dignified affair held yearly in Barcelona that companies take very seriously. For example, unlike <a href="http://www.engadget.com/event/ces-2012">CES</a>, there are lots and lots of suits -- after all, this <em>is</em> a congress. Here, some of the most unique and desirable handsets meet the eyes of press, analysts and buyers for the very first time. Accordingly, anxieties were high among company leaders as they put their best foot forward and held their breath for the first round of impressions. This year's show has been a wild ride, and we've seen many devices stretch the boundaries of our imagination. There were more than a few stunners, and as the dust settles, companies such as HTC, Nokia, LG, Huawei and Asus can all hold their heads high. Join us after the break as we reminisce the most notable smartphones from Mobile World Congress.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/01/mobile-world-congress-2012-smartphone-roundup/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Mobile World Congress 2012: smartphone roundup</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/01/mobile-world-congress-2012-smartphone-roundup/">Mobile World Congress 2012: smartphone roundup</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 01 Mar 2012 19:00:00 EST. In our first hands-on of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/10/acer-cloudmobile-revealed/">Acer CloudMobile</a>, a phone with a product design award under its belt, we weren't completely convinced that it was worthy of such a prize. However, we were given the opportunity to spend a significant amount of time with the device and previously unknown specs to go along with it. Here's what we discovered during our reacquaintance.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/acer-cloudmobile-hands-on-at-mwc2012/">Acer CloudMobile hands-on at MWC2012</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/acer-cloudmobile-hands-on-at-mwc2012/#4856775"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/02/dsc00164_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/acer-cloudmobile-hands-on-at-mwc2012/#4856776"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/02/dsc00165_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/acer-cloudmobile-hands-on-at-mwc2012/#4856777"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/02/dsc00166_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/acer-cloudmobile-hands-on-at-mwc2012/#4856779"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/02/dsc00167_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/acer-cloudmobile-hands-on-at-mwc2012/#4856780"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/02/dsc00168_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/01/specs-acer-cloudmobile-hands-on/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>More specs of the Acer CloudMobile revealed, we take a second look (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/01/specs-acer-cloudmobile-hands-on/">More specs of the Acer CloudMobile revealed, we take a second look (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 01 Mar 2012 10:45:00 EST. Acer's just previewed its latest entry to cloud computing, aptly titled AcerCloud, allowing users to access multimedia and data files remotely whether or not their main PC is asleep. The feature will be available free of cost on all future consumer <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/acer/page/2/">Acer PCs</a>. Acer's latest enlists the outfit's Always Connect service to wake up PCs from sleep mode, enabling transfer from smartphones and tablets. Among the services included are PicStream, which allows for cloud-based photo sharing, AcerCloud Docs, for storing and accessing (guess what?) documents, and clear.fi that allows for streaming of media from the cloud to almost any device. Compatibility is currently limited to Android smartphones and tablets, but support is apparently in the works for Windows-based devices. The feature will start popping up on new PCs in Q2 2012 and will launch worldwide in Q4. You can sign up now and get a notice when it's available.<br />

You can go ahead and add Acer and ViewSonic to Microsoft's long list of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/licensing+agreement/">patent licensees</a>. This morning, Redmond announced a pair of new licensing agreements with the two companies, just a few months after striking similar deals with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/27/microsoft-inks-android-patent-deal-with-itronix-causes-more-hea/">Itronix</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/29/microsoft-inks-android-patent-deal-with-velocity-micro-sound/">Velocity Micro</a>. Details, however, are few and far between, with Microsoft saying only that it will receive royalties from ViewSonic and that the patents in question pertain to both companies' Android tablets and smartphones. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/28/microsoft-says-android-infringes-on-its-patents-licenses-htc/6">Of course they do</a>. Both press releases await you, after the break.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/08/microsoft-adds-acer-viewsonic-to-patent-licensing-list/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Microsoft adds Acer, ViewSonic to patent licensing list</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/08/microsoft-adds-acer-viewsonic-to-patent-licensing-list/">Microsoft adds Acer, ViewSonic to patent licensing list</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 08 Sep 2011 09:27:00 EST. Acer's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/08/acer-liquid-mini-and-betouch-e210-hands-on/">Liquid Mini</a> won't be breaking speed records anytime soon, but at least it can <em>look</em> like a red hot racer, now that it's received the Ferrari treatment. Following in the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/01/acer-liquid-e-ferrari-special-edition-revs-up-android-2-1/">Liquid E</a>'s skid marks, this Liquid Mini Ferrari Edition features a vibrant red exterior emblazoned with the automaker's iconic shield, and ships preloaded with engine ringtones, racing-themed wallpaper and other apps. Under the hood, however, lies the same, Gingerbread-based handset, replete with 512MB of RAM, a 3.2-inch display, five megapixel camera and rather underwhelming 600MHz processor. No word yet on when the device will be hitting the raceway, but you can get a closer look at the source link, below.</div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/06/acers-liquid-mini-gets-ferrari-fied-doesnt-get-any-faster/">Acer's Liquid Mini gets Ferrari-fied, doesn't get any faster</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 06 Sep 2011 11:40:00 EST. Five months is a very long time to wait for the large-handed smartphone addict, but finally there is some good news, everybody! We previewed Acer's massive<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/14/acer-iconia-smart-hands-on-video/"> 4.8-inch phone / tablet hybrid</a> back in February and it looked like it would arrive in the U.S. sometime in April. It's now August and and according to Acer's Facebook page, we still have a month to wait. The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/phoneblet/">phoneblet</a> (Yes, there's already a name) retains the same specs we heard about in February: Snapdragon processor, twin cameras and Android 2.3 <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/gingerbread/">Gingerbread</a>. When it finally does arrive, it'll cost Europeans &euro;499 -- around $710.<br />

Acer promised a 4.8-inch, 1024 x 480 tabletphone <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/23/acer-reveals-4-8-inch-android-smartphone-with-1024x480-screen-re/">would arrive in April 2011</a>, and April's nearly through -- but don't cross off the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/14/acer-iconia-smart-hands-on-video/">Acer Iconia Smart</a> yet, because that brushed aluminum frame has just materialized at our favorite government institution. Yes, the FCC laid eyes on radiation test reports for the Android 2.3 device, which reveal that the quad-band GSM handset is headed to both Canada <em>and</em> the US. Given that the North American version only has 850, 1900 and 2100MHz 3G frequencies, it sounds like a lock for AT&amp;T. Inside, you'll find a 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8255 processor, 512MB each of ROM and RAM, an 8 megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash, a 2 megapixel front-facing cam, micro-HDMI output capable of 720p, a 1500mAh user-replaceable battery and all the usual 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1 and GPS trimmings you'd expect. Now, Acer, how about a new release date?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/26/acer-iconia-smart-hits-the-fcc-readies-to-smack-atandt-with-its-4/">Acer Iconia Smart hits the FCC, readies to smack AT&amp;T with 1024 x 480 screen?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 26 Apr 2011 21:34:00 EST. Well, would you look at what finally <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/23/acers-android-tablets-hands-on/">powered on</a>! Yep, Acer's brought its<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/23/acers-android-tablets-hands-on/"> 4.8-inch phone / tablet to MWC</a>, and not only is it finally ready to show off that beautiful 1024 x 480-resolution display but it also gave it a real name -- it's now the Iconia Smart. For those of you who aren't familiar with Acer's "100 percent phone, 100 percent tablet" that was <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/23/acer-reveals-4-8-inch-android-smartphone-with-1024x480-screen-re/">introduced back in November</a>, it packs a Snapdragon processor, Android 2.3, and is said to be coming to a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/08/acers-4-8-inch-phoneblet-will-head-to-a-us-carrier-this-year/">US carrier sometime in April</a>. <br />
<br />
