Rumors have been swirling that a Veronica Mars reboot is on the way and series lead Kristen Bell just confirmed it. She tweeted today that a new series is headed to Hulu, as are all of the back episodes. "Thank you to all the marshmallows for staying excited and to @Hulu for giving Veronica a chance to wear her big girl pants," wrote Bell. The original series ran for three seasons, but developed a strong and still very present following even in that short time. A follow-up movie came together in 2014 with the help of some avid crowdfunding.

Veronica Mars is the TV series you just can't ignore, it seems. Entertainment Weekly, Deadline, Variety and others have claimed that Hulu is "close to a deal" with Warner Bros. for a new season of Veronica Mars. Many of the details are up in the air, but it would include lead Kristen Bell (it damn well better) and creator Rob Thomas. Deadline and Variety understood it would be an eight- to ten-episode limited production. The project has been in development for "months," EW said.

  • Veronica Mars Ultraviolet digital copies frustrate many backers, Warner Bros. offers refunds

After an instantly successful $5.7 million Kickstarter campaign the Veronica Mars movie has finally arrived in theaters and at home, but that doesn't mean all is well. Digital copies of the movie for backers were distributed using codes for Flixster, Warner Bros.' Ultraviolet-connected movie site/service. Unfortunately, many users had issues signing up for the often-convoluted Ultraviolet login process, setting up the Flixster software to stream or download the video, accessing a copy outside the US, or actually getting overloaded servers to work. There are some who flew through the setup without issue, but an update by series creator Rob Thomas directs backers with problems to contact customer support. They'll help get things working, or provide a refund for purchasing the movie on another service like Amazon or iTunes. On (the also Flixster-operated) Rotten Tomatoes, Veronica Mars is showing a 98 percent audience rating and 76 percent overall, so once fans can sit back and and press play, it appears they're liking what they see. Not yet familiar? An unaired version of the original pilot is available for free on iTunes, and you can get caught up on the entire series on Amazon's Prime subscription service.

  • Amazon now indulges in your GI Joe fan fiction

Admit it -- as a kid, you got a little tired of the GI Joe team winning the battle in every cartoon episode. Wouldn't it have been nice if Cobra emerged victorious now and then? Thankfully for you, Amazon has just given you the freedom to rewrite your childhood memories: it has reached a deal with Hasbro to sell GI Joe fan fiction in Kindle Worlds. And if you didn't spend your youth watching animated soldiers, you'll be glad to hear Amazon has also scored licenses from Warner Bros. and Valiant Entertainment. The arrangements let you post stories set in Veronica Mars, the Pretty Little Liars spinoff Ravenswood and new Valiant comics like The Lizzy Gardner Files. Amazon's expansion still leaves just 20 Kindle Worlds to choose from, but it should please anyone who wants to give Cobra Commander his due. [Image credit: Pat Loika, Flickr]

  • CBS schedules premieres for Extant and Under the Dome, Amazon gets them days later

Last summer, CBS shared the financial load for its new show Under the Dome with Amazon by cutting a deal to stream episodes days after their broadcast, before the series even aired. This year, it's renewing the agreement for Under the Dome season two and extending it to cover a new show, Extant. Both are produced by Steven Spielberg's company, while the latter will star Halle Berry as an astronaut with a robot child, and another half alien/half human kid on the way. Under the Dome will return this year on June 30th with a premiere episode written by Steven King, while Extant premieres July 2nd. Amazon Prime subscribers can stream episodes of both four days after they air, just like last year, or download them to the newest Kindle tablets for offline viewing. Have Amazon Prime and need something to watch before then? If you listen to the Engadget HD Podcast you know our first answer is Justified, but another option is all three seasons of Veronica Mars. Amazon snagged that as a streaming exclusive as well, just ahead of the Kickstarted movie's release March 14th.

  • Kickstarter ends 2013 with $480 million in funding, proof that dreams came true

Kickstarter is now a relatively mature company, but that doesn't mean that it has stopped growing -- far from it. The crowdfunding pioneer says in its year-end review that it generated $480 million in pledges from three million people during 2013, a big jump from the $274 million and 2.2 million contributors that it attracted in 2012. It's also eager to show that the contributions of years past have led to real products. It notes that big-name 2012 projects like the Oculus Rift and Pebble reached backers last year, while more recent successes like the Veronica Mars movie are on the cusp of release. Not everything that Kickstarter touches will turn to gold, but its results suggest that crowd power is here to stay.

  • Crowdfunded Veronica Mars movie shows off its first trailer, hits theaters March 14th

Remember the crazy year that was 2013? Among the many things we recall, expansion of the crowdfunding phenomenon is definitely one and the Kickstarter that revived Veronica Mars was a special highlight. After nine years away Veronica Mars is finally back in her hometown of Neptune, CA and of course, has a murder mystery to investigate. Series creator Rob Thomas pushed the crowdfunding (it only took a few hours to hit the goal of $2 million) and served as writer/director along with co-writer Diane Ruggiero, with most of the original cast returning as well. Take a peek at the trailer here (along with a few of the other clips that have been released) and get refamiliarized with Kristin Bell and all the rest before the flick hits "select" theaters March 14th. According to the official FAQ, digital downloads are still planned for backers within a few days of the movie's theatrical release, and it should ship on Blu-ray/DVD in May.

  • Veronica Mars movie looks for crowdfunding, would have digital copies near release (update: funded!)

There's been no shortage of movie projects that lean on crowdfunding to get production underway. Producing a movie based on a major TV series like Veronica Mars, however? That's fresh. Creator Rob Thomas has obtained support from Warner Bros. and lead actress Kristen Bell for a Kickstarter funding drive that, if it hits its $2 million goal, will shoot a full-length Veronica Mars feature this summer with a premiere around early 2014. Pledge makers would be rewarded with anything from a copy of the script through to a speaking role in the title. To us, the real highlight is the planned release strategy -- like an increasing number of movies, we'd be watching digital copies "within a few days" of the opening, rather than months. While Thomas and crew can't declare the fundraiser over until April 12th, it's advancing quickly enough that the focus is less on whether or not the project will go forward and more on its chances at becoming an internet-backed blockbuster. Update: Just a few hours after kicking off its crowdfunding effort, the Veronica Mars movie project has surpassed its $2 million goal. Right now it's hovering around $2,035,000, but we suspect it'll balloon even further within the 30 days that remain in the campaign.

  • Secret Assassin's Creed plot slipped by Veronica Mars star

Speaking with IGN TV about her role in Assassin's Creed, Veronica Mars star Kristen Bell offered a surprising take on Ubisoft's upcoming title:"It's sort of based on the research that's sort of happening now, about the fact that your genes might be able to hold memory. And you could argue semantics and say it's instinct, but how does a baby bird know to eat a worm, as opposed to a cockroach, if its parents don't show it? And it's about this science company trying to, Matrix-style, go into peoples brains and find out an ancestor who used to be an assassin, and sort of locate who that person is."Huh? We thought Assassin's Creed was about the Third Crusade? Guess there is something to that mysterious 'after-death screen' (see video; jump to 5:35). Too bad Ubisoft was unavailable for comment.

How do you measure a game's success? Sales? Review scores? Combined worldwide playtime? All fine metrics, but to be truly successful, you need cultural impact. And what better indicator of cultural impact is their than a mention on prime time network TV (if you consider the CW a real network...).This is all an effort to add some sort of meaningful context to the below clip from last night's Veronica Mars, which includes a brief cameo by everyone's favorite guitar simulator. It may not compare to selling your company for millions of dollars, but it still must be cool to hear fictional college kids say your game rocks.
