VIA's no stranger to serving that crowd, but it's making a point of addressing home users who want this class of PC for DIY projects, like home media servers, with the ARTiGO A1200. The new design is still using the dual-core, 1GHz Eden X2 of VIA's usual embedded PCs at its heart, but it comes wrapped in a smaller, more eye-catching package with HDMI video out and support for Windows 7. That's not to say that the A1200 represents a softening, inside or out. The PC can still survive temperatures between 32F and 113F with dust resistance in the bargain, and there's an array of ports you're still less likely to find on an everyday computer, such as a CFast slot (for storage) and dual gigabit Ethernet jacks. The $320 it costs to buy the new ARTiGO today won't get you an OS, RAM or a hard drive, but its ability to survive for years in a hot, dusty closet just might be worth the cost.

Continue reading VIA ARTiGO A1200 lets you roll your own miniscule, fanless PC

VIA ARTiGO A1200 lets you roll your own miniscule, fanless PC originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 31 May 2012 09:42:00 EST. The board is compatible with Mini-ITX and MacroATX form factors, and comes with a VIA 800MHz processor, 512MB RAM, 2GB flash memory, and built-in (up to 720p) graphics. It's now producing the AMOS-3002, a Pico-ITX-sized PC intended for in-car infotainment and other situations where an embedded PC needs to have a little more juice for media tasks. The Eden X2 in question comes in a dual-core 1GHz flavor that's completely fanless, but it's fast enough to show 1080p video (when your car is parked, we hope) and can handle more intensive work like dual gigabit Ethernet jacks, optional 3G and even a 2.5-inch hard drive. That breadbox-sized shell can also take a lot of abuse, surviving temperatures between -4F and 140F as well as 50 Gs' worth of shock. You'll have to wait until your favorite car designer or digital sign maker uses the AMOS-3002 to see it in action, but until then, you can get the full details after the break.

Continue reading VIA unveils fanless, Eden X2-packing AMOS-3002, promises tiny dual-core PC in your car

VIA unveils fanless, Eden X2-packing AMOS-3002, promises tiny dual-core PC in your car originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 17 May 2012 18:17:00 EST. There's no list of which models specifically support it, and which can manage up to 720p streams, but owners can check the capabilities of their model on Vizio's website. The webcam itself features an HD camera and four built in mics, and clips directly on the top of Vizio's flatscreens. Assuming you're into videoconferencing from your living room, have one of the HDTVs and are ready to drop a benjamin and a half for the privilege, all that's left is to find one of the cameras, currently marked as sold out on Vizio and Amazon. Now, if we could just get an update on that $99 ARM-powered Google TV set-top box...
Skype videoconferencing app and add-on camera come to Vizio Internet Apps HDTVs originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 05 Mar 2012 05:31:00 EST. While this certainly affects TiVo's ability to offer the one box to search multiple services idea introduced with the Premiere, it could be more telling about Blockbuster's plans for the current incarnation of its internet movie service. As forum posters on TiVo Community point out, the list of supported devices is rapidly shrinking, with Vizio and Western Digital WD TV Live owners getting their own Dear John letters only a year or so after the app originally rolled out. Currently, the list of connected TV devices is limited exclusively to Samsung HDTVs and Blu-ray players, plus some cellphones and tablets. Once upon a time, Blockbuster desired an On Demand presence in "nearly every connected device" -- not to mention "major market presence" for the now Redbox-owned Express kiosks -- but after its purchase by Dish Network clearly those days are over. Now the only question is if / when we'll see a new service that better fits with the already announced Movie Pass package and what devices it might work on.
Blockbuster On Demand pulls back from TiVo and others, is it on its way out? originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 18 Feb 2012 19:16:00 EST. We won't make too much of it, but if you read last year's hands-on preview, unfortunately much of this is similar, as we mentioned when they were announced -- much of this tech was originally planned to ship in 2011. That said, while TBD is still the watchword when it comes to release dates and pricing, we're told highly anticipated sets like the first ultrawidescreen units should be available for preorder soon.

