It may seem like there's an abundance of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/topics/robots+all">robot news</a> lately, but we're just trying to <strike>please our </strike><strike>mechanical overlords</strike> deliver the latest in gadget and technology news. What we've got here is an <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Arduino/">Arduino</a>-based robo-gripper that serves only to move around and use its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/3Dprinter/">3D printed</a> claws to grab tiny objects that we'd otherwise be too lazy to pick up ourselves. The robot, infused with a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/TexasInstruments/">Texas Instruments</a> CC1110 dev kit, is controlled using an accelerometer-based <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/23/ti-introduces-the-ez430-chronos-development-platform-and-spor/">Chronos watch</a> and can move in all directions by simply tilting the timepiece. If you want to take a gander at this little guy in action, check out the video past the break -- it's always warming to see humans having <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/15/gesture-controlled-robot-arm-enables-civilizations-most-meta-hi/">the upper hand</a> against the machine.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/30/watch-controlled-robo-tot-grasps-small-objects-the-meaning-of-l/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Watch-controlled robo-tot grasps small objects, the meaning of life (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/30/watch-controlled-robo-tot-grasps-small-objects-the-meaning-of-l/">Watch-controlled robo-tot grasps small objects, the meaning of life (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 30 Mar 2011 18:53:00 EST. To take John McEnroe's famous quote badly out of context, you <em>cannot</em> be serious about video recording without giving your devices a nice big display for videographers to monitor their recordings through. Sony's clearly in agreement and has today revealed the CLM-V55, a 5-inch clip-on unit for its interchangeable lens cameras, that provides WVGA resolution, tilt / swivel adjustments, and color peaking plus pixel magnification to make sure focus is just how you like it. The primary beneficiaries of this would be those delightful <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/24/sony-alpha-a55-and-a33-hands-on/">A33 and A55</a> siblings, which strive to combine the fast autofocus of a camcorder with the image quality of a DSLR, along with the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/15/sony-nex-vg10-hd-camcorder-preview/">NEX-VG10</a>, an all-out camcorder that can nonetheless exchange its lenses and even exploit Alpha-mount glass via an adapter. You can see it outfitted with the V55 after the break, right next to the full press release. Launch is expected in March at an as yet unannounced price.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/13/sony-outs-clm-v55-video-monitor-for-interchangeable-lens-cameras/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sony outs CLM-V55 video monitor for interchangeable lens cameras</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/13/sony-outs-clm-v55-video-monitor-for-interchangeable-lens-cameras/">Sony outs CLM-V55 video monitor for interchangeable lens cameras</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 13 Jan 2011 01:33:00 EST. Even though games like <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/09/app-review-infinity-blade-iphone/"><em>Infinity Blade</em></a> can be great fun on the iPhone, there's no getting around the fact that touchscreen-centric, buttonless devices don't offer the best gaming ergonomics. A modding project gone horribly right, however, might just fix that right up for all of us. Shane Wighton set out to build a robot to try and beat his favorite iPhone game, replete with a webcam and an Arduino setup, but in the process of doing so he "just realized that [he'd] made a mechanism to play tilt based phone games with a joystick." Yes indeedy, one of the most awesome DIY gaming accessories was built by fluke as much as design. See it revolutionizing mobile gaming just after the break.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/12/iphone-meets-arduino-tilt-joystick-for-mobile-games-results-vi/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>iPhone meets Arduino, tilt joystick for mobile games results (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/12/iphone-meets-arduino-tilt-joystick-for-mobile-games-results-vi/">iPhone meets Arduino, tilt joystick for mobile games results (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 12 Jan 2011 02:09:00 EST. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Autostereoscopic/">Autostereoscopic</a> (read: glasses-free) 3D screens sound like all the rage, but <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/25/new-glasses-free-3d-tech-uses-per-pixel-prisms-for-zero-crosstal/">the narrow zones</a> from which you can comfortably view their images have made them a dubious proposition. That's not stopping Toshiba Mobile Display, however, which recently came up with a novel idea for a self-adjusting display. By sticking a six-axis accelerometer in this 12.1-inch slate, the company can tilt the tablet's viewing angle as the tablet itself is tilted, letting viewers effectively look <em>around</em> 3D objects on screen, using software algorithms rather than the fancy lens-and-camera assembly <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/14/microsofts-new-lens-tracks-your-face-steers-3d-images-to-your/">that Microsoft's been prototyping</a>. Toshiba figures it'll make a splash with e-tailers -- because who doesn't want to play with a prospective purchase in 3D space? -- but is mostly talking up the tech as a way to extend the limited 3D viewing angles of these sorts of displays. But enough jabber: see it for yourself after the break.