No matter to Toshiba. The company is getting ahead of the competition, showing off its back to school collection now. In addition to refreshing its entry-level C series, the outfit has redesigned its mainstream L and high-end P laptops. Look closely and you'll also see an entirely new line, the S series, which offers some of the same premium features as the P laptops, but with more of an emphasis on top-shelf specs than bells and whistles (because let's face it, bang-for-your-buck is likely to be a bigger priority for parents footing the bill). To keep things simple, we'll say this up front: each of these laptops is available in 14-, 15- and 17-inch sizes. Oh, and Toshiba isn't dishing too much on specs at the moment (Intel's Ivy Bridge processors still being shrouded in mystery and all.) Want the one-minute elevator pitch? You can jump straight to those pictures below. If you're curious about what makes each line distinct, follow past the break for the full breakdown.

Gallery: Toshiba C and L series laptops (Spring 2012)

Gallery: Toshiba P and S series laptops (Spring 2012)

Continue reading Toshiba announces fresh C, L, S and P series laptops for back-to-school season

Toshiba announces fresh C, L, S and P series laptops for back-to-school season originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 10 Apr 2012 08:00:00 EST. The company still isn't talking processors or GPUs, beyond saying that the line-up will use the "latest" hardware from Intel and "next-gen graphics from NVIDIA." Without getting breathless about it, this hints at what we'd already hoped: some Ivy Bridge action coupled with the possibility of Kepler graphics -- after all, these new Satellites won't start shipping til the next quarter. Regardless, here's some stuff we know for sure: The full line-up includes a second 15.6-incher (the P850) and two 17.6-inchers (the P870 and P875) which will do away with the lenticular 3D display but keep the metallic finish, LED backlighting, backlit keyboard, Slip Stream audio for playing music while in standby, four USB 3.0 ports, HDMI out, WiDi and BlueTooth 4.0, while also offering the options of a Blu-ray drive and hybrid hard-drive (8GB solid, 750GB spinning). No official word on pricing yet, but we've already reported that the range will likely start at £599 ($940). So, breathless is too much, but breathy is okay.
Continue reading Toshiba outs Satellite P8-series laptops, treads line between enigmatic and annoying

Toshiba outs Satellite P8-series laptops, treads line between enigmatic and annoying originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 10 Mar 2012 19:27:00 EST. This, despite her cries that doing so would violate her Fifth Amendment right to be free from self-incrimination. The argument is now moot, as authorities have managed to access the laptop's data without any aid from the defendant, thereby obviating any Constitutional conundrums. Who knows if the feds found the evidence of bank-fraud they were looking for, or whether it was brute force or a lucky guess that did the trick, but at least we can say it's the last of the laptop-related Fifth Amendment court cases for awhile, right?
Authorities decrypt laptop without defendant's help, Fifth Amendment need not apply originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 03 Mar 2012 09:02:00 EST. Outed by its Australian arm today, that would-be Portege is actually the company's Satellite U840. We already knew the electronics giant had intended on shuffling this Windows 7 machine out under that brand umbrella back at CES, but now we have a $1,500 AUD (about $1,608 USD) price tag to go with a list of confirmed specs. Officially on deck for this aluminum-bodied laptop are an Intel Core i5-2467M processor and HD Graphics 3000 GPU, 720p-capable 1366 x 768 LED display, 8GB of DDR3 RAM, 320GB of storage, in addition to ports for HDMI, mic, headphone and USB (1x USB 3.0 and 2x USB 2.0). We still don't know much about the capacity of the six cell battery powering this svelte notebook entry or a concrete landing date for that matter. But from the looks of this Aussie product page, that release is creeping mighty close.
Toshiba Satellite U840 goes official for Australia, still waiting on its US passport originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 06 Feb 2012 19:41:00 EST. The defendant, Ramona Fricosu, is facing charges of bank fraud, stemming from a federal investigation launched in 2010. As part of this investigation, federal authorities used a search warrant to seize her Toshiba Satellite M305 laptop. Fricosu's legal team had previously refused to decrypt the computer, on the grounds that doing so would violate her Fifth Amendment rights to avoid self-incrimination. On Monday, though, US District Judge Robert Blackburn ruled against the defendant, arguing that the prosecution retained the right to access her device, as stipulated under the All Writs Act -- a law that requires mobile operators to comply with federal surveillance.