Gallery: Vizio Google TV, ultrawidescreen and Cinema 3D HDTV hands-on

Continue reading Vizio ultrawidescreen, Google TV and Cinema 3D HDTV hands-on

Vizio ultrawidescreen, Google TV and Cinema 3D HDTV hands-on originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 11 Jan 2012 02:50:00 EST. After lighting things up with new PCs and a 10-inch tablet, Vizio is returning to its roots by unveiling a series of new HDTVs during CES, along with a few old ones. Among its more conventional sets, the E3D series has been bringing value priced passive 3D since last year, but it will be joined by the M3D series in a 47- and 55-inch model, the latter of which includes a Bluetooth QWERTY remote. If that's not enough, users can step up to the R3D series which come in the same sizes and have better backlighting.

The more interesting news however, is that the 65-inch versions of both M- and R- lines feature VIA Plus, which is Vizio's customized spin on Google TV. We first got a peek at it last year, however the delayed introduction of Honeycomb and adoption of ARM processors likely doomed any chance of a release. In another blast from the past, Vizio has also queued up three 21:9 "CinemaWide" ultrawidescreen WFHD (2560x1080) models (above), in sizes of 50-, 58- and 71-inches with 3D and Yahoo! Widgets. We were heartbroken when we never saw these come home in 2011, although in all fairness no one else brought an ultrawidescreen flat-panel to us either so there's still an extremely rectangular space on our wall that needs filling. Prices and ship dates for all the new TVs are still TBD, and those without Google TV include Yahoo TV widgets. Check the press release after the break for the available details, before we check out the new models and try to find out if they'll actually arrive this time around.
Continue reading Vizio's CES 2012 HDTV lineup includes 3D, Google TV and ultrawidescreen... again

Vizio's CES 2012 HDTV lineup includes 3D, Google TV and ultrawidescreen... again originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 10 Jan 2012 08:00:00 EST. Fortunately we were treated to a splendid surprise, as a new device designed by VIA Technologies was hanging out on the desk like a villain. The handset is designated as the "Leo U8500" and is touted as one of the first phones containing a full ST-Ericsson chipset. The yet-to-be-branded Gingerbread device sports the NovaThor U8500 smartphone platform, which rocks a 1GHz dual-core ARM Cortex A9 CPU, Mali 400 GPU and 14.4Mbps HSPA+ radio. Its chipset supports cameras with up to 20MP sensors and 1080p HD video capture. While the phone is production-ready, it appears that VIA is still shopping for potential suitors, and it's most likely China-bound when all is said and done. We love a powerful punch in a puny package, and VIA's latest embedded Mini-ITX board is just that. You can have up to a 1.6GHz C7-D processor or dual-core 1.2GHz Nano X2 paired with 4GB of DDR3 memory and an onboard ChromotionHD 2.0 video processor that'll do hardware video acceleration up to 1080p. It's intended for Point of Sale terminals and the like but, at just 17 x 17cm, it could make for a potent little HTPC.
Continue reading VIA VB7009 Mini-ITX board intended for POS, but HTPCs might want a piece too

VIA VB7009 Mini-ITX board intended for POS, but HTPCs might want a piece too originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 06 Jan 2012 18:32:00 EST. Lenovo, along with VIA Technologies, has launched the A30 internet TV device that packs a 1.2GHz VIA Nano CPU and VX900 media processor. Further hardware details are scarce at this point, but we do know that the A30 will have a BesTV service providing new and exclusive content, including movies of unknown origin "within a month of their release date," along with picture-in-picture functionality and, of course, internet access. There's mobile functionality too, as your smartphone can serve as both the box's remote and as an additional screen on which to view content. Naturally, Lenovo's not telling how much it'll cost, but our friends in the Far East will be able to pick one up in Q1 of 2012. VIA is hardly the first hawker of x86-based chips to start bragging about its Android compatibility, but it certainly doesn't want to be left behind as the open source OS starts worming its way into more and more machines. The EITX-3002 is the first of its offerings to sport official support for Google's OS. At the heart of the Em-ITX board is your choice of a 1.2GHz NANO X2 or a 1GHz Eden X2, and a VX900H, which casn push 1080p video to dual monitors. The target devices are obviously touch-based systems like in-car entertainment computers and kiosks. To see the board in action head on after the break and, please, try to stay calm -- we all know how exciting Froyo-based kiosks are.
Continue reading VIA adds Android support to embedded x86 line (video)

