The pioneering Virtua Fighter series hasn't seen a release in North America since 2007. Sega just announced plans to bring the latest version of Virtua Fighter 5 over -- as a downloadable game. Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown is based on the 2010 arcade version, which adds new costume options, dynamic arenas and, most importantly, "a full overhaul of Virtua Fighter 5's mechanics, balance and animations." 19 playable characters will be available, including the sumo wrestler Taka-Arashi, who returns from Virtua Fighter 3. Sega is planning to release Final Showdown next summer. If you're at PAX, you'll be able to play the arcade version at the nearby Gameworks. Rather than set up console demos at the show, Sega has brought in full arcade machines to show off Final Showdown.

Arcades may unfortunately be few and far between in North America these days, but they are still fairly big in Japan and, apparently, keeping up with the times. The latest big advance comes courtesy of Sega, which recently announced that its forthcoming Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown game will be Twitter-enabled -- a first for any arcade machine. That will let players link their Twitter account to their online VF.net profile and send a tweet whenever you hit a winning streak or mark another accomplishment -- like the fact that you're playing Virtua Fighter 5 in an arcade in Japan.

Sega recently announced a surprising feature for the Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown arcade installations which will soon populate Japanese arcades. According to Versus City's translation of the announcement, players will be able to link their VF.net profiles to their Twitter accounts, which will allow the Final Showdown machines to automatically Tweet their accomplishments. Players will also be able to search for their recent adversaries on VF.net, and begin following their linked Twitter account. The game's director, Daiichi Katagiri, gave a few examples of updates which the machine will generate, including "DK's Lau has put together a 10 game win streak at Club Sega Shinjuku #VF5FS" and "DK's Lau has earned the "Dragon Wing" item from a Basic Capsule (Rare) #VF5FS." We think this feature could really turn the American arcade industry around, though we're not crazy about the idea of broadcasting messages such as "I just sprained my ankle and humiliated myself in public again #DDRSuperNova2."

  • New trailer for Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown -- no fooling

After effectively tricking us with its April Fools' trailer, Sega has released some more authentic footage of Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown, the latest update to Sega's 3D arcade fighter. If nothing else, the video (posted after the break) proves that Sega knows how to make a fighting game trailer: It's three minutes of in-game footage -- of fighting -- and nothing else. We can appreciate that! Additionally, on his development blog, director Daiichi Katagiri offered details of a new costume system, which uses nudity for good. Final Showdown provides a skimpy "S-type" costume for characters -- underwear, basically -- to allow players to completely outfit characters from the most basic layer of clothing on up -- or, as Sega will quickly discover, to allow players to just fight in their undies. • April Fools: Virtua Fighter parodies Street Fighter/Tekken

Have you ever pondered what it would be like to blend Sega's super technical Virtua Fighter series with Street Fighter or Tekken? Well, ponder no more, as Sega has provided us with an answer. The end result would look something like the video embedded after the break, in which the company unveils the super fictional fighter, Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown. The simple, precise combos of the series have gone out the window, replaced with massive damage, fireballs and even Ultra Combo finishers. Alas, as fun (blasphemous?) as it looks, it's only an April Fools' joke (for now). Which reminds us: You're going to see a lot of April Fools' jokes in the next 24 to 48 hours. We'll do our best to catalogue them here on Joystiq. [Via @jaredr]

As the AOU 2010 expo gets underway at Tokyo's Makuhari Messe (also home to the annual Tokyo Game Show), Sega is showing its latest coin-op iteration of Virtua Fighter, called Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown. (Or: Virtua Fighter 5 Probably Not Really the Final Showdown Because the Game is Still Super Popular -- but we can understand why Sega went with the more pared-down title.) So far, only a highly stylized teaser trailer for the (for now) arcade-only title has been released, along with a page on the official Japanese Virtua Fighter site that mentions (via machine translation) additional costumes, more character customization items and new moves. Of course, it's been almost three years since the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the Lindbergh-powered quarter-muncher hit the US, so we're not exactly holding out hope for this one popping up on store shelves in the States. But, hey, there's always PSN and XBLA. [Thanks, Harlock!]