"I conclude that the Fifth Amendment is not implicated by requiring production of the unencrypted contents of the Toshiba Satellite M305 laptop computer," Blackburn wrote, adding that there was strong evidence to suggest that Fricosu's computer contained information pertinent to the case. Fricosu's lawyer, Phil Dubois, is hoping to obtain a stay on the ruling, in the hopes of taking the case to an appeals court. "I think it's a matter of national importance," Dubois explained. "It should not be treated as though it's just another day in Fourth Amendment litigation." It remains to be seen whether Dubois succeeds in his appeal, though civil libertarians are already paying close attention to the case, since the US Supreme Court has yet to weigh in on the matter.
Judge forces defendant to decrypt laptop, fuels debate over Fifth Amendment rights originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 24 Jan 2012 06:13:00 EST. NVIDIA's 3D Vision is impressive and all, but one trade-off you'll have to accept when you put on those active shutter glasses is a markedly dimmer field of view than what you'd get if you settled for plain-Jane 2D gaming. Well, the outfit just unveiled the second generation of the technology -- appropriately named 3D Vision 2 -- and this go 'round it promises not to strain your vision quite so much. These shutter glasses have a lens that's 20 percent larger, promising a brighter experience. As an added perk, the frames have been rejiggered to be lighter and more flexible so that you can comfortably wear headphones without pinching your lobes. As for the newest 3D Vision monitors and laptops, those panels promise reduced ghosting, as well as 120Hz 2D gaming. In tandem with today's announcement, NVIDIA announced that a trio of products -- the Toshiba Qosmio X770 / 775, Toshiba Satellite P770 / P775 and ASUS's 27-inch VG278H 1080p monitor -- will support now 3D Vision 2. If a new rig's not in the cards, the company also assures us that these glasses will be backward compatible with older 3D Vision panels. Look for them this month in the form of either standalone frames ($99) or as part of a $149 kit. All those details and more in the PR tucked after the break.

Continue reading NVIDIA intros 3D Vision 2 glasses with brighter field of view, comfier design

NVIDIA intros 3D Vision 2 glasses with brighter field of view, comfier design originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 14 Oct 2011 21:30:00 EST. We know that this time of year can be pretty annoying and stressful for everyone, so we're here to help out with the heartbreaking process of gadget buying for the school-aged crowd. Today we're getting down to the very important business of helping you sift through laptops, and you can always head to the Back to School hub to see the rest of the product guides as they're added throughout the month. Be sure to keep checking back -- at the end of the month we'll be giving away a ton of the gear featured in our guides -- and hit up the hub page right here!

Ah, laptops. Some of us received our first notebooks the summer before college if not later. But times have changed and we're sure for many of the kids reading this freshman year is just an excuse to upgrade from the clunkers that carried them through high school. Either way, this one's pretty much mandatory -- unless you're a serious gamer who insists on a desktop GPU for marathon sessions of CoD: Black Ops, you're going to need a laptop for pounding out last-minute term papers in the library, taking notes in class and posting incriminating photos on Facebook. The problem is, the market's overrun with laptops that purport to be just perfect for the back to school set. They can't all be worth your money, though, so we whittled the list down to a handful of choices for each budget -- and if you're lucky you'll get your very own HP Pavilion dm1z for the pretty price of, well, nothing. Simply leave a comment below to be entered to win, and check out our giveaway page for more details. So wipe off the glasses, grab your clicker, and get ready to jump past the break for a top-level overview of this year's picks for back to school.

