Since we <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/21/engadget-tablet-buyers-guide-summer-2012/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">last brought you</a> a buyer's guide, a few things have changed. In fact, this is probably the biggest shake-up yet, with not only the long-rumored iPad mini making an appearance, but also new offerings from two other big guns -- Microsoft and Google. Oh, and that means there's a whole new species of device altogether. With Windows RT finally shipping, there's new hardware to go with it, and we expect to see more popping up on the list in the months to come. This is all good news for you prospective tablet owners, as more competition can only mean more choice. With more options, though, comes more confusion. That's where we come in, armed with a few notable picks. Read on to find out what made the cut this season.</p>

According to a kind tipster and other folks from the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/XdaDevelopers/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Xda-Developers</a> forums, an Android 4.1.1 update can currently be found in the usual spot within settings, though there are others reporting to have checked and not being greeted with the same luck -- this, however, is likely due to the rollout being a gradual one. Either way, those who wish to snag the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/28/android-4-1-jelly-bean-review-a-look-at-whats-changed-in-googl/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Jelly Bean</a> treats can try and do so now via the familiar "check for update" in your myriad ASUS tablet. And, of course, do let us know how it's working out for you in the comments below.</p><p> <strong>Update:</strong> Unsurprisingly, the very same update is being pushed to ASUS' other Transformer Pad / Prime devices as well.<br /> <br /> [Thanks, Anthony]</p>

The company must be coming out of its shell: it just posted a teaser for Jelly Bean updates coming to the Transformer Pad Prime TF201 (formerly the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/01/asus-eee-pad-transformer-prime-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Eee Pad Transformer Prime</a>) and the flagship <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/25/asus-transformer-pad-infinity-tf700-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Transformer Pad Infinity TF700</a>. ASUS was initially hesitant to say more than that it would come "soon," but Technical Marketing Manager Gary Key has stepped in to confirm that North America will get the update within a surprisingly quick 72 hours. The only glaring omission is a matching refresh for the original <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/18/asus-eee-pad-transformer-uk-edition-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Eee Pad Transformer</a> to give veteran owners a little TLC.</p>

<p> <em>Welcome to Engadget's back to school guide! </em><em>The end of summer vacation isn't nearly as much fun as the weeks that come before, but a chance to update your tech tools likely helps to ease the pain.</em><em> Today, we're leaning back with our tablets -- and you can head to the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/backtoschool2012?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">back to school hub</a> to see the rest of the product guides as they're added throughout the month. </em><em>Be sure to keep checking back -- at the end of August we'll be <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/06/back-to-school-giveaway/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">giving away</a> a ton of the gear featured in our guides -- you can hit up the hub page <a href="http://www.engadget.com/backtoschool2012?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">right here</a>!</em></p><p class="image-container" style="text-align: center; "> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/07/back-to-school-guide-tablets/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img alt="DNP Engadget's back to school guide 2012 tablets" data-src-height="186" data-src-width="563" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/07/eng-bts-tablets.jpg" /></a></p><p style="text-align: left; "> <span style="text-align: left; ">Your back may be straining from the textbooks, laptop, gym gear and lunch in that dangling overstuffed messenger, but you're still gonna want to save room for one more item -- a tablet. After all, while you can surf, tweet, play games and watch video from your other devices, there's nothing like doing it from a simple glass window that sits in the palm of your hand. As the hardware gets more powerful, these devices are rapidly becoming versatile enough to let you justify leaving the laptop at home on less-intensive days, so why not check out our picks of the finest devices you should be using and abusing before, during and after class.</span></p><div style="text-align: center; "></div>

Thankfully, that's about to change, as the Taiwanese outfit just announced the Transformer TF700 will be up for grabs from Amazon in the UK starting August 31st, with the sticker value set at &pound;600 for the rather spacious 64GB configuration and with the useful dock included. Naturally, that's only a small part of the entire package, given how you'd also be getting a beautiful 1920 x 1200 display and the famed Tegra 3 chip to get you through the days. The only tedious bit is you'll still have to wait a while to place your order; in the meantime, however, you could always give <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/25/asus-transformer-pad-infinity-tf700-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">our review</a> yet another read.</p>

So far, the outfit is committing to updating the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/01/asus-eee-pad-transformer-prime-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Transformer Prime</a>, along with the Transformer Pads <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/22/asus-transformer-pad-tf300-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">TF300</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/25/asus-transformer-pad-infinity-tf700-review?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">TF700</a>. Though ASUS is careful to say it's considering other devices, it's still not promising to upgrade the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/18/asus-eee-pad-transformer-uk-edition-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">original Eee Pad Transformer</a> or <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/EeePadSlider/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Eee Pad Slider</a>. No word, exactly, on when users will get a taste of Project Butter and Google Now, except that it should happen within "the coming months." Hopefully, of course, that's just an outside estimate: after all, ASUS isn't known for saddling its tablets with heavily customized skins, which can bog down the upgrade cycle.</p>

Looking back, it seems quaint that its mobile lineup was so recently dominated by Android tablets -- and that the Transformer series was once regarded as unique for having <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/04/samsung-series-5-hybrid-PC-windows-8/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">detachable</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/03/acer-iconia-w700-w510-windows-8/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">keyboard docks</a>. But this week, at least, it's back to Android for ASUS: the company just announced that the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/27/asus-rebrands-its-tablets-transformer-pads-announces-the-infi/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Transformer Pad Infinity</a> announced back at Mobile World Congress is finally going on sale here in the US. It's expected to hit shelves the week of July 16th, starting at $499 for the 32GB model and $599 for the 64GB version. Like other Transformer tabs, the accompanying dock will sell separately for $149.</p><p> We've got a rundown of the full specs after the break, and as it turns out, we've also been <em>testing</em> one for the past week. No, if Best Buy's online store has anything to say about it, the Transformer Pad Infinity's FCC excursion was preparing it for sale. It's not quite ready yet, but when it is, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/BestBuy/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Best Buy </a>will apparently be handing the slab out for $599 and change, netting buyers 64GB of storage, NVIDIA's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Tegra3/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Tegra 3</a> processor and a 1,920 x 1,200 10.1-inch Super IPS+ display.
