Starting next month, US Cellular -- in partnership with Alltel Wireless -- will begin rolling out a new contract-free package dubbed "U Prepaid," which, naturally, is set to be backed by both of the aforementioned carrier's networks. The fresh U Prepaid deal will be making its way into "nearly" 500 Walmart stores across 18 US states, though there's no mention of which ones specifically. That being said, US Cellular and Alltel did announce the four devices coming at launch, including Samsung's Repp and Chrone along with the LG Attune / Exchange and Saber. In any case, now you know where to go if those recently announced plans from AT&T and Verizon aren't keeping a smile on your face.

Continue reading US Cellular, Alltel Wireless team up to launch 'U Prepaid' service in Walmart stores

US Cellular, Alltel Wireless team up to launch 'U Prepaid' service in Walmart stores originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 30 Apr 2012 20:32:00 EST. Intrigued? That's exactly what Walmart has begun offering on its website today with its new Pay With Cash service. It's no different from initiating a normal web order, save for being another -- and potentially convoluted -- option to hand over your funds and checkout. After selecting PWC, you'll receive an order confirmation, which then allots you 48 hours to print it out and present it at your local Wally World. From there, you can choose to pick up the item in store or have it shipped to your house -- in effect, stripping away some of the key conveniences of shopping online in the first place. Of course, one could likely just give their local store a call to place items on hold for a similar result, but hey, more options are always nice, right? At the very least, many without the likes of credit cards and Google Wallets might find some appreciation for this method of retail purchasing. Hit up the links below for all the details.

Walmart's website lets you Pay With Cash, strips away the 'convenience' of shopping online originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 26 Apr 2012 17:43:00 EST. Mexico will be the first to get the service -- some time in June -- before it continues in a southerly direction toward other Latin American states. The rest of the expansion will cover Europe (including the UK and Ireland) and Asia, but won't happen until later on in the year. While Netflix has already beaten a path away from US shores, Walmart clearly hopes its strong retail presence (5000 stores in 26 countries) will help it earn more than just a tourist visa.

Walmart to unleash its Vudu magic on South America, Europe, Asia originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 23 Apr 2012 01:13:00 EST. If the eSport Clip's relatively paltry internal memory doesn't get you excited, you can always add more thanks to the empty microSD slot. That shooter can do video as well as stills, and there is an included suite of effects. Those features alone would make for a more expensive device, if the brand on here was something more recognizable than Ematic. Amazingly, we're not quite done listing off the specs just yet. The supremely cheap player also has an FM radio on board and an eBook reader, though, we're not sure who would want to consume any text on a sub two-inch screen. Starting April 16th, in more than 3,500 stores, you'll be able to bring your DVD or Blu-ray discs in and have 'em added to your Vudu movie collection. The privilege of watching movies you already bought on a disc online via Vudu will cost you $2, but if you own the DVD, it'll cost you $5 to upgrade your digital copy to HD. In addition, you can now buy UltraViolet movies via Vudu and watch them via other UV supported sources -- we assume this is a two-way street, but it isn't spelled out that way in the press release (after the break). This is easily the biggest news for the, now beta badged, UltraViolet service but most of our complaints persist until there's single-sign on and the standard downloadable CFF (common file format) is a reality.
Continue reading Walmart in-store disc to digital UltraViolet conversion gets official