Continue reading Engadget's back to school guide 2011: laptops

Engadget's back to school guide 2011: laptops originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 26 Aug 2011 12:00:00 EST. When AMD came clean with its Fusion A-Series platform, the outfit was quick to admit that some manufacturers have already started slipping these hybrid CPU / GPU chips into their spankin' new PCs. Still, at this early stage we still haven't spotted many of 'em -- if anything, we have a better idea what's on tap for later this summer. But here we have the Toshiba Satellite L750D-ST4N01, the first available Llano-packing notebook we've seen since the A-Series' launch. At $699, this 15.6-incher might seem like a forgettable system with its 4GB of RAM, 640GB 5400RPM hard drive, 1366 x 768 panel, and three USB 2.0 ports. Heck, Toshiba barely even gave the L series lip service when it announced a slew of laptops last week. But, what makes this seemingly ho-hum machine special is that it packs AMD's mid-range quad-core A6-3400M chip and an AMD Radeon HD 6520G graphics core -- a combination that adds just $10 to the cost over a similarly configured Satellite L755-S5258 with a dual-core Core i5-2410M processor and integrated Intel graphics. The L750D isn't for you? The deluge of A-Series systems hasn't even begun yet, friends. And while the jury's still out on real-world battery performance, this should make it crystal clear that if nothing else, AMD is taking no prisoners when it comes to pricing.
Now in its third year, Best Buy's Blue Label program is something of a time capsule for fickle consumer tastes. Being the behemoth that it is, the retail giant hands PC makers a wishlist of specs, design flourishes, and aggressive price points -- all with the promise of selling the finished product exclusively. The 14-inch Toshiba Satellite E305 has had more than a few facelifts since we reviewed the E205 last year, and reminds us that nowadays, shoppers prefer metal to glossy plastic, and seamless touchpads to large mouse buttons. The E305's got all that, along with a Sandy Bridge processor, USB 3.0, a Blu-ray drive, a 4G radio, and the second generation of Intel's Wireless Display technology. For $899, that all sounds dandy, but as we know, a laptop doesn't always equal the sum of its parts. Is it as much of a steal as you'd imagine it to be? That fancy new Toshiba E305 we checked out back in January is up for pre-order now, and it's brought along a friend from Sony (the VPCSC1AFM/S) to join the Best Buy-exclusive Blue Label party. In terms of specs the two machines are practically identical -- both boast a 2.3GHz Core i5-2410M, 4GB of RAM, a 500GB hybrid hard disk, a Blu-ray drive, WiDi (and an adapter for your TV from Netgear), and a WiMAX radio. The big differences between the two PCs are price and size, with the 14-inch Toshiba weighing in just under 5 pounds and costing $900, while the Sony squeezes in under the 4-pound mark for $950. Considering the wealth of extras, including a year of Kaspersky anti-virus, 90 days of Geek Squad support, and an extended two-year warranty, the Blue Label machines are actually a pretty good bang for your buck and cost about $100 less than comparably equipped systems from their respective makers. If you don't care about things like Blu-ray or WiMAX, and distrust the Geek Squad though, you could save yourself some cash by skipping on these pre-configured models and going with a customized rig from Sony or Toshiba directly. PR after the break.
Continue reading Best Buy slaps Blue Label on Sony and Toshiba laptops, packed to the exhaust vents with extras

Best Buy slaps Blue Label on Sony and Toshiba laptops, packed to the exhaust vents with extras originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 18 Apr 2011 13:39:00 EST. These include the 13.3-inch L730 and L735, the 15.6-inch L750 and L755, and, if you're hankering for a desktop replacement, the hulking 17.3-inch L770 and L775. This latest spin on the L Series boasts 3D support, connecting to 3DTVs over HDMI and, in some cases, converting 2D content to 3D. As in the States, shoppers abroad can add up to 8GB of RAM, and will get their choice of Intel Core i3 and Core i5 processors and various AMD CPUs, including triple- and quad-core options. Also look for multitouch trackpads, 5,400RPM hard drives as large as 750GB, 1.3 megapixel webcams, a mix of USB 3.0 and sleep-and-charge USB 2.0 ports, and a choice of integrated Intel HD graphics or a discrete NVIDIA GeForce 315M card with up to 1GB of video memory. No word yet on when they'll go on sale or how much they'll cost, but those curious for more can hit the source link for the full spill.

