The revamp will include new photo-sharing features that will also allow users to comment on images -- bringing a little social flavor to the data syncing service. The personal media syncing is also going to expand to support videos, allowing you to quickly upload clips from your phone and have them appear on your computer. If that weren't enough, the same sources also claim that Apple is building out a syncing service for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/11/icloud-com-slip-up-shows-notes-and-reminders-plus-ios-6/">Notes and Reminders</a>, which will debut alongside iOS 6, as previous leaks have indicated. Obviously none of this is concrete, but it certainly sounds as if Apple is planning to put some serious effort into making iCloud succeed where <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/mobileme">MobileMe</a> failed. Such a dramatic upgrade might also help explain the trickle of tips we've been receiving this morning that iCloud's email service is down.</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/14/apple-may-be-prepping-icloud-upgrade-photo-sharing-features/">Apple may be prepping iCloud upgrade, photo-sharing features</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 14 May 2012 12:58:00 EST. If that wasn't enough, some skulking about in the HTML code of the beta page showed for a time that access to the new features requires signing in to the "<a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/iOS6/">iOS 6</a> beta," a fairly strong indicator that a web refresh will go hand-in-hand with a new mobile platform at <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/25/apples-wwdc-hitting-san-francisco-on-june-11th/">this year's WWDC</a>. It's scheduling a Windows Phone Developer Summit in San Francisco for June 20th and 21st, just a week before Google's meetup. Details are scant in the notice Engadget received, although Microsoft teases us with the prospects of learning "developer opportunities and platform capabilities in Windows Phone." Whether that means <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/12/leaked-ms-roadmap/">Apollo</a> or just more about Windows Phone 7.5 Refresh (<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/08/microsoft-tango-details/">Tango</a>) is still very much a mystery. Either way, it's likely to be good news for Metro-friendly developers crestfallen after <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/24/microsofts-cancels-mix-for-2013/">MIX was shut down</a>.</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/02/windows-phone-developer-summit-announced/">Windows Phone Developer Summit coming June 20th, makes for one busy month</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 02 May 2012 20:59:00 EST. Apple today announced that it will be kicking off this year's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/WWDC/">World Wide Developers Conference</a> on June 11th at San Francisco's Moscone West. The event is set to run through the 15th, focusing on developing for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/16/apple-os-x-mountain-lion-10-8-in-depth-preview/">OS X Mountain Lion</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/ios/">iOS</a>, by way of 100-plus technical sessions and hands-on labs, letting the developer community work directly with Cupertino staff -- and you can bet we'll be there as well. More info on the event -- including ticket purchasing details -- can be found in the press release after the break.</p><p> <strong>Update: </strong>Aaand, it's sold out. After two hours, Apple <a href="http://developer.apple.com/wwdc/">is saying</a> that no more tickets are available. Looks like you're going to have to enjoy some post-show videos instead.</p><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/25/apples-wwdc-hitting-san-francisco-on-june-11th/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Apple's WWDC hitting San Francisco on June 11th</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/25/apples-wwdc-hitting-san-francisco-on-june-11th/">Apple's WWDC hitting San Francisco on June 11th</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 25 Apr 2012 08:38:00 EST. The unveiling of iOS 5 at this year's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/06/wwdc-2011-liveblog-steve-jobs-talks-ios-5-os-x-lion-icloud-an/">WWDC keynote</a> brought a wonderful <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/06/apples-ios-5-all-the-details/">feast of features</a>, but it left us wondering if the iPhone 3GS would be updated with a few cards short of a full deck -- the same way the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/21/iphone-3g-ios-4-and-you-whats-missing-spoiler-multitaski/">3G was treated</a> last year. Reports are starting to flow in from folks who've tested it, so let's get the bad news out of the way first: yes, some features are being withheld from the 3GS. The good news? They're much more minor than we feared. So far, it appears that full <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/06/apple-brings-twitter-integration-to-ios/">Twitter integration</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/06/notifiction-center-for-ios-5-announced/">notifications</a> are included; the newsstand and App Store are also intact, as well as the Safari reading list and grid lines in the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/06/apple-adds-camera-shortcut-to-lock-screen-volume-up-shutter-key/">camera</a>. The only things we see missing so far are the photo editing features in the camera and the tab bar in Safari. So breathe a deep and well-deserved sigh of relief, fans, because your iPhone 3GS isn't obsolete -- at least, not yet. The full <a href="http://www.engadget.com/wwdc-2011/apple-ios-5-hands-on-preview/">walkthrough</a> of iOS 5 on the 3GS is right after the break.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/09/ios-5-imposes-minor-feature-limitations-on-iphone-3gs-3g-owners/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>iOS 5 imposes minor feature limitations on iPhone 3GS, 3G owners still bitter</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/09/ios-5-imposes-minor-feature-limitations-on-iphone-3gs-3g-owners/">iOS 5 imposes minor feature limitations on iPhone 3GS, 3G owners still bitter</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 09 Jun 2011 05:41:00 EST. If you live in the US or Canada then the iTunes 10.3 beta is ready to rumble on your PC or Mac. Automatic downloads and access to your purchase history is limited to iOS 4.3.3 users on the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 (GSM only, sorry Verizon subscribers), iPad and iPad2, and 3rd and 4th generation iPod touch devices. Once you meet those requirements, the iTunes in the Cloud beta promises to keep all of your newly purchased iTunes music in sync between devices while giving you the choice to download previously purchased tracks whenever you want at no additional cost. 10.3 beta also brings the Automatic Downloads feature to your apps and books, now allowing you to purchase tomes from your desktop while keeping them in sync with the iBooks app running on your iOS devices.<br />

