Sony Ericsson's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Paris/">Paris</a> wasn't the only perfectly good handset to go down with the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/04/uiq-out-of-money-liquidation-imminent/">sinking UIQ ship</a>, it seems. Remember that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/09/motorolas-texel-in-the-wild/">TEXEL</a> from back in the day? Yeah, well, it's reemerged more than a year later -- a year too late, may we add -- supposedly branded the ROKR E10, which would fall in line with the company's recent ROKR branding. Looks like the thing has undergone a bit of a metamorphosis over the course of its development (as all phones do), but let's not spend too long analyzing it -- it's based on UIQ, after all, which means that very likely been thoroughly wiped clean of Moto's launch schedule. Doesn't look half bad, but then again, what would this have that the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/04/24/sony-ericsson-w950i-4gb-musicphone-reviewed/">Sony Ericsson W950</a> didn't have three years ago?<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/motorola/" rel="tag">Motorola</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/symbian/" rel="tag">Symbian</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/26/dead-phone-walking-meet-the-uiq-based-motorola-rokr-e10/">Dead phone walking: meet the UIQ-based Motorola ROKR E10</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 26 Feb 2009 08:51:00 EST. The company's parents are unwilling (and / or unable) to pump any additional money into the failing software outfit, and considering that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/S60/">S60</a> has inherited the throne within the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/SymbianFoundation/">Symbian Foundation</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/22/sony-ericsson-says-uiq-is-teh-sux-probably-doesnt-bode-well-fo/">Sony Ericsson</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/22/motorola-abandoning-symbian-taking-a-breather-to-ramp-up-androi/">Motorola</a> have abandoned the platform, and all of its employees <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/07/uiq-technology-puts-entire-staff-on-notice-of-dismissal/">have been warned</a> of impending layoffs, there's really nothing left for UIQ to do than sell off its assets piecemeal to the highest bidders. Moto never had a lot of stake in the Symbian game to begin with, and what little it did have was in the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/UIQ/">UIQ</a> camp -- the camp being killed off in Symbian's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/symbianfoundation">transition to an open platform</a> -- and what's more, the company has made <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/01/motorola-flashes-its-oha-member-card-confirms-its-working-on-a/">no secret</a> of its ambitions to become an Android powerhouse. The scary part of the rumor, though, is that Moto will go through one heck of a launch lull in 2009 so that it can get Android stuff into the marketplace in time for the '09 holiday season. Now, if that means we don't have to worry about any more <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/V3/">V3</a> colors, more power to 'em -- but can Motorola really afford to go the better part of a year without any blockbuster phones at this point?<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://translate.google.es/translate?hl=es&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;u=http%3A%2F%2Fes.engadget.com%2F2008%2F12%2F19%2Frumor-motorola-abandona-symbian-definitivamente%2F&amp;sl=es&amp;tl=en&amp;history_state0=es|en|abandonar&amp;swap=1">Engadget Spanish</a>]<br /><strong><br />Update:</strong> <a href="http://www.mobileburn.com/news.jsp?Id=5619">Michael Oryl of <em>MobileBurn</em></a> points out that co-CEO Sanjay Jha has already announced that Motorola doesn't intend to make new Symbian-based handsets -- but the company is still on the Symbian Foundation's board. We know it's the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/24/engadget-holiday-gift-guide-2008/">season for giving</a> and all, but you're probably ready to stop being handed all these <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/29/sony-ericssons-paris-gets-another-postmortem-tease/">postmortem looks</a> at Sony Ericsson's P10 (Paris). The UIQ-based handset, which was inexplicably canned earlier this year, was recently acquired and handled by the SE lovers over at <em>SEMC Blog</em>. As with most <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/26/sony-ericssons-axed-paris-gets-video-review-heres-to-what-cou/">everyone else</a> that has been fortunate enough to play with this here slider, these critics also couldn't figure out why the firm didn't forge ahead with production. Of course, it could just be the sentimental factor making the phone feel a bit more awesome than it actually is, but even with a bit of bias taken into account, it still seems like a winner. Too bad the powers that be deemed it a loser. Check the read link if you're okay with one last shower of tears.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/sony-ericsson/" rel="tag">Sony Ericsson</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gsm/" rel="tag">GSM</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/edge/" rel="tag">EDGE</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hsdpa/" rel="tag">HSDPA</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/01/sony-ericssons-p10-paris-gets-another-hands-on-full-blown-re/">Sony Ericsson's P10 (Paris) gets another hands-on, full-blown review</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 01 Dec 2008 11:23:00 EST. Love <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/UIQ/">UIQ</a>? Well, bless your heart; we're sorry <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/22/sony-ericsson-says-uiq-is-teh-sux-probably-doesnt-bode-well-fo/">for your recent loss</a>. We're also sorry that you have to see this, the best picture gallery we've seen yet of Sony Ericsson's doomed <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Paris/">Paris</a> -- a phone that would've undoubtedly been the ultimate execution of UIQ and the very top model in the company's line (<a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/X1/">X1</a> possibly excepted, depending on your point of view) had it not been unceremoniously cut down before its prime. We take some comfort in knowing that enough prototypes made it out into the wild for high-quality pictures to show up, but for most of us, this is as close as we're ever going to get.