VIA adds Android support to embedded x86 line (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 16 Dec 2011 04:12:00 EST. That VE-900 mini-ITX kit still too big for you, eh? Then check out VIA's latest pico-ITX alternative: the ARTiGO 1150 DIY nettop. It improves on last year's 1100 model with a dual-core Eden X2 processor clocked at 1GHz and a VX900H media system processor for accelerated decoding of video up to 1080p. The palm-sized chassis houses the usual HDMI and VGA outputs, gigabit Ethernet and four USB 2.0 host ports, while also leaving just enough room for you to install up to 4GB of DDR3 RAM, one 2.5-inch SATA HDD or SSD, plus optional WiFi and SD card reader modules. We've found the 1150 selling for $265, which strikes us as appropriately diminutive, but there's a promo video and press release after the break to help you weigh it up for yourself.
Continue reading VIA's ARTiGO 1150: a $265 barebones nettop with big potential (video)

VIA's ARTiGO 1150: a $265 barebones nettop with big potential (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 23 Nov 2011 01:06:00 EST. Last CES Vizio announced a slew of new LCD HDTVs with its passive glasses-compatible Theater 3D capabilities and Vizio Internet Apps built in, and now it's finally ready to announced the M-series midrange lineup is shipping nationwide. M3D models in various 40- and 50-inch sizes have been popping up over the last few weeks, featuring edge LED backlighting for between $1,039 (42-inch) and $1,649 (55-inch). Need something bigger on your wall? There's also a 65-inch version on the way in 2012, with a pricetag of $2,099. As usual, Vizio's displays bring a rather complete line of features without an ultra-high price tag, but there'd be more reasons to share the included four pairs of 3D glasses with friends if the NBA season would just ever start. As is, buyers will have to make do with whatever videogames and college sports they can find for now -- check after the break for more specs and prices.
Continue reading Vizio's M-Series Theater 3D TVs are officially available, at last

Vizio's M-Series Theater 3D TVs are officially available, at last originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 16 Nov 2011 08:00:00 EST. If you're looking to craft a small form factor HTPC to an equally small budget, then VIA's own-brand internals deserve some serious consideration. The company's 1.4GHz dual-core Nano X2 CPU was recently put to good effect in Zotac's ZBOX Nano VD01 and is now available as part of a DIY combo called the VE-900, which puts the processor on a compact mini-ITX motherboard alongside a VX900 dedicated media accelerator for smooth video handling up to 1080p. The board has a single PCI slot, room for up to 8GB of DDR3, two SATA pin headers and four USB 2.0 ports. The rear panel adds to this with HDMI and VGA video outs, three analog audio jacks, Gigabit LAN, four more USB 2.0 ports and other standard fare -- but alas, it seems that the $89 price tag won't fetch you digital audio outs or USB 3.0. You'll find a full PR and promo video after the break, plus some Nano X2 benchmarks at the More Coverage link.
Continue reading VIA offers $89 processor and motherboard combo for custom HTPCs

