  • Warframe Update 13 teaches PS4 owners value of hydration

Warframe for PS4 is getting update lucky number 13, and the patch brings with it a not-insignificant number of changes. Weapons, attachments, skins, enemies and dojo customization features round out the list of what's new, but the highlights are the addition of a new character and what developer Digital Extremes is calling Melee 2.0. Melee 2.0 revamps the game's melee combat, giving characters more attacks and stances per weapon, while also re-balancing combat itself. The new melee system also allows players who want to do away with all those fancy-schmancy guns to unequip everything but their melee weapons. In a behind-the-scenes video, developers called the system an "homage" to game series like Devil May Cry and God of War. The new character, Hydroid, possesses mastery over the element of water, making him kind of like Aquaman. In space. But cooler. He can turn himself into a large spread of water that drowns enemies who step into it and summon giant tentacles made of water to smash and thrash his foes. He can wield multiple weapons, but his promo art shows him holding a cutlass and dagger. So in addition to being a space-ninja-Aquaman, he's also kind of pirate-like. We're okay with this. • Warframe PC update adds Zephyr, game hits 5.5 million users

What do you do when part of your userbase grows to 5.5 million users? If you're Warframe developer Digital Extremes, you add more features! Update 12 is live for PC users, and among its additions is a new Warframe, the air-driven Zephyr. As the above trailer shows, Zephyr is agile and uses wind-based attacks to supplement the damage dealt with guns. Among her abilities is Tornado, which stirs up twisters that can be modified by hurling elemental attacks into them. In contrast, the defense-oriented Turbulance coats Zephyr in a screen of wind, potentially deflecting projectiles back to their origins. Update 12 also revamps Warframe's HUD, makes duplicate mods listed in the Arsenal stack automatically, and expands the Grineer Forest's tile set, the pieces Warframe uses to build an environment. Although PC users received Update 12 on February 5, PS4 users are currently on Update 11.5, which added the Oberon Warframe. [Image: Digital Extremes]

  • Warframe listed for Xbox One by PEGI

Digital Extremes' co-op shooter Warframe is making its way to Xbox One, according to European ratings agency PEGI, which has listed the free-to-play game for Microsoft's console with a release date of today. We've reached out to Digital Extremes for comment. Warframe is currently free to play and available on PC and PS4. The game has had mixed reviews, mostly due to its cumbersome user interface system. If you've got a group of pals and are looking to try a co-op shooting, Warframe is at its best when you're actually playing the game instead of fighting the menus. Update: Developer Digital Extremes tells us, "We have nothing to announce at this time."

  • Free for All: MMORPGs for your new console

Consoles and MMOs do not have the stand-offish relationship that they used to have. In fact, there are so many different MMOs to choose from on consoles that it's seriously tempting to pick up one of the new ones -- the Xbox One or PlayStation 4 -- even though I wasn't planning on it for a long, long time. I enjoy using a controller with MMOs so much that I plan on covering the subject more in the future. So let's get to the list of MMOs that are currently on consoles or that will be coming out on consoles in the near(ish) future. Massively's own Mike Foster put together a fantastic list last summer, but I thought I would update and pass it on. After all, the new consoles are officially here... so be sure to reference the list when you need a new MMO to play on your shiny new console!

  • PS4 games can now be pre-ordered from your PS3

Sony has begun rolling out next-gen software pre-orders on the PSN and SEN stores, beginning with PS4 launch titles Knack and Warframe. This allows the current-gen PS3 to help pave the way for the upcoming PS4, kind of like an older sibling putting up wallpaper in a nursery to prepare for their new baby brother. D'aww. Users who log onto the PS3's version of the PlayStation Store can find the games by scrolling down to the "PS4 Preview" menu. Knack is listed at $59.99, while Warframe is free. Pre-odering a free-to-play game might seem strange, but doing so will net you in-game money and an exclusive weapon skin. These downloads will be ready to install on launch day for the PS4.

Both Divekick and Warframe will be available on PS4 when the console launches November 15. The news was revealed during the PlayStation Indie Arcade event tonight at PAX by Adam Boyes, VP of Publisher and Developer Relations at SCEA. Divekick, a deceptively complex two-button fighter, launched as a "Cross Buy" game on PS3 and PS Vita on August 20 in addition to Steam. Warframe, a free-to-play co-op shooter from Digital Extremes, is currently available on for the PC on Steam.

  • Coming soon to a console near you: MMOs

Remember E3 2013? That huge video games conference thing from earlier in the summer? Weeks have passed since Microsoft and Sony squared off in the Los Angeles convention center (while Nintendo posted up at Best Buy and Ouya sulked in the parking lot), but the news made there continues to reverberate through the games industry. One curious trend seems to have been missed amid the clashing of proverbial titans: There sure are a lot of MMOs and online-focused games due on consoles this generation. And since MMOs are the business of Massively, we thought it might be fun to compile a quick list of all the ones we can find that are either already available on our current consoles or set for launch on the next batch. The list, as it turns out, is pretty extensive.

  • Digital Extremes celebrates 3 million Warframe space ninjas

The latest update for robot-ninjas-in-space title Warframe went live last week, bringing fancy new weapons and content to all of you would-be interstellar assassins. But the new missions and items aren't the only big news from the launch; Digital Extremes also announced that Warframe has amassed over three million users since hitting open beta in March. Update 9 brought the NOVA warframe, designed by the community's Design Council, along with content expansions to the Orokin Void and Grineer Galleon zones. Additionally, Digital Extremes added five new prime weapon blueprints to discover, 14 new warframe helmets, and a redesigned fight with Captain Vor that ends with an all-new pistol blueprint.

Nestled deep within the Sony booth at E3 amongst a horde of gamewatchers was the Warframe demo. It's a PC title from Digital Extremes that will be released on the PS4 platform at launch. Free for anyone subscribing to PSN, Warframe is a third-person shooter that is definitely undertaking some experimentation in the graphics and control departments. The PS4 demo was graphically superior to plenty of titles, running in full 1080P without a hitch or glitch in performance. Controls were responsive (although they took some getting used to), and playing with a handful of players was exhilarating at the Sony booth. I'm used to more of a keyboard-and-mouse control setup, but console fraggers will feel right at home.

  • Warframe confirmed for PS4, will remain free-to-play

Warframe, the free-to-play co-op shooter from Digital Extremes, is coming to PS4 with the same microtransaction-based model, Creative Director Steve Sinclair tells IGN. Warframe is currently out on Steam for PC. It's a third-person sci-fi shooter that pits groups of players against invading enemies, with distinctive ninja overtones. "We hope we can make [free-to-play] attractive for the console audience," Sinclair says. "Instead of dropping 60 bucks on a six-hour game, [a person] might drop a few bucks here and there on our game, which gives some of our players 500 hours of entertainment." Digital Extremes is the Canadian studio behind the Unreal series, The Darkness 2 and the recent movie-inspired Star Trek.

  • DC Universe Online and PlanetSide 2 confirmed for PlayStation 4

Sony's next-gen console may not have a fancy tablet controller or an all-seeing, always-on eye that watches you watch things, but it does look as if it's getting a couple of high profile MMOs. Sony Online Entertainment has confirmed that both DC Universe Online and PlanetSide 2 are headed for the PS4 as free-to-play downloads later this year. DCUO is currently available on PS3, but PlanetSide 2 has yet to make a console appearance. This may be why more information is available as to the implementation of the former than the latter; DCUO's official Twitter account is currently fielding questions about the PS4 announcement, while PlanetSide 2's doesn't seem to be talking about it at all. For those keeping score, that's now at least four free-to-play MMOs due on the PS4 either at launch or soon after: War Thunder, Warframe, DC Universe Online, and PlanetSide 2. Larry Liberty (producer for DCUO) might have been onto something when he said the new console would be a "great platform" for MMOs.

  • Ask Massively: A new era of soft launches

    by

Neverwinter soft launched this week. What's a soft launch? It's when a game really shouldn't be launching yet and knows it and yet has to launch anyway for reasons probably involving money. Soft launches are incredibly confusing to old school gamers who are used to a certain kind of testing and release cycle, the uncomplicated kind that involves, you know, some testing and a release. Soft launches make games writers uncomfortable too. Why won't your weird special snowflake of a game launch fit into our perfectly planned box? Massively reader zmeul expressed his annoyance with us thusly: "I can't understand why some games get this 'soft launch' from you and others do not, even if the criteria are met." It's a brave new world out there, zmeul!

Dude, you have a futuristic pistol that can probably sever a building in half. Do you really need a sword as well? In any case, Mr. "Can't Make Up My Mind" up there and practically everyone in the universe is invited to checking out Warframe this weekend for the open beta. The open beta event begins on Friday the 15th at 12:00 p.m. EST and goes all the way until Tuesday the 19th at 9:00 a.m. Anyone can check it out during this timeframe provided that he or she registers on the official site (which is common sense, really). As a bonus incentive to seeing the marvel that is Warframe, all players who participate in the open beta will have access to an exclusive Braton Vandal weapon in the game's marketplace.