Walmart in-store disc to digital UltraViolet conversion gets official originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 13 Mar 2012 14:06:00 EST. No doubt UltraViolet can use all the help it can get, but this is far from what we were hoping for when we learned Walmart would be in the mix -- we were hoping for the ability to buy and watch UltraViolet movies via Walmart's Vudu. Beyond our personal wishes, this no where near the big revelation that most consumers would actually find interesting: the release of the Common File Format which promises universal offline playback of our movie collection.
WSJ: Walmart to offer in-store disc to digital UltraViolet service originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 04 Mar 2012 14:46:00 EST. The software giant may have gotten a bit of a head start on some of the others, but it's already got some stiff competition in the form of the carrier-led Isis and a slew of new initiatives unveiled at MWC. According The Wall Street Journal, the field may soon be getting even more stiff competition. Walmart and Target have reportedly joined two dozen or so fellow retailers to develop a mobile payment system to call their own. While most of the participants have yet to be named, the list includes a pretty broad spectrum of companies, including fast food joints, big box retailers and drug stores. Google, for one, welcomes such competition, telling the paper, "We think it's great that there are other companies innovating in the payments space. This will create more choice for consumers, and in the end we believe choice is a good thing." No word on when exactly the initiative is set to launch.
WSJ: Target, Walmart, other retailers teaming up to take on Google Wallet originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 02 Mar 2012 17:09:00 EST. Sure, $250 is super cheap for a rather well specced slate, but when the Amazon's entry is a full $50 cheaper it spells trouble. Now it looks like B&N is getting ready to tangle a little more directly with the online retail giant by cutting the Nook Tablet's storage in half to 8GB and slashing the price. Details are pretty slim at the moment, but it does appear that Walmart will be selling the device starting February 22nd, this Wednesday. Sadly, we'll have to wait till then to find out just how much cheaper it'll be and, whether or not the Color will be receiving a corresponding price drop.
Nook Tablet coming to Walmart with less storage and a lower price tag? originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 20 Feb 2012 09:47:00 EST. Well, the two companies are making yet another announcement, teaming up on an improved Family Mobile Plan with unlimited 3G talk, text and web. For those who like cheap dates with no long-term commitments, the news gets even better at $45 per month for the first line ($35 for each additional line) with no contract necessary. There is a bit of a catch as your data speed gets throttled after you exceed your cap -- 5GB if you sign up before March 16 and 250MB if you sign up after that. But, hey, that's still better than being charged overage fees. You also have to pay a one-time $25 Starter Kit fee for each line.
T-Mobile, Walmart do another kumbaya with contract-free unlimited family plan for 3G users originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 18 Jan 2012 10:39:00 EST.

We have some somber news to bring you today: Charles Walton, the man who pioneered the rise of RFID technology, has died at the age of 89. The Cornell-educated entrepreneur garnered more than 50 patents over the course of his career, but it only took one to cement his legacy -- a 1973 patent for a "Portable radio frequency emitting identifier." It may not have been the first RFID-related invention, but Walton's breakthrough would prove to be foundational, spawning many similar patents, including ten from the creator himself. It all began at the Army Signal Corps, where Walton worked after studying electrical engineering at Cornell and earning a Master's degrees in electrical engineering and economics of engineering from the Stevens Institute of Technology. In 1960, he accepted a position at IBM, where he conducted research on disc drives before founding his own company, Proximity Devices, in 1970.

It was at Proximity where many of Walton's patents came to life, including his initial design, which he developed alongside the Schlage lock company and eventually licensed to other firms, as well. He would go on to earn millions from his technology, though as Venture Beat points out, he may have been a bit too far ahead of the curve. Many of Walton's patents expired by the time RFID devices caught on with big spenders like the Department of Defense and Wal-Mart, thereby excluding him from any subsequent windfall. But that didn't seem to bother him too much, as evidenced in a 2004 interview with Venture Beat: "I feel good about it and gratified I could make a contribution."

Charles Walton, father of RFID technology, dies at 89 originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 29 Nov 2011 16:49:00 EST. No, you aren't "losing" that thing up top -- Walmart will indeed be bringing those limited edition blue Wiis to the US of A starting this Thursday, and better still, it'll be hawking 'em for just $99.96 apiece. If you'll recall, the powder blue variants of Nintendo's newest home console were previously reserved for other sections of the globe, but a new spot that just aired on CBS' broadcast of the Titans vs. Falcons has confirmed that it'll be on sale within a matter of days for those lucky enough to snag one. They'll be offered up starting at 10:00PM on November 24th (that's Thanksgiving day, you know) and should be completely sold out by 10:00:01PM on the same day. That tally will net you a console, a matching Wii Remote Plus and a Nunchuk. Good luck -- pack a helmet.
So, PlayBooks haven't exactly been flying off the shelves... anywhere. Not even in RIM's native Canada. But that might actually change over the nex few days as BestBuy, Walmart, Staples and Future Shop have chopped $300 off the price of the QNX-based slate. The sale lasts from November 16th to the 22nd in Quebec, and the 18th to the 24th in the rest of Canada. Now, they're probably not going to eclipse the iPad in sales anytime soon, but a $200 16GB PlayBook is a much more compelling proposition than a $500 one. The WiFi only 32GB and 64GB models are also being discounted to $300 and $400 respectively which, in case you're not mathematically inclined, means the 64GB BlackBerry tablet will actually cost less than the 16GB version normally does. Obviously, though, you'll have to be quick -- we're sure this fire sale (tundra sale?) will have stocks running pretty low.
Tree-Mobil... sorry, T-Mobile and Walmart are offering up an exclusive "No Annual Contract" deal for commitment-phobic customers who want to get 4G mobile data. The $30 a month Monthly4G plan gives you unlimited mobile data, with the first 5GB coming down through America's so-called largest 4G network. After you pass that limit, your data shuffles down at 2G speeds. You also get unlimited text messages and 100 included minutes of talk, but you're probably more interested at getting at that data, aren't you? The service will be available from October 16th, to coincide with Walmart swelling its range of budget T-Mob handsets to six, including its first pre-paid 4G handset. After the break we've got some official looking words, neatly arranged into a press release.

