Abbey Games has sold 700,000 copies of its 2D god game, Reus, designer Manuel Kerssemakers told Joystiq at Gamescom. Reus launched in May 2013, and within its first three months, it brought in 235,000 sales. The 700,000 count comes from copies sold across Steam, GOG, Humble, Desura and Gamersgate. Sales of Reus have allowed Abbey Games to establish a studio with 16 people, some full-time and others as needed, Kerssemakers said. Abbey is now working on Renowned Explorers, a turn-based strategy game about a group of 19th century adventurers traveling the world and gathering treasures to show off at the World Expo. It's inspired by XCOM: Enemy Unknown, Fire Emblem, Indiana Jones and Jules Verne. Renowned Explorers is due out in the first quarter of 2015 for PC, Mac and Linux via Steam, and so far Abbey isn't interested in launching an early access version. "We're kind of traditional in that we want to release a full version," Kerssemakers said. "Reus people seemed to appreciate getting a full game."

Abbey Games, the studio behind colossus god game Reus, is working on its next project, a turn-based, ever-changing exploration game called Renowned Explorers – International Society. It follows a team of explorers in the 19th century as they attempt to find legendary treasures before the World Expo begins. As the captain, players gather a team of explorers and follow a series of leads to find specific treasures. Once a treasure is found, the game becomes turn-based as the team explores the location, encounters enemies and allies, and digs up resources. Abbey cites Jules Verne, Indiana Jones, XCOM: Enemy Unknown and Fire Emblem as inspirations. "To grant you a new unexplored world every game, Renowned Explorers will generate and pose new mysteries, challenges, characters and combinations every time you start," Abbey says. "Our new game is built to train you in the art of exploration, and it will reward you with deeper mysteries and rare treasure."

Reus, a 2D god game from indie studio Abbey Games, has roped in 235,000 sales since launching on May 16 across Steam, Gamersgate, GOG and Desura. Abbey sold 100,000 copies in the first two months alone. Reus costs $10 a pop, unless it's on sale – and it definitely was during the Steam Summer Sale, where it was given top billing for one day and sold for $5. The Steam feature doubled the game's existing sales numbers. Not bad for a studio founded last year by four guys, two of whom were students. Abbey used to be hesitant about sharing sales numbers, with cloning forefront in its mind, but games such as Vlambeer's Ridiculous Fishing have demonstrated that the better game can come out on top. This dispelled any lingering concerns about sharing data. "We figured out sharing sales figures is actually really important for the independent community," co-founder Manuel Kerssemakers told Joystiq. "For example, we have learned a great deal from Hitbox Team's discussion of their Dustforce sales in terms of what to expect. As soon as we think Reus is stuck in its long tail, we'll prepare a complete post-mortem like that as well so that people may know what decisions lead to what sales. This will help people judge whether creating the games they love is also a viable way to make a living."

Reus, the 2D god game from Abbey Games, is available today, right now, for $10 (€10, £7) on Steam, GOG, Desura and Gamersgate. It's PC only for now, with Mac and Linux ports planned. Reus offers a twist on the standard god game narrative, asking players to find balance in the world by controlling nature with four giants. The humans have a strong will of their own, and the player is tasked with ensuring they can thrive, but not too much, lest they become corrupted and destroy the planet. Reus is on sale on Steam, GOG and Desura, for 10 percent off ($9). If you want to show Abbey Games your full monetary appreciation today, Gamersgate is the way to go.
