This year's EVO Championship Series was bonkers, you guys. Not only did MVC legend Justin Wong get perfected into third place during the Marvel vs Capcom 3 grand finals, but The Beast took a bewildering fourth place in Super Street Fighter 4: Arcade Edition, ending two consecutive years of first-place victories. This was also the first EVO ever to feature a Mortal Kombat game, which is a major victory for both NetherRealm Studios and the MK kommunity. Historically, Mortal Kombat titles have never been considered balanced or polished enough to participate in high-level tournaments, and EVO's seal of approval goes a long way in legitimizing Mortal Kombat in the eyes of the fighting community. Check out the highlights reel above for some incredible displays of skill, dedication, and heart, and be sure to peep the full list of winners and finalists after the break.

  • Tekken live action movie trailer is so bad it's good

Turning fighting games into movies is something that we actually appreciate quite a bit. These movies end up being so bad, they come all the way back around the spectrum to good. Films like Street Fighter, DOA: Dead or Alive and The King of Fighters will always have a special place in our hearts -- and now, with this latest trailer for the Blu-ray and DVD release (slated for July 19), it would seem Tekken: The Movie is on track to be on that list.

  • Namco Bandai climbs out of the red with pair of million-sellers

For the fiscal year ending March 31, 2011, Namco Bandai's "Content" division -- which includes both home-console and arcade games, in addition to music and video products -- increased sales just enough to post a modest operating income of ¥3.09 billion ($38.5 million). In turn, the company turned around from the previous fiscal year's net loss to scrounge up ¥3.78 billion ($46.9 million) in profit. The publisher put out 88 games (including individual iterations of multiplatform titles) across six systems, selling roughly 20.9 million software units in the 12-month period. Its efforts were focused primarily on handheld releases, with 30 games on DS -- plus three more for the 3DS launch -- and 29 for PSP. The company's two bestselling titles during the fiscal year, however, were for home consoles: 2009's still-kicking Tekken 6 accounted for 1.15 million unit sales on PS3 and Xbox 360 in the US alone, and Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm 2 sold 1.1M units worldwide on those same consoles, according to the company's financial highlights document [PDF]. While Naruto performed above initial expectations, Enslaved failed to muster numbers in line with even the revised sales forecast reset by Namco Bandai in November. Ninja Theory's action-adventure had to settle for 730,000 units sold across PS3 and 360, falling short of the hoped-for 800K mark. As for Splatterhouse and Majin, the publisher did not report their individual sales, as both titles' performances seemingly fell below 400K units (Namco Bandai's cutoff line for "Main Game Titles," as they appear in the financial highlights report). For the current fiscal year, which began April 1, Namco Bandai forecasts continued gains resulting in ¥8 billion in profit. The publisher has plans to release 90 games during the period, including 26 titles bound for PS3. Props to anyone that can name three of them! (No googling.)

  • Tekken 6 leads Namco Bandai's Q1 sales

    08.07.2010

The North American release of Tekken 6 was the brightest spot on Namco Bandai's game release calendar for its fiscal Q1 (which ended June 30). The fighting title sold 1.07 million copies in the US in that quarter, giving a clue as to why Namco Bandia would be so eager to collaborate with Capcom on Street Fighter x Tekken -- it means more Tekken games. The next best-selling game in the quarter was the third Taiko Drum Master game on DS, which sold 170,000 copies in Japan; Ben 10 Alien Force, a title published by subsidiary D3 Publisher, sold 110,000 in the US and Europe and the latest Super Robot Wars for DS sold 110,000 in Japan. Overall, the "content" division brought in ¥32.9 billion ($385 million) in net sales in the quarter, up from ¥20.2 billion last year. How is it up with lowered sales? Well, this year, the visual and musical content divisions were integrated with the game division. So it's kind of a technicality. It only lost ¥619 million in operating losses, compared to last Q1's ¥4.1 billion

  • Namco Bandai game segment records annual losses ... but Ben 10 sales soar!