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/12/toshibas-new-glasses-free-3d-display-tilts-images-and-viewing/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Toshiba's new glasses-free 3D display tilts images and viewing angles your way (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/12/toshibas-new-glasses-free-3d-display-tilts-images-and-viewing/">Toshiba's new glasses-free 3D display tilts images and viewing angles your way (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sun, 12 Dec 2010 16:37:00 EST. The iOS App Store might already have its fair share of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/14/app-review-the-incident/">addictive</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/24/reckless-racing-review-iphone/">compelling</a> games on offer, but when John Carmack comes calling with his latest <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/12/carmack-blows-minds-with-id-softwares-rage-running-on-iphone-a/">megatextured</a> shoot-em-up, you've got to sit up and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/08/epic-games-id-software-show-off-jaw-dropping-new-iphone-games/">pay attention</a>. <em>Rage HD: Mutant Bash TV</em> isn't so much a full-fledged game in its own right as it is a teaser for the forthcoming <em>Rage</em> FPS for the PC, and yet even in its pretty limited running time, it managed to woo and thrill us with its visceral gameplay and arresting visuals. It's easily the best-looking game we've yet seen on a mobile device and provides a fine demonstration of just how far Apple's hardware -- on the iPhone 4, iPad, and fourth-gen iPod touch -- can be pushed when some appropriately adroit hands are at the graphical controls. But, of course, games are supposed to be fun to play, not just to look at, so why not join us after the break to see how well <em>Rage HD</em> handles its mutant-bashing duties?<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/rage-hd-screenshots/">Rage HD screenshots</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/rage-hd-screenshots/#3590847"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/11/eng10v111980007-copy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/rage-hd-screenshots/#3590874"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/11/eng10v111980037-copy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/rage-hd-screenshots/#3590882"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/11/eng10v111980045-copy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/rage-hd-screenshots/#3590842"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/11/eng10v111980001-copy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/rage-hd-screenshots/#3590843"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/11/eng10v111980002-copy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/19/rage-hd-review-iphone/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>App review: Rage HD (iPhone)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/19/rage-hd-review-iphone/">App review: Rage HD (iPhone)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 19 Nov 2010 14:47:00 EST. <div style="text-align: left;">Meanwhile, in the Netherlands... Engine Software has developed a hitherto yet undisclosed method of motion sensitivity for the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/NintendoDSi/">Nintendo DSi</a> (which we're guessing utilizes the camera). That got your attention, right? Well, wait'll you get a load of this: the company has been kind enough to try the thing out on a game of Tilt -- on <em>video</em>. According to our friends at <em>Joystiq</em>, the company's currently working on a DSiWare title that incorporates the technique. See for yourself after the break.</div>

AT&amp;T's official press materials might coyly say that the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/05/htc-pure-and-tilt-2-bring-windows-mobile-6-5-to-atandt/">HTC Tilt 2 will launch "in the coming weeks,"</a> but we just noticed that an official Windows Mobile 6.5 PR blast we got from Microsoft lists Blue's take on the <a href="http://engadget.com/tag/touchpro2">Touch Pro2</a> as launching October 18. Sounds about right, we'd say -- anyone planning to grab one?<br /> <br /> <strong>Update:</strong> We were just sent an internal AT&amp;T memo that says the Tilt 2 is actually being stocked and sold to business customers as of today, but that it won't go widely on sale until the 18th. So, our question stands, with an addendum -- anyone planning on pretending to a businessperson today in order to grab one?