Toshiba's Satellite L Series continues its world tour, adds 2D-to-3D conversion originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 06 Apr 2011 16:07:00 EST. There have been a lot of phone and tablet announcements here at MWC 2011, but laptops? Not so much. Toshiba's not following the crowd here, though. Instead, it's touched down in Barcelona with three fresh Satellites -- the 13.3-inch R830, 14-inch R840, and 15.6-inch R850. Aesthetically, they should look very familiar as Toshiba's basically refreshed its Portege R700 series with Intel's latest Core i5 and i7 Sandy Bridge processors and enhanced its cooling system. The company was a bit vague on specific configuration details (though, we took some shots of the system properties in the gallery below), but its press release does list that the rigs will be available with up to 8GB of RAM and 640GB of hard disk storage, SSDs, and USB 3.0. The R830 (pictured above) is still one of our favorites, and like the R705, it is made of magnesium, only weighs 3.2 pounds, and still has a optical drive. The R840 and R850 have been slightly retooled with subtlety striped lids, which we are told of made of a high stiffness resin. Both models have chiclet keyboards and regular touchpads with two mouse buttons, though the 14- and 15-inchers have pointing sticks. All three models will be hitting in April, but Tosh is keeping quiet on pricing. Hit the first gallery for a few shots of the rigs and the second for a look at the special copper airflow cooling system Toshiba's cooked up.
Nabbed one of Toshiba's fully-loaded stereoscopic laptops, only to find a dearth of actual 3D? The company's got a software update that might revitalize your machine. Where previously you'd have to install ready-made dual-ocular content directly to your hard drive, the manufacturer's just promised a Toshiba Video Player application that will convert your existing 2D content into 3D, plus firmware that will help you pipe stereoscopic video over the integrated HDMI port and upgrade your Blu-ray drive to take the new Blu-ray 3D discs -- though we honestly thought it could do that last bit already. While there's no word on availability, the press release suggests a download will pop up any moment... so, you know, be sure to keep both eyes out. We're starting to think Toshiba's got more Satellites than NASA, but for those that can't squeeze together the cash for a new A or M Series laptop, Tosh has its L600 or C600 machines standing close by. The 13-inch L635, 14-inch L645, 15.6-inch L655, and 17.3-inch L675 have all been remodeled with that new Fusion X2 finish, which looks glossy from afar but is actually fingerprint resistant. They don't get the new chiclet keyboards, but the flush keys are smooth and there are dedicated right / left mouse buttons under the touchpad. Internally there's your pick of Intel Core i3, Core i5 CPUs and AMD Athlon II, Turion II dual-core, Phenom II Triple Core and Quad Core processors. While the entry level $515 model won't be equipped with the discrete ATI Radeon 5145 GPU, it'll be a configuration option. Lower down on the spectrum you've got the 14-inch C645 and 15.6-inch C655, which are your typical set of bargain basement laptops. Both are available with Intel Celeron and Pentium processors as well as AMD's Athlon V120 chip. Not the most attractive pair of laptops we've seen, but it's hard to complain when they start at $449. Check them out for yourself in the gallery below, and then hit the break for more details in the full press release.

Gallery: Toshiba Satellite L600 and C600 series hands-on

Gallery: Toshiba Satellite L600 and C600 series press shots

Continue reading Toshiba Satellite L600 and C600 series laptops think of the struggling students

Toshiba Satellite L600 and C600 series laptops think of the struggling students originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 15 Jun 2010 08:02:00 EST. We know, that's a pretty loaded headline, but that's exactly what Toshiba's new laptops are... loaded. Let's start with that beauty pictured above -- the now fairly familiar and often leaked 15.6-inch Satellite A665. Starting at $1,599, the 3D bad boy boasts pretty much everything you'd want in a mobile gaming rig under two grand, including an Intel Core i7-740QM CPU, NVIDIA GeForce GTS 350M graphics with 1GB of VRAM, a 640GB hard drive, 4GB of RAM, and a Blu-ray drive that supports 3D playback. It comes with NVIDIA's 3D Vision kit, which includes the usual active shutter glasses and emitter. But it's not all about the specs on the A665 -- both it and the M645 have been redesigned with chiclet keyboards and a new Fusion X2 finish that combines a glossy and matte coating. Those taken with the A665 but aren't into the 3D stuff can configure a 16-inch version, which starts at $799, with a choice of Intel Core 2010 processors.