VIA offers $89 processor and motherboard combo for custom HTPCs originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 14 Nov 2011 08:39:00 EST. Zotac isn't the biggest name in computers, but the company does do one thing particularly well -- cram capable HTPC components in itty-bitty boxes for a reasonable price. VD01 series ditches more well known solutions from Intel and AMD for chips from VIA, specifically the Nano X2 U4025 CPU with its Chrome9 media processor. Inside is room for a 2.5-inch HDD and a single DDR3 slot, but you can get those pre-populated with a 320GB disk and 2GB RAM by opting for the Plus model. Outside is your usual selection of USB 3.0, 2.0, eSATA, Ethernet and HDMI ports while inside are both Bluetooth 3.0 and 802.11n radios. There's even an IR receiver and bundled remote to make this truly living room friendly. Check out the gallery below, as well as the PR after the break.
Seems like we can't go a week without another patent infringement lawsuit being filed, and this one's no different. Apparently, VIA Technologies, maker of fine computational processors, is mad as hell with Apple's allegedly infringing ways, and it's not gonna take it anymore. Filed in the US District Court in Delaware, VIA claims that Cupertino's iThings and Apple TVs infringe patent numbers 6,253,312, 6,253,311 and 6,754,810, which cover various microprocessor functions. A complaint's also been lodged with the ITC -- in order to hasten the settlement talks, no doubt. So, all that's left is the countdown until these two shake hands, exchange checks and go on about their business... preferably outside the courtroom.
VIA Technologies sues Apple for patent infringement originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 22 Sep 2011 22:32:00 EST. We know it's been a long wait since CES, but after getting pawed at by both Blake Griffin and yours truly, the Vizio Tablet is starting to show up in stores right about on schedule. Frequent Engadget commenter DaHarder took a step away from the Disqus box and snagged this tablet at a local Costco store for $329 ($20 off the regular price), an achievement also unlocked by the folks at Mobileslate. According to their reports you may have to ask around to find out if the VTAB1008 is actually in stock but it may be lurking along with its $40 Accessories Kit, while it's already showing in stock on the Vizio online store. Impressions so far suggest a "budget" tablet experience above that of the flood of craptablets with decent hardware and battery life, but a software experience behind the top of the line slates due to the custom UI, small internal storage and RAM and slower single core Marvell CPU. Our review is yet to come, but if there's around three bills burning a hole in your pocket and you've just got to have an Android tablet with integrated IR blaster, we're not seeing too many other options available.

Flush with cash, but not a fan of spending it on litigation? We hear you, and apparently so does HTC. The Taiwanese firm announced today it'll purchase S3 Graphics and its patent portfolio from VIA for a cool $300 million, giving the smartphone maker 265 new weapons in its IP arsenal. Also part of the deal is a perpetual license to the patents' former owner, so that the chipset manufacturer can keep cranking out silicon without fear of legal reprisal. Given HTC's competitors recently went on a giant patent shopping spree, we'd surmise that strengthening its warchest is, dare we say, quietly brilliant.
HTC acquires S3 Graphics and its prodigious patent portfolio, dares you to sue originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 06 Jul 2011 23:06:00 EST. Benchmarks can be a bit of a back and forth schoolyard screaming match -- there's plenty of yelling, but not always much brute force to back it up -- so let's take this case of 'he said / she said' with an even coarser grain of salt. BAPCo, a non-profit whose members include major tech industry heavyweights, slapped back at AMD today for publicly dissing the SYSmark 2012 benchmark it had an 80 percent hand in creating and for claming the group forced them out of the club. The chip maker had similar beef back in 2007 over Intel's benchmark-friendlier chips, and this appears to be the final straw that broke its GPU's back. On Monday, VIA and NVIDIA also joined the ranks of the recently defected, but refrained from any superfluous PR finger-wagging. Wherever the truth may lie, for sure someone's got a case of the green-eyed monster, and it's definitely not us. We're looking at you, AMD.
We already took a fresh look at the Vizio Tablet due this summer, but the company's main business is HDTVs and there it's on top of US LCD sales again, with more than 20 percent of the market in Q1. Of the top five selling TVs in Q1, four are Vizios priced at $698 or less, while the other is a $1,699 MSRP Samsung LCD. Vizio launched its lower end E3D line earlier this year, the next series on the way are edge-lit M3D models due in August and September that up the refresh rate to 240Hz, come with four pairs of passive 3D glasses instead of two and have a Bluetooth remote. Up next, the 21:9 ultrawidescreen sets we saw at CES are real and will ship in October as the Cinemawide series in 2560x1080 58- and 50-inch models. Finally, the top of of the line XVT 6 series will feature the new VIA Plus Google TV platform and are going to be available in 47- and 55-inch sizes, but won't ship until December There's still no prices for any of these yet, but we're going to guess they'll go low as they usually do. Check the press release for all the details after the break including a glancing mention of the Vizio Phone.
Continue reading Vizio extends its LCD HDTV sales lead; new 3D, VIA Plus and ultrawidescreen TVs are on the way

