. The last two aren't surprising considering Foxconn's parent company, Hon Hai, is an <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/honhai,sharp/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">investor</a> of Sharp as well as LeTV. It's also worth noting, though, that Hon Hai already has a deal with RadioShack to make and sell a 60-inch TV, the RS60-V1, in China since January.</p>

<p>The flagship X60 (pictured above at GMIC Beijing) features an aluminum alloy body that encases Sharp's 10th-generation 60-inch 1080p panel -- as featured on the RadioShack TV -- with 120Hz 3D, on top of a 1.7GHz quad-core <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/05/qualcomm-snapdragon-s4-cpu-family-expands-past-phones-to-hdtvs/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Snapdragon S4 Prime</a> MPQ8064 (with 2GB of RAM and Adreno 320 graphics), dual-band WiFi and S/PDIF optical output. You can also add an optional 2.4GHz gyroscopic remote control and a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/primesense/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">PrimeSense</a> motion sensor just for giggles. But most importantly, LeTV now streams over 2,000 TV apps as well as some 90,000 TV episodes and 5,000 movies for free (LeTV claims to own the rights to 95 percent of the video content). So, the &yen;6,999 or $1,140 price tag seems a steal for the X60. There will also be a 39-inch 1080p (likely 2D only), dual-core S40 model priced at &yen;1,999 or about $330, and both TVs will be available by the end of June.<span><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/letv-x60-with-snapdragon-s4-prime-hands-on/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">LeTV Super TV X60 and S40</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/letv-x60-with-snapdragon-s4-prime-hands-on/5867428?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/05/letv-2013-05-08_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/letv-x60-with-snapdragon-s4-prime-hands-on/5867826?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/05/letv-s40_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/letv-x60-with-snapdragon-s4-prime-hands-on/5867420?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/05/letv-2013-05-08-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/letv-x60-with-snapdragon-s4-prime-hands-on/5867421?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/05/letv-2013-05-08-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/letv-x60-with-snapdragon-s4-prime-hands-on/5867422?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/05/letv-2013-05-08-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></span></p>

<p class="p1">Following a tweak in how Nielsen <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/02/21/nielsen-ratings-expand-definition-of-tv-households-to-include-in/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">defines homes with TVs</a>, it's noted a reversal in the two-year decline of TV household numbers. This adjustment has apparently increased <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/nielsen/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Nielsen</a>'s estimate of TV homes by 1.2 percent, up to 115.6 million. The definition now extends to include viewers that take their TV through broadband internet, with qualifying households having both the high-speed connection and "at least one operable TV/monitor with the ability to deliver video." This new wording encompasses anyone who watches channels through their Xbox, Apple TV and other data-based services. Nielsen will begin including these extra homes in its sampling starting in September, but we're still waiting to see what it does with its wider metrics for both <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/22/groupm-and-nielsen-work-to-combine-online-and-tv-metrics/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">streaming viewers</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/17/nielsen-twitter-tv-rating/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">social networks</a>.</p>

<p>Samsung's desire for deep integration of TV services was painstakingly obvious when it unveiled the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/24/samsung-galaxy-s-4-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Galaxy S 4's</a> WatchON feature. However, that may prove to be just the tip of the televisual iceberg: it's buying MOVL, the developer of Samsung's own <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/08/samsung-swipeit-app-airplay-competition/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">SwipeIt</a> media sharing as well as the MOVL Connect Platform and KontrolTV. We don't know exactly how the two sides will mesh, but MOVL expects to merge its connected TV savvy with the "scale and innovation" of its new overseer, according to a company statement at <em>TechCrunch</em>. The only safe prediction is that existing support for generic Google TVs and iOS will likely take a back seat.</p>

<p class="image-container" style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/02/loewe-reference-id-tv-hits-the-uk-in-july/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img alt="Loewe Reference ID TV hits the UK in July with full customization and a 1TB DVR" data-src-height="411" data-src-width="619" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/05/loewe-reference-id-ifa-2012-1367507626.jpg" /></a></p>

<p>Loewe has staked its success in the TV market on <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/31/loewe-individual-selection-tvs-if-you-care-more-about-the-col/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">personalized designs</a>, and it's taking that concept to its logical extreme with the upcoming Reference ID. First shown at IFA last year, the LCD set is now due to reach the UK in July with progressively wilder customization options. Owners will only have a choice of covers for the built-in 160W speaker at first, they'll get frame selections later in the summer, and full customization of materials and patterns this fall -- if they want a set housed in leather and gold, it can happen. Conformists might still be happy with the Reference ID between its 3D-ready 400Hz panel, media streaming and a dual-channel DVR with 1TB of space. Loewe's adaptable design won't be cheap for discerning Brits, however: 40-, 46- and 55-inch variants will respectively cost &pound;4,500, &pound;5,500 and &pound;6,500 ($7,007, $8,564 and $10,121), and that's before applying a personal touch.</p>

<p>According to the <em>Wall Street Journal</em>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/nielsen/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Nielsen's</a> TV ratings are about to get some company, with a system that covers <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/02/21/nielsen-ratings-expand-definition-of-tv-households-to-include-in/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">internet watchers</a>. A "Nielsen Digital Program Ratings" pilot program will debut with participation from N<span>BC, Fox, ABC, Univision, Discovery and A&amp;E, tracking the viewership of streaming video they post on their websites. AOL (parent company of Engadget) is also reported to be participating, as the networks compare the data to their internal statistics before the ratings system gets a wider rollout. Of course, even the system they're testing will only jump so far into the future -- while it will track viewing on computers, it's still leaving out phones and tablets. Networks want to track anywhere content is viewed -- one of the issues we've been told they have with tech like <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/01/aereo-court-victory-partnership-talks-att-dish-directv/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Aereo</a> or <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/17/twc-tv-ios-app-update-out-of-home-verizon/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">TWC TV</a> -- to sell ads against it, we'll wait for more details to see if they'll have any success extending the current model to other types of screens.</span></p>

The company is about to broaden its horizons considerably -- it now plans to deploy LG Cloud to more than 40 additional countries before the end of May. While the electronics giant hasn't outlined its plans on a nation-by-nation basis, it's planning a truly worldwide expansion that should include Asia, Europe and Latin America. As of now, Boxee's live TV recording service is up and running in the San Francisco Bay Area in beta form; owners just need to update their firmware to start uploading shows.
