A fan-led localization group has released a translation patch for Sega's PSP tactical RPG Valkyria Chronicles 3, making the game playable in English for the first time. The patch requires a custom firmware-equipped PSP or PS Vita to play, along with a ripped UMD or digital PSN version of Valkyria Chronicles 3: Extra Edition. While the patch also works with the original version of Valkyria Chronicles 3, translators note that players will experience glitches during gameplay. After localizing the first two entries in the series on the PlayStation 3 and PSP, Sega declined to release a translated version of Valkyria Chronicles 3 in North America and Europe, citing low sales. The digital version of Valkyria Chronicles 3 is currently on sale for 980 yen (approximately $9.50 USD) from the Japanese PlayStation Network, making it an ideal time for series die-hards to test out the new fan-produced localization.

Sega isn't planning to localize PSP strategy RPG Valkyria Chronicles 3: Unrecorded Chronicles for North America or Europe. Gamespot confirmed the news in a recent interview with Sega's executive in charge of console sales, Hiroshi Seno. Sega suggests the PSP isn't popular enough in Western markets, and that Valkyria Chronicles 2 didn't sell well enough to justify localization. Asked if VC3 would be available as a downloadable Vita title, Seno said the publisher would discuss it with Sony. Valkyria Chronicles 3 sold 102,779 units during its launch week, the strongest debut yet for the series. Listen, if Sega wants to skip bringing VC3 overseas and diverts that budget into funding a console game like the original Valkyria Chronicles, we're all for that. At least, that's what we'll be telling ourselves for a while.

The video may be in Japanese, but it'll give you a good idea of your "Nameless" squadmates in the upcoming PSP sequel Valkyria Chronicles 3. Also, there's a justice-dispensing, purple-haired grandma soldier ... that's just too cool.

Yes, we're all still sore that Valkyria Chronicles 3 isn't bringing the series back to PS3, but the previous PSP sequel delivered a solid experience, so at least the quality isn't hurting. Check out the Japanese opener for the darker third installment after the break. Don't be fooled by the J-pop.

Valkyria Chronicles 3 may not mark the franchise's return to the PS3, but it does take the series into darker, more adult-themed territory. Gone are the school setting and happy-go-lucky characters. In their place are the "Nameless" -- a collective of criminals and social deviants serving the military in a side-story that takes place concurrently with the original's tale. Not only have the characters and story matured, but the presentation has as well. An updated UI and a more complex color palette make Valkyria Chronicles 3 look closer to the PS3 game. It's hard to pinpoint a single reason, but I walked away from the TGS demo impressed by how much better this sequel looked. It could be that the graphics have simply improved in the franchise's second outing on the PSP. The environment felt larger, and a bit more detailed, and other elements helped give the impression of a better looking game. The UI looks a bit sleeker, with helpful status icons appearing on the command map, highlighting characters with low HP, for example. Character portraits take much bigger prominence on the screen during the gameplay sequences and the manga-inspired cutscenes. The rich red hues and expressive portraits offer a visual "pop" that its predecessor lacked.

In what has become one of our favorite annual traditions, Japanese mag Famitsu has already begun unfurling announcements intended for the Tokyo Game Show, which kicks off this Thursday, September 16. Sega already revealed Valkyria Chronicles 3 (inadvertently), and Famitsu has confirmed it as a retail and downloadable PSP game set to debut in Japan on January 27, 2011. According to an Andriasang translation, Valkyria Chronicles 3 will be set in the same time period as the original PlayStation 3 game, but will follow a new cast of characters and a group dubbed "The Nameless." That's ... their name. Sega of America has yet to announce an English version of this strategy RPG, possibly because the higher-ups in the company haven't read the latest Famitsu yet.

  • Valkyria Chronicles 3 listed on Sega TGS schedule

Sega has apparently self-sabotaged its reveal of Valkyria Chronicles 3 for this Thursday at Tokyo Games Show. The publisher accidentally posted its schedule for the show (now removed), which had Valkyria Chronicles 3 listed on it. We've known for a couple weeks now that something Valkyria related was being premiered at TGS, ever since the teaser site went live. Of course, the one big question still hasn't been answered: will the game be for PS3 or PSP? [Thanks, Antony]

  • Sega teases 'top secret' Valkyria Chronicles project

A Sega-registered website is teasing an unveiling related to strategy RPG series Valkyria Chronicles -- possibly of a new sequel. Andriasang stumbled upon Code1935.jp, which features several Valkyria-esque soldiers' silhouettes, a tank and a missive that the "top secret" site is not to be opened until September 16. The date coincides with this year's Tokyo Game Show. What we can surmise from the site is that we are looking at a new Valkyria Chronicles, likely with a different squad -- perhaps not even Gallian. If "1935" in the website's name represents the setting, then it might take place during the events of Valkyria Chronicles 1. However, the large sword in the middle is unfamiliar, and "Altaha Abilia 422" doesn't ring any bells -- according to Wikipedia the slogan means "Always Ready." We'll be at the ready to share more, like if the series will continue on PSP or in some other unexpected form, when we gain more intel.

  • Sega registers Valkyria Chronicles 3 domain

Sega has registered a Valkyria Chronicles 3 domain name in Japan. As unearthed by Siliconera, the publisher parked valkyria3.jp near the end of May, which is similar to how the company named similar domains for previous entries in the series. Joystiq contacted Sega, but the company didn't have any statement to share on the subject. For fans of the fantastic Japanese strategy RPG series, the obvious question beyond the legitimacy of a third installment incoming is: Will the game be for PSP or PS3? We hope for the latter, but if Sega can make better returns on the cheaper to develop for handheld ... well, let's just keep hope alive. Perhaps the upcoming Tokyo Game Show will provide answers. Valkyria Chronicles 2 releases in North America on August 31.
