Who said the squeaky wheel doesn't get the grease? Sony Ericsson has pulled a 180 on its decision to halt development for the P990 and W950. Sony Ericsson's official statement reads "In response to recent feedback from users and as a result of additional internal testing, Sony Ericsson has determined to offer a further firmware update for the P990 and W950 Walkman® phone ..." No word on if any love is coming for the M600, but the next -- and likely last -- update should roll out in August via the Sony Ericsson Update Service.[Thanks, Tom]

If you have a misbehaving P990, your last chance at firmware salvation will be in version R6D23 released June 15th. Either Sony Ericsson has decided it really has gotten it right this time, or has decided it just can't be sorted, but either way the aforementioned mobiles development has ceased. There is some clarity available from a developer post at Sony Ericsson's developer forums, and the picture we wrangled is that due to memory limitations, not much more can be done, it's a hardware problem. It's a bit of a shame that the oft delayed, eagerly anticipated upgrade to the venerable P910 seems to have left so many feeling a bit burnt in the end. So if you have a P990 (the others in the list apparently aren't such troubled creatures) and can't get no satisfaction, upgrade it to the newest FW and if that's still a bust, move on to a P1.[Via Just Another Mobile Phone Blog]

  • Can the Sony Ericsson M600 be morphed into W950?

Is your straight-laced M600 getting you down? Fear not, with some sort of magic -- we have no word if this is real magic or simply some tomfoolery disguised as such -- you can add a dash of Walkman flair by converting it to a W950. We have seen similar conversion efforts in the past, and while some functionality is gained, some of course can be lost -- converting a K800 to a K810, for instance, results in the keyboard backlight no longer working. The user who reported performing this alleged trick on his handset didn't share any details about how this was done, so there isn't any way to check the credibility of this feat, so color us not too convinced on this one.

  • Keepin' it real fake, part XLIII: SE W950 slacker edition

If we've said it once, we've said it a thousand times: don't try to pull of this whole fakin' it thing if you aren't going to take it all the way. While the eBay perp in this situation obviously committed hundreds of man-hours into making sure he used every single tacky font color and size on his item listing, we can't say as much for this "Langxin M902" he's peddling. The phone pretends to Sony Ericsson W950i UIQ heights, but ends up looking a bit more like a dollar store edition -- unacceptable, somebody should be working their sweatshop workers at least twice as hard! All the same, 12.6mm of thickness, an included 512MB memory card, Bluetooth, 1.3 megapixel camera and audio and video playback really isn't too shabby for a knockoff, and neither is that 2.4-inch 176 x 220 touchscreen if you don't break the cheap plastic stylus at your first go. Unfortunately, the GSM phone is of the 900 / 1800 MHz persuasion, so Stateside KIRFers will have to look elsewhere.