<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/htc/" rel="tag">HTC</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/atandt/" rel="tag">ATT</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/08/atandts-htc-tilt-2-coming-october-18/">AT&amp;T's HTC Tilt 2 coming October 18? This "pre-launch" list of upcoming AT&amp;T phones leaked out today, and it's pretty interesting -- in addition to the BlackBerry 9700, it also features the illusory Garmin-Asus <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/nuvifoneg60">n&uuml;vifone G60</a>, which finally looks like it'll be <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/07/garmin-asus-nuvifone-finally-coming-to-america-in-q4-or-so-they/">coming to the US</a> just a short 18 months after first being announced. Other notables include the HTC Tilt 2 and something called the HTC Pure, which Boy Genius Report says may be a variant of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/snap">Snap</a>. No <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/att,android">Android</a> or <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/att,webos">webOS</a> on this list, sadly, but hey -- the n&uuml;vifone is coming. It's one thing to see a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/mondi/">Samsung Mondi</a> and just imagine how sweet it'd feel between your palms, surfing on the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/21/clear-wimax-goes-live-in-las-vegas-samsung-mondi-ships-to-take/">blazing WiMAX superhighway</a> whilst providing an almost dangerous level of satisfaction. It's another to see just how chunky / slim / ostentatiously lofty it is when sized up against its greatest competition. The good folks over at <em>Pocketables</em> took the time to disconnect for a few brief moments in order to photograph the 4G-capable MID alongside a few other mobile internet devices, smartphones, UMPCs and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/26/sonys-mylo-2-only-available-in-refurbished-form-is-the-end-n/">defunct wannabes</a>. Heck, there's even a side-by-side with a stapler. Yeah, it's a can't miss piece, and it's all there for the taking in the read link.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handhelds/" rel="tag">Handhelds</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/07/samsungs-wimax-packin-mondi-sized-up-against-brothers-cousins/">Samsung's WiMAX-packin' Mondi sized up against brothers, cousins and enemies</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 07 Aug 2009 07:13:00 EST. <ul>
<li>Pantech's SKY division has <a href="http://translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&amp;tl=en&amp;u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.mobile-review.com%2Ffullnews%2Fmain%2F2009%2FJuly%2F15.shtml%2325174">announced</a> the IM-S480S "Tilt" flip for the South Korean market to be offered through carrier SK Telecom. It's a fairly ordinary phone -- 2 megapixel camera, microSD expansion -- but it apparently gets its name from its curved halves (how that evokes a name like "Tilt," we're not exactly sure) and features a trick LED bar above the keypad that can be used to indicate download progress and the like.</li>
<li>Samsung has <a href="http://hk.samsungmobile.com/ENG/footer/press/pressReleasesView.do?pressNo=2002">rolled out</a> a so-called Elegant Edition of its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/S7350/">S7350</a> slider in Hong Kong. It's pink and comes with a quilted pink leather pouch, so... you know, you'd better really be into pink. It also features customized "smart seasonal wallpaper" that'll change based on seasons and calendar events. [Via <a href="http://www.unwiredview.com/2009/07/15/samsung-ultra-s-elegant-edition-launched-in-hong-kong/">Unwired View</a>]</li>

We wouldn't recommend speculating too much here, but a patent Apple filed back in October 2007 has surfaced, describing a "movement-based interfaces for personal media device." If that's not enough of an explanation, in a nutshell it's for interacting with a device by tilting and shaking. Chances are this is just for accelerometer-based commands like switching to landscape, steering virtual go-carts, and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/17/iphone-finally-gets-copy-and-paste/">undo</a> -- but hey, if the gang at Cupertino devise a way to control an iPhone entirely by waggle, we'll be more than happy to witness a demonstration.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.unwiredview.com/2009/04/02/movement-gestures-in-iphone-os-40-or-50/">Unwired View</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/apple/" rel="tag">Apple</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/03/apple-patents-movement-based-gestures-for-shaking-rattling-and/">Apple patents movement-based gestures for shaking, rattling, and rolling with your portable devices</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 03 Apr 2009 23:02:00 EST. With <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/28/stewart-filmscreens-media-decor-covers-yours-flat-panel-with-ar/">Stewart Filmscreen</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/29/omnimount-chucks-out-motorized-flat-panel-mount-of-its-own/">OmniMount</a> doling out all new motorized mounts for CEDIA, we reckoned it was only a matter of time before Sanus hollered "me too!" Right on cue, the VisionMount LT25 has been revealed, boasting aluminum alloy rails and high-grade ABS decorative end caps, a weight of just 3.5-pounds and post-installation height and leveling adjustments. The device can handle HDTVs from 30- to 60-inches in size (up to 175-pounds), and best of all, the $219.99 price tag won't sting too awfully bad when picking one up in black or silver.