  • Virtua Fighter 5, FIFA Street 3 kick Games on Demand in the face

Because both games involve flying feet, get it? Anyhway, Major Nelson has informed the masses that both Virtua Fighter 5 and FIFA Street 3 have landed on Xbox Live's Games on Demand service. As usual, both games are only available in certain regions. Virtua Fighter 5 is confined to Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan, while FIFA Street 3 is available everywhere except Austria, Canada, Japan, Singapore, Switzerland, Taiwan. Also as usual, pricing varies by region, so check your local listings. You may find yourself wondering just how companies decide which regions get their games. We're convinced that Microsoft has set up a giant Velcro map, next to which is kept a bucket of tennis balls. Granted, we have no proof to back up this theory, but we're almost positive it's the truth.

During a recent interview with 1UP, ex-Tecmo employee and leather lover Tomonobu Itagaki (along with comrades Hiroaki Matsui, Katsunori Ehara, and Yoshifuru Okamoto) iterated that he is returning to gaming, and will be backed up by a brand new team on a project for a future game. Unfortunately, we won't see anything on this new game at next week's E3, although Itagaki did confirm he would be in attendance. The new company is tentatively called "Tokyo Vikings" (how ... appropriate) and is largely comprised of ex-Team Ninja staff, including a majority of the folks who worked on Ninja Gaiden 2. Surprisingly, his new team even managed to snag some key character designers from Virtua Fighter 5.Itagaki was overall pretty tight-lipped about the new team and its mystery project, but did confirm that it wouldn't be a fighting game, as Itagaki is sure he's hit the ceiling there with Dead or Alive 4. He wouldn't comment on whether it would be an Xbox 360 exclusive, or heading to other consoles such as the PS3, but his past affiliations with Microsoft might suggest a likely path for his future games.

As of late, Sega hasn't been very kind to PS3 owning fighting fans. First, Sega spurned online support for the PS3 version of Virtua Fighter 5, instead offering full online play for the game's Xbox 360 version. More recently, however, Sega released a patch for the 360 title that improved several aspects of play, both online and offline. Do you think Sega would finally throw us PS3 VF5 owners bone? No and probably not ever, according to Sega's Jay Boor. He told PS3 Fanboy, "at this time SEGA has no plans to release a patch for the PS3 version of Virtua Fighter 5."Sure, a few of you may look at that and still hold onto the possibility, but we're finally closing the door on any hope that the PS3 version will ever get any future improvements, let alone online play. Oh well, there's always the inevitable sequel, right?

X3F reports that SEGA has launched an auto-update for Virtua Fighter 5 on the Xbox 360. The update includes various bug fixes, and minor tweaks to the online gameplay experience. Most notably, however, the update adds the ability to save replays from online matches, and select pants for your character independent of the rest of the outfit.Oh that's right. Now, El Blaze can be sporting Costume B, but wearing the pants from Costume A. It's a brave new world, people. Check out the full list of updates after the break.

Today, SEGA announced and launched a new auto update via Xbox Live for Virtua Fighter 5 that's aimed at bringing a few minor changes to enhance your VF5 experience. Changes including the ability to save online replay videos after a fight, a re-worked costume system, the ability to see your opponent's internet connection, the ability to see your opponent's gamer picture as well as other random fixes. After the break, we've posted a complete list of changes the VF5 update will bring, so be sure to check that out. And as with all game updates, to get it all you have to do is load up VF5 while connected to Xbox Live and she should instantly download. Now be sure to remember your manners and thank SEGA for their continued VF5 support.

Sorry if we come across a little bothered in this post, but the fact of the matter is that we are very bothered. The source of our bothered nature is this week's latest Marketplace DLC offerings. And no, it's not the new 300 Microsoft point Virtua Fighter 5 Item Pack 1 which allows for more character customization. The price is a bit steep and evil in its own right, but we have bigger fish to fry.The source of our bothered nature is EA's new DLC that they just release for Need for Speed: ProStreet. Listen to this. Not only did EA release three car bundles (Tuner, Sport and Muscle) to the Marketplace on ProStreet's launch day for 400 Microsoft points each, but they're also selling a $10 cheat code. That's correct, for 800 Microsoft points you can get the Ultimate Performance Bundle which will unlock every performance upgrade in ProStreet. Keyword there is "unlock", because purchasing the Ultimate Performance Bundle pretty much boils down to purchasing a cheat code. When will they learn?

The game just went gold yesterday and now, thanks to the developer powers that be and the XBLM, you can play it today. Available as a 674Mb download to all Xbox Live regions is a super new Virtua Fighter 5 demo that we hear is smoother than butta and more fun than a barrel of tacos. We're not sure what we mean by that, but darned if we're not excited and surprised to be getting to play Virtua Fighter 5 today. Thanks SEGA, you made our day and as a thank you we'll buy lunch next time. Are tacos fine?