Namco Bandai's "Content" segment, which combines its video game software and arcade machine products, recorded ¥6.86 billion ($74.68 million) in operating losses for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2010. The division proved the most costly for the company, which also runs a successful "Toys & Hobby" segment, in addition to several other businesses. Overall, Namco Bandai suffered ¥29.08 billion ($317.28 million) in net losses for fiscal 2010, but the company forecasts a modest turnaround in net income of ¥4.5 billion ($49.1 million) for the current fiscal year. The games segment, which this fiscal year includes the previously separate "Visual and Music Content" division, is forecast to post ¥3.5 billion ($38.19 million) in operating income over the next four quarters; aided by an estimated 90 game releases, which are predicted to bring in ¥88 billion ($960 million) in sales. In fiscal 2010, Namco Bandai software sales, which encompassed 86 titles (or 225, if you're counting localized versions), totaled 22.737 million units and ¥77 billion ($840 million); with portable games accounting for a significant 9.701 million units sold. Multiplatform versions of Ben 10 Alien Force and its sequel, Ben 10 Alien Force: Vilgax Attacks, in the US and Europe during the fiscal year, combined to sell 1.89 million copies alone. The console version of Tekken 6 was the publisher's only title to move more units than either of those two Ben 10 games. A third Ben 10 title, Protector of the Earth, added another 610,000 units sold in the fiscal year. Across all Namco Bandai products, "Ben 10" the franchise racked up ¥17.9 billion ($195.3 million) in sales. Not quite Mobile Suit Gundman numbers (¥34.6 billion), but still. Head past the break for the complete list of Namco Bandai's top-10 bestsellers and sales distribution by platform.

  • Namco Bandai suffers losses, cuts staff

    02.02.2010

It's a tough economic time the world over, but Namco Bandai appears to really be taking it on the Heihachin according to a report from Edge. During the nine months ending on Dec. 31, 2009, the company posted a $129.05 million loss, compared to a $99.5 million profit during the same period in 2008. Perhaps it should come as no surprise that the company has also announced layoffs, or rather a "group restart plan" that translates to 650 staffers (about 10 percent of the company) losing their jobs. We hope Namco finds a way back to profitability, but when some of its biggest titles for 2010 include a new entry in a forgettable series (thus far), a troubled relaunch of a fan favorite and a promising game that disappeared almost as soon as it was announced, we're not convinced the recovery process will be a quick one.

Good news if you're sick of playing Tekken 6 online purely for the purpose of beating up on your friends -- come January 18, you can beat up on computer-controlled opponents together instead, thanks to an incoming patch. The title update for PS3 and Xbox 360 will add online co-op to the Scenario Campaign of the game, along with voice chat. (You know, for working out those incredibly deep strategies -- "I'll punch the guy on the left!") Mokujin's AI has also been tweaked for online versus play, causing his fighting style to change every round. He won't voice chat with you, though. Sorry.

This post is for you then, as Amazon has positively slashed the price of the bundle on both PS3 and 360 version, knocking them down to a paltry $78. Seventy-eight bones! That's only $18 bucks more than your average game and it includes the Tekken 6 Hori arcade stick to boot. If you, or the digital pugilist in your life, haven't picked this up yet, it probably won't get much cheaper than this. [Via Dealzon]

A free update, launching on November 26, hopes to end the woes Tekken 6 players have encountered in the online King of Iron Fists Tournament. The update should improve connectivity between players and will add selectable search priorities for ranked matches. Namco also aims to improve the responsiveness of button input and will add a cancel option for the first few seconds of a match should you disapprove of your opponent's signal strength. Or, in our case, should you find they're using a super cheap character like Devil Jin. Stop it!