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/diy/" rel="tag">DIY</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/misc/" rel="tag">Misc</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/displays/" rel="tag">Displays</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/other-hardware/" rel="tag">Other hardware</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/others/" rel="tag">Others</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/09/01/sanus-joins-the-tilting-wall-mount-crowd-with-visionmount-lt25/">Sanus joins the tilting wall mount crowd with VisionMount LT25</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 01 Sep 2008 04:27:00 EST. It <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/21/official-windows-mobile-6-1-update-for-kaiser-leaks-out/">leaked</a> ages ago, but the Windows Mobile 6.1 upgrade for your beloved Tilt is now ever so slightly more legit now that it's made an official appearance on HTC's support site. The big draws here are <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/VideoShare/">Video Share</a> support, reconfigurability for the push-to-talk button, and all the other spoils that come with the WinMo 6.1 we know and love, tolerate, or hate, depending on your disposition.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.mobileburn.com/news.jsp?Id=5171">MobileBurn</a> and <a href="http://www.wmexperts.com/articles/att_tilt_rom_update_go_get_it.html">WMExperts</a>, thanks to everyone who sent this in]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/software/" rel="tag">Software</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/htc/" rel="tag">HTC</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/atandt/" rel="tag">ATT</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/windows-mobile/" rel="tag">Windows Mobile</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/26/atandt-tilt-imbued-with-official-windows-mobile-6-1-update/">AT&amp;T Tilt imbued with official Windows Mobile 6.1 update</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 26 Aug 2008 15:44:00 EST. The good news: HTC's prepping to officially launch a Windows Mobile 6.1 update for its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/tytnii">TyTN II</a> any day (or week, or month) now. The better news: you can get it now. The bad news: although there are some <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/18/htc-cooking-up-faster-video-for-affected-devices-no-drivers-i/">video performance tweaks</a> in place, they aren't exactly revolutionary -- and it's still not true video acceleration. The worst news: AT&amp;T's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Tilt/">Tilt</a> update will apparently follow on at some nebulous point in the future. Got all that? So if you're lucky enough to be sporting an unbranded <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Kaiser/">Kaiser</a> of some sort, why wait? Grab the update from MoDaCo and let us know how it treats you.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/software/" rel="tag">Software</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/htc/" rel="tag">HTC</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/windows-mobile/" rel="tag">Windows Mobile</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/21/official-windows-mobile-6-1-update-for-kaiser-leaks-out/">Official Windows Mobile 6.1 update for Kaiser leaks out</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 21 May 2008 14:20:00 EST. <p>As the bar for really, <em>truly</em> ripping another product off gets ratcheted up, leave it to Awang to make sure it keeps pace. The A9000 handset makes no attempt to veil itself from being seen as the impostor that it truly is, featuring the same QWERTY keypad, general design and tilt-ability as the long-established <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2007/10/04/the-atandt-tilt-october-5-for-299-99/">AT&amp;T Tilt</a>. Judging by the looks of things, those not ashamed with carrying around a Class-A wannabe will find Windows Mobile ("or similar") under the hood, a T-Flash expansion slot, built-in camera and a lovely stylus for good measure. We've seen creativity get <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/20/keeping-it-real-fake-part-cxii-is-the-daxian-x999-the-ultimate/">slapped</a> in the face <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/10/keepin-it-real-fake-part-cx-game-joy-micro/">before</a>, but this is a bona fide low blow.<br /><br />[Thanks, Steve]</p>

As the bar for really, <em>truly</em> ripping another product off gets ratcheted up, leave it to Awang to make sure it keeps pace. The A9000 handset makes no attempt to veil itself from being seen as the impostor that it truly is, featuring the same QWERTY keypad, general design and tilt-ability as the long-established <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/04/the-atandt-tilt-october-5-for-299-99/">AT&amp;T Tilt</a>. Judging by the looks of things, those not ashamed with carrying around a Class-A wannabe will find Windows Mobile ("or similar") under the hood, a T-Flash expansion slot, built-in camera and a lovely stylus for good measure. We've seen creativity get <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/20/keeping-it-real-fake-part-cxii-is-the-daxian-x999-the-ultimate/">slapped</a> in the face <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/10/keepin-it-real-fake-part-cx-game-joy-micro/">before</a>, but this is a bona fide low blow.