<a href="http://engadget.com/tag/ios5">iOS 5</a> won't be ready for the masses until this Fall, but lucky developers -- and eager tech bloggers -- are able to get in on the action right now. We just got done downloading the 730MB BETA, and have decided to turn our iPhone 4 and iPad 2 into guinea pigs for all the newness. Apple says that there are over 200 new features baked into the updated OS, and we've run through the biggies from Notification Center to Twitter to that oh-so-convenient split keyboard for you -- all you need to do is click after the break.<br />

	The waiting, a great man once said, is the hardest part. And while seeing all of today's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/06/wwdc-2011-liveblog-steve-jobs-talks-ios-5-os-x-lion-icloud-an/">WWDC promises</a> come to fruition will certainly take patience, iPhone owners can take some solace in the fact that the updates have already begun. At least a portion of the new functionality is now available by opening up the "Purchased" tab in iOS 4's App Store, revealing a history of apps that have been downloaded with your account, including those not currently on your device. Those not presently installed will feature a cloud icon, making it possible to re-download them onto the handset. It's not quite <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/06/apples-ios-5-all-the-details/">iOS 5</a>, sure, but it's a start.<br />

	This morning we had <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/06/engadget-broadcasting-live-from-wwdc/">a little fun</a> prognosticating about what we'd see at today's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/06/wwdc-2011-liveblog-steve-jobs-talks-ios-5-os-x-lion-icloud-an/">WWDC keynote</a> address. We'll, now we've seen it, so join us for some post-event analysis from just outside the event center. We'll be starting shortly, so click "Play" above when things go live.<br />
	<br />
	<strong>Update: </strong>We're done, and we didn't even break UStream this time. If you missed it, or want to relive the experience, however, we'll have a saved version of the video up shortly.<br />
	<br />
	<strong>Update 2:</strong> And it's up! Check out the video after the break.</div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/06/engadgets-post-wwdc-keynote-broadcast-live/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Engadget's post-WWDC keynote broadcast, live!</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/06/engadgets-post-wwdc-keynote-broadcast-live/">Engadget's post-WWDC keynote broadcast, live!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 06 Jun 2011 16:00:00 EST. Apple has just announced its long-awaited cloud-based music service: iTunes in the Cloud. While not a streaming music service as some had speculated, it will let you download any music you've purchased to all of your devices at no additional charge -- something Steve Jobs notes is a first for the music industry. All new music you purchase can also automatically be downloaded and pushed to up to ten different devices -- and, as with the other apps that make up the broader iCloud service, it's completely free, with a beta version available today (in the US only, unfortunately).<br />
<br />
What's more, Apple has also announced a complementary iTunes Match service that will let you put your existing collection of ripped CDs in the cloud. That's done by scanning your library and matching songs to the versions Apple already has (a DRM-free 256kbps AAC file), rather than uploading everything -- a process Apple notes takes "minutes," not "weeks" -- although songs <em>will</em> be uploaded in cases where there is no match. It will run you $24.99 a year (for up to 25,000 songs, apparently), and promises to give you all of the "same benefits as music purchased from iTunes" when it launches sometime this fall.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/06/apple-announces-itunes-in-the-cloud/">Apple announces iTunes in the Cloud, iTunes Match</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 06 Jun 2011 14:45:00 EST. <div>
	Apple <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/31/apple-to-unveil-icloud-monday-june-6/">tipped its hat</a> early, but now we have the details from the man himself. "iCloud stores your content in the cloud and wirelessly pushes it to all your device. It automatically uploads it, stores it, and pushes it to all your devices." And by "automatically," he means it: in addition to every day content, such as purchased music, iBooks, photos and videos, device settings, and app data that will be automatically backed up over WiFi, Documents in the Cloud will effortlessly sync Pages, Numbers, and Keynote data between all of your iOS devices. There will be no advertising (contrary to previous rumors), and calendar, mail, and contact sync is free (for up to five gigs). Also in store is the new Photo Stream cloud feature, which is essentially a gallery in Photos that exists on all of your iOS devices, Apple TV, your OS X and even your Windows PCs, and syncs through the cloud. Take a picture on your iPhone and it appears on your laptop and your iPad, and it's stored in the cloud for thirty days. And no, your Photo Stream pics do not count towards your 5GB total. iCloud will be released concurrent with iOS 5 this fall.<br />
	<br />
	If that isn't enough, Apple has announced iTunes Match, a $25 per year service that scans your iTunes library library and populates your <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/06/apple-announces-itunes-in-the-cloud/">iTunes in the Cloud</a> account with any of your previously bought and ripped music -- in handy 256Kbps AAC, DRM-free files (as long as the titles already appear in the iTunes store).<br />
	<br />
	Last but not least, MobileMe is no more. If you're a current member, you can still access everything as usual through June 30, 2012 (according to Apple), but there will be no new enrollments. And if your subscription has auto-renewed recently? Well, we've received plenty of tips from readers who have received refunds this morning. So at the very least you have that to look forward too!<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-reveals-icloud-at-wwdc/">Apple reveals iCloud at WWDC</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-reveals-icloud-at-wwdc/#4195800"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/wwdc-11-ios5-icloud-01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-reveals-icloud-at-wwdc/#4195801"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/wwdc-11-ios5-icloud-02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-reveals-icloud-at-wwdc/#4195802"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/wwdc-11-ios5-icloud-03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-reveals-icloud-at-wwdc/#4195803"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/wwdc-11-ios5-icloud-04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-reveals-icloud-at-wwdc/#4195804"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/wwdc-11-ios5-icloud-05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></div>