The 14-inch M645 is the smaller version of the A665 and features Core i3, i5 and i7 CPU options as well as AMD's Phenom II Quad Core processors. On the graphics front, we're extremely happy to see the line use NVIDIA's Optimus technology to automatically switch between the GeForce 310M or GeForce GT330M GPU and the IGP. To boot, the systems can be configured with Blu-ray and 7,200rpm hard drives. We should also mention that both the A665 and M645 have Toshiba's new Sleep + Music capability, which allows you plug a music player into the mic jack and blast out your tunes through the laptop's Harmon Kardon speakers even when it's powered down. We told you these machines were loaded. We'll be bringing you full reviews soon, but in the meantime enjoy the pics and full PR below.

Gallery: Toshiba Satellite A and M Series hands-on

Gallery: Toshiba Satellite M645 and A665 press shots

Continue reading Toshiba Satellite M645 boasts NVIDIA Optimus and improved aesthetics, Satellite A665 makes its 3D arrival

Toshiba Satellite M645 boasts NVIDIA Optimus and improved aesthetics, Satellite A665 makes its 3D arrival originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 15 Jun 2010 08:01:00 EST. We're no strangers to Toshiba's new T200 Series ultrathin laptops -- heck, we even spotted the slim portables lounging around at Computex a few weeks ago -- but Tosh is finally giving up the full specs, pricing and availability. The 11.6-inch T215 may look and feel like a netbook at 3.3 pounds, but it's got grown-up specs, including AMD Athlon II Neo single or dual-core processors, ATI integrated graphics, up to 320GB of storage space and 2GB of DDR3 RAM. The larger 13-inch T235 has similar AMD options, including Athon II Neo and Turion II Neo processors, but also works in Intel's Pentium dual-core CPUs. Though rather oddly, the 3.9-pound laptop won't be available with those new Core ULV processors like it is in the UK. Oh, and just to refresh your memory, the new laptops are available in black, red and white and have the same, sturdy chiclet keyboards as the Mini NB305. Both models will be available on June 20 and will start at $469.99. That price sounds mighty good to us, but we will reserve judgment until we get these in for a full review. If you had your eye on a CULV-toting Toshiba Satellite ultraportable, you might to wait another month before coughing up the change -- Pocket-Lint says the mysterious new Toshibas from Computex are actually updates to the T110 and T130, and both are getting a sizable upgrade. Whereas 2009's low-end lappy settled for a Celeron chip, the Iron Man Metallic T210 (pictured above) has a dual-core 1.2GHz Pentium U5400 powering that 11.6-inch LED-backlit display, and the 13.3-inch T230 is back in black with a Core ULV i3-330UM and a 500GB hard drive. Both feature Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, 802.11n Wi-Fi, chiclet keyboards and the usual array of ports, and both claim a very respectable 8.5 hours of battery life on a 6-cell battery's charge. No word on pricing or stateside availability (like that drool-worthy 3D Dynabook) but astute Brits should find them in stores next month.
Toshiba refreshes Satellite low-power laptops in the UK originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 08 Jun 2010 19:14:00 EST. It's no secret that the Toshiba Mini NB305 is one of our favorite netbooks on the market, mostly because of its chiclet keyboard and wide touchpad. Thankfully for us, it looks like Toshiba is planning to spread the same design to its ultrathin Satellite lineup sometime soon. Shown above is what appears to be a minty fresh update to the Satellite M135 on the Computex show floor. The 13-inch laptop looked mighty attractive -- it's about an inch thick, and as mentioned has the same sturdy keyboard as the Mini NB305. We're not the biggest fans of the pattern etched into the metal palmrest, but on the plus side its touchpad has dedicated right and left buttons. We can't tell you much in the way of specs, but it was on display at the Intel booth with a Core i5-U520 processor and also hanging out at the AMD booth with one of those new Athlon II Neo CPUs. This thing is bound to be official sometime soon, but in the meantime check out the hands-on shots below and start saving up for what could be one of the best ultrathins headed to the market.