<br /><br />[Thanks, Steve]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/htc/" rel="tag">HTC</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/others/" rel="tag">Others</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/07/keepin-it-real-fake-part-cxvi-tilt-gets-shamelessly-aped/">Keepin' it real fake, part CXVI: Tilt gets shamelessly aped</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 07 Apr 2008 05:57:00 EST. For smartphone owners, firmware updates are like little Festivus presents: they're usually free to you, they're given to you by someone you love, and make your life just a little warmer and fuzzier. Alright, all three of those points are stretches, but come on, it's still just a little exciting, isn't it? AT&amp;T's mighty <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/04/the-atandt-tilt-october-5-for-299-99/">Tilt</a> has just been gifted with a new ROM that provides -- and we quote -- enhanced Bluetooth performance, DTMF tones on the QWERTY keyboard, improvements in overall performance and stability, and a newer Windows Mobile 6 AKU, this one versioned 0.4.4. Let us know how it goes, people!<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://mobilitysite.com/2008/02/htc-releases-rom-update-version-1625020/">Mobility Site</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/software/" rel="tag">Software</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/htc/" rel="tag">HTC</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/atandt/" rel="tag">ATT</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/windows-mobile/" rel="tag">Windows Mobile</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/15/htc-pushes-out-new-atandt-tilt-rom/">HTC pushes out new AT&amp;T Tilt ROM</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 15 Feb 2008 17:59:00 EST. It's pretty clear that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/22/htc-chimes-in-on-video-driver-controversy/">HTC's stance</a> on the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/19/driver-trouble-makes-angry-mobile-owners-rush-castle-htc-with-bu/">lack of ATI Imageon video drivers in recent devices</a> has caused quite a stir over here at the Mob, so we thought some of you would be interested in heading over to Engadget classic to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/23/poll-how-did-htc-mishandle-the-video-driver-controversy/">voice your opinions in poll form</a>. This seems to be a somewhat divisive issue, so your input would be greatly appreciated. In case you haven't been following all the drama over at Engadget Mobile, Taiwanese smartphone kingpin HTC is seeing a rather unexpected <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2008/01/19/driver-trouble-makes-angry-mobile-owners-rush-castle-htc-with-bu/">customer backlash</a> over sub-par video playback in recent devices employing Qualcomm's MSM7xxx chipsets -- apparently, handsets like the popular TyTN II and Touch Cruise were purposely shipped without drivers that would take advantage of the embedded ATI Imageon acceleration hardware. And now, instead of issuing a mea culpa or at least providing the drivers for a small fee, HTC has basically <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2008/01/22/htc-chimes-in-on-video-driver-controversy/">suggested in a recent statement</a> that consumers will need to upgrade to future products if they want "high-resolution video support." Obviously customers are outraged, with the statement only fueling further talk of a <a href="http://htcclassaction.org/">class action lawsuit</a>.<br /><br />We think it's time for the Engadget community at large to weigh in on this snowballing controversy: what (if anything) should HTC have done differently in order to maintain the proactive, customer-friendly image that it has up to this point been known for?<br /><br />

What can we say? The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/04/the-atandt-tilt-october-5-for-299-99/">Tilt</a>, like the Kaiser upon which it's based, is the ultimate execution of Windows Mobile 6 in this form factor. It's not for everyone, of course; Windows Mobile is the same old, cranky curmudgeon here that is is everywhere else -- and as anyone who's used version 6 knows, it's nothing more than 5 in a fresh set of clothes. That being said, HTC has done a great job of sprucing up the joint with a sprinkling of add-ins that make the OS more usable, while AT&amp;T brings goodies like TeleNav, AT&amp;T Music, and Cellular Video to the table. The hardware, though, is where this sucker shines. The Tilt has singlehandedly renewed our faith in HTC's ability to make exquisitely engineered devices, feeling utterly rock solid despite its relatively complex slide-tilt mechanism. It's heavy, but comfortably (and reassuringly) so, not to the point of annoyance, and the dark color scheme with black chrome nav keys looks better than we'd expected. One beef we expect some folks will have is with the Tilt's pudge -- it ain't the thinnest device in the world, about the same as the N95 (see the comparo shots in the gallery) -- but if you can get past that, this thing is <em>the</em> Windows Mobile device to have. For the moment, anyhow!