Continue reading T-Mobile and Walmart offer 4G with no long-term contract, avoiding the pain of divorce

T-Mobile and Walmart offer 4G with no long-term contract, avoiding the pain of divorce originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 03 Oct 2011 10:42:00 EST. After inking a wholesale spectrum agreement with Sprint last year, Leap's going for broke and rolling its "value-driven" Cricket service out nationwide on September 25th. The expansion includes a sprinkling of Walmart stores, Dollar General and even cable-shopping channel HSN, but the majority of its new reach will come from a partnership with Best Buy. In addition to offering monthly plans for dumb and smartphones alike, the operator's also serving up specific Muve Music service packages to play nice with three upcoming handsets. Along with the Samsung Vitality and ZTE Chorus (both to be available before the holidays), Cricket's introducing its first ZTE smartphone -- the Score. Don't go looking for high-end specs here, as the 3.5-inch Android device runs Gingerbread atop a 600MHz processor and includes a 3.2 megapixel camera. Feature phone users will also get a couple of new options to choose, with the Huawei Pillar and Samsung Chrono offered on the provider's PAYGo service. If you're in the mood to dig through PR spiel, skip past the break for a trio of pressers.
Continue reading Cricket takes a great leap forward, expands footprint with a little help from retail friends

Cricket takes a great leap forward, expands footprint with a little help from retail friends originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 22 Sep 2011 17:51:00 EST. If you haven't heard of the Sharp FX Plus, you must not be the type to troll the halls of your local Walmart. The phone went on sale there a few weeks back, and a PCD rep just confirmed it'll soon venture outside Walmart's massive aisles, hitting select AT&T <strike>stores</strike> "channels" by the end of the month. We spotted it tonight as we were wandering around a New York City media event. There it was, sitting on a lone table, overshadowed by the likes of the HTC Thunderbolt and Incredible 2. Alas, the device on hand wasn't active, so we didn't get to peek the software / performance, but hit the break for some quickie impressions of just how much hardware this free phone'll get you.
Walmart and its MVNO partner, TracFone, are preparing to plunge into the shallow depths of Android with the Samsung Galaxy Precedent. While little is known about the device itself, it appears strikingly similar to the Samsung Prevail, from the chunky volume rocker and external microSD card slot on the side of the phone, to the absent flash on the rear. Of course, Straight Talk's primary selling point with the Precedent is the price itself, which -- according to a promo video for the device -- is said to be just shy of $150 off-contract. This, combined with Wally World's competitive pricing of $45 per month for unlimited voice, text and data, could be a boon for many users who rely on Verizon for coverage (assuming this is a CDMA phone, anyway). Can't wait for August 12th for Nintendo's 3DS price drop to take effect? Good news, neither could two giant retailers, apparently. Walmart reportedly got the ball rolling yesterday, cutting the asking price down from $250 to $170 in-store, and Target quickly followed suit -- the price is still listed as $250 on both sites for the moment. Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata acknowledged late last month that the drops, officially scheduled for August 12th, were due to concerns from retailers and game designers. As Joystiq points out, those who buy the console before the switchover is official will likely be able to take advantage of the price drop and Nintendo's offer of free games for early adopters. Score.
Walmart, Target jump the gun on Nintendo 3DS price drops originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 11 Aug 2011 09:20:00 EST. We're not keeping a countdown timer for the Samsung Conquer 4G, nor have we met anyone who is. Still, if you lifted your head off the pillow this morning with perfect knowledge that only eleven days remain before the handset wanders onto Sprint shelves, this bit of news may be of great interest. Walmart's offering the inexpensive WiMAX handset on pre-order -- not $100, not even $50, but completely gratis. Not bad for a 4G phone that hasn't even made it into stores yet, eh? The internals are hard to turn down: a 1GHz CPU, 3.5-inch display, a 3.2MP shooter on rear and 1.3MP up front, 512MB of RAM, and a 1500mAh battery all help the phone keep a modest (yet appealing) reputation. It's no Epic 4G Touch, but at least the price is right.
Alas, the inexorable might of iTunes has, at last, become too much to bear. Chin up, Walmart, we won't be coming to you for the new Kanye jam (not that we ever would), but we'll still head on down when we're in need of damn near anything else.