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.slashphone.com/new-live-pics-of-sony-ericsson-paris-293442">Slashphone</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/sony-ericsson/" rel="tag">Sony Ericsson</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/symbian/" rel="tag">Symbian</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gsm/" rel="tag">GSM</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/edge/" rel="tag">EDGE</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hsdpa/" rel="tag">HSDPA</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/umts/" rel="tag">UMTS</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/29/sony-ericssons-paris-gets-another-postmortem-tease/">Sony Ericsson's Paris gets another postmortem tease</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sat, 29 Nov 2008 17:11:00 EST. Sony Ericsson sure knows how <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/09/12/sony-ericssons-w707-alicia-lives-again-in-spy-shots/">to toy</a> with the heartstrings -- 'course, one could argue that it's our own fault for delving beneath the surface and learning far too much about a handset that was never assured of a public release, but whatever. The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Paris/">Paris</a>, or <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/P5/">P5</a>, or the one that got away has been reviewed in a two-part video series over at <em>UIQ Blog</em>, and while the handset used was indeed a prototype, it's pretty much the most finalized version anyone ever saw. We wouldn't dare spoil anything in case you just can't take anymore positive press about a phone you'll never be able to own, but those with hardened hearts can hit the read link and mash play (twice).<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2008/11/24/sony-ericsson-paris-gets-reviewed-on-film-despite-being-killed-pre-production/">Boy Genius Report</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/sony-ericsson/" rel="tag">Sony Ericsson</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gsm/" rel="tag">GSM</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/edge/" rel="tag">EDGE</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hsdpa/" rel="tag">HSDPA</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/26/sony-ericssons-axed-paris-gets-video-review-heres-to-what-cou/">Sony Ericsson's axed Paris gets video review: here's to what could've been</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 26 Nov 2008 10:26:00 EST. Sure, it's just the reality of business and all, but it's no fun to hear that 270 staffers will soon be looking for employment when UIQ Technology finishes climbing into the grave. After <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/27/creation-of-symbian-foundation-means-heads-will-roll-uiq-slashe/">hacking 200 jobs</a> in June and being coined "<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/22/sony-ericsson-says-uiq-is-teh-sux-probably-doesnt-bode-well-fo/">dead</a>" by Sony Ericsson's Patrick Olson, <em>All About Symbian</em> has it that the company has put its remaining employees "on notice of dismissal." We're told that SE has agreed to "continue funding the company on a by month by month basis in order to allow it to investigate options for the future," but from the outside looking in, we'd say the outlook is bleak. Thankfully, it sounds like those affected will at least be assisted as they exit, but now would probably be an opportune time to shed a tear for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/UIQ/">UIQ</a> as we knew it.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/motorola/" rel="tag">Motorola</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/sony-ericsson/" rel="tag">Sony Ericsson</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/misc/" rel="tag">Misc</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/07/uiq-technology-puts-entire-staff-on-notice-of-dismissal/">UIQ Technology puts entire staff on notice of dismissal</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 07 Nov 2008 16:42:00 EST. And growing. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/09/09/symbian-foundation-nabs-opera-ktf-uiq/">And growing</a>. Merely a month and change after coaxing the likes of Sharp, Opera Software, South Korea's KTF, and UIQ to join the perpetually raging party, along comes word that a dozen more have confessed their allegiance. During the first day of the 2008 Symbian Smartphone Show, we were told that over fifty companies were now in support of the Foundation, including twelve newcomers; in <strike>no particular</strike> alphabetical order, they are ARM, CIeNET, Flander, FUJISOFT, Huawei, Inmote, InnoPath Software, Red Bend, Scalado, Symsource, TRANGO Virtual Processors and Visa. The outfits are all planning to band together in order to create "the world's most open platform for mobile devices" when operations begin in 1H 2009, but until then, everyone's just taking an extended vacation and heading to Fiji to "brainstorm."