"The living room is dying," Kyle Broflovski solemnly states in this week's episode of South Park, as he loudly longs for the days when he and his brother Ike would spend their days together, playing Call of Duty and other video games. See, Ike isn't interested in playing games anymore. He's interested in watching YouTube stars like PewDiePie play and make commentary. Following up on episodes like "Freemium Isn't Free" and "Grounded Vindaloop" which also explored aspects of video games and game culture, "#REHASH" is the episode for anyone who just doesn't get what the big deal is with Let's Play personalities like PewDiePie. Watch the episode and see what we mean, bros. [Image: Comedy Central]

The first full trailer for South Park: Tenorman's Revenge -- which you can view above -- shows off the death-defying stunts Cartman and co. will get into this spring. Tenorman's Revenge is the final XBLA exclusive from South Park Studios under its initial agreement with Microsoft.Show creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker are hard at work on South Park: The Game -- perhaps doubly so now that a few of the Obsidian team members were "affected" by layoffs.

Creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker revealed the first details of the South Park RPG in Game Informer this week, and the project sounds so awesome that it isn't even funny. To break it down, players of South Park: The Game will be the new kid in town, and the main struggle will be to fit in and be accepted (See? South Park really is a public-programming after-school show, mom). Characters will be completely customizable and Cartman will help players choose their class -- wizard, paladin, adventurer, rogue or another, unannounced class made up by Cartman. The story will begin with players joining a live-action RPG with neighborhood kids, which will then turn into a real adventure. The combat system will mirror Paper Mario, weapon augmentation will draw from Final Fantasy's Materia, and the levels are all illustrated and animated by hand, in a completely 2D format, devoid of any real-life hamsters. Parker and Stone say there will be a summoning system, but that they can't talk about it yet. And, most shocking of all, Parker and Stone say the game will be funny. NeoGAF has a nice summary of the article right here.

  • Joystiq review: South Park makes love, not Warcraft [update 2]

To kick off the fall season of South Park, creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone decided to take on gaming phenomenon World of Warcraft. The episode kicks off in Goldshire. Cartman, "a mighty dwarf," takes back from a bathroom break before they all take on a quest. The boys collide with a half-naked avatar who dances and then kills the boys ... without agreeing to a duel! Ooh, he breaks the rules. Blizzard is helpless to stop them -- he can actually kill admins. So all the children -- even Butters, who had to switch from Hello Kitty Island Adventures -- all band together to stop the foe. Failing that, the boys power-level for over 17 days in the small hope that they can overcome the foe with "absolutely no life."A majority of the episode takes place in World of Warcraft, and the in-game choreography is superb. The episode is more of an homage to WOW than a satire, though it has its moments of absurdities (especially when involving the Blizzard staff). It's the hardcore World of Warcraft players that get the butt of most jokes. Portrayed as overweight, Rockstar-drinking, pimple-faced nerds with carpal tunnel syndrome, these "pros" are shown as possibly having even less than no life. It's the craziness you would expect from Parker and Stone, with due respect given to the source material. Relation to video games aside, it's a great social satire that ranks with some of the better episodes."Scroll over him with your mouse cursor and ... right click!"[Update 1: Here's another take on the episode from sister site TV Squad. 2: Grab the entire episode over at You NEWB.]