<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hands-on-with-the-atandt-tilt/">Hands-on with the AT&amp;T Tilt</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hands-on-with-the-atandt-tilt/#425515"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgetmobile.com/media/2007/10/att-tilt-hands-on-00_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hands-on-with-the-atandt-tilt/#425519"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgetmobile.com/media/2007/10/att-tilt-hands-on-01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hands-on-with-the-atandt-tilt/#425495"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgetmobile.com/media/2007/10/att-tilt-hands-on-02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hands-on-with-the-atandt-tilt/#425493"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgetmobile.com/media/2007/10/att-tilt-hands-on-03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hands-on-with-the-atandt-tilt/#425511"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgetmobile.com/media/2007/10/att-tilt-hands-on-04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/htc/" rel="tag">HTC</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/atandt/" rel="tag">ATT</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/windows-mobile/" rel="tag">Windows Mobile</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gsm/" rel="tag">GSM</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/edge/" rel="tag">EDGE</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hsdpa/" rel="tag">HSDPA</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/umts/" rel="tag">UMTS</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/04/hands-on-with-the-atandt-tilt/">Hands-on with the AT&amp;T Tilt</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 04 Oct 2007 03:00:00 EST. Besides the obvious feature of a tilting display -- hence the name -- the spec sheet reveals a 3 megapixel autofocus camera, HSDPA, stereo Bluetooth, Windows Mobile 6 Professional (the first AT&amp;T device to officially rock it -- can ya believe it?), microSDHC slot for cards up to 32GB, WiFi, an integrated GPS receiver, and BlackBerry Connect support. Last time we checked, that pretty much covers the "superphone" checklist. Grab it starting Friday for $299.99 on contract after the full suite of rebates has been applied. We figure this website wasn't intended for public consumption -- either that, or we're all invited to the "2007 National Launch Tour" for the imminently available AT&amp;T Tilt, and we should be speaking to our regional sales managers immediately to confirm our eligibility. The picture here looks pretty much like <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2007/09/28/atandts-tilt-kaiser-variation-spotted-in-the-wild/">what we'd seen</a> of the HTC Kaiser variant in the wild, confirming that the front cam is gone (no surprise), though it's a little chubbier looking than we thought, yeah? Or is it just us? Anyway, the site gives nary a clue about when we might actually be able to get a Tilt in our hands simply by walking into a store, but happily, everything we've heard still points to an October launch. Now if you'll excuse us, we're going to go track down our regional sales manager.<br /><br />[Thanks, regenC]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cellphones/" rel="tag">Cellphones</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handhelds/" rel="tag">Handhelds</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/01/internal-atandt-site-foretells-tilt-launch/">Internal AT&amp;T site foretells Tilt launch</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 01 Oct 2007 17:17:00 EST. One of the most noticeable changes is a new silver dialpad of questionable taste, which sorta matches the seemingly shinier than usual navigation keys on the face of the device. Also, if you squint hard enough you'll see that there's an option to "Get TeleNav," which means that you won't be getting TomTom, and also likely means that you'll need a data connection to use it. It's now listing the Tilt with an expected in stock date of October 23rd, which is a fair bit later than the September 30th date it was quoting earlier.</span></div>

Note that these are <span style="font-style: italic;">order</span> dates, subject to change -- not necessarily in-store dates -- so your mileage may vary trying to grab these devices on the dates you see here. First up, LG rolls out the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/07/06/fcc-fridays/">CG180</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/14/lgs-cu515-for-atandt-rocks-the-fcc/">CU515 "Chiwoo"</a> on October 2. Nokia adds another color for the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/12/nokia-and-atandt-announce-6555-3g-flip/">6555</a> on October 11, red, which we think will suite it quite nicely. Speaking of new colors, Sony Ericsson brings a black version of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/30/sony-ericssons-w580i-walkman-lands-on-atandt/">W580i</a> on October 9. The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/28/pantech-c180-atandts-homage-to-the-helio-ocean/">Pantech Duo</a> -- a device we suspect many folks are getting fired up over -- should hit on the same day. From Motorola, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/12/motorola-q-global-makes-surprise-unorderable-cameo-on-atandt-site/">Q9 Global</a> becomes orderable just a few days from now, September 25, alongside the Tilt from HTC. UTStarcom outs the AMOI-sourced <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/03/08/atandts-qwerty-equipped-smt5700-drops-by-fcc/">5700</a> on October 9, giving folks a low cost (albeit non-3G) Windows Mobile option. RIM gets busy with the Curve 8310 on October 4, effectively sunsetting the original <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/05/30/atandt-gets-blackberry-curve-tomorrow/">8300</a> by adding GPS into the mix. On the data modem side, Sierra and Option will both be contributing HSUPA devices in October. Let's hear it for speedy uploads! Follow the break for the full roadmap.