<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.mobileburn.com/news.jsp?Id=5542">Mobileburn</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/symbian/" rel="tag">Symbian</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/misc/" rel="tag">Misc</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/26/symbian-foundation-grabs-a-dozen-more-members-arm-huawei-incl/">Symbian Foundation grabs a dozen more members, ARM / Huawei included</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sun, 26 Oct 2008 20:19:00 EST. Seeing how SE has always been UIQ's biggest proponent in the face of the much larger, much more influential <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/S60/">S60</a>, those are harsh, biting words that probably spell doom for the platform -- especially in light of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/27/creation-of-symbian-foundation-means-heads-will-roll-uiq-slashe/">recent layoffs</a> and integration with the Symbian Foundation as they push toward a single, unified Symbian stack. For what it's worth, there's no indication that Moto has given up on it, having just recently released the UIQ-powered <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Z10/">Z10</a>, but since when can Moto singlehandedly save a platform -- especially when they refuse to release the devices globally?<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.gsmarena.com/uiq_is_going_nowhere_sony_ericsson_are_done_with_it-news-640.php">GSMArena</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/software/" rel="tag">Software</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/motorola/" rel="tag">Motorola</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/sony-ericsson/" rel="tag">Sony Ericsson</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/symbian/" rel="tag">Symbian</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/22/sony-ericsson-says-uiq-is-teh-sux-probably-doesnt-bode-well-fo/">Sony Ericsson says UIQ is teh sux, probably doesn't bode well for platform's future</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 22 Oct 2008 12:52:00 EST. <p>As smartphone platforms go, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/UIQ/">UIQ</a> is a pretty underserved one; it just doesn't command enough of a following (by either manufacturers or end users) to justify boatloads of serious third-party development. That's why we're especially delighted to see that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/digia">Digia's @Web</a>, a Webkit-based browser with touch control and desktop-grade rendering capabilities, has emerged from beta and gone live. The full version's not a free download -- you'll pay 8 (about $11) for the privilege, in fact -- but for diehard UIQers looking for a way to rock the interwebs, this is probably the ticket.<br />

<div align="left"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/09/28/slingplayer-mobile-heads-to-symbian/">SlingPlayer</a> Mobile's not a new thing, that is, unless you're running with a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tags/uiq">UIQ</a> handset. Sling media have been teasing with this for what seems like ages and finally clients for Sony Ericsson's W960i, P1i, P990i, and G900i -- only via WiFi for that one -- have surfaced and can be grabbed now. Of course, that's not to say it won't work on whatever else you're using and seeing as they're offering a free trial, why not give it a whirl? Oh, and we'd love, and I'm sure your fellow readers would love to hear how you make out with whatever device, so do let us know. <br /></div>

In case you haven't noticed, today's <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/09/10/sling-medias-slingbox-pro-hd-slingcatcher-up-for-pre-order/">a pretty big day for Sling Media</a>. Not monumentally large or anything, but decently sized, we reckon. Of course, if you're a placeshifter and a UIQ user, you may disagree vehemently. Announced today, said company has unveiled a SlingPlayer Mobile version compatible with the UIQ interface on Symbian OS phones from Motorola and Sony Ericsson. For those out of the loop, said app will give Slingbox users the ability to "watch and control their home TV from a network-connected mobile phone." This time around, Sharp, Opera Software, South Korea's KTF, and UIQ are among nine new firms to throw their hats into the ring (in other words, if the Windows Mobile and Android camps aren't paying attention yet, they probably ought to be). UIQ might be the surprise here, considering that S60's perpetual second fiddle had <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/27/creation-of-symbian-foundation-means-heads-will-roll-uiq-slashe/">already made moves</a> to get ready for the Foundation's activities -- but whatever, good to hear that they're officially on board now.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/symbian/" rel="tag">Symbian</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/09/09/symbian-foundation-nabs-opera-ktf-uiq/">Symbian Foundation nabs Opera, KTF... Just over a month after <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/19/mark-space-offers-up-missing-sync-beta-for-s60-uiq-devices/">surfacing in Preview form</a>, Mark/Space has loosed the finalized version of The Missing Sync for Symbian on the world. Yes, Mac lovers, this means you can now get your beloved computer to play nice with your Sony Ericsson, Motorola or Nokia-based S60 / UIQ handset. There's even a swank Proximity Syncing feature that enables your mobile and Mac to exchange hellos (and sync, obviously) whenever they are within Bluetooth (around 30-feet) range. The download is available now for $39.95, while packs with more licenses are available for $169.79 and up. Who's game to give it a go and confess whether or not it was worth the coin?<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.tuaw.com/2008/07/29/mark-space-ships-missing-sync-for-symbian/">TUAW</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/software/" rel="tag">Software</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/motorola/" rel="tag">Motorola</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/nokia/" rel="tag">Nokia</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/sony-ericsson/" rel="tag">Sony Ericsson</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/symbian/" rel="tag">Symbian</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/30/mark-space-offers-up-missing-sync-for-symbian/">Mark/Space offers up Missing Sync for Symbian</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 30 Jul 2008 19:46:00 EST. Get your browsin' finger in championship condition, because it's about that time -- if UIQ's your weapon of choice, anyhow. The first beta of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/08/digia-web-brings-finger-controlled-web-browsing-to-uiq/">Digia's @Web finger-controlled browser</a> for UIQ handsets has now been delivered as promised, though free registration is required on the company's site to get hooked up. If you have a chance to check it, do let us know how it goes, won't you?