We've now put together the full list of highlights from the WWDC presentation, which you'll find after the break. iOS 5 will be made available this fall, with compatibility promised for the iPhone 4 and 3GS, iPad 1 and 2, and iPod touch 3rd and 4th generation.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/06/apples-ios-5-all-the-details/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Apple's iOS 5: all the details</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/06/apples-ios-5-all-the-details/">Apple's iOS 5: all the details</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 06 Jun 2011 14:15:00 EST. It's here, the moment BlackBerry owners been waiting for since the original iPhone launched: iMessage. Apple has just announced its new data-based push messaging service at WWDC, which looks to be a full-on competitor to the venerable BBM. This service works on an iOS device of any flavor, and lets you send text messages, photos, videos, and contacts to anyone else with one too. It also supports group chats and integrates with the new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/06/notifiction-center-for-ios-5-announced/">Notification Center</a> in iOS 5. According to Scott Forstall, it "works over WiFi or 3G, in case you were wondering," which is yet another blow for RIM. The final nail in the coffin for those of you who simply 'can't live without BBM:' delivery and read confirmations. Boom.<br />

	Apple's just announced that iOS 5-enabled iPhones (and likely iPads and iPods, too) are getting a camera shortcut on the lock screen and a shutter button in the form of the volume up key -- a feature that got Camera+ temporarily banned from the App Store last year on the grounds that it used unauthorized APIs. Also new to iOS: the ability to tap and hold to lock focus and exposure on a subject. Rounding out the list, Apple also added an optional grid to help frame photos, and a new photo editor with a basic feature set that includes cropping, rotating, red-eye reduction, auto-enhance features, and the ability to create albums on the device.<br />

Love your iPhone, but hate all of the PC-based tethering it entails? Apple has some good news: the company is taking its "post-PC" stance a step further, letting you activate your smartphone straight out of the box without syncing it to a computer. Also big news is the addition of over-the-air updates, which will let you receive changes without plugging the handset in. And some big news for music fans: users will be able to sync their iTunes libraries over WiFi connections with the update.<br />

	Apple's just announced that it's bringing deep Twitter integration to all of its iOS-based devices, and to many of its own apps, including Camera, Photos, Safari and Maps. That integration also, of course, extends to Contacts, where you'll be able to link your contacts to their Twitter handle and keep their information updated accordingly, much like Android. You'll also only have to sign into Twitter once (in Settings), and then simply share those credentials with any app that requests them. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/ios-5-twitter-integration/">iOS 5 Twitter integration</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/ios-5-twitter-integration/#4195021"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/wwdc-11-ios5-twitter-01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/ios-5-twitter-integration/#4195022"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/wwdc-11-ios5-twitter-02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/ios-5-twitter-integration/#4195023"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/wwdc-11-ios5-twitter-03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/ios-5-twitter-integration/#4195024"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/wwdc-11-ios5-twitter-04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/ios-5-twitter-integration/#4195025"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/wwdc-11-ios5-twitter-05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/06/apple-brings-twitter-integration-to-ios/">Apple brings deep Twitter integration to iOS</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 06 Jun 2011 13:58:00 EST. It looks like <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/iOS5/">iOS 5</a> has a new approach to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/notifications,ios">notifications</a> -- and we like what we see so far. Notification Center aggregates your various app alerts and eschews the pop-ups for a decidedly Android-esque list that appears at the top of our your screen when you you get a Facebook message, or a tweet, or when you miss a call. Swiping down brings you to the list, and swiping across any instance takes you to the corresponding app. Feast your eyes on the gallery below for a closer look.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/ios-5-notification-center/">iOS 5 Notification Center</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/ios-5-notification-center/#4194878"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/wwdc-11-notifications-01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/ios-5-notification-center/#4194879"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/wwdc-11-notifications-02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/ios-5-notification-center/#4194880"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/wwdc-11-notifications-03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/ios-5-notification-center/#4194881"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/wwdc-11-notifications-04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/ios-5-notification-center/#4194884"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/wwdc-11-notifications-05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/06/notifiction-center-for-ios-5-announced/">Notification Center for iOS 5 announced</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 06 Jun 2011 13:48:00 EST. <div>
	Apple has been talking about OS X Lion for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/20/os-x-10-7-lion-announced/">some time</a> already, of course, but it's now filled in most if not all of the remaining key details at WWDC. Dubbed a "major release" with over 250 new features, the OS adds things like a slew of new multi-touch gestures and full-screen apps (including iPhoto, iMovie, Safari, etc.), plus the all new Mission Control, which unifies Expose and Spaces, and the iOS-esque Launchpad application launcher. It also includes a new system-wide Resume feature that lets you pick up exactly where you left off, a new auto-save feature that automatically saves different versions of documents, the new AirDrop peer-to-peer file-sharing system, and a brand new version of Mail that finally includes a conversation view.<br />
	<br />
	The big news revealed today, however, is that the OS will now <em>only</em> be available in the Mac App Store as a 4GB download -- which installs in place, no reboots -- and that it will run you just $29.99 for all of your authorized Macs. It will be available sometime in July, but developers can get the latest preview release today. Head on past the break for the official press release.<br />
	<br />
	<strong>Update: </strong>It didn't garner much fanfare, but Apple has also <a href="http://www.apple.com/macosx/server/">revealed</a> that Lion Server will be available as an App Store download in July as well, with it set to run you $49.99 (a veritable bargain by Server standards). <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/mac-os-x-lion-at-wwdc-2011/">Mac OS X Lion at WWDC 2011</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/mac-os-x-lion-at-wwdc-2011/#4194473"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/wwdc-2011-eng-osx-01.jpeg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/mac-os-x-lion-at-wwdc-2011/#4194475"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/wwdc-2011-eng-osx-02.jpeg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/mac-os-x-lion-at-wwdc-2011/#4194476"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/wwdc-2011-eng-osx-03.jpeg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/mac-os-x-lion-at-wwdc-2011/#4194479"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/wwdc-2011-eng-osx-04.jpeg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/mac-os-x-lion-at-wwdc-2011/#4194480"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/wwdc-2011-eng-osx-05.jpeg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/06/os-x-lion-all-the-details/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>OS X Lion launching in July for $29.99, Lion Server to run $49.99</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/06/os-x-lion-all-the-details/">OS X Lion launching in July for $29.99, Lion Server to run $49.99</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 06 Jun 2011 13:38:00 EST. That's right, for the first time we're bringing you a live video feed straight from San Francisco, the heart of Apple's big summer event. What will Apple unveil, when will it ship, and what does it all mean? Tim and Darren will help you figure it all out. Just make sure you click "Play" to start the video.<br />
	<br />
	<strong>Update: </strong>And we're done. Sorry for breaking UStream -- we'll have a saved version of the video up shortly. In the meantime, why not bookmark our <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/06/wwdc-2011-liveblog-steve-jobs-talks-ios-5-os-x-lion-icloud-an/">liveblog</a> of today's event? To be clear, we're NOT liveblogging the keynote itself. Apple won't let anybody!<br />
	<br />
	<strong>Update 2:</strong> We've got the video after the break!</div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/06/engadget-broadcasting-live-from-wwdc/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Engadget, broadcasting live from WWDC!</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/06/engadget-broadcasting-live-from-wwdc/">Engadget, broadcasting live from WWDC!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 06 Jun 2011 10:29:00 EST. Yes, of course we'll be bringing you the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/06/wwdc-2011-liveblog-steve-jobs-talks-ios-5-os-x-lion-icloud-an/">full liveblog action</a> from WWDC, and as ever you'll be able to read along as the biggest Apple news of the summer is unveiled. But this year we're bringing you more: two <em>live broadcasts</em> to give you some extra analysis. At around 10:30am ET (that's 7:30am on the best coast), before Apple kicks off the show, Tim and Darren will go over the expected big announcements for the day, talking iCloud, iOS 5, and Mac OS X Lion. Then, once the dust settles, join us again for a <em>second</em> live broadcast to dive deep into the day's announcements and any other surprises Mr. Jobs has in store for us. Hopefully we'll all survive.<br />