Vizio extends its LCD HDTV sales lead; new 3D, VIA Plus and ultrawidescreen TVs are on the way originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 22 Jun 2011 10:52:00 EST. Being Blake Griffin has its perks -- he's NBA Rookie of the Year and a millionaire, plus he's got the adoration of millions and the ability to posterize fools with prodigious power dunks. He also got the Vizio tablet before it goes on sale to the general public, and posted a video showing off his new VIA Plus-equipped slate. We're glad that Blake Superior's enjoying the tablet's portrait and landscape stereo speakers and its universal remote function... really, we are. But, we'd rather be watching him catch alley-oops and throw down windmills on a tablet of our very own -- c'mon Vizio, quit playing favorites.

[Thanks, Ben]

Update: Looks like you'll be able to join Blake on the Vizio bandwagon soon, as the folks at This is my next got a pic showing that Walmart's already putting the tablet's $349 price tag on store shelves.
Blake Griffin gets Vizio Tablet before you can, proves famous people get special treatment (updated) originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 14 Jun 2011 07:59:00 EST. Vizio hasn't had much to say about its tablet plans since it entered the fray at CES in January, but it looks like things are now starting to pick up again, and fast. We just got wind of a listing for a Vizio VTAB1008 tablet priced at just $349 in Walmart's system earlier this week, and now that same device has passed through the FCC -- which, if you place the two together, could well indicate that a launch may finally be imminent. Unfortunately, the FCC listing doesn't provide much in the way of details beyond the crude outline above and some expected specs (WiFi, Bluetooth and HDMI), but the agency has only been asked to hold back the confidential parts of the filing until August 30th, so we should at least know more by then at the latest.
Vizio's VTAB1008 tablet hits the FCC: your $349 slate now one step closer to shipping originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 10 Jun 2011 18:41:00 EST. Wait, Vizio's concocting a tablet? For those with chronic short-term memory loss, you may have forgotten that America's so-called low-cost TV leader branched out a bit during this year's Super Bowl, but it's been dead quiet on the tablet front ever since dropping the Via and sticking with Tablet. Looks like that's about to change, though -- a courteous tipster handed off the screenshot you see above, highlighting the appearance of a 'VTAB1008' within Walmart's inventory system. The device was just added a couple of weeks ago, and while we're still no closer to knowing if Vizio's done the right thing and settled on Honeycomb, we do know that it'll be pricing this thing competitively. How competitively? $349... competitively. We'll keep you abreast of any release dates we see, but for now, catch up by having a gander at our preview video from a few months back.
We covered lots of ground at this year's Computex, but here's one gem that slipped past our radar: the new Zotac ZBOX mini-PC, powered by VIA's latest dual-core processor. Measuring 12 x 12 x 4cm, this little beast runs on VIA's low-power Nano X2, which is available at speeds of either 1.2 or 1.6GHz, depending on your preference. It also comes equipped with native 64-bit software support, VIA's PadLock data encryption engine and is compatible with the company's other processors, including the Nano, C7, C7-M and Eden. Plus, there's an SD card reader, two USB 3.0 ports and HDMI and DisplayPort outputs. Availability and pricing remain a mystery, though we're certainly hoping it won't be as exorbitant as some other bite-sized PCs we've seen in recent months. Vizio posted a teaser on its Facebook page of new app updates for its Vizio Internet Apps platform, including this YouTube app that will come to the VBR122 and VBR133 series Blu-ray players first. Amazon VOD and web videos are apparently also on deck, but judging from the comments, owners of certain model TVs are still waiting for updates to flick on their USB connectivity, Hulu Plus, and other apps. So what if Apple might be suing your company for millions and billions of dollars? You're Cher Wang and Cher Wang shops wherever she damn well pleases. HTC's co-founder and Chairwoman was recently photographed taking a leisurely gander at Apple's wares, with husband Wen-Chi Chen -- who just happens to be CEO of VIA Technologies -- tagging along as well. The Palo Alto Geniuses look to have been their usual friendly selves, though their failure to put an iPhone in Mrs. Wang's hands qualifies as a major missed opportunity in our eyes.
Computex is coming up fast and with it we're expecting a slew of new gear. The event will also mark the first public showing of VIA's new x86 quad-core processors aptly named, QuadCore (pictured above center next to a Nano X2). The new procs are manufactured using 40nm processes and combine four Isaiah cores on two dies resulting in a Thermal Design Power of 27.5 watts. That low TDP allows VIA to make the nebulous claim that its first QuadCore L4700 processor is 21 percent more energy efficient than its nearest competitor while offering "awesome" multitasking and multimedia playback performance. Initially available at 1.2+GHz, the 64-bit native processor features adaptive overclocking (think Intel Turbo Boost) for dynamic clock adjustments up to 1.46GHz, a 4MB L2 cache, and 1333MHz front-side bus. Oh, and the QuadCores will be pin-to-pin compatible with VIA Eden, C7, Nano E-Series, and Eden X2 processors when they begin shipping in bulk in Q3. We'll bring you more on these supposed low-cost procs when we see them demoed first hand in Taipei starting May 31st. Until then, click through for the full press release or hit up the more coverage links below for an in-depth preview.