Walmart to shutter its online music store, somewhere Steve Jobs is smiling originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 10 Aug 2011 02:16:00 EST. After playing peek-a-boo on a Walmart brochure last week, the Sharp FX Plus just became a bona fide reality. Featured as an exclusive to the retain chain, the Sidekick-emulating Android handset has its own piece of real estate on its online store. The AT&T phone's offered for free with a two-year contract ($350 without the commitment), though it's currently backordered. We're not seeing anything new on the spec sheet: it comes preloaded with Android 2.2, has a 3.2-inch display, and holds a grand total of 512MB internal memory (expandable to 32GB via microSD). Throwing a three megapixel camera into the mix doesn't earn any wows, either, but to be fair, it's meant to be a respectable yet inexpensive option for messaging fanatics. And it has a plus at the end of its name -- that's gotta count for something, right?
Sharp FX Plus for AT&T quietly goes on sale at Walmart originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 02 Aug 2011 14:29:00 EST. Just as paper adds fuel to a fire, so does an official Walmart brochure with images of new phones. The latest exclusive to come out of Wally World is the Sharp FX Plus (Google lawsuit, anyone?), an Android 2.2-powered follow-up to last year's blip on the AT&T radar. The photo confirms that this is indeed identical to the puzzling Sharp Android slider that appeared in fuzzy renders two months ago, only with an AT&T logo on the bottom to make it look all the more official. The brochure indicates the FX Plus will feature Froyo pre-installed (upgradeable to Gingerbread soon enough, we assume), a 3.2-inch display, and Audience's earSmart noise cancellation technology. It's unclear when we'll see it hit store shelves or how much it'll set us back; even if we knew, the phone isn't likely to deter a lot of keyboard lovers from getting something as desirable as the Samsung i927. At least AT&T's QWERTY Android lineup is filling out fast after a lengthy drought.
Roughly 18 months after plunking down the cash for Vudu, Walmart has finally made the streaming media service an integrated part of its web store. Fans of digital video can now stop by the discount retailer's site and rent flicks for between $1 and $5.99 or purchase them $4.99 and up. The service compliments Walmart's sizable physical media library with over 20,000 titles that can be played directly from the website, as well as on Vudu-enabled devices like connected TVs, Blu-ray players, and steaming media boxes such as the Boxee Box. Pew pew. Those are the sounds we instantly hear whenever we come across Motorola's Photon 4G. Sadly, the soon-to-be dual-core star of Sprint's smartphone lineup won't come pre-loaded with a laser soundboard on July 31st, but it can be pre-ordered now -- for a significant markdown. All it takes is a quick internetting trip to either Wirefly or Walmart, where this WiMAX handset's up for a $20 - $40 discount. It's not a massive price chop on par with free, but it should move some yellow-tinged operator inventory. If walking the straight and narrow's your bag, you could still always opt for the direct carrier two-year contract option -- but why? Hit the source to get yourself in line for this cut-rate beast.
Motorola Photon 4G gets the bargain bin treatment at Wirefly, Walmart originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 15 Jul 2011 02:12:00 EST. Dying to get your hands on HP's TouchPad before it's available on July 1st? According to Pre Central, a visit to either Best Buy or Walmart may afford you the opportunity. During the past few days, the stores have apparently begun quietly displaying demo-loaded versions of the slate. The device went up for pre-order about a week ago, but for webOS hopefuls still contemplating whether to take the Palm-rooted plunge, a pre-release impression may not be a bad grab between socks and motor oil. Don't feel like taking a trip to Wally World, you say? You'll find a video overview past the break; although the box to the left has us wondering if now's a good time for getting lucky...

Continue reading HP TouchPad veers into stores early, flaunts its webOS moves (video)

HP TouchPad veers into stores early, flaunts its webOS moves (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 27 Jun 2011 22:25:00 EST. Typically, the whole fun of spotting products in the wild is that they haven't been officially announced to the world yet, but in the case of the Acer Iconia Tab A100, we're just amazed it's finally here, and that it's so... unassuming. Just weeks after rearing its head in FCC drawings, the delayed Tab has quietly surfaced at Walmart with a price tag of $349. That sticker there says it all, but for the money you'll get Tegra 2 innards with 8GB of internal storage, a 2 megapixel front-facing camera, and a 5 megapixel one 'round the back. And of course, it runs Android 3.0 at a time when most other 7-inchers still tap out at Android 2.3 -- possibly the reason it was delayed in the first place. There's no listing on Walmart's website just yet, and our tipsters indicated it wasn't actually on display. Still, if we're seeing a price and tag, that means we're beyond the point of any more delays... right?

Update: What you see in the wild is a display tag -- not the elusive A100, of course. You can't pop into a Walmart to buy one yet, but if that sticker is any indication, that'll change soon.

Update 2: One sneaky reader snagged a sheet of wally-world pricetags, see the A100's barcode hanging with tags for the Iconia A500 and HP Touchpad after the break.

It's true, the TouchPad, HP's inaugural webOS tablet, won't go on sale in the states until July 1, but that doesn't mean you can't claim yours pronto. She's up for pre-order at a long list of retailers that includes Amazon, NewEgg, Best Buy, Walmart, Staples, Radio Shack, J&R, Office Max, Office Depot, Costco, Sam's Club, PC Richard & Son, Micro Center, and even Nebraska Furniture Mart. You'll see it listed on HP's site, too, but the company's only accepting orders for businesses at the moment. As expected, the tab comes in two flavors: a 16GB version for $499.99 and a 32GB model that'll set you back $599.99. Both of 'em pack a dual-core 1.2GHz Snapdragon processor, accelerometer, gyroscope, compass, stereo speakers, Touch-to-Share, a 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera, and, of course, a gussied-up version of webOS optimized for that 9.7-inch display. Intrigued? Hit the exhaustive list of source links below to scoop one up for yourself.
Looks like Blake Griffin will have to find some other unreleased gadget to wave in front of our noses, because his beloved Vizio tablet will soon be available to all the little people who shop at Walmart. An internal schedule just faxed itself to our tin foil caps declaring that the Android 8-incher will start shipping in "week 26", which is Walmartish for six weeks from now. That might seem a long wait considering Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 is already giving us doe-eyes from the shelves at Best Buy, but the Vizio hits a friendlier price bracket (recently leaked at $349) and has its own set of tricks. The SRS speakers and universal remote function impressed us back in January, and there's also the Via Plus ecosystem that should integrate the tablet with Vizio TV apps and the upcoming Vizio Phone. Of course, Vizio is more than welcome to come over and pimp the rest of our home entertainment system like it did for Blake.
How do you combine a purely online service (Vudu) with a primarily brick-and-mortar retailer (Walmart)? Apparently the answer is cards, like Xbox Live and many other services before them, Vudu will have redeemable digital movie cards available for purchase at the store. Action flick Battle: Los Angeles is first up, with $14.96 cards hanging up in Walmart entertainment sections everywhere starting today. Unfortunately, it's for a standard definition stream only. It does save a couple of bucks off of the $16.96 DVD price, but with no hope of trade or even lending to a friend it's tough to justify as a bargain over the PS3-demo packing Blu-ray. While reaching out to retail customers with cards and PC streaming is fine, these standard-def limitations won't play well with an existing (albeit niche) audience that has come to expect high quality 1080p streams and surround sound.
Continue reading Vudu movie purchases get physical, starting with Battle: Los Angeles movie cards

Vudu movie purchases get physical, starting with Battle: Los Angeles movie cards originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 14 Jun 2011 00:01:00 EST. Pitching it as an option for Father's Day gifts, the press release and accompanying blog post highlight the value at $78 for a Roku XD, but we're pretty sure for some all you need to say is MLB.tv. There's no word of any tie-ins with Walmart's Vudu service, but its hard to imagine the retailer being excited to move a box that won't eventually include access to its own offerings.
Continue reading Roku streamers officially available at Walmart, no Vudu channel in sight

Roku streamers officially available at Walmart, no Vudu channel in sight originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 13 Jun 2011 14:37:00 EST. Remember HTC's announcement that Walmart would receive a three-day exclusivity in advance of the Sensation 4G's "official" June 15th arrival at T-Mobile? Apparently the head start wasn't sufficient for Wally World, as many associates are now passing this hot little number across the counter without batting an eye. While some employees appear to have gotten the June 12th memo, the point is moot because Walmart's point-of-sale computers are more than willing to process the sales. So, if you're able to track down an unknowing (or empowered) sales clerk, those HSPA+ dreams might come true sooner than expected -- for the low price of $148.88. Now, who's up for some Walmart Bingo?
HTC Sensation 4G selling entirely too early at some Walmart stores originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 10 Jun 2011 14:25:00 EST. Following the usual Walmart pricing they're a buck under the usual MSRPs, but the more interesting question is whether this portends the arrival of the (Walmart-owned) Vudu as a channel on Roku devices. Wait, Vizio's concocting a tablet? For those with chronic short-term memory loss, you may have forgotten that America's so-called low-cost TV leader branched out a bit during this year's Super Bowl, but it's been dead quiet on the tablet front ever since dropping the Via and sticking with Tablet. Looks like that's about to change, though -- a courteous tipster handed off the screenshot you see above, highlighting the appearance of a 'VTAB1008' within Walmart's inventory system. The device was just added a couple of weeks ago, and while we're still no closer to knowing if Vizio's done the right thing and settled on Honeycomb, we do know that it'll be pricing this thing competitively. How competitively? $349... competitively. We'll keep you abreast of any release dates we see, but for now, catch up by having a gander at our preview video from a few months back.
Hey now, what's this? Looks like Walmart has made some space on its crowded shelves for the HP TouchPad. An eagle-eyed tipster sent in a shot from his local Wally World of a tag and some room just waiting to be filled up with the planet's first webOS slate. It's always possible that someone's just throwing out their latest Photoshop masterpiece, but the $599 mark certainly has an air of legitimacy (and matches what we saw, back in May). So why not swing by for a better look? And maybe pick up a few dozen iPhones while you're at it.
Quick! Someone tell Walmart Black Friday isn't for another five and a half months. With no new iPhone in sight, the retailer is selling the 16GB version for $147 on contract -- the kind of stunt we'd expect it to pull in an effort to reel in holiday shoppers. Why do we sound so unappreciative, you might ask? Easy: because you probably won't be able to get your hands on one. The sale, which applies to AT&T and Verizon models, lasts until June 30, and only an unspecified number of "select" stores will even be participating. No word on how many discounted phones Walmart has to shill, but both the black and white versions are sold out online, which doesn't exactly bode well for your chances of scoring one in person.

Walmart temporarily drops iPhone 4 price to $147, not that you'll be able to find one originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 07 Jun 2011 15:32:00 EST. Here's something to add to your long list of webOS-related rumors: OfficeMax may be getting the HP TouchPad this July. If the above document is to be believed, HP's new 9.7-inch tablet will be available at the retailer on July 17th in both 3G and 4G versions -- which is a bit puzzling, considering the company hasn't made any mention of WiMAX or LTE compatibility. As for that earlier Walmart gossip, another tipster provided PreCentral with a screenshot of the big box's database (after the break), which corroborates the $600 price tag we've been hearing about for the 32GB model. If this proves true, it'll be another month before we find out whether the slate truly lives up to HP's exceedingly high expectations.

Update: We received a note from a reliable source inside Office Max that not all details in the above sheet are correct -- specifically the talk of 3G / 4G versions are a little unreliable, given the sheet currently lists a 4G version of the PlayBook that OfficeMax does not have. Our source expects the OfficeMax TouchPad to be WiFi-only, but at least that July 17th date is looking accurate.

Continue reading HP TouchPad available at OfficeMax on July 17th?

HP TouchPad available at OfficeMax on July 17th? originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 30 May 2011 09:31:00 EST. Cleverly named Walmart Wireless, these showrooms are located in the front of the building -- next to the optical and banking outlets -- with an average size of 2,000 square feet. We're hearing that the trial was so successful that it'll soon expand said shops to an extra 150 locations by the year's end. It's hard to say which Wally Worlds will be the beneficiaries of the extended trial, but we're guessing you'll let us know if one invades your own down in comments below.
Walmart rolling out dedicated wireless shops to 150 stores originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 23 May 2011 21:45:00 EST. PlayBoy Magazine might not have had the HP TouchPad's price dead to rights, but it also might not have been far off the mark -- if this allegedly leaked Walmart database entry is correct, the 32GB version of the webOS slate will cost $599. PreCentral nabbed the above image, as well as supplementary documentation suggesting an $80 sticker price for the Touchstone Dock, $50 for a first-party case, $30 for a spare AC adapter and $70 for the official Bluetooth keyboard. Of course, that $599 price tag puts the 9.7-inch tablet squarely in the sights of Apple's 32GB iPad 2. We can't wait to see if it's worth the cash to pick up this underdog.
Walmart prices HP TouchPad 32GB at $599? originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 19 May 2011 22:22:00 EST.