<div>
	In the lead-up to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Wwdc2011/">this year's WWDC</a>, we so far know three things for sure: Apple will unveil <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/OSXLion/">OS X Lion</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/31/apple-to-unveil-icloud-monday-june-6/">iCloud</a>, and... automatic, over-the-air app updates for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/iOS5/">iOS 5</a>, apparently. While searching for updates in iTunes, a <em>MacRumors </em>reader stumbled upon this page, which alludes to an "Automatic Download" feature that allows for wireless syncing. Also, the fact that Apple went out of its way to say "...if your device has Automatic Download enabled for apps" makes us wonder what else we'll soon be able to update over the air. The company has since pulled the tattletale page in iTunes, but <em>MacRumors</em> grabbed a screenshot while it was still live. Looks like the cat's out of the bag, but we'll let you know when Jobs &amp; Co. make it official <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/03/steve-jobs-talks-icloud-ios-5-os-x-lion-and-more-at-wwdc-live/">on Monday</a>.</div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/04/itunes-leak-suggests-automatic-download-over-the-air-updates-a/">iTunes leak suggests 'Automatic Download' over-the-air updates are coming in iOS 5</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sat, 04 Jun 2011 13:05:00 EST. Do you love <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/06/streaming-music-breakdown-how-will-google-music-and-icloud-impa/">music</a>? Do you love it in the cloud? Are you still trying to figure out if "the cloud" is "your bag?" Regardless of your mixed emotions regarding the impending <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/iCloud/">iCloud</a> service, that's just a third (based on rough calculations) of what Steve Jobs will talk about on Monday, when <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/WWDC2011/">WWDC 2011</a> kicks off in San Francisco. iOS 5 and OS X Lion will also be major topics of conversation, and while we've no evidence that new hardware will be kicking around backstage, we've got history at our backs giving us a sliver of hope. Naturally, we'll be there kicking out the facts as they happen, and you're encouraged to join us at <strong><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/06/wwdc-2011-liveblog-steve-jobs-talks-ios-5-os-x-lion-icloud-an/">this very link</a></strong>.<br />