<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/news/item/7509_Digia_Web_first_beta_available.php">All About Symbian</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/software/" rel="tag">Software</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/symbian/" rel="tag">Symbian</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/27/digia-web-outed-in-beta-form/">Digia @Web outed in beta form</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 27 Jun 2008 17:18:00 EST. Some of the first casualties of the merger come from UIQ, which has announced a total of 200 layoffs -- over half of its 375-strong staff. UIQ has never garnered quite the attention of its S60 sibling, and we wouldn't be surprised if the group were to end up being hardest-hit of the Foundation's puzzle pieces. Ironically, beleaguered Motorola is a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/15/motorola-buys-into-uiq/">stakeholder</a> in UIQ at the moment; as the parent goes, so goes the child, it seems.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/news/item/7529_UIQ_Announce_Planned_Layoff_of.php">All About Symbian</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/symbian/" rel="tag">Symbian</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/27/creation-of-symbian-foundation-means-heads-will-roll-uiq-slashe/">Creation of Symbian Foundation means heads will roll: UIQ slashes 200 jobs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 27 Jun 2008 00:16:00 EST. Yeah, the just-announced <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/C905/">C905</a> plugs a gaping hole in the high end, but Sony Ericsson's in desperate need of as many smartphones as it can get its hands on right now -- and a smartphone is one thing the C905 is not. The flagship <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/P1i/">P1i</a> isn't getting any younger, neither the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/10/sony-ericssons-g700-and-g900-touchscreen-organizers/">G700 nor G900</a> are inspiring a lot of emotion, and the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/M610i/">M610i</a> (which wasn't particularly fascinating to begin with) was canceled before it ever hit the market. Could the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Paris/">Paris</a> -- or P5, or P10, or whatever it's called -- and the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/beibei">G702 BeiBei</a> have met the same fate? That's what the Unofficial Sony Ericsson Blog is claiming, suggesting that intense criticism from sites that got early peeks at the devices let to their untimely demise while leaving the window open for a possible limited release in Asia (not unlike the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/search/?q=mpx">Motorola MPx</a>, if our memories serve us correctly). The way we see it, Sony Ericsson's just a <em>little</em> too oblivious to be that responsive to the user community (case in point: M2 cards), so we're more keen to chalk it up to technical glitches or a homegrown realization that the devices just weren't what the market needed. By the same token, it seems like they can't afford to throw these efforts out the door altogether; it'd put them hopelessly far behind the competition in the smartphone arena, so hopefully they're just retooling and learning some lessons as they go.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/sony-ericsson/" rel="tag">Sony Ericsson</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/symbian/" rel="tag">Symbian</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gsm/" rel="tag">GSM</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/edge/" rel="tag">EDGE</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hsdpa/" rel="tag">HSDPA</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/umts/" rel="tag">UMTS</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/20/sony-ericsson-deep-sixes-paris-and-g702/">Sony Ericsson deep-sixes Paris and G702?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 20 Jun 2008 21:29:00 EST. Mark/Space's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/MissingSync/">Missing Sync</a> -- an OS X lovers best friend -- has just loosed the Symbian Public Preview for all who dare to download. Currently, the build stands at v1.0.0 (028 Preview), which suggests that there are quite a few bugs just waiting to be discovered. Still, those handling S60 / UIQ-based mobiles can certainly give it a go and see just how effective it is at syncing information between your Mac and that beloved handset. If there are two words that are music to the ears of anyone looking to browse websites effectively on their phone, they've gotta be "WebKit" and "finger control." <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/s60touch">S60 Touch</a> is moving Nokia squarely in that direction, and the other half of the Symbian puzzle, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/UIQ/">UIQ</a>, is getting some love now as well. Digia is preparing its @Web browser, which claims to allow effective finger-based control of its WebKit-based browser -- though we're not lighting the fireworks and popping the champagne just yet since the effectiveness of finger control varies widely from implementation to implementation, and @Web's public beta won't be ready until some time later this month. Stay tuned, G900 owners (and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/G702/">G702</a> hopefuls).