What do dancing penguins, bubbly pop music, and pink-clad spellcasters with treble clef harp weapons have in common? They're all part of a new Aion Bard preview video, of course. The Bard is one of three new classes coming in the fantasy title's 4.0 update, and the one-minute clip after the cut is our first opportunity to get a glimpse of the archetype in action. And don't worry, it's not as wince-inducingly cute as it sounds, given that the Bard has plenty of nifty spell effects to go along with her combat and crowd-control abilities. It seems with rumblings of an open beta reverberating through the interweb, Aion is never far from the thoughts of the avid MMO player or Team Massively. NCsoft just sent through a new (and shiny) batch of lovely Cleric-centric screenshots for your perusal. Focusing on the first of two subclasses, Clerics are healers who use "the power of magic to strengthen allies and heal their wounds. They can resurrect their allies. They are formidable opponents in melee when using a mace and a shield."Focusing on a rather gruff-looking Elyos, a dainty female Asmodian with scary eyes and another Asmodian sporting what looks like a new set of wings, the images are pure eye candy. Got beta withdrawal symptoms yet? Well check out our gallery below and hang on in there. Over the coming weeks we'll be bringing even more Aion news your way as we hurtle towards the much anticipated launch.%Gallery-70359%

  • Redefining MMOs: Breaking the Mould

Just think about that title for a second. Of all the games genres you've played, isn't it MMOs that feel most like carbon copies of one another? Level systems, the character creation process and class archetypes are nearly universal, with hundreds of games sharing the same characteristics. Don't you sometimes wish that MMO developers would step back and reassess the genre they have collectively created? This week, as part of Massively's "Redefining MMOs" series, it's my turn to muse on a topic and I've chosen to look as whether it's time the MMO mould (or mold, as my American editors would say) should be broken and re-examined. Many aspects of MMOs, such as classes, levelling, raids and bosses, endure simply because they work. After all, if it ain't broke why fix it? But sometimes it feels like you need a breath of fresh air, to step back and smell the roses. This is especially the case when carbon copy MMOs start being rolled out. In the last few months I've tried MMO after MMO and can literally play each one blindfolded. Mages are mages, warriors are warriors and clerics by any other name are still priests. While the archetypes of these classes -- the healer, the tank, the caster, the melee damage-dealer and the pet-toting badass -- differ slightly between genres and titles, they are part of a formula that seems to define the MMO genre. As we inch closer to the Aion launch on 22nd and 25th September (NA and EU, respectively), the excitement about NCsoft's latest MMO is reaching fever pitch. Yesterday, G4TV released the second Aion vidcast (the first one was hosted by IGN). Featuring devs including Associate Producer Lani Blazier and Producer Brian Knox, this one is all about character customisation. The interviews are also interspersed with some impressive in-game footage and rather arty shots of their Seattle offices. The vidcast begins by going through the differences between PvP, PvE and PvPvE. Indeed the highlight has to be seeing Lani try to figure out the best pronunciation of PvPvE. There's also a rundown of the main classess and the sub-class choices you can pick upon Ascending. If you're looking for one word that sums up both the game and this vidcast, it would have to be 'uniqueness'. While none of the information will be new to people playing the beta or who have been following the game, it's great to see more of the people behind the game and their genuine passion for Atreia.Hit the jump to check out the video.

Aion: The Tower of Eternity is attracting quite a lot of attention and, hot on the heels of the next phase in the beta, NCsoft has released a new and exciting batch of screenshots. This time focusing on the second Mage subclass -- the Sorcerer -- the fourteen screenies show new mobs and locations, as well as both Asmodian and Elyos' Sorcerers. As usual, the screenshots also come with a little bit more info about the class:"The Sorcerer is a Daeva who follows the Star of Magic. They are able to freely wield the destructive power if the natural elements: Earth, Wind, Fire, and Water. A sorcerer is a scholar at heart, evident by the books and orbs they normally carry with them. However, these items can be dangerous weapons in their hands as they help to increase a Sorcerer's power."Check out our gallery below to see the new screenshots in all their shiny glory. %Gallery-69076%

  • NCsoft reveal Aion's Mage sub-class, the Spiritmaster

NCsoft have released a new batch of screenshots from Aion: The Tower of Eternity, this time showcasing the Mage subclass, the Spiritmaster. Now the Spiritmaster, as I'm sure you'll remember from the Ten Ton Hammer interview we mentioned last week with Associate Producer Lani 'Liv' Blazier, are able to summon elemental spirits to their aid in battle. This helps make up for the Spiritmaster's otherwise squishy nature. NCsoft have also released a series of screenshots of Asmodian Spiritmasters doing their thing with some fiery and icy companions, giving us a first proper look at higher level 'pets'. They have also provided an overview to tease the class:"Spiritmasters use the power of the Spirits to strike fear in the hearts of their enemies, and have the capability of harnessing fierce pets to turn the tide in combat. While they make deadly opponents in long-rage encounters, Spiritmasters lack the physical strength of other classes. The path of the Spiritmaster is one of the more testing paths to journey in Aion." Don't forget Closed Beta Test 4 takes place this weekend, until then take a look at our gallery below.%Gallery-67915%

  • NCsoft reveal Aion's Scout sub-classes, the Assassin and the Ranger

NCsoft has just revealed another batch of class-centric screenshots for must-play MMO Aion. This time they're focusing on the agile Scout, specifically the sub-classes of the Assassin and the Ranger. Perhaps the nicest thing is the fact that the screenshots include both Elyos and Asmodian Daeva, including the particularly angelic -- but slightly menacing -- one you see above.Assassins are, as their name suggests, crafty killers. Though physically squishy, they are, according to NCsoft, 'able to strike silently and with devastating consequences at vulnerable targets, effectively bringing down