Now that we're all up to speed on the details, we're ready to tell you that the device is a pretty cool one. It's obviously going to be for those with big pockets -- it's one long phone -- but the high resolution 4.8-inch widescreen panel makes it incredibly unique and nice for viewing pictures and movies. The actual feel of the phone is quite good -- it's made primarily of plastic, but the border surrounding the display seemed to be made out of some sort of metal. As we note in the video, the four buttons look as if they are flush with the bezel, but they're actually fairly stiff physical buttons. So, how's the software? Naturally Acer's taken to skinning <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/gingerbread">Gingerbread</a> a bit here -- there's an assortment of Acer widgets as well as that retooled homescreen you're seeing in the picture above. That said, we actually like Acer's neat webpage and media carousel widget. Hit the break for a short hands-on video. <br />

<div style="text-align: left;">Acer didn't just land in Vegas with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/iconia">Iconia tablets</a> galore -- it brought along its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/06/acer-announces-liquid-mini-and-betouch-e210-android-froyo-phones/">new Liquid Mini and BeTouch E210</a> Froyo smartphones. The 3.2-inch Liquid Mini is the most interesting of the two, and like its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/acerliquid">larger older brothers</a>, it's made of a black glossy plastic, which is bound to pick up more fingerprints than Sherlock Holmes. It will be actually be available in quite a number of hues, but Acer only had the black one on display. Still it's one cute phone, and with a 600MHz Qualcomm 7227 processor, 512MB of memory, and a 5 megapixel cam it's bound to fill Acer's mid-range smartphone offering quite nicely. That said, the unit we saw hanging around Acer's private suites wasn't working all that well -- in fact, it rebooted itself twice. This one was running Acer's own software layer on top of 2.2; the BeTouch E210 seemed to be running stock Froyo. Speaking of the BeTouch, it's a lot like the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/06/acer-betouch-e130-kicks-it-blackberry-style-but-runs-android-1/">E130</a> with its BlackBerry-like form factor and awesome physical keyboard, except the E210 has been slimmed down and upgraded to that aforementioned 600MHz Qualcomm CPU. The E310 on display was working much better than the Liquid and while it wasn't blazing fast, it kept up with our scrolling and navigating in and out of menus. No word on US availability, but they should be hitting the UK market sometime soon. Hit the break for some beauty shots. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/acer-liquid-mini-and-betouch-e210-hands-on/">Acer Liquid Mini and BeTouch E210 hands-on</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/acer-liquid-mini-and-betouch-e210-hands-on/#3761121"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/01/acerliquidminibetouch1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/acer-liquid-mini-and-betouch-e210-hands-on/#3761122"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/01/acerliquidminibetouch2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/acer-liquid-mini-and-betouch-e210-hands-on/#3761123"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/01/acerliquidminibetouch3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/acer-liquid-mini-and-betouch-e210-hands-on/#3761124"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/01/acerliquidminibetouch4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/acer-liquid-mini-and-betouch-e210-hands-on/#3761125"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/01/acerliquidminibetouch5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/08/acer-liquid-mini-and-betouch-e210-hands-on/">Acer Liquid Mini and BeTouch E210 hands-on</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sat, 08 Jan 2011 07:51:00 EST. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/acer">Acer's</a> just announced a couple of new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/android">Android</a> smartphones that are heading to the other side of the pond. Pictured on the left is the Froyo-powered Liquid Mini which -- as the name says for itself -- sports a humble 3.2-inch 480 x 320 capacitive LCD touchscreen, along with a 600MHz Qualcomm 7227 chip, 512MB of RAM and ROM each, and a 5 megapixel camera that records 480p video on the back. On top of DLNA connectivity for your home entertainment setup, the usual wireless goodness like WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, and FM radio are also present. Potential British buyers will be able to pick from one of the five color options -- blue, white, pink, yellow, and black -- when the Liquid Mini ships in April, with pricing to be announced.<br />
<br />