<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.phonemag.com/first-full-finger-controlled-browser-for-uiq-available-063055.php">PHONE Magazine</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/software/" rel="tag">Software</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/symbian/" rel="tag">Symbian</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/08/digia-web-brings-finger-controlled-web-browsing-to-uiq/">Digia @Web brings finger-controlled web browsing to UIQ</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sun, 08 Jun 2008 18:55:00 EST. If you just can't get enough news about Sony Ericsson's forthcoming Symbian UIQ touchscreen phone -- currently known as <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Paris/">Paris</a> -- perhaps this promo video of the thing in action can help. Sure, these appears to be pre-renders, but it does whet the appetite for things to come with the device, and who can complain about that pop-up weather app and confirmation that this <em>will</em> have a flash for its camera? Also, the dude in the clip sports a totally stylish cardigan. Sony Ericsson's leaky enough so that we've had no problem believing that the BeiBei is dead real, but as we've seen with the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/31/sony-ericsson-m610i-offered-through-ebay-not-sony-ericsson/">M610i</a>, a very real and very well-developed Sony Ericsson prototype by no means guarantees a release. That being said, we're starting to get pumped that this one might live long enough to see a store shelf or two -- particularly considering that it's said to rock <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/27/uiq-3-3-announced/">UIQ 3.3</a> and looks a heck of a lot better now in its dark, handsome color scheme that the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/12/sony-ericssons-beibei-to-be-unveiled-wednesday/">last time we saw it</a>. So, anyone want to get a launch date pool going? This quarter? Next? 2009?<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://blog.se-nse.net/2008/04/19/further-beibei-leaks/">Unofficial Sony Ericsson Blog</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/sony-ericsson/" rel="tag">Sony Ericsson</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/symbian/" rel="tag">Symbian</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gsm/" rel="tag">GSM</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/edge/" rel="tag">EDGE</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hsdpa/" rel="tag">HSDPA</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/umts/" rel="tag">UMTS</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/21/more-shots-of-sony-ericssons-still-unannounced-beibei/">More shots of Sony Ericsson's still-unannounced "BeiBei"</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 21 Apr 2008 15:01:00 EST. Ahead of CTIA -- and ahead of a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/25/windows-mobile-6-1-being-unveiled-next-week/">possible Windows Mobile 6.1 announcement</a> -- UIQ Technology has announced that UIQ 3.3, based on a Symbian 9.3 foundation, is now available to manufacturers. It's not a revolutionary build by any stretch of the imagination; in fact, the firm itself says that it includes "incremental enhancements" designed to keep up with changing requirements in the marketplace. Headlining features include Opera 9.5, support for Opera Widgets (widgets do seem to be the rage in mobile these days), and a dedicated widget "dashboard" for managing the little bits and pieces of content the user is tracking. The 3.3 SDK is already available, so with any luck, we should see devices in the marketplace before the century's out.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/uiq-3-3-announced/">UIQ 3.3 announced</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/uiq-3-3-announced/#722183"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgetmobile.com/media/2008/03/uiq-3-3-picture-gallery_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/uiq-3-3-announced/#722182"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgetmobile.com/media/2008/03/uiq-3-3-calendar_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/uiq-3-3-announced/#722181"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgetmobile.com/media/2008/03/uiq-3-3-app-launcher_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/uiq-3-3-announced/#722180"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgetmobile.com/media/2008/03/uiq-3-3-rss_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/software/" rel="tag">Software</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/symbian/" rel="tag">Symbian</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/27/uiq-3-3-announced/">UIQ 3.3 announced</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 27 Mar 2008 12:40:00 EST. <div align="left">There you go, now all you <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/uiq">UIQ3</a> types can finally raise your mobiles and celebrate a bit of native love by way of Google Maps for mobile designed specifically for your devices. For those that don't know -- or don't care -- the native app will likely be able to take advantage of your device's touchscreen, full screen mode, and will support <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/12/04/google-maps-for-mobile-adds-my-location-feature-no-gps-needed/">My Location</a>. Sure, we know that Palm, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, Symbian S60, and iPhone have had this for just about forever in mobile terms -- since months is this biz is like years in others. Though, we feel that the UIQers left out in the cold deserve their day in the sun. So, go forth, install, and get properly oriented Google-style.</div>