Continue reading VIA QuadCore processor combines low-cost and low-power with 'adaptive overclocking'

VIA QuadCore processor combines low-cost and low-power with 'adaptive overclocking' originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 12 May 2011 03:40:00 EST. The 32- and 42-inch versions of Vizio's E3D series HDTVs are now listed for preorder on Amazon at $499 and $699 just as our tipster indicated. The E3D320VX and E3D420VX are currently expected to ship in 3-5 weeks, which should also allow buyers interested in the new FPR-based Theater 3D technology to be among the first pick one up without heading to Walmart. Of course you still can if you want to, a 48-pack of paper towels should go well with your new 3DTV and its dual-sided QWERTY remote.
Remember that line of VIA navigators we peeked back at CES? Looks like today's your lucky day if you were holding off to procure one. TomTom just announced retail availability of the VIA 1505, 1535, 1405 and 1435 in North America, and all of 'em can also be picked up with lifetime maps and / or lifetime traffic. The 14xx models will be boasting a 4.3-inch panel, while the 15xx editions gain a 5-inch display; the whole lot includes the company's new fold-and-go EasyPort mount, and variants do seem to be available with Bluetooth and advanced voice recognition. Look for the gang to start populating shelves this weekend for $169 and up... if you can manage to find your local Best Buy, that is.
Continue reading TomTom VIA 1435, 1535, 1405 and 1505 navigators start shipping in North America

TomTom VIA 1435, 1535, 1405 and 1505 navigators start shipping in North America originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 01 Apr 2011 13:05:00 EST. The one detail we couldn't wrangle out of Vizio about its upcoming 3DTV line at CES was the price, but now a few midrange models have popped up on the company's website early with full information. The 47-, 42- and 32-inch E3D models sport $899, $729 and $549 pricetags and a date of "coming soon," following the precedent of the 65-inch model released last fall. If that's not cheap enough, one of our readers has provided information that Walmart expects to have the E3D320VX and E3D420VX available for $498 and $698, respectively, starting in April. All of these TVs are 1080p (at least in 2D), have WiFi and Vizio Internet Apps built in (with a new IR remote - Update: pictured after the break -- instead of the old Bluetooth QWERTY one) and come with two pairs of passive 3D glasses. We've seen 3DTVs debut at under $1,000 before and more than a few of last year's models have dipped to $800~ by now, but with a starting price this low and cheap accessories, we wouldn't be surprised if Vizio is celebrating sales wins again next year.
Following close behind the low-power Nano X2 comes the Eden X2, or what VIA is calling "the world's most power-efficient" fanless dual-core processor. While we've yet to see any official numbers, the original Eden did 500MHz on one watt of power, so we should see similarly thrifty specs here. Aside from that, the unit houses two 64-bit cores in a 21 x 21 millimeter package, is compatible with Windows CE and Linux operating systems, and was built using a 40-nanometer manufacturing process. The Eden X2 made its debut at the World Embedded conference this week, and should make it to the real world by the end of Q2. Full PR after the break.
Continue reading VIA says Eden X2 is world's most power-efficient dual-core processor