The beTouch E210 on the right comes with a portrait keyboard plus trackpad, but users will have to make do with a less thrilling set of specs: you get a 2.6-inch 320 x 240 resistive touchscreen (oh dear), 512MB ROM, 256MB RAM, and a 3.2 megapixel camera. But like the Liquid Mini, the Froyo-laden E210 also has the same 600MHz chip, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, and FM radio. Keep an eye out for it and its price come March in the UK..<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/06/acer-announces-liquid-mini-and-betouch-e210-android-froyo-phones/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Acer announces Liquid Mini and beTouch E210 Android Froyo phones</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/06/acer-announces-liquid-mini-and-betouch-e210-android-froyo-phones/">Acer announces Liquid Mini and beTouch E210 Android Froyo phones</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 06 Jan 2011 20:45:00 EST. The last we heard about Acer's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/acer,liquidmetal">Liquid Metal</a> smartphone, an Android 2.2 unit with a 3.6-inch display and a lovely aluminum exterior, it was getting ready for a UK launch at the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/13/acer-liquid-metal-handset-confirmed-for-end-of-october-in-uk-ha/">end of October</a>. There's just a little over a week left to meet that date, and all we have to show are some decidedly unofficial photos from <em>Droid Sans</em>. The first pic, above, shows off a very smudged up looking Liquid Metal (or what is said to be a Liquid Metal at least), but after that are photos of two mystery devices. The first of those (pictured below) has the same... distinctively lengthy form factor of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/gw990">GW990</a>, while the other device is a tablet that we've not laid eyes on before. It looks to be running Android 2.2 (or later) and is said to be "big enough to shift the iPad." We're not sure exactly how to parse that bit of auto-translation, but maybe it's a coded reference to JT Wang's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/23/acers-jt-wang-ipads-market-share-will-drop-to-about-20-percen/">prediction of doom</a> for the iPad's market share.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/21/acers-liquid-metal-spotted-in-the-wild-chilling-with-two-myste/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Acer's Liquid Metal spotted in the wild, chilling with two mystery friends</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/21/acers-liquid-metal-spotted-in-the-wild-chilling-with-two-myste/">Acer's Liquid Metal spotted in the wild, chilling with two mystery friends</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 21 Oct 2010 14:07:00 EST. It's not everyday that we come across an Android phone with an exposed keyboard, so naturally Acer's beTouch E130 caught our eye here at Computex. The BlackBerry-esque phone is equipped with a 2.6-inch QVGA touchscreen display, a scroll ball and a full QWERTY keyboard. In hand the device felt really solid, and though the screen is smaller than most Android phones, the rough-feeling scroll ball is great for navigating the menus. The keyboard is probably our favorite part of the phone -- like <a href="http://mobile.engadget.com/2008/06/19/nokia-e71-review/">Nokia's E71</a>, it has a rubber-like coating giving the keys a nice bounce. But all of that good stuff came to a bit of a halt when we realized that the E130 is part of Acer's lower end BeTouch line -- it packs only a 416MHz ST-Ericsson CPU, 256MB of RAM, and 512MB of ROM. Additionally, it runs a now-dated Android 1.6 OS. We guess we can't expect <em>every</em> smartphone to boast a 1GHz Snapdragon and a beta version of Froyo, though. Vid's after the break, if that's what you're into. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/acer-betouch-e130-hands-on/">Acer BeTouch E130 hands-on</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/acer-betouch-e130-hands-on/#3046153"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/acerbetouch01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/acer-betouch-e130-hands-on/#3046154"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/acerbetouch02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/acer-betouch-e130-hands-on/#3046155"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/acerbetouch03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/acer-betouch-e130-hands-on/#3046156"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/acerbetouch04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/acer-betouch-e130-hands-on/#3046157"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/acerbetouch05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/06/acer-betouch-e130-kicks-it-blackberry-style-but-runs-android-1/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Acer beTouch E130 kicks it BlackBerry-style, but runs Android 1.6 (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/06/acer-betouch-e130-kicks-it-blackberry-style-but-runs-android-1/">Acer beTouch E130 kicks it BlackBerry-style, but runs Android 1.6 (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sun, 06 Jun 2010 10:22:00 EST. We've seen Acer's Android 2.1-powered Stream a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/29/stream-sits-still-for-the-camera-shows-off-its-camcorder-abilit/">time</a> or two <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/27/acer-android-powered-stream-gets-official-gets-handled-lives-u/">before</a>, but we couldn't resist the opportunity to give it a look ourselves here in Taipei. Acer's full gamut of smartphones were out on display, but this 3.7-inch monster was easily the standout. Build quality was remarkable, and the screen was downright luscious; viewing angles on the AMOLED panel were nothing short of incredible, and the haptic feedback was a nice touch, too. The 1GHz <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Snapdragon/">Snapdragon</a> CPU handled the transitions within the OS with poise, and it actually felt a good bit lighter than some of the other touchscreen-based smartphones that we've played with recently. 'Course, we couldn't help but long for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Froyo/">Froyo</a>, but with a hardware set this powerful, we wouldn't be shocked to see it handed down shortly. Vid's after the break, vaquero.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/acer-stream-hands-on-at-computex-2010/">Acer Stream hands-on at Computex 2010</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/acer-stream-hands-on-at-computex-2010/#3033591"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/acer-stream-computex-20104021_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/acer-stream-hands-on-at-computex-2010/#3033592"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/acer-stream-computex-20104022_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/acer-stream-hands-on-at-computex-2010/#3033593"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/acer-stream-computex-20104023_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/acer-stream-hands-on-at-computex-2010/#3033594"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/acer-stream-computex-20104024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/acer-stream-hands-on-at-computex-2010/#3033595"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/acer-stream-computex-20104025_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/02/acer-stream-preview-at-computex-2010/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Acer Stream preview at Computex 2010</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/02/acer-stream-preview-at-computex-2010/">Acer Stream preview at Computex 2010</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 02 Jun 2010 06:14:00 EST. While the US was busy delivering a certain tablet product yesterday, British sci-fi fans sat comfortably at home for a brand new <em>Doctor Who</em> series. We won't go into too much detail here, but the eleventh Doctor -- played by the charming Matt Smith -- was spotted writing a computer virus and sending pictures on a BBC-debranded <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/blackberry+storm">Blackberry Storm</a>, minutes before the aliens were to incinerate Planet Earth. Perhaps the freshly-regenerated Time Lord's a fan of the virtual keyboard? As a bonus, the Doctor also borrowed a disguised 15-inch <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/acer+aspire%2Claptop">Acer Aspire laptop</a> for some virtual face time with chief brainiacs around the world, and then promptly reminded the owner to "delete your internet history" in reference to, well, something more disturbing that he found on the computer. And who are we to question the orders of a time traveler?<br />
<br />
<strong>Update: </strong>Turns out the new Lead Writer Steven Moffat learned of his job offer <a href="http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/cult/a98227/moffat-offered-doctor-who-job-by-email.html">on a Blackberry</a> back in June 2008. Too bad the Storm wasn't due out for another five months, but a quick trip through the time vortex could turn this into an amusing coincidence.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sceen-grab-blackberry-storm-saves-the-world-in-new-doctor-who/">Screen Grabs: Blackberry Storm saves the world in new Doctor Who</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sceen-grab-blackberry-storm-saves-the-world-in-new-doctor-who/#2861681"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/04/bbstormdw104032010_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sceen-grab-blackberry-storm-saves-the-world-in-new-doctor-who/#2861686"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/04/bbstormdw604032010_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sceen-grab-blackberry-storm-saves-the-world-in-new-doctor-who/#2861684"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/04/bbstormdw404032010_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sceen-grab-blackberry-storm-saves-the-world-in-new-doctor-who/#2861689"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/04/bbstormdw904032010_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sceen-grab-blackberry-storm-saves-the-world-in-new-doctor-who/#2861690"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/04/bbstormdw1004032010_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/04/screen-grabs-blackberry-storm-saves-the-world-in-new-doctor-wh/">Screen Grabs: Blackberry Storm saves the world in new Doctor Who</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sun, 04 Apr 2010 16:17:00 EST. If you thought the (admittedly weak) <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/15/acer-liquid-e-rolls-with-with-android-2-1-underclocked-768mhz-s/?s=t5">Liquid e</a> was all <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Acer/">Acer</a> had in store for Mobile World Congress, you'd be badly mistaken. We've got a foursome of other smartphones on tap, so we won't waste any time breaking 'em down. Up first is the neoTouch P300 and neoTouch P400, each of which ship with Windows Mobile 6.5.3. The P300 gets a luscious 3.2-inch WQVGA touch panel, slide-out QWERTY keyboard (backlit, no less!), WiFi and a March ship date, while the May-bound P400 packs a 3.2-inch HVGA touchscreen, 600MHz Qualcomm 7227 CPU, WiFi and a 3.2 megapixel camera. Moving on, there's the beTouch E110 (shipping in March in black and dark blue), complete with a 2.8-inch touch panel, Android, 3 megapixel camera, FM tuner and a 1,500mAh battery. Finally, the beTouch E400 touts Android 2.1, the same 600MHz power plant as on the P400, a 3.2-inch HVGA resistive touchscreen, smart LED lighting (acts as a message indicator) and an April ship date. Pricing remains a mystery on the whole lot, but we're hoping to learn more as we dig our heels in at the show.<br />

We knew good and well Acer was <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/27/acer-to-unveil-8-to-10-phones-next-year-show-more-love-to-andro/">prepared to ship</a> a few more Android phones in the new decade, and it's sure starting off on the right foot here in Barcelona. Just a few months after the original Liquid began to ship, along comes a minor upgrade in the Liquid e. The main improvements? For starters, Android 2.1 has supplanted <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/14/acer-liquid-mixes-snapdragon-and-android-1-6-donut-for-a-movab/">Android 1.6</a> as the onboard operating system, but much to our displeasure, the Snapdragon in this bad boy is <i>still</i> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/02/acer-liquids-snapdragon-processor-to-be-clocked-at-just-768mhz/">underclocked to 768MHz</a>. If you still have the will to care, you'll get to enjoy the 3.5-inch WVGA display, 5 megapixel camera (with AutoFocus), inbuilt GPS (or so says the specs sheet), 802.11b/g WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0, 256MB of RAM, an accelerometer, 3.5mm headphone jack and support for 7.2Mbps HSDPA. Head on past the break for the full release, but don't expect to find any pricing or release details.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/15/acer-liquid-e-rolls-with-with-android-2-1-underclocked-768mhz-s/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Acer Liquid e rolls with Android 2.1, underclocked 768MHz Snapdragon</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/15/acer-liquid-e-rolls-with-with-android-2-1-underclocked-768mhz-s/">Acer Liquid e rolls with Android 2.1, underclocked 768MHz Snapdragon</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 15 Feb 2010 08:19:00 EST. Looks like quite a few folks have got their hands on the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/liquid,acer">Acer Liquid</a> as of late, and lucky for us they've been rather loose-lipped with their thoughts on the subject. As <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/02/acer-liquids-snapdragon-processor-to-be-clocked-at-just-768mhz/">suspected</a>, the handset is running a 1GHz Snapdragon that's been under-clocked to 768MHz. And it looks like Acer didn't go crazy with the User Experience either, pretty much staying true to its Google Android 1.6 roots, albeit with a number of additions, including: social networking integration (Facebook and Flickr contacts and photo sharing), nemoPlayer for multimedia files, DataViz for Microsoft Exchange support, and the Spinlets music streaming service. In addition, Acer has redesigned some of the widgets, including the clock and the task manager, which now includes a preview of open apps. All-in-all, it seems to be a pretty solid Android handset with a few useful additions -- but as always, the verdict is out until we get our hands on one. In the meantime, hit up the read links below for a generous helping of screenshots, hands-on pics, and impressions.<br />

Ugh. Just weeks after <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/14/acer-liquid-mixes-snapdragon-and-android-1-6-donut-for-a-movab/">we figured</a> that Acer's first Android-based handset would indeed ship with a 1GHz <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Snapdragon/">Snapdragon</a> processor, a new slide over at an international Liquid presentation is suggesting otherwise. As you can clearly see above, it looks as if the Qualcomm-sourced CPU will be underclocked to just 768MHz, which makes little to no sense on the surface. Granted, most average consumers couldn't care less about the CPU in their next smartphone, but it seems reasonable to think that the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/16/acer-liquid-slips-through-human-fingers-but-not-before-taking-p/">Liquid</a> will lag behind its 1GHz contemporaries when used side-by-side. Who knows though -- maybe this is just the thing necessary to squeeze a full week of battery life out of this thing. Or not.<br />

Ah <em>DigiTimes</em>, what would a morning be without your rumors sourced from within Taiwan's component suppliers? Today's tattle has Acer launching its A1, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/17/acers-four-other-phones-in-the-flesh-not-powered-on/">C1/E1, F1, and L1</a> smartphones "at the end of September and in the fourth quarter" -- that a four-month spread. Interesting piece in the <em>New York Times</em> today about Acer -- the company is about to ride the tidal wave of netbooks and other el-cheapo computers straight to the number two spot on the PC sales chart. That's a big deal -- no non-US company has ever made it so high -- and it's interesting that the strategies Acer took to get there are the same things Dell's been trying to do lately: it's heavy on low-cost, stylish laptops and netbooks, it keeps inventory extremely lean, and it relies on an extensive set of retail partnerships in Europe. What's more, the Aspire One has been the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/09/acer-takes-the-most-netbooks-sold-crown-from-asus/">best-selling netbook for a while</a> now, and we'd say Acer's way out in front of the <a href="http://engadget.com/tag/culv">CULV</a> thin-and-light race with the <a href="http://engadget.com/tag/timeline">Timeline</a> -- in fact, we'd say the only open question here is whether the company can take all this computing success and translate it to something worthwhile in the smartphone space. Based on what <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2009/06/21/acers-behemoth-m900-reviewed-sounds-like-a-must-skip/">we've seen so far</a>, we've <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2009/04/20/acers-f900-reviewed-in-exhaustive-detail/">got our doubts</a>, but we'll see what those <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2009/02/17/acer-working-on-two-android-phones-to-launch-this-year/">super-secret</a> <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2009/04/29/acer-already-working-on-several-android-devices-smartphone-in/">Android sets</a> look like before we place our bets.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/desktops/" rel="tag">Desktops</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/laptops/" rel="tag">Laptops</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/28/acer-poised-beat-dell-become-number-two-pc-maker/">Acer poised to beat Dell, become number two PC maker</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sun, 28 Jun 2009 23:03:00 EST. If you've a proven track record of delivering solid products to consumers (much like <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Garmin/">Garmin</a> has), we'll cut you some slack for awhile if you happen to hit a snag or two along the way while bringing a completely new device to market. But after more <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/10/garmin-delays-nuvifone-g60-yet-again-q3-launch-now-planned?icid=sphere_blogsmith_inpage_engadgetmobile">delays</a> than we care to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/17/garmin-asus-nuvifone-g60-to-rock-limo-launch-in-1h-2009/">count</a> and a 1.5 year gap between <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/30/hands-on-with-the-garmin-nuvifone/">announcement</a> and right now, the benefit of the doubt vanishes. To that end, we couldn't be happier to report that Garmin's president and COO Cliff Pemble feels that it's "getting very close" to a carrier launch (<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/01/garmin-nuvifone-hitting-atandt-for-500-plus/">AT&amp;T, perhaps</a>?) in the US. Said statement was given at a shareholders meeting today, and he also mentioned that the Asian market would see the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Nuvifone/">Nuvifone</a> "this month or in early July." We appreciate the update, but at this point, the burden of proof is squarely on you, Garmin.