<br /><br />[Thanks, Superman]<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/21/updated-look-at-atandts-upcoming-launches/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Updated look at AT&amp;T's upcoming launches</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/htc/" rel="tag">HTC</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/lg/" rel="tag">LG</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/motorola/" rel="tag">Motorola</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/nokia/" rel="tag">Nokia</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/others/" rel="tag">Others</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/pantech/" rel="tag">Pantech</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/rim/" rel="tag">RIM</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/sony-ericsson/" rel="tag">Sony Ericsson</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/atandt/" rel="tag">ATT</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/windows-mobile/" rel="tag">Windows Mobile</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gsm/" rel="tag">GSM</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/edge/" rel="tag">EDGE</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hsdpa/" rel="tag">HSDPA</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/umts/" rel="tag">UMTS</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/21/updated-look-at-atandts-upcoming-launches/">Updated look at AT&amp;T's upcoming launches</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 21 Sep 2007 16:24:00 EST. First up, the AT&amp;T Tilt -- alias 8925, alias <a href="http://www.engadget.com/search/?q=Kaiser">Kaiser</a> -- is rumored to be priced at $299 on a two-year or $374 on a one-year agreement. The Pantech Duo, which Amazon <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/08/amazon-gets-impatient-offers-pantech-c810-for-atandt/">jumped the gun on</a> over the weekend, will be launching for $199 on a two-year, which makes the Amazon pricing a bargain already. The Nokia <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/21/nokias-6555-does-the-3g-flip-with-style/">6555 "Inferno"</a> gets priced at $49.99 on contract -- a steal for a sharp lookin' 3G flip, we figure. Last but not least, the Motorola <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/03/09/motorola-q-q9-coming-to-atandt/">Q9 global</a> finally materializes for a cool $299, putting it head to head with the Tilt. All four of these are supposedly scheduled for shipment to stores on October 1, making for a very interesting month. Everyone know which of the four they're choosing yet?<br /><br />[Thanks, Amy K.]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/htc/" rel="tag">HTC</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/motorola/" rel="tag">Motorola</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/nokia/" rel="tag">Nokia</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/pantech/" rel="tag">Pantech</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/atandt/" rel="tag">ATT</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/windows-mobile/" rel="tag">Windows Mobile</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gsm/" rel="tag">GSM</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gprs/" rel="tag">GPRS</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hsdpa/" rel="tag">HSDPA</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/umts/" rel="tag">UMTS</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/11/tilt-duo-inferno-and-q9h-to-blow-out-atandts-october/">Tilt, Duo, Inferno, and Q9h to blow out AT&amp;T's October?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 11 Sep 2007 14:38:00 EST. In case there was any lingering doubt that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/07/18/atandt-to-get-kaiser-as-8925/">AT&amp;T would pick up the Kaiser</a> as the successor to its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/search/?q=8525">8525</a>, this should put all those nasty thoughts to rest. Paul from MoDaCo has noticed that HTC's US site now rocks a guide to setting up BlackBerry Connect on the AT&amp;T 8925 "Tilt," confirming several notable things: one, that AT&amp;T is getting the device, two, that it's called the Tilt and its model number is 8925, and three, that it'll support BlackBerry Connect. Sadly, HTC's apparent misstep (or clever leak designed to get us all foaming at the mouth, depending on how you look at it) reveals nothing about a Tilt release date, but we've gotta think it's coming before too long now.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.modaco.com/ATandT-Tilt-Blackberry-Co-t258901.html">MoDaCo</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/software/" rel="tag">Software</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/htc/" rel="tag">HTC</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/rim/" rel="tag">RIM</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/atandt/" rel="tag">ATT</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/windows-mobile/" rel="tag">Windows Mobile</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gsm/" rel="tag">GSM</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gprs/" rel="tag">GPRS</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/edge/" rel="tag">EDGE</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hsdpa/" rel="tag">HSDPA</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/umts/" rel="tag">UMTS</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/05/htc-website-leaks-atandt-tilt-blackberry-connect-support/">HTC website leaks AT&amp;T Tilt, BlackBerry Connect support</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 05 Sep 2007 08:58:00 EST. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Xbox360/">Xbox 360</a> owners feeling left out of all the motion-sensitive fun PS3 and Wii owners are currently having can finally breathe easy... and then break out their wallets. Talismoon's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/search/?q=tiltboard">Tiltboard</a> mod is due to ship next week for an estimated $39.99 -- a number that doesn't include a controller or the soldering iron you'll need to install it. The board features adjustments for tilt sensitivity, y-axis orientation, and zero level, but unless there's a setting that ports WarioWare to the 360, we're missing the point.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/2007/06/18/tiltboard-gets-priced-and-its-spendy/">Xbox 360 Fanboy</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gaming/" rel="tag">Gaming</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/06/19/talismoon-ready-to-ship-the-tiltboard-360-controller-mod-next-we/">Talismoon ready to ship the Tiltboard 360 controller mod next week</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 19 Jun 2007 16:05:00 EST. It's honestly not too often that these homegrown <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/DIY/">DIY</a> efforts actually end up going big, but just as it was predicted, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/04/06/tilt-sensitive-tiltboard-module-going-big-for-xbox-360/">tiltBoard 360</a> is legit. Talismoon has officially released the second generation of the tilt sensitivity add-in for the Xbox 360 controller, which is supposedly "easier to use" than Sony's SIXAXIS. The board comes pre-loaded with tiltTune technology, which purportedly allows gamers to adjust the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/search/?q=tilt+sensitive">tilt sensitivity</a>, tweak the 0-degree point, invert the Y-axis, and even deactivate the tilt feature if you should desire. Unfortunately, this iteration is still not a simple drop-in mod, as you'll be busting out the soldering iron for no fewer than seven wires. Still, for those not afraid to their hands dirty, the next-gen tiltBoard 360 will be shipping later this month.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gaming/" rel="tag">Gaming</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/06/09/talismoon-unveils-second-generation-tiltboard-360/">Talismoon unveils second generation tiltBoard 360</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sat, 09 Jun 2007 21:34:00 EST. Apparently, these folks tend to get their points across best <a href="http://podcarts.engadget.com/2006/12/22/team-xtenders-xfps-360-in-action/">via video</a>, and Xbox-Scene has a brief clip of the XCM BestTilt mod fully installed and operational. The company claims that its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/search/?q=tilt+sensitive">tilt solution</a> can morph your mundane controller to a motion sensing one in "five simple solders," and also mentions that its product ups the ante over the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/04/06/tilt-sensitive-tiltboard-module-going-big-for-xbox-360/">other guys</a> by including a tilt controller chip and a replacement shell, too. Additionally, the "plug 'n play" term is thrown out there without much care, but we'd definitely take that one with a healthy dose of salt. Nevertheless, feel free to click on through to catch the currently unpriced XCM BestTilt in action.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/2007/05/09/360-get-another-retail-tilt-mod-the-besttilt/">Xbox360Fanboy</a>]<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/05/09/team-xtenders-xcm-besttilt-xbox-360-mod-caught-on-tape/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Team Xtender's XCM BestTilt Xbox 360 mod caught on tape</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gaming/" rel="tag">Gaming</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/peripherals/" rel="tag">Peripherals</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/05/09/team-xtenders-xcm-besttilt-xbox-360-mod-caught-on-tape/">Team Xtender's XCM BestTilt Xbox 360 mod caught on tape</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 09 May 2007 18:28:00 EST. Crafted by the designer of the Virtual Crib <a href="http://www.engadget.com/search/?q=home+automation">home automation</a> software, the USB <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/11/16/ps3-hopefuls-shot-with-bbs-at-kentucky-best-buy/">BB gun</a> sports automatic firing, manual reloading, and the ability to fire based on commands given remotely on a PC. Moreover, the weapon actually packs a webcam on the barrel, allowing users to login via computer, tilt / swivel the gun with simple mouse flicks, and fire away if you spot any intruders within its broad line of sight. It shouldn't need mentioning that we'd make absolutely sure our landlord was cool with mounting a remotely-controlled weapon in the window, but if you need to take home security into your own hands (without actually <em>being</em> at home), be sure to click on through to see this controversial creation spittin' hot fury.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/04/23/usb-bb-gun-sports-barrel-mounted-webcam-ensures-home-security/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>USB BB gun sports barrel-mounted webcam, ensures home security</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gadgets/" rel="tag">Misc.
