Thief's narrative arc involves a familiar set of circumstances: a girl falling to her presumed death and the protagonist's struggle to fight on after that loss. Plus, old men in even older robes. You may have seen this video when it premiered during the weekend's VGX live show, if you made it more than two minutes in.

If you plan on camping out with us during our liveblog of tonight's three hour VGX 2013 awards show, you can get a head start on the evening's activities by checking out the schedule of events. Among the noteworthy events for the evening are 12 "world premieres" for games like Quantum Break, Titanfall and Broken Age. Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime will also take the stage for a game demo during the show's first hour. Given that an ad for a next-gen Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition showed up today, it would explain the slot for tonight's Tomb Raider-centric announcement during the first hour. Those that are in it for the awards will be interested to know that the Game of the Year winner will be crowned during the early parts of the show's second hour. Additionally, the Best Indie Game will be determined near the end of the show's second hour and Character of the Year announced during the third hour. A few of the awards segments will be determined by fan vote, dictating whether the the Best Action Adventure or Best Sports Game will be announced in the first hour and Best Shooter or Best Studio award will presented in the third hour.

An ad for Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition has appeared on Spike's VGX website, noting a release date of January 28 for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It encourages viewers to "watch the trailer," but clicking through to the game's site does not currently lead to a trailer for Definitive Edition. This year's reboot was supported with multiplayer DLC, but developer Crystal Dynamics noted in March that it did not have plans for single-player DLC. The contents of Definitive Edition will likely be revealed during tonight's awards show.

The Spike Video Game Awards, this year called VGX probably because it's so extreme, will be co-hosted by Joel McHale, the lovably sarcastic guy from Community and The Soup. He's not entirely new to the gaming circuit, having hosted Ubisoft's E3 press conference in 2009 and starred in Nintendo's pointedly viral 3DS ad last year. McHale joins Geoff Keighley on stage for a barrage of new game trailers and announcements, starting at 6PM ET on Spike TV and across a number of streaming services, including Steam. We'll be liveblogging the entire show and posting the news as it breaks, so think of us as another group of co-hosts. Less famous, silent, but still really cool co-hosts.

Tomorrow is Spike's annual video game awards, dubbed VGX this year. In celebration of the various nominees, Steam is running a special promotion full of tempting deals. You can snag BioShock Infinite for $10, Divekick for $5, Rayman Legends for $20 and Crystal Dynamics' Tomb Raider reboot for $10. On top of that, there's the oddly-priced Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon for $5.09 and Metro: Last Light for $13.59. You can skim through the rest of the deals over on Steam's sale page. The VGX live show kicks off tomorrow at 6pm ET (3pm PT, 11pm British) on Spike TV and via online streaming. We've already stocked up on Doritos and Mountain Dew in preparation for the show, and will be covering it in full through a live blog and posts surrounding the major announcements. Feel free to join us for the festivities!

  • Tomb Raider next-gen reveal teased, ports classified

A VGX reveal of Xbox One and PlayStation 4 ports for Tomb Raider is on the cards, after Square Enix responded teasingly to rumors this week. The Crystal Dynamics game cropped up on Brazil's ratings board with PS4 and Xbox One versions listed, while an Amazon Italy page (now removed) pointed to a PS4 port titled Tomb Raider: Definitive Version. "It's so hard to keep a secret these days!" a Square Enix representative told IGN when approached. "We appreciate all of the enthusiasm, however we don't have any details to share just yet. That said, we highly recommend you keep an eye on any major gaming events happening in early December." Given Square Enix's fondness for not responding to "rumor and speculation," we'd say it's time to raise some eyebrows. We can't say it doesn't make sense either: Lara's gritty reboot sold 4 million copies across five months on the current generation, and a next-gen port would help to stir interest in the already announced next-gen sequel. Or, Square Enix could just be being coy about revealing that sequel rather than any ports, regardless of any classifications or listings. We don't know what to read into the publisher's playful winks and knowing smiles, but it seems likely we'll get some Tomb Raider news in a couple of weeks, when Spike TV's VGX awards show hits our screens on December 7.

Spike TV puts this year's Game of the Year argument to public vote, asking players to pick their favorite nominees in the network's upcoming VGX awards. BioShock Infinite, The Last of Us, Tomb Raider, Grand Theft Auto 5, and Super Mario 3D World are in the running for the VGX Game of the Year award. Winners will be announced when the VGX broadcasts on December 7. Users can also vote in individual categories, which range from Best Shooter to Best DLC. Competition is especially fierce in the Best Voice Actor category, which pits Troy Baker up against himself thanks to his nominated performances as BioShock Infinite's Booker DeWitt and Joel from The Last of Us.