	Apple itself has already <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/31/apple-to-unveil-icloud-monday-june-6/">confirmed</a> the name, and now<em> AppleInsider</em> has snapped some early pictures at the Moscone Center that reveal the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/icloud">iCloud</a> logo / icon. Had some doubts that Apple was heading skyward? Those lingering concerns can now be put to rest. Apple has confirmed that it will be announcing <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/icloud">iCloud</a> on June 6th, what it's calling an "upcoming cloud services offering." That will be part of the keynote for this year's Worldwide Developers Conference, known to the cool kids as <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/wwdc">WWDC</a>. This is, of course, where everyone has come to expect new iPhones to come to light, but this year we're thinking the focus will be more on software, and indeed Apple's event notice indicates that the big highlights will be <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/28/mac-os-x-lion-hands-on-preview/">Mac OS X Lion</a> and the next version of its mobile operating system, iOS 5. This is a decidedly non-Apple way to announce something big like iCloud, making us wonder what other surprises Steve Jobs will have for us at the event -- yes, he'll be kicking things off. As ever you can find out as it happens here, live.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/31/apple-to-unveil-icloud-monday-june-6/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Apple to unveil iCloud, iOS 5 on Monday, June 6</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/31/apple-to-unveil-icloud-monday-june-6/">Apple to unveil iCloud, iOS 5 on Monday, June 6</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 31 May 2011 08:40:00 EST. There's been so much chatter about <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/icloud">Apple iCloud</a> that you'd think the streaming music service had already been announced and the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/18/apple-gets-cozy-with-emi-universal-and-sony-over-cloud-music-l/">deals inked</a>. But it's still just a rumor until an Apple executive takes the stage and unleashes the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/cloud%20player">Amazon Cloud Player</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/google%20music">Google Music</a> competitor in a spate of superlatives. That hasn't stopped <em>Businessweek</em> from stepping up with a good summary of all that is "known" thus far, while giving us some insight into the particulars of how the service will work and the motivations to make it happen. One revelation, sourced from three people in the know, claims that Apple will scan customers' iTunes libraries (<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/01/rip-lala-we-hardly-knew-ye/">hello, LaLa</a>) and quickly mirror the contents on Apple's own servers -- no massive <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/11/google-music-beta-walkthrough-what-it-is-and-how-it-works-vide/">DSL-choking upload</a> required. And Apple will do you the solid of "replacing" any low bitrate tracks with the "high-quality" versions it stores in its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/21/reuters-apple-set-to-launch-cloud-based-music-service-ahead-of/">fully licensed</a> music locker for streaming to your connected devices.<br />
<br />
Of course, this value-add won't come free and will certainly require a subscription fee. The cost to the consumer, though, is still very much unclear as is the service's integration with Apple's $99 per year MobileMe sham. And you know those <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/13/wsj-corroborates-the-mini-iphone-says-apple-may-make-mobileme-f/">rumors</a> about <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/04/apple-working-on-unlimited-downloads-of-purchased-itunes-music/">MobileMe being offered as a free service</a>? We wouldn't be surprised if it stays at $99 with iCloud being announced as a "free" feature update; aka, an $8.25 per month music subscription that also provides web access to your synced bookmarks, contacts, email, and calendar. Regardless, it's this subscription model that has the major labels so enthusiastic as it will finally allow them to extort fees for all that pirated audio you may have stumbled upon since Napster was loosed on an unprepared music industry a decade ago. All signs point to WWDC for this to get official but we're sure to hear more -- much more -- before the event kicks off on June 6th.<br />

<a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/sprint">Sprint</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/motorola">Motorola</a> have a little special something up their sleeves, and are rolling them up to show off their latest "collaborations" at a press luncheon on June 9th. Since big bosses CEO <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/dan%20hesse">Dan Hesse</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/sanjay+jha/">Sanjay Jha</a> will be in attendance, and the event will be held during Apple's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/28/apples-wwdc-2011-kicks-off-on-june-6th/">WWDC</a>, we have a feeling this is going to be something big. Whatever this project is, it's been kept under the radar very well -- until now. We're hearing buzz about a Tegra 2-powered device planned for a launch next month; different reports have come out over the last few days claiming Sprint will finally take a turn sporting a <a href="http://mobile.engadget.com/tag/Tegra2/">Tegra 2</a> Android -- the yin to the EVO 3D's yang, we suppose -- sometime next month.<br />
<br />
The device may be called the Motorola Photon 4G, a name that first appeared in a WiFi certification form (seen after the break) a month ago. According to the rumors, Sprint was ready to launch its own version of the Atrix 4G back in March, but stalled the phone's release in order to make a few design changes. Some of these changes supposedly include a 4.3-inch display, Gingerbread pre-installed, and a look that closely resembles the <a href="http://mobile.engadget.com/tag/EVO4G/">EVO 4G</a> (it would even come with a kickstand). The Photon 4G is a probability for the event, but note that the invite mentions "collaborations," implying there will be more than one product to showcase. This could mean a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/28/sprint-starts-selling-motorola-xoom-wifi-not-wimax-may-8th-for/">Xoom with WiMAX</a> is just about ready for primetime -- or perhaps it's something else magical and unexpected. No matter what's hiding in Hesse's pocket on June 9th, we'll be there to tell you all about it.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/25/sprint-teams-up-with-motorola-for-june-9-event-finally-launchin/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sprint teams up with Motorola for June 9 event, finally launching a Tegra 2 device?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/25/sprint-teams-up-with-motorola-for-june-9-event-finally-launchin/">Sprint teams up with Motorola for June 9 event, finally launching a Tegra 2 device?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 25 May 2011 15:31:00 EST. <div style="text-align: left; ">By now you've seen the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/28/apples-wwdc-2011-kicks-off-on-june-6th/">announcement</a> for WWDC 2011 (coming June 6th), but what you may not have heard yet is that this one is going to be a little different than some of the dev cons from years past. Namely, unlike the events in 2008 through 2010, you <em>won't</em> see the announcement of a new iPhone (or iPad... or anything else hardware related). We're hearing the same kind of chatter from sources that solid writers like Jim Dalrymple of <em>The Loop</em> and <em>All Thing D</em>'s John Paczkowski have been reporting today -- that this WWDC is going to be all about the future of iOS and OS X.</div>
<br />
Of course if that pans out, all eyes are going to be on the company's Fall event, which seems like an increasingly likely place to launch a new phone -- especially considering the fact that the iPod's place in Apple's lineup has become diminished thanks to the success of its mobile devices. The timing also sets Apple up nicely for a brisk season of holiday phone purchases. As for the iPad, <em>Daring Fireball</em>'s John Gruber speculated that we might see some kind of new model at this year's Fall event, and while that seems highly unlikely to us given the recent launch of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/iPad2/">iPad 2</a>, a new tablet would make a perfect companion to that new phone. What September holds is pure speculation right now, but for the time being, it looks like you can just get comfortable with your iPhone 4.<br type="_moz" /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/28/no-iphone-5-at-wwdc-this-year-thats-how-it-looks-from-here/">No iPhone 5 at WWDC this year? It's five days of developer love in sunny San Francisco, and this year it starts on June 6th. As ever, Moscone West will be hosting Apple's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/wwdc">Worldwide Developers Conference</a>, and this year we'll be seeing "the future of iOS and Mac OS" along with "more than 100 technical sessions presented by Apple engineers." Last time Steve Jobs <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/07/iphone-4-announced/">unveiled the iPhone 4</a> to a very willing world at large. Could its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/iphone5">successor</a> make an appearance this year? We'll be there live to tell you if and when it happens.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/28/apples-wwdc-2011-kicks-off-on-june-6th/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Apple's WWDC 2011 kicks off on June 6th</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/28/apples-wwdc-2011-kicks-off-on-june-6th/">Apple's WWDC 2011 kicks off on June 6th</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 28 Mar 2011 08:45:00 EST. Now that the dust is beginning to settle on Steve Jobs' <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/07/steve-jobs-live-from-wwdc-2010/">WWDC10 keynote</a>, we thought we'd ask the most pertinent question of all: who's buying this new hero <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/07/iphone-4-announced/">mobile device</a> from Apple? We know the company's loyal fan base will not disappoint, but what about you, undecided voter? Did that 960 x 640 IPS screen make you look upon Cupertino's wares with a new level of appreciation? And let us not neglect the iPhone's detractors here -- have they been placated by the inclusion of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/07/iphone-4-get-5-megapixel-sensor-720p-video/">HD video recording</a>, video chat and a meaty new A4 processor? Tick the appropriate box below, then visit us in the comments and let us know what you thought. <br />

