What a crowded week! PlayStation Network PLAY continues with The Baconing, while the PS3 sees releases of Elevator Action Deluxe, the Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection, and more outside of the promotion. If you're a Plus user, you'll have an Assassin's Creed Revelations beta and a God of War Origins demo to play. Even the PSP has a new original game this week, ClaDun X2, and permanent price drops on some cool Square Enix games. Let's just hope the maintenance clears up soon so we can get all this stuff. Choose your platform to view the corresponding release list: (Note: Continue past the break to view both release lists.)

  • GDC08: SNK shows off some PSP fighter anthologies

We already know 2008 is going to be the year for new fighting games, both 2D and 3D. What we didn't quite expect was the huge display over at the SNK area of classic fighters and their respective compilations also getting a 2008 release. The video details some of the PS2 anthologies, but also goes into some of the PSP versions. If you're a fan of fighting games, new or old, this is your year. Embrace it, buy it roses, but keep it at arms length or it will say you're suffocating it and it needs some time to itself. Then the year will never, ever come back.[Thanks, LeadTester!]

  • World Heroes collection for PS2 coming next spring

World Heroes is certainly not SNK's crown jewel, nor is it the most polished among 2D fighting games, but the series, which includes over the top historical fighters based on historical figures, is not without its charms. Sometimes a dragon punch just can't scratch our itch, and when that happens Rasputin's mammoth hands (and feet) fit the bill. Now SNK has confirmed that it is bundling all four games in the franchise, including World Heroes, World Heroes 2, World Heroes 2 Jet, and World Heroes Perfect, together in a new compilation for the PlayStation 2. The collection, released last month in Japan as World Heroes Gorgeous, will be released in the U.S. in spring 2008 under the much less interesting name of World Heroes Anthology. With the PS2 on its way out, we can't help but admire SNK's efforts to keep the old girl on life support, while simultaneously frustrating those of us who forked over the geld to import the game originally thinking it wouldn't make an appearance stateside. Patience, it would seem, is a virtue.

We're going to have to take a break for this week's European Virtual Console update for a little media bias. Look, it's Castlevania. Some things are just sacred, or near enough to it to require a call to action. Go forth, gamers, and take up Simon's Quest. Vanquish evil. It'll make you feel good about yourself.Oh, there are other games as well, if you're that sort of person, including the first TurboDuo title released. Castlevania II: Simon's Quest -- NES -- 500 Wii points Gate of Thunder -- TurboDuo -- 800 Wii points World Heroes -- NeoGeo -- 900 Wii points

  • First American Neo Geo VC releases: fighters only

SNK Playmore USA sent out a press release informing us that three Neo Geo games will be available on the U.S. Virtual Console at some unspecified future date. Two of the three, Fatal Fury and World Heroes, are also slated to be among the first three Japanese Neo Geo titles on the Virtual Console. The third game, however, is not Magician Lord as it is in Japan, but Art of Fighting.Of course, most SNK fans are fighting game fans, so it does make some sense to swap out the side-scrolling action game for another of the Neo's classic fighters; however, we kind of enjoy variety. We are also a little disappointed that two of the available games can be found on inexpensive anthology discs on another system (we're also disappointed that VC Art of Fighting pretty much kills the possibility of a Wii release of its Anthology). Why not something like Waku Waku 7, that isn't currently available on a collection disc? Or how about a non-fighting game?Don't mistake our lack of enthusiasm for these particular games for lack of appreciation of Neo Geo VC games. We will totally be dropping multiples of 900 Wii Points for Neo Geo games, and doing so with big smiles. Just not these three games.