VIA says Eden X2 is world's most power-efficient dual-core processor originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 04 Mar 2011 02:25:00 EST. Industry analysts will reveal all the numbers later this week but according to Vizio its LCD HDTVs have outsold all others, again. Specifically, it has again rated as the #1 seller of LCDs in North America according to DisplaySearch and #1 seller of LCDs in the US according to iSuppli by carving out a 27.6% share of the market, the largest for any seller since 2004. We spoke with Randy Waynick, Vizio's chief sales officer (and star of that tablet-exposing Rose Bowl ad) and found Vizio's telling a very different tale about HDTV sales in 2010 than some of the competition.

In contrast to lower than expected sales from other manufacturers and retailers last year, especially when it came to 3D televisions and connected TV products, he claims demand was so high for the new Theater 3D HDTV with passive glasses they couldn't keep it in stock. He also attributed much of the sales growth to its strategy of offering higher end tech like local dimming LED backlighting and WiFi built in at lower prices than the competition, and plans to use its position as a market leader to push technology initiatives -- like passive 3D screens, where he echoed LG's claims that it tested far better than active shutter 3D with customers -- rather than follow them. Among some of us in the home theater community there's still, deserved or undeserved, a perception of the company as simply a cheap, low end manufacturer that's not as reliable as others but with results like these it looks like the rest of the market will be the ones with something to prove in 2011.
Vizio starts celebrating 2010 LCD sales wins early, has bigger plans for 2011 originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 21 Feb 2011 15:04:00 EST. Unfortunately, it isn't offering many more details than Sony or Vizio, and it's using both "coming soon" and "later this year" to describe the rollout on TVs from the two companies, which leaves open a depressingly long and confusing possible launch window -- we do know that Sony's Skype-ready Bravias will begin rolling out in February, but Sony hasn't confirmed a release date for the required webcam. What's more, Skype has also confirmed that it's working with Panasonic and Sony to bring some added connectivity to your existing TV with the aid of a Skype-enabled Blu-ray player and webcam -- look for those "soon."
Skype gets official with apps for Sony Bravia, Vizio VIA TVs originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 06 Jan 2011 13:41:00 EST. Not that Las Vegas is terribly difficult to navigate, but TomTom's unveiling its latest PNDs here at CES, regardless. Up first is the GO 2505 M LIVE, the followup to the Go Live 1000 that was launched last April. This one packs a familiar design, with a 5-inch glass touchpanel, Bluetooth handsfree calling support, pinch-to-zoom mapping and a newfangled voice recognition system. You'll also get the full suite of LIVE services, including TomTom HD traffic, local search, fuel prices and weather updates. It should be noted that said services rely on AT&T's wireless network, and this unit marks the first time that US motorists will have access to TomTom's HD Traffic. It'll hit retail in mid-2011 for $349, with a "trial subscription" of LIVE thrown in gratis. Moving on, there's the new VIA series of mid-range PNDs. The VIA 1405 and 1435 both sport 4.3-inch panels, while the VIA 1505 and 1535 inch up to 5.0-inches. The fourpack will be available with or without lifetime maps / traffic, and you'll get voice recognition and Bluetooth handsfree calling to boot. These will ship in mid-2011 as well with prices starting at $169, and you can catch the full release just after the break.