If Namco releases more Tekken 6 DLC, it will be free

Producer Katsuhiro Harada commented to UK.PlayStation.com that more Tekken 6 content is likely to be on the way via DLC, adding to the retailer-exclusive Cardboard Tube Samurai outfit. But we can't groan about Namco Bandai using DLC for the popular fighter as a cash machine, because the company doesn't intend to charge for it. Harada said there was a "strong possibility" of additional downloadable content for the game -- possibly for the PSP version as well, since he didn't specify. "However, even if we were to do so, it would be free to the end user." Of course, this is the same company that released paid Star Wars DLC for Soul Calibur IV after the director said there wouldn't be. So don't go empty out your Tekken 6 DLC fund just yet. %Gallery-70500% [Via Siliconera]

For this week's Swag Saturday, we're giving out a copy of Tekken 6 for the Xbox 360 to one lucky commenter who tells us which fictitious holiday character (think: Santa, the Easter Bunny) they'd like to beat up the most, and with which Tekken 6 character they'd like to do so with. • Bayonetta launch continues Platinum's winning streak

Bayonetta had a strong debut in Japan this week -- on PS3. The PS3 version of Platinum Games' action title sold 135,242 copies in its first week, topping the Media Create sales chart. The Xbox version had a good launch for an Xbox 360 game in Japan, at 64,325 copies. It wasn't a Resident Evil 5-size launch on either console, though the Xbox 360 version came close, and it wasn't a Wii Sports Resort-level sensation, but it should be enough to be considered a successful launch. This is Platinum Games's second launch in Japan, and it's the second to debut at the top of the charts. Infinite Space on DS took the winning position back in June, with a comparatively modest 38,394 copies. MadWorld, Platinum's other game, has yet to be released in Japan. The number two and three spots on Media Create's chart are also occupied by new games: Four Warriors of Light: Final Fantasy Gaiden, the new Final Fantasy for DS made by Matrix Software, and Tekken 6.

  • Tekken 6 online patch in the works, says Namco

Those of you taking your King of the Iron Fist Tournament fighters to the internet have been experiencing some major issues, notably: when trying to compete online in any sort of meaningful way, you're met with acute, game-ending connectivity issues. Namco recognized that today and issued a response, stating, "To improve the online game experience for players ... Namco Bandai games is developing a downloadable update which will be available as soon as it has passed rigorous testing procedures." Unfortunately, no date for the patch has been given, though the publisher does add, "This is separate from the online co-op Scenario Campaign mode update." We've pestered Namco for more details on exactly what the patch will aim to fix and when we might hear more about it but, until that time, know this: something is being fixed at some point.

  • Rumor: Tekken 6 PSP adds Story modes for Lars and Alisa

There may be extra incentive to check out the PSP version of Tekken 6, as Siliconera reports the handheld port will feature story modes for newcomers Lars and Alisa. The news originally fought its way onto the net via online retailer Rakuten, but the page has since been pulled, with no new listing surfacing. The PSP port will also apparently replace the console version's Scenario Mode with Gold Rush Mode, where each fight earns the player money to customize their character. Many of you may have noticed the game failed to meet its October 27 release date, just as we thought it would -- several retailers now peg down the US release for November 29, while it looks like Japan will have to wait until January 14, 2010.

  • Soccer reigns supreme once again in UK sales chart; DJ Hero breaks in at 20

Another football game came out in the UK last week and, once again, it came in first place in the region's weekly software sales charts. This time around, the game was Football Manager 2010, in which soccer isn't played, but rather, managed. That's far too boring a concept to discuss further, so instead, let's move to the other big debuts: Wii Fit Plus, for instance, came in second place for the week, which is -- wait a minute. Doesn't Wii Fit Plus have a "Soccer Heading" minigame? Oh, Nintendo. You know exactly what you're doing. Episodes From Liberty City and Tekken 6 also made a splash during their launch week, garnering sixth and eighth place finishes, respectively. However, DJ Hero seems to be following its expected, slow-starting sales trajectory, debuting at twentieth place in last week's chart. We've got a small suggestion for FreeStyle Games to improve the rhythm title's performance in the UK: Needs moar Dizzee Rascal.
