So, we hear you're edging ever closer to pulling the trigger on a shiny new XPS 420, huh? Lucky you, as it looks like Dell just opened up your options. While the only processor choices on the XPS 630 are the E8500 and the absurdly expensive QX6850 (it's an $850 addition), the XPS 420 now has a half dozen CPUs to pick from. Most notably, users can now get their rig equipped with a Core 2 Quad Q9300 / Q9450, both of which provide much more oomph than the baseline chips while not forcing you to refinance your home and pick the QX9650. So, when can the aforesaid 630 expect similar selections?

Sure, it's a bit short on surprises, thanks to a couple of detailed leaks in recent months, but the Dell XPS 420 is now prepped for your ordering pleasure on Dell's online store. Prices start at $1,499, which will get you a fairly specced system and a 20-inch LCD. Other perks in the base system include a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, a 13-in-1 card reader, SideShow and an option for an "Xcelerator" to speed up video encoding, but on the traditional specs it's pretty firmly middle of the road: Vista Home Premium, 2GB of RAM, Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 processor and 256MB Radeon ATI HD 2600 XT for graphics. But hey, who needs muscle when you've got SideShow?

Dell's new XPS 420 may not officially be available until October 19th, but that hasn't stopped the folks at Acrofan from scoring a few shots of it in some less-than-flattering conditions, which you can peruse by hitting up the read link below. If that's not enough to whet your appetite for all things Dell, the site also snapped some pics of a new mouse that the company will apparently soon start shipping with its systems. There's not a whole lot of details on it (at least as far as we can tell from the translation) but, as you can see above, it is a corded mouse, with a few more curves than the standard Dell fare. Look for it to start shipping sometime in the fourth quarter of this year, according to Arcofan. Once again, hit up the appropriate read link below for a few more shots.

Next up in our week o' Dell scoops, a bit more on the XPS 420. We don't have much more info on specs than before (really, what else could you possibly need know?), but recent Dell docs have the 420 set for release on October 19th. Granted, that shouldn't be considered a final date -- Dell (among other companies) miss their internal launch dates all the time -- so don't be surprise if it's later. Oh, one other new bit: not that it's any surprise, but the 420 will be ready to rumble with DCTs for CableCARD Vista Media Center. A few more shots of the 420 all splayed open after the break.

Should anyone be wondering what Dell's got up its sleeve with its next-gen XPS system, here's the scoop: the XPS 420 will be appropriately bigger, badder, better equipped, and even have fun features like a hardware MPEG-4 encoder and SideShow display up top.
  • Core 2 Duo, Extreme, or Quad (up to 8MB) processor options
  • Intel X38 Express chipset, DDR2 800 (up to 8GB)
  • MiniView LCD 3 x 2-inch QVGA display (runs SideShow on the front, picture after the break)
  • Dell Xcelerator - dedicated media coprocessor for transcoding video streams to MPEG-4 formats. Can cut encode time on a 2 hour HD movie in half and use far fewer CPU cycles.
  • SATA II (with RAID 0 or 1 support)
  • PCI Express x16, gigabit Ethernet
  • (2) front USB, (6) rear, (2) internal; one front and rear 1394; one eSATA, frontal audio ports