Gallery: New Toshiba Satellite ultrathin

Toshiba redesigns Satellite ultrathin laptops, we go hands-on originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 03 Jun 2010 09:56:00 EST. So it's been a long day, you plop down on the couch, turn on the TV and grab your laptop and a cold beverage. But while you're watching that re-run of The Office on TBS you come across an awesome video on the web - probably the Engadget Show - and instead of watching that expensive 40-inch HDTV you end up staring at the smaller screen. Okay, so maybe that's our specific scenario, but you'd probably hook up your laptop to a TV in a number of different situations if it didn't involve cables, dongles, and extra software -- basically if it were just easier. Well, it's supposed to be with the $999 Toshiba Satellite E205 and its included Netgear Push2TV adapter.

Exclusively sold at Best Buy as part of its Blue Label program, the 15-inch Core i5-powered laptop is outfitted with Intel's Wireless Display -- what we've taken to calling WiDi -- which wirelessly connects the laptop to any HDTV using the included Netgear with just the push of a button. But can you really watch Hulu on the big screen without leaving your couch? And is the E205 even a laptop you'd want to use in the first place? We've been "testing" it -- or watching loads of web video on our TV -- for the last couple of days to find out. Read on for our full review!
CES is great and all, but one of the bones we choose to pick with the show is the typically long gap between the Vegas introduction and the mass market ship date. Thankfully for us, Toshiba has no interest in keeping us waiting for one of the world's first Intel Wireless Display-equipped (or WiDi, as it were) laptops. The Satellite E205 -- which comes stocked with a 2.53GHz Core i5-430M processor, 4GB of DDR3 memory, a dual-layer DVD writer, 14-inch display (1,366 x 768 resolution), 500GB hard drive and a Netgear Push2TV wireless display adapter -- is now shipping from Best Buy. Of course, you'll have to deal with integrated Intel graphics, but the inbuilt wireless display technology, multicard reader, 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi, Ethernet jack and media buttons are nice inclusions when you consider the respectable $899.99 price point. So, what's the hesitation?
Toshiba seems to be the first out the door with Intel's just announced Wireless Display technology. Actually the $999 Satellite E205 seems like one big group hug between Intel, Toshiba and Best Buy. Exclusive to Best Buy and actually designed by those Best Buy customers (okay, they just gave Toshiba feedback), the 14-incher is powered by an Intel Core i5-430M processor and has a 320GB hard drive. But its most impressive spec is its Intel Wireless Display technology (or WiDi) which lets you wirelessly connect your laptop to your HDTV to stream video and audio with an HDMI adapter. Check back soon for a hands-on, but full specs after the break.
Continue reading Toshiba Satellite E205 is first laptop with Intel Wireless Display (WiDi) technology

Toshiba Satellite E205 is first laptop with Intel Wireless Display (WiDi) technology originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 07 Jan 2010 20:05:00 EST. Apparently, today's the day to release affordable mainstream laptops and Toshiba is joining the flood with seven new Satellites. Yes, Tosh's got seven new models with every screen size from 13 inches on up to 18.4. We're pretty interested in the higher end 16-inch Satellite A505 which will have choices of Intel Core i3-330M, Core i5-430M, Core i7-720QM as well as AMD Turion Ultra M620 processors. The starting at $749 rig will also be offered with Blu-ray and discrete graphics options. On the lower end, the 13.3 inch Satellite U505, isn't as thin or light as the Toshiba T135, but the Core i3-330M and Core i5-430M powered system can be configured with a mulittouch display and WiMAX. The 15.6 inch L505, 17.3-inch L555, and 18.4 inch P505 all have Intel Core i3 and i5 options, but hit the break for the detailed specs.

We know you love nothing more than a Toshiba Satellite laptop announcement, so listen up: the company has just announced two new CULV ultraportables of the UK and stateside market: The Satellite T135 (or the T130 as it's known overseas) is a 13.3-inch beauty with options including either an Intel Pentium, Celeron single core or Celeron dual-core CPU, up to 3GB of DDR3 RAM, and 250GB harddrive. The Satellite T115 (or T110 in the UK) sports an 11.6-inch display, either an Intel Pentium or Celeron single core CPU, and up to 4GB of RAM and 500GB harddrive. What's more, the kids over at Laptop Mag have given the T135 the old once-over and found it to be a pretty good deal: "for slightly less than the competition," they said of the $709 review unit, you're getting "good performance and a stylish design." Perhaps the single touchpad button and the quiet speakers will be a turn-off to some, but it takes all kinds, right? Look for the T135 and T115 on October 22nd, for $599 and $449 respectively -- their UK counterparts should hit the streets on the same date, priced from £429.
Read - Toshiba Satellite T130/T135 and T110/T115 CULV ultraportables debut
Read - Toshiba Satellite T135 review