It has been quite the long wait, but now the online enabled version of SEGA's golden child of fighters Virtua Fighter 5 has officially gone gold and is ready for its October 30th debut on the 360. SEGA of America announced the game's gold status today and made sure to note that the game will sport online versus play as well as vibration feedback, both something its older sibling on the PS3 didn't do. Snap! No doubt about it, Virtua Fighter 5 will satisfy the hunger fighter fans have been craving and at the same time further drain our ever decreasing bank account. Speaking of which, we wonder if banks give out loans for video game purchases. We'll have to check on that.

Our friends over at Achieve360Points posted all 32 achievements for upcoming release Virtua Fighter 5 and they're mediocre-fighter'tastic ... you know, if mediocre-fighter'tastic were a word. Among the list are eleven secret achievements and a pretty typical achievement assortment that are based off of tournament completion, advancement and costume unlocks. Nothing too spectacular really, they're all kind of generic. But if we had to pick a favorite Virtua Fighter 5 achievement it would have to be "All Emblems". Why? Well, because it has a stuffed rabbit as its icon and we have a soft spot for stuffed rabbits. Be sure to check out the full list of Virtua Fighter 5 achievements after the jump and prepare for battle, because October 30th will be here soon enough.

With the Tokyo Game Show officially kicking off today, a new batch of "Bringing It Home" content has landed on Xbox Live Marketplace. In addition to loads of new themes and gamer pictures, there are five new trailers for upcoming games. All told, there are new trailers for Virtua Fighter 5, Soul Calibur IV, Ace Combat 6, Kingdom Under Fire: Circle of Doom, and Dark Sector. We're probably most intrigued by the Soul Calibur IV trailer, as it reveals a few more tidbits about the supposed final chapter in the series. Kingdom Under Fire: COD will likely disappoint fans of the series, as it isn't a true sequel, but rather a button mashing spree akin to Dynasty Warriors. Check out more trailers after the break. Now, if you'll excuses us, we have to continue crossing our fingers that we'll see a Ninja Gaiden 2 demo before the weekend is out.

Today, SEGA must have felt a little left out of the E3 hubub and as a result decided to share its video game release schedule through 2008. SEGA isn't giving out concrete dates, but has announced that Xbox 360 games Virtua Fighter 5 and SEGA Rally Revo will be available this Fall, The Golden Compass this December, Condemned 2: Bloodshot is penciled in for February, Iron Man next Spring, Universe at War: Earth Assault Q1 of 2008, and The Club will make its way to retailers Winter 2008. So, later this year SEGA will grace us with some online Virtua Fighter 5, SEGA Rally Revo and The Golden Compass and anything releasing in 2008 we won't comment on, because 2008 is way too far in the future for our A.D.D. minds to care about. Bring on the 2007 games!

Yeah, you read that right. Despite all the cries that it would ruin game balance, and that Virtua Fighter just wouldn't work online, there it is. Sega has officially announced that Virtua Fighter 5 for the Xbox 360 will feature online versus multiplayer. Given that this was one of our personal predictions for E3, we couldn't be happier. Online play in Virtua Fighter 5 will allow players to take on opponents in 1-on-1 matches over Xbox Live. The 360 version is based on the latest arcade revision and features new additions to the Quest and DOJO modes. Of course, Online play stands out as a particularly ostentatious feather in the 360 version's cap, as the PS3 version is an offline-only affair.

  • Virtua Fighter 5 is prettier on the 360

The crew over at IGN received an "eyes on" preview of the Xbox 360 version of Virtua Fighter 5 and came away starry eyed impressed. SEGA was eager to show off the ported PS3 game and rightly so, because they went back into the code and polished everything for the 360 version. IGN says that VF5 on the 360 is noticeably prettier, because subtle new effects were added (like morning fog) and the aliasing issues that were so noticeable in the PS3 version have been fixed. And for you arcade diehards, SEGA also mentioned that HORI will be releasing a plain Jane VF5 arcade stick when the game releases.Even though SEGA hasn't confirmed or denied online play (we're praying it does), it sounds like the 360 version of Virtua Fighter 5 will be the uber edition. Things are looking great for Virtua Fighter fanboys.