The Unofficial Sony Ericsson Blog is reporting that Sony Ericsson's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/10/two-for-the-cyber-shot-crowd-sony-ericsson-intros-c702-and-c902/">rather</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/10/sony-ericssons-g700-and-g900-touchscreen-organizers/">stellar</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/10/sony-ericssons-xperia-x1-qwerty-with-windows-mobile-and-hsupa/">showing</a> at Mobile World Congress isn't quite over yet. As you might recall, the joint venture <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/11/07/sony-ericsson-pwns-uiq-literally/">owns UIQ</a>, so it would make some good sense that it'd save a couple surprises for UIQ's MWC press conference, which doesn't go down until the tail end of the show on Wednesday. One of those surprises might just be this, a UIQ-powered candybar going by the codename "BeiBei" that features a dizzying (and frankly, nonsensical) array of navigation buttons and a fairly buttoned-up appearance that should appeal to businessfolk. Another possible UIQ debut is said to be "Paris," a higher end device. If this all pans out, it was rather brilliant of Sony Ericsson to let the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/10/sony-ericssons-xperia-x1-qwerty-with-windows-mobile-and-hsupa/">X1</a> fervor calm down before launching another volley, wasn't it?<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/sony-ericsson/" rel="tag">Sony Ericsson</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/symbian/" rel="tag">Symbian</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/12/sony-ericssons-beibei-to-be-unveiled-wednesday/">Sony Ericsson's "BeiBei" to be unveiled Wednesday?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 12 Feb 2008 02:55:00 EST. The Z10's fresh out of the gate, but it probably serves Motorola well to be thinking well, well ahead -- like <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/12/19/a-teaser-shot-of-motorolas-5-megapixel-multimedia-maven/">5 megapixels</a> worth of ahead, for example. The so-called <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/10/motorolas-2008-lineup-leaked-in-amsterdam/">Z12 "Skarven"</a> has been rumored for a few months now, and this fairly legit looking shot claims to have a wide swath of the Z series lined up for a family portrait: Z8, Z10, and Z12, from left to right. It allegedly runs UIQ (much like the two kick sliders before it) appears to feature some touch sensitive controls up front, and should feature the aforementioned high-end cam, integrated GPS, and a two-bedroom, one-bathroom flat for all we know. With any luck, we might find out a thing or two at <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/05/motorolas-mwc-teaser-it-doesnt-need-to-be-this-hard/">MWC</a> in a few days.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/motorola/" rel="tag">Motorola</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/symbian/" rel="tag">Symbian</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/05/motorola-z12-in-the-wild/">Motorola Z12 in the wild?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 05 Feb 2008 19:19:00 EST. Pay close attention here -- odds are this is as close as you'll ever get to the mythical <a href="http://www.engadget.com/search/?q=M610i">M610i</a> from Sony Ericsson. For most of us, that's just fine, but for others, this could be a pretty heart-wrenching 9 minutes and 28 seconds as our Polish reviewer takes us through a painstakingly detailed rundown of the stillborn UIQ handset's hardware and software. The video's host takes note that the phone features WiFi, an Opera-based browser (labeled as "experimental" but flawless in real-world use), a 208MHz processor, 128MB of RAM along with about 181MB of user storage, and Bluetooth; what the phone <span style="font-style: italic;">doesn't</span> feature is a camera, and that's what would've made the device a potentially compelling choice for buttoned-up business types that can't have a cameraphone (read: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/20/hands-on-with-the-sony-ericsson-p1i/">P1i</a>) on the premises. Keep your chins up, though, UIQ faithful -- this thing's so stale at this point that we've gotta believe there's already something better in the pipe.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://my-symbian.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=35628">My-Symbian.com</a>]<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/24/sony-ericsson-m610i-may-not-be-released-but-its-reviewed/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sony Ericsson M610i may not be released, but it's reviewed</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/sony-ericsson/" rel="tag">Sony Ericsson</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/symbian/" rel="tag">Symbian</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/24/sony-ericsson-m610i-may-not-be-released-but-its-reviewed/">Sony Ericsson M610i may not be released, but it's reviewed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 24 Jan 2008 06:56:00 EST. The <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2007/02/12/motorolas-motorizr-z8-a-symbian-kick-slider-with-hsdpa/">Z8</a> is <em>so</em> 2007, and we're ready for something new to satisfy our insatiable banana phone needs. Technically this form factor is called a "kick slider," yes, we understand that, but who wouldn't rather own and use a banana phone? Anyway, the <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2008/01/07/motorola-rocks-the-z10-banana-slider/">Z10</a> is a marvelously attractive phone, owing largely to a tastefully metallic casing that's reminiscent of the platinum V3xx (and we mean that in a complimentary way). Our time with the phone was all too brief, but we got the impression that the Z10's implementation of UIQ -- like the Z8's before it -- is an awesome implementation of Symbian that could easily give S60 a run for its money if only Motorola would take the time and R&amp;D dollars to proliferate these kinds of phones a little bit more than they do. Sadly, the Z10 features HSDPA only on the 2100MHz band, and we got absolutely no impression from Team Moto that there'd be any Americanized version on the way. Lucky you, Europe!