Not enough for you? We'll have a big comparison of all the "majors" for you shortly.<br />
<br />
Now, there's a lot left to learn about Apple's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/07/facetime-video-calling-added-to-iphone-4/">FaceTime</a> video chat service. For instance, they called it "open," but they also only mentioned a zero-configuration iPhone 4 to iPhone 4 calling setup. Meanwhile <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/04/qik-details-its-premium-service-tier-free-until-july-15/">Qik</a> can make calls between EVO 4Gs, but also stream video live to the web (while the iPhone needs to record and then upload to get "social" using its official apps). No mention was made of the FaceTime call resolution, but given the fact that the front camera is merely VGA, it's probably streaming at the same 640 x 480 that Qik is constrained to in the free service. However, a premium version of Qik for $5 a month lets you go beyond that resolution, using the EVO's higher resolution cameras. Perhaps the largest distinction is the fact that the EVO can stream video calls over 3G or 4G, while the iPhone 4 is constrained to WiFi for the time being. Naturally, we expect other video calling apps (Skype, please?) to crop up on both platforms and give these initial offerings a run for their money. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4-vs-evo-4g-fight/">iPhone 4 vs. EVO 4G... fight!</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4-vs-evo-4g-fight/#3053503"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/iphone-4-3g-evo-fight-2010-06-0712-08-17-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4-vs-evo-4g-fight/#3053504"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/iphone-4-3g-evo-fight-2010-06-0712-08-23-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4-vs-evo-4g-fight/#3053505"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/iphone-4-3g-evo-fight-2010-06-0712-08-38-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4-vs-evo-4g-fight/#3053506"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/iphone-4-3g-evo-fight-2010-06-0712-08-51-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4-vs-evo-4g-fight/#3053507"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/iphone-4-3g-evo-fight-2010-06-0712-08-52-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/07/iphone-4-vs-evo-4g-fight/">iPhone 4 vs. EVO 4G... fight!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 07 Jun 2010 16:07:00 EST. We've just gotten some face time (ha ha!) with the new iPhone 4, and let's just say this: it's incredibly sexy. We'll hand it to Apple, the phone is so thin it's kind of mind-boggling. The 3GS by comparison looks bloated. Feast your eyes on the pics below, and check out the FaceTime video demo after the break! Oh, and special thanks to hand models Kara Swisher and Walt Mossberg.<br />
<br />
Some takeaways about the device:
<ul>
    <li>As we said, it's shockingly thin.</li>
    <li>The screen is truly outrageous -- you basically cannot see pixels on it. We're not being hyperbolic when we say it's easily the best looking mobile phone screen we've ever laid eyes on.</li>
    <li>The build quality is really solid. The home button feels much snappier, and on the whole it just feels like a tightly-packed device, but it's not heavy.</li>
    <li>The side buttons are really nice and clicky.</li>
    <li>iOS 4 is very familiar -- there's not a lot added to fit and finish.</li>
    <li>The general speed of the whole OS is way snappier. The camera app in particular is noticeably faster -- shots get snapped in an instant.</li>
</ul>
<strong>Update:</strong> More pics! We've also thrown in a video demo of the iPhone 4 running its FaceTime video chat app. Check it out at the usual location.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4-first-hands-on/">iPhone 4 first hands-on</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4-first-hands-on/#3052912"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/iphone4hands31_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4-first-hands-on/#3052913"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/iphone4hands30_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4-first-hands-on/#3052914"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/iphone4hands29_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4-first-hands-on/#3052915"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/iphone4hands28_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4-first-hands-on/#3052916"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/iphone4hands27_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4-hands-on-black/">iPhone 4 hands-on (black)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4-hands-on-black/#3053027"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/iphone-4-first-hands-2010-06-0712-07-14-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4-hands-on-black/#3053029"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/iphone-4-first-hands-2010-06-0712-07-19-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4-hands-on-black/#3053032"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/iphone-4-first-hands-2010-06-0712-07-25-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4-hands-on-black/#3053037"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/iphone-4-first-hands-2010-06-0712-07-30-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4-hands-on-black/#3053039"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/iphone-4-first-hands-2010-06-0712-07-36-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/07/iphone-4-first-hands-on/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>iPhone 4 first hands-on! Apple's claiming that the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/iPhone4/">iPhone 4</a> represents the platform's biggest advance since the original model's intro back in 2007 -- but does the argument hold water? Apple has unveiled its new iPhone 4 after a couple wild, unprecedented months of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/iphone,leak">leaks</a>. Sure, it looks exactly like we expected it to (Steve compares it to an old Leica camera), with a glass front and back, but it's what's on the inside that counts, kids. The stainless steel band that goes around the phone is an antenna system, while also providing the main structure of the phone, though it's plugged into the same old GSM / UMTS radio you all know and love -- there's a reason they didn't call it the iPhone 4G. There's also of course that front facing camera we were all anticipating, a rear camera with LED flash, and a new high resolution display that doubles the pixels in each direction (960 x 640) for a 4X overall pixel count increase -- Apple calls it a "Retina Display." It's rated at 326ppi, which Apple claims is beyond the human eye's limit of distinction. Check out an example of the new screen up against the iPhone 3G after the break. Similar to the iPad, it's an IPS display, offering 800:1 contrast. Naturally, it's still the same old 3.5-inch size. Under the hood is the A4 processor that runs the iPad. Despite the new engine (and the 25% thinner chassis), Apple managed to make the battery slightly larger, and the new handset is rated at 7 hours of 3G talk, 6 hours of 3G browsing, 10 hours of WiFi browsing, 10 hours of video, and 40 hours of music. Oh, and that WiFi? It's 802.11n now. The camera has been bumped to 5 megapixels, with 5X digital zoom and a "backside illuminated sensor," which now can also record HD video at 720p / 30fps.<br />
<br />
On the software front, applications will automatically get high resolution text and buttons as part of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/07/iphone-os-4-renamed-ios-gets-1500-new-features/">iOS 4</a> (the OS previously known as iPhone OS 4), and with "a little bit of work" developers can make their entire app compatible with the new resolution display. Developers will also get access to a new gyroscope, giving devs "six axis" motion control between the gyroscope, accelerometer, and compass, with a new "Core Motion" API to deal with it all. Users won't be left out in the cold, however: they can mess around with that new HD video using a brand new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/07/iphone-4-get-5-megapixel-sensor-720p-video/">iMovie app</a>, if they shell out $4.99 for it. If anyone's feeling particularly frisky, iOS 4 even lets you switch your default search provider <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/07/bing-comes-to-iphone/">to Bing</a>. Last but certainly not least, that new front camera is enabled for video chat using the new "<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/07/facetime-video-calling-added-to-iphone-4/">FaceTime</a>" feature. It's a WiFi-only (for now) video calling feature that works from iPhone 4 to iPhone 4 with "no setup" involved, and can flip over to the rear camera if your grandparents get tired of your face.<br />
<br />
The phone will be available in white or black, retailing at $199 for the 16GB model and $299 for 32GB. They go on sale June 24th, and AT&amp;T will be giving some extra grace upgrade timing -- up to six months early. The 3GS will be dropped to $99 and the 3G will disappear completely. Pre-orders start in a week, with 5 countries at launch (US, France, Germany, UK, Japan), with 18 more following in July. Apple will also be selling a first party case for $29, and a dock for the same price. PR is after the break, promo videos can be found <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/07/apples-iphone-4-promo-videos-and-sam-mendes-video-calling-ad/">here</a>, and we got <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/07/iphone-4-first-hands-on/"><strong>hands-on right here</strong></a>. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4-announced-1/">iPhone 4 announced</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4-announced-1/#3051630"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/iphone41111111107_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4-announced-1/#3051631"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/iphone41111111108_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4-announced-1/#3051632"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/iphone41111111109_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4-announced-1/#3051633"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/iphone41111111110_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4-announced-1/#3051634"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/iphone41111111111_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4-press-shots/">iPhone 4 press shots</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4-press-shots/#3052946"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/iphonesam401_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4-press-shots/#3052947"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/iphonesam402_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4-press-shots/#3052948"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/iphonesam403_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4-press-shots/#3052949"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/iphonesam404_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4-press-shots/#3052950"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/iphonesam405_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4-features/">iPhone 4 features</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4-features/#3053164"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/camera-focus-20100607_thumbnail.jpeg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4-features/#3053169"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/camera-hero-20100607_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4-features/#3053168"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/camera-lighting-flash-20100607_thumbnail.jpeg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4-features/#3053166"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/camera-lighting-lowlight1-20100607_thumbnail.jpeg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4-features/#3053165"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/camera-lighting-lowlight2-20100607_thumbnail.jpeg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />

We've already seen the iPhone 3GS drop to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/24/walmart-cuts-iphone-3gs-to-97-potentially-clearing-out-invento/">under a $100 at Walmart</a>, and Apple has now expectedly made that the official price point following the announcement of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/07/iphone-4-announced/">iPhone 4</a>. What's more, the 3GS will now only be available in an 8GB version (it's still not clear if both colors will be available or not), and that naturally also means that the iPhone 3G is now officially discontinued. Of course, there's also still quite a few of the current iPhone 3GS models floating around out there, and AT&amp;T will be doing its best to clear those out -- you can now grab a 16GB 3GS for $149, and a 32GB 3GS for $199 on a two-year plan "while supplies last."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/07/iphone-3gs-drops-to-99-8gb-only-iphone-3g-discontinued/">iPhone 3GS drops to $99, 8GB only -- iPhone 3G discontinued</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 07 Jun 2010 13:29:00 EST. That front-facing camera on the new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/07/iphone-4-announced/">iPhone 4</a> and a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/09/ichat-video-with-front-facing-camera-evidence-mounts-in-iphone-o/">flood of leaks</a> were a dead giveaway -- the new FaceTime app brings video calling to the iPhone. Unfortunately, it's WiFi-only at the moment, as Steve says Apple needs to work with carriers to support it on 3G. The FaceTime app is pretty cool -- you can flip the image between the front and rear cameras and between portrait and landscape orientation, and the video call system is built on open standards like SIP, H.264, and AAC so it'll work with other video calling apps as well.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/facetime-video-calling-added-to-iphone-4/">FaceTime video calling added to iPhone 4</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/facetime-video-calling-added-to-iphone-4/#3052475"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/2010-06-07-facetime-iphone4-14_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/facetime-video-calling-added-to-iphone-4/#3052473"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/2010-06-07-facetime-iphone4-12_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/facetime-video-calling-added-to-iphone-4/#3052467"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/2010-06-07-facetime-iphone4-7_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/facetime-video-calling-added-to-iphone-4/#3052466"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/2010-06-07-facetime-iphone4-6_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/facetime-video-calling-added-to-iphone-4/#3052465"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/2010-06-07-facetime-iphone4-5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />

We knew it had to happen eventually -- iPhone OS has been renamed to iOS with the bump to version 4. Some 1500 new features are coming along with the name change, including biggies like multitasking, a unified inbox, app folders, and data detectors. Although Apple is encouraging devs to tweak their apps for the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/07/iphone-4-announced/">iPhone 4's new Retina Display</a>, iOS4 will also automatically redraw text and controls for existing apps to make them play nice with the new higher pixel density. Bing search integration has also been added to iOS 4 in addition to Google and Yahoo -- Google is still the default, though. The golden master is available to devs today, and Steve says the 100 millionth iOS device -- that's iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad -- will be sold sometime this month. That's a lot of devices! We found out about most of the features of iOS 4 at the SDK event, so <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/08/iphone-os-4-0-unveiled-shipping-this-summer/">check here</a> for the full rundown.<br />
<br />
Apple says iOS 4 will arrive for the iPhone 3G, 3GS, and the iPod touch on June 21 -- and it'll be free to iPod touch owners for the first time, which is nice. Not all features will be supported across all devices: the first-gen touch is left out entirely, and the 3G won't do multitasking, as we heard at the SDK event. We'll see if there are any other limitations and let you know.<br />

Amusingly, an iOS trademark is <a href="http://tmportal.uspto.gov/external/portal/tow?SRCH=Y&amp;isSubmitted=true&amp;details=&amp;SELECT=US+Serial+No&amp;TEXT=74494522#">currently owned by Cisco</a> -- just like the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/10/cisco-sues-apple-for-trademark-infringement-ruh-roh/">original iPhone trademark</a> -- so we'll see if Apple's lawyers actually called ahead this time around or if they'll have to fake-tussle and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/02/21/apple-and-cisco-settle/">make nice again</a>.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-os-4-renamed-ios-4-gets-1500-new-features/">iPhone OS 4 renamed iOS 4, gets 1500 new features</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-os-4-renamed-ios-4-gets-1500-new-features/#3052169"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/2010-06-07-ios4-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-os-4-renamed-ios-4-gets-1500-new-features/#3052174"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/2010-06-07-ios4-7_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-os-4-renamed-ios-4-gets-1500-new-features/#3052173"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/2010-06-07-ios4-6_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-os-4-renamed-ios-4-gets-1500-new-features/#3052168"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/2010-06-07-ios4-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-os-4-renamed-ios-4-gets-1500-new-features/#3052176"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/2010-06-07-ios4-9_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />

<div style="text-align: left;">You knew it was bound to happen sooner or later -- Farmville is heading for the iPhone. But that's not all, Activision was also on hand at WWDC to announce an iPhone version of Guitar Hero, which packs classic rock from the likes of Queen and The Rolling Stones, and is available in the App Store today for $2.99. Check out a shot of it after the break, and look for Farmville to be available by the end of June -- or don't, it's up to you.<br />
<strong><br />
Update:</strong> Guitar Hero press release, with the complete tracklist and add-on packs, is now after the break.<br />

After two months of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/netflix,ipad">burning up the iPad</a>, Netflix is ready to devour its latest platform: the iPhone. Just like the iPad app -- where it reigns as the number one downloaded entertainment app, Netflix will have you know -- it's free, and you can pick up your playback from the last spot, as with all Netflix players. Unlike the iPad, the UI actually looks fairly optimized for the platform, including an app-optimized search of your instant queue. It also features "seamless" switching between networks, with 3G streaming apparently a go. It launches this summer. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/netflix-app-headed-for-the-iphone/">Netflix app headed for the iPhone</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/netflix-app-headed-for-the-iphone/#3051312"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/2010-06-07-netflix-5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/netflix-app-headed-for-the-iphone/#3051308"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/2010-06-07-netflix-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/netflix-app-headed-for-the-iphone/#3051309"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/2010-06-07-netflix-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/netflix-app-headed-for-the-iphone/#3051310"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/2010-06-07-netflix-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/netflix-app-headed-for-the-iphone/#3051311"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/2010-06-07-netflix-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />