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.electronista.com/articles/09/06/05/garmin.nuvifone.close/">Electronista</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/acer/" rel="tag">Acer</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/05/garmin-getting-very-close-to-a-us-nuvifone-launch-or-so-it-says/">Garmin "getting very close" to a US Nuvifone launch... or so it says</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 05 Jun 2009 17:41:00 EST. 'Course, he could be spitting out positive vibes to just make sure we don't <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2009/04/22/acer-says-itll-likely-have-one-android-phone-this-year/">forget about 'em</a>, but here's hoping Mr. Lanci takes him own quotes seriously. We'll be watching -- like Rockwell, minus the catchy chorus.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cellphones/" rel="tag">Cellphones</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/29/acer-already-working-on-several-android-devices-smartphone-in/">Acer already working on "several Android devices," smartphone included</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 29 Apr 2009 13:42:00 EST. <div align="left">We've already heard plenty of talk that Acer would be rolling out <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/17/acer-working-on-two-android-phones-to-launch-this-year/">one or more</a> Android phones this year, but it looks like the company's head of mobile phone products, Aymar de Lencquesaing, has now come out and made the clearest statement yet on the matter, saying that while Acer has "not made any formal announcement of an Android-based device," it is "likely that we'll have one in 2009." No more details beyond that, unfortunately, but there has been some speculation that Acer's first Android phone would be known as the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/23/acer-a1-touchscreen-android-phone-to-arrive-in-september/">A1</a>, which may or may not be similar to the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/17/acers-four-other-phones-in-the-flesh-not-powered-on/">mysterious C1</a> touchscreen phone pictured above, and could land as soon as September. In related news, Acer has also reaffirmed its commitment to become one of the top five handset makers by 2012, adding that it would need to sell 20 to 25 million devices a year to meet that goal. <br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.moconews.net/entry/419-taiwanese-computer-maker-acer-expects-to-introduce-android-phone-in-200/">mocoNews.net</a>]</div>

Unfortunately for the proud parent it seems one randy model just couldn't keep quiet until then, caught in the wild by Mr. Blurrycam with its QWERTY showing. No details are known beyond its rather chunky look when the keyboard is positioned like this, but we'll surely have all the details for you in about two weeks -- after politely excusing ourselves from the dance floor, of course.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/others/" rel="tag">Others</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/04/one-of-acers-mystery-smartphones-exposed-ahead-of-official-unve/">One of Acer's mystery smartphones exposed, doesn't look so smart</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 04 Feb 2009 07:46:00 EST. The latest report has company chairman JT Wang stating that the eventual launch may not happen until Q2 2009 (red flag), and he blamed the possible delay on the ongoing negotiations with carriers across the globe. If you'll recall, Acer's been talking up its own phone ever since it took E-Ten Information Systems in <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/03/acer-snaps-up-glofiish-maker-e-ten-for-290-million/">under its wings</a>, but many months later, we still have no concrete evidence that anything is going on (mobile wise, at least) behind the firm's doors. According to the firm's president, it's aiming to introduce the handset "near the end of this year or early next year," and it will indeed "be Microsoft-based." Gianfranco Lanci also suggested that smartphones could represent up to 10-percent of the company's revenue within the next few years. Notably, the outfit is apparently planning to move its phones via mobile network operators, and while it typically takes six to nine months to sweet talk a carrier into marketing a new smartphone, it hopes to use its "existing relationships with telecommunications companies to speed up such sales." Sadly, we're not given any clues about <em>what</em> carriers it's aiming for, but it won't be too awfully long before we're sure to find out.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/others/" rel="tag">Others</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/windows-mobile/" rel="tag">Windows Mobile</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/e-ten/" rel="tag">E-TEN</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/27/acer-aims-to-launch-first-smartphone-around-years-end/">Acer aims to launch first smartphone around year's end</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sun, 27 Apr 2008 12:16:00 EST.