<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hands-on-with-the-motorola-z10-banana-slider/">Hands-on with the Motorola Z10 banana slider</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hands-on-with-the-motorola-z10-banana-slider/#562769"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/01/motorola-ces-2008-z10-hands-on-00-sm_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hands-on-with-the-motorola-z10-banana-slider/#562788"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/01/motorola-ces-2008-z10-hands-on-01-sm_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hands-on-with-the-motorola-z10-banana-slider/#562781"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/01/motorola-ces-2008-z10-hands-on-02-sm_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hands-on-with-the-motorola-z10-banana-slider/#562777"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/01/motorola-ces-2008-z10-hands-on-03-sm_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hands-on-with-the-motorola-z10-banana-slider/#562771"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/01/motorola-ces-2008-z10-hands-on-04-sm_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cellphones/" rel="tag">Cellphones</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handhelds/" rel="tag">Handhelds</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/07/hands-on-with-the-motorola-z10-banana-slider/">Hands-on with the Motorola Z10 banana slider</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 07 Jan 2008 02:47:00 EST. Originally rumored for an announcement as early as tomorrow, icaka over on Esato's forums is now reporting that Sony Ericsson's new be-all, end-all superphone -- the so-called P5i -- has been sent back to the shop for retooling and won't make a public debut until May or June of next year. While it could be argued that the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/20/hands-on-with-the-sony-ericsson-p1i/">P1i</a> is hot (or at least warm) off the factory line, a top-5 phone manufacturer certainly can't rest on its laurels -- and if the listed specs here are even close to accurate, they're staying up on their game: think 2.8 inch VGA display, integrated GPS, WiFi, 5 megapixel camera with autofocus, HSUPA (yes, UPA, not DPA), and 128MB of RAM on board. Even better, it'll all be packed into a slim, light slider form factor that allegedly looks something like this concept art. Sounds just a smidge too good to be true, we know. Then again, by the time mid 2008 rolls around, is there any line item here that shouldn't be standard fare on a high end handset? Here's hoping!<br /><br />[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/sony-ericsson/" rel="tag">Sony Ericsson</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/symbian/" rel="tag">Symbian</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gsm/" rel="tag">GSM</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hsdpa/" rel="tag">HSDPA</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/umts/" rel="tag">UMTS</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hsupa-1/" rel="tag">HSUPA</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/11/14/sony-ericsson-releasing-p5i-superphone-mid-2008/">Sony Ericsson releasing P5i superphone mid-2008?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 14 Nov 2007 20:27:00 EST. Nokia, Microsoft and Symbian made it most clear today that they don't perceive danger from the new initiative and corresponding Android OS, with Nokia stating it quite bluntly: "We don't see this as a threat." Microsoft was a bit more on the defensive. "It really sounds that they are getting a whole bunch of people together to build a phone and that's something we've been doing for five years," said Scott Horn, from Microsoft's Windows Mobile marketing team. "I don't understand the impact that they are going to have." The Symbian folks stated the obvious: "If Google was not involved the industry would have just yawned and rolled over," said John Forsyth of Symbian. "We take it seriously but we are the ones with real phones, real phone platforms and a wealth of volume built up over years." UIQ was a bit more optimistic about the OHA, saying that "Generally, it's positive for the industry." Apple wasn't as commital either way. Somewhere below the mighty <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/20/hands-on-with-the-sony-ericsson-p1i/">P1i</a> in Sony Ericsson's UIQ-based smartphone lineup lies the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/02/15/sony-ericssons-m600-qwerty-keypad-rocks/">M600</a>, a phone that introduced the world to one of the most bizarre QWERTY keypad styles we've ever seen -- a style Sony Ericsson continues to sporadically use today. Thing is, the M600's getting awfully long in the tooth, and we've been waiting on the long-rumored (and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/05/20/sony-ericsson-m610i-lizy-sees-fcc-approval/">FCC-confirmed</a>) M610 for a long freakin' time now. It may still be getting tweaked deep within Sony Ericsson's labs, but at least one prototype example has strayed far enough from home to find itself listed on eBay's German site. Bearing the trademark "SE123" found on prerelease Sony Ericssons, the thing certainly looks legit -- though we're not really convinced it looks better than the M600 it's destined to replace. Then again, maybe that's why it hasn't been announced yet.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.unwiredview.com/2007/10/31/sony-ericsson-m610i-business-smartphone-prototype-for-sale-on-e-bay-in-germany/">Unwired View</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/sony-ericsson/" rel="tag">Sony Ericsson</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/symbian/" rel="tag">Symbian</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gsm/" rel="tag">GSM</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/edge/" rel="tag">EDGE</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/umts/" rel="tag">UMTS</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/31/sony-ericsson-m610i-offered-through-ebay-not-sony-ericsson/">Sony Ericsson M610i offered through eBay, not Sony Ericsson</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 31 Oct 2007 16:49:00 EST. <div style="text-align: left;">This looks to be a pretty handy app, rotateMe for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/symbian">Symbian</a> OS 3rd edition devices -- a version for UIQ is also available -- lets you quickly switch between portrait and landscape modes on your handset. The neat bit is that by apparently making use of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/19/nokia-n95-8gb-gets-the-unboxing-treatment/">N95</a>'s camera sensor, iPhone-like switching will become possible with the upcoming v2.0 software. Word has it that we can expect the auto switch feature in November but until then you can either run it manually or just watch the vid after the break again and again.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/news/item/6153_iPhone-like_screen_auto-rotati.php">All About Symbian</a>]</div>