It's getting to be that time of the year where all the kids and teenagers flock to retail and spend copious amounts on back-to-school gear. Best Buy knows this cycle all too well, and has hand-picked a quartet laptops to showcase for its Next Class branded lineup. So what do these laptops have? Anywhere from a 14 to 15.5-inch screen, bundled Microsoft Office and 12 to 15 months of antivirus software, Intel Core 2 Duo processors, 3GB DDR3 or 4GB DDR2 memory, 320GB HDD, a sub-six pound weight, and a three to six hour battery life. Each of the four have their own merits, from Toshiba's $650 price tag to Dell's 4.7 pound body, but to us the HP Pavilion DV4 and Sony VAIO NW stand out. Of course, you could cast your net a little wider and shop around for all kinds of different models yourself, but if you're feeling particularly lazy, this isn't a bad set to pick from.

Read - Press release
Read - Next Class website

Best Buy gears up for back to school crowds with Next Class-branded laptop series originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 23 Jul 2009 01:21:00 EST.
Not sold on Toshiba's new NB205 netbook or one of its many new Satellite laptops announced earlier this week? Don't worry, 'cause Toshiba's just announced four more Satellite models, all of which fall under its budget-minded L Series line. Those include the 14-inch Satellite L510/L515, the 15.6- and 16-inch Satellite L500/L505, and the heavyweight 17.3-inch Satellite L550/L555, each of which pack either AMD Athlon or Turion, or Intel Pentium or Core 2 Duo processors depending on the configuration, along with integrated graphics or ATI's discrete Radeon 3100, a 10-key numeric keypad on the 15.6-inch and larger models, a minimum 2GB of RAM and 250GB hard drive, and Toshiba's trademark "Fusion" finish on the whole lot of 'em. Best of all, starting prices range from a reasonable $550 to $650, and all are apparently available to order right now.

Remember those new Satellites that Toshiba dropped in Europe a week or two ago? Seems like they're making the scene Stateside starting today, alongside several of their siblings. As previously noted, the A500 is a 16-inch multimedia machine (starting at $749.99), while the U500 ($849.99) is a 13.3-inch guy more suited to on-the-go computing. Newly announced are the M500/M505 (with 14-inch high-def LED display, starting at $699.99) and the P500/P505 (an 18.4-inch desktop replacement with slot-loading DVD drive, starting at $799.99). All the new Satellites include multimedia command keys, webcam, face recognition software, harmon/kardon speakers and, of course, the world renowned eSATA/USB combo port. And if you're good, we have a couple pics for you. After the break, of course.

Toshiba's added a couple new Satellite laptops into the mix, with options for both the road warrior and the stay-at-home multimedia user. First, the A500: this guy sports a 16-inch, 16:9 format display (1366 x 768), a TV-tuner for both analog and digital DVB-T programming, Harman Kardon speakers and HDMI ports with REGZA LINK technology. Under the hood, this guy packs an Intel Core 2 Duo, 8GB memory, an ATI Mobility Radeon HD GPU (up to 1GB DDR3 VRAM), and either a 500GB HDD or 64GB SSD. For those of you on the ultra-portable tip, the U500 is a 13.3-inch (16:10 format, 1280 x 800) ultraportable that weighs in at just under 4.5 pounds. With an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 8 GB memory, a hard disk capacity of up to 500GB, and an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 GPU, this bad boy is available in Brown Luxe, with either chrome or silver accents. Claimed battery life is over 3.5 hours. Both lappies feature a DVD Super Multi drive, wide format HD webcam, multi-touch trackpad, and the usual host of connectivity options (WLAN, Bluetooth 2.1, 5-in-1 media card slot). Both will be available in Europe sometime this July for €699 (approx. $975).

Read - Toshiba Satellite U500 with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570
Read - Toshiba Satellite A500 by 16 inches

Toshiba has announced that its Satellite A350 and NB100 would soon be finding their way into Europe, Middle East, and African (EMEA) markets with an added bonus: HSPA technology. We've got precisely nada on the price tag for these iterations, however, which normally retail for around $800 and $500 without 3G. If you're on the lookout for a laptop with some extra portability, both models are expected to hit retail channels first quarter of this year.

[Via Notebook Italia]

Toshiba packs NB100, A350 with 3G and ships them off to EMEA originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 10 Feb 2009 07:51:00 EST. The Toshiba E105 has been sneaking around the fringes for a few days now, but apparently it's not just announced -- it's available for purchase. That's right, the oddly familiar looking 14.1-incher can be had at Best Buy for the totally reasonable price of $1,199.99, packing a 2.26GHz Core 2 Duo, a 1280 x 800 TruBrite LCD display, 4GB of RAM, a 320GB hard drive, and an Intel 4500MHD integrated GPU. The Satellite also sports 802.11a/b/g/n, an HDMI out, Vista Home Premium, and that all-important fingerprint reader (just remember, this increases the odds of someone cutting off your finger). The laptop is available right now online, no word if it's on store shelves yet.

[Via LogicBUY]

Toshiba's MacBook Pro-esque Satellite E105 arrives at Best Buy originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 05 Oct 2008 23:19:00 EST. The "Mist Gray" Satellite M115 lineup, supposedly targeted at "on-the-go consumers" looking for "productivity and entertainment" on the cheap, doesn't pack any Merom goodness, but it does manage a decent showing for the price. The Satellite M115-S1061 houses a lowly 1.6GHz Intel Celeron M processor, 14.1-inch WXGA widescreen LCD, Windows XP Home, integrated ATi Radeon Xpress 200 graphics, 512MB of DDR2 RAM, 80GB 5,400RPM SATA drive, CD burning combo drive, WiFi, S-Video out, a foursome of USB 2.0 ports, and a paltry "2.08 hours" of battery life. The S1071 model throws in a DVD burner, while the S1064 is powered by Windows XP MCE. Cranking things up ever so slightly is the Satellite M115-S3094, which rocks a 1.6GHz T2050 Intel Core Duo processor, Windows XP MCE, integrated Intel GMA 950 graphics, 512MB of DDR2 RAM, 80GB 5,400RPM SATA drive, dual-layer DVD burner, 802.11a/b/g, four USB 2.0 ports, video outputs, a 4-pin FireWire connector, and a somewhat more respectable "3.97 hours" of battery life. The S3154 sports a "Smart Indigo" enclosure in favor of the gray, while the S3104 gets a full gig of RAM. Besides the dizzying amount of specs, the real news here is the pricing: the M115-S1061 series starts at just $700, while the M115-S3094 flavors will set you back around $850.

[Via Laptoping]

Toshiba unveils Satellite M115 budget notebook series originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 27 Sep 2006 17:06:00 EST. In case you haven't had your fill of Merom-powered notebooks, Toshiba is hoping to spice things up a bit with its oddly-spec'd A105-S4344. We hope you really dig the 6-pounder's "onyx blue metallic" finish, as it's the only available color option at present. If you're still hanging with us, you'll find a 15.4-inch LCD, 1.66GHz T5500 Core 2 Duo CPU, a whole 2GB of RAM, a massive 200GB 4200RPM hard drive, dual-layer DVD burner, 802.11a/b/g, and even a fingerprint reader to boot. Toshiba apparently felt these impressive inclusions could cover up the lackluster Intel GMA 950 integrated graphics, missing Bluetooth, substandard XGA resolution, and the lack of gigabit Ethernet. Anyways, the machine does muster a nice selection of ports, including PCMCIA, ExpressCard, 5-in-1 flash reader, S-Video out, 4-pin FireWire, and a foursome of USB 2.0 ports. Presumably catering to media-centric buyers, Toshiba includes Windows XP Media Center Edition and a reported "4.22 hours of battery life" to watch at least a couple decent flicks while on the move. The snazzy blue A105-S4344 is currently available for $1,399.99 (after rebate).

[Via Laptoping]

Toshiba's Satellite A105-S4344 goes Merom originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 26 Sep 2006 16:48:00 EST.