Vizio's already rolled out a whole range of new TVs that include Vizio Internet Apps, and it's now announced a bit of a bonus to go along with them -- both Hulu Plus and Blockbuster On Demand have been added to Vizio's roster, and will begin rolling out to all VIA-ready TVs this week. Both apps will also be headed to VIZIO 3D Blu-ray Players with Wireless Apps, but they'll apparently have to wait a bit longer. As Vizio notes, those are just two in a series of recently announced additions to the platform, which will also soon include MOG, OnLive, Namco Bandai, Skype and Vimeo, to name a few. We just had our first in-depth experience with the Vizio Tablet, the company's opening overture into the world of Android slates, and we've got to say -- we like what we see. The device -- which was just announced Monday afternoon along with the company's new smartphone, the Vizio Phone -- is still rather unfinished (the model we looked at was a hand-built device), but based on this early look, the company is moving down the right roads. We had a good chance to play around with the tablet, and we've got all the details, specs, and an in-depth video after the break!
VIA has officially announced its Nano X2 low power dual-core chip. The chip comprises two of VIA's 64-bit Isaiah architecture cores, found in previous single-core Nano CPUs. The processors come with native 64-bit software support, VIA's PadLock hardware security features, and VT CPU virtualization technology. The new Nano X2 chips are compatible with VIA's previous processors, including the Nano, C7, C7-M, and Eden, facilitating easy upgrades. The VIA Nano X2 processors are already currently available for OEMs, with systems featuring the chips expected in the first quarter of this year. Full press release is after the break
Continue reading VIA Nano X2 low power, dual-core chip gets official

VIA Nano X2 low power, dual-core chip gets official originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 04 Jan 2011 20:18:00 EST. No more dribs and drabs of information leaking out as Vizio has finally listed its entire 2011 LCD lineup, again featuring LED back & edge lighting across all models. That includes two ultrawidescreen 21:9 Cinema models in its Theater 3D line in 50- and 58-inch sizes, two VIA Plus TVs with Google TV in the XVT3D476SP and XVT3D556SP, and continuation of its existing Yahoo! Widgets based Vizio Internet Apps features including WiFi and Bluetooth QWERTY remote across TVs sized 22-inches and above. Check the press release after the break for all the models and what they offer, perhaps wisely there's no detailed information about when and for how much they'll be available just yet, so we'll still have to speculate about which models will represent the sub-$300 3D portion of the lineup.
Continue reading Vizio shows off its full 2011 HDTV lineup: ultrawidescreen, 3D, Google TV, widgets & all

Vizio shows off its full 2011 HDTV lineup: ultrawidescreen, 3D, Google TV, widgets & all originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 04 Jan 2011 08:04:00 EST. The OnLive MicroConsole is one way to get your streaming game fix, but here comes Vizio with four more -- the bargain television company just revealed that those brand-new VIA Plus HDTVs and Blu-ray players (as well as that VIA Tablet and VIA Phone) will come with OnLive on board. Despite running as an internet app on top of the existing Vizio hardware, we're told the service will support full 1080p resolution, stereoscopic 3D images, and OnLive's low-latency wireless gamepads too -- as Vizio's units will apparently support IEEE 802.15.4. While the jury's still out on when OnLive will actually be playable on touchscreens, CEO Steve Perlman says some games are being adapted to support touch right now, and that tablets that support external game controllers could also use OnLive normally. We've also got more good news for the home theater crowd, as OnLive's signed a deal with SRS, bringing 5.1 surround sound as a free update to all OnLive users early next year. Because there's nothing quite like having ears bombarded from all directions with digital explosions. PR after the break.
Continue reading OnLive turns into Vizio VIA Plus app, destined for TVs, tablets and phones

OnLive turns into Vizio VIA Plus app, destined for TVs, tablets and phones originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 04 Jan 2011 08:03:00 EST. We doubt we've seen all of Vizio's 2011 product lineup yet, but the latest information is that it's expanding upon the one Theater 3D TV model currently available with an entire line -- promising to offer 3D with passive glasses in sizes from 22- all the up to 71-inches. There are 21 models detailed in the press release after the break including LED edge lit LCDs, direct LED backlit models, ones with the Yahoo! Widgets VIA package and a couple of the new Google TV-powered models. No word on price or ship date yet, but the company is quick to point out that putting the 3D processing into the screen means cheaper movie theater-style 3D glasses with ostensible greater brightness and less flicker, plus compatibility with Oakley's "optically correct" specs.