<div align="left">We'd already <a href="http://motorola.engadgetmobile.com/2007/09/13/motorola-z10-landing-in-october/">heard</a> that Motorola's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/02/12/motorolas-motorizr-z8-a-symbian-kick-slider-with-hsdpa/">Z8</a> successor, the Z10, would be landing in October (or <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/18/two-new-moto-handsets-outed-say-hello-to-the-rizr-z10-and-rokr/">sometime in Q4</a>), and it now looks to have indeed made it out into the wild, as evidenced by the above shot courtesy of the TamsS60 blog. In case you missed it, this one runs on Symbian 9.02 with the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/15/motorola-buys-into-uiq/">UIQ</a> 3.2 interface, and packs a 3.2 megapixel camera, quad-band GSM / EDGE and HSDPA connectivity, 90MB of internal storage, and a microSD slot for expansion, among other features. According to TamsS60, it also boasts a so-called "video slideshow" mode that'll let you piece together a presentation consisting of text, images and video on the fly. Hit up the read link below for a couple of even blurrier shots.<br /></div>

Moto's been warming up to UIQ, the Symbian shell favored by Sony Ericsson -- problem is, Sony Ericsson <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/11/07/sony-ericsson-pwns-uiq-literally/">owns 100 percent</a> of the platform company, which we presume makes for some awkward conversations between UIQ and Moto about the manufacturer's future products (seriously, would <em>you</em> want to share your most closely guarded secrets with a competitor's division?). It's all good, though: Moto's agreed to take 50 percent of UIQ off Sony Ericsson's hands, with both companies saying that they'll be working together in the future to push UIQ and its development platform. Of course, Motorola's commitment to Windows Mobile still seems plenty strong, but we're all for smartphone diversity.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/software/" rel="tag">Software</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/motorola/" rel="tag">Motorola</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/symbian/" rel="tag">Symbian</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/15/motorola-buys-into-uiq/">Motorola buys into UIQ</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 15 Oct 2007 12:01:00 EST. <div align="left">Motorola is expecting a couple new and rather glossy additions to its family, namely the <a href="http://motorola.engadgetmobile.com/2007/09/13/motorola-z10-landing-in-october/">RIZR Z10</a> (pictured on left) and the <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2007/08/31/motorolas-bizarre-motorokr-e8/">ROKR E8</a>. The E8's face will between various modes based on what you're doing, from keypad to music controls for example, it also has some tactile feedback so you know you've actually input something on its smooth black surface. The ROKR E8 has a multi function "Omega Wheel" for zooming through your tunes and navigating, 2GB of internal storage, expansion via microSD, and the sad word -- rumor of course, so we can hold out hope -- that it won't feature 3G connectivity. The RIZR Z10 is a Symbian 9.02 handset sporting the ever so lovely <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2007/05/22/skype-coming-for-uiq-3/">UIQ 3.2</a> interface, quad-band GSM / EDGE, HSDPA in some alien frequency, a 3.2 megapixel shooter, 90MB of internal storage with the old standby, microSD, if you need more space. The E8 should be landing Q1 of 2008, and the Z10 should be shipping Q4 this year for round about &euro;400 (about $550).<br /><br /><a href="http://www.unwiredview.com/2007/09/18/motorola-rokr-e8-music-phone/">Read</a> - Motorola ROKR E8<br /><a href="http://www.unwiredview.com/2007/09/18/motorola-rizr-z10-press-pics-and-specs/">Read</a> - Motorola RIZR Z10</div>

Believe it or not, Sony Ericsson's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/05/08/sony-ericsson-opens-the-gates-with-headset-3-more-handsets/">P1i</a> has one of the richest, most storied family trees in the smartphone world. Technically, it could be said that the phone can trace its roots all the way back to Psion's EPOC-based organizers, but more practically, the P1i is a direct descendent of the R380, the first Symbian-powered phone and a device that made more than a few jaws drop with its versatile design and expansive touchscreen. What's our point? Simply that this brushed metal-clad beast has some work to do to live up to its ancestry, lest a few P800s start rolling in their graves -- and with WiFi, a 3.2 megapixel cam, and UIQ 3, it seems equipped for the job. Yeah, the <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2007/06/14/sony-ericssons-new-mbw-150-bluetooth-watch-rocks-avrcp/">new batch of watches</a> is pretty cool, but let's be honest -- at the end of the day, the handsets themselves are the real deal, and Sony Ericsson didn't disappoint with today's reveals. The <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2007/06/14/gracenote-trumps-sony-ericsson-announces-w910-w960-and-k850/">Gracenote slip-up</a> outed the three hottest of the bunch, the K850, W910, and W960. The K850 is the follow-on to the lauded <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2006/02/28/sony-ercissons-wilma-k800-k790-cyber-shot-phones-get-offici/">K790 / K800</a> with a 5 megapixel cam, NetFront browser, and tri-band HSDPA (North American bands mercifully included) and quadband GSM plus EDGE. The W910 and W960 are beasts of Walkman phones, offering 3G data, 2 megapixel and 3.2 megapixel cams respectively, and -- in the case of the W960 -- UIQ 3.1 and a full 8GB of onboard storage. Also-rans in today's lineup include the not-for-US-consumption K530, a 14mm 3G candybar, and the low-end Z250 and Z320 flips. Look for 'em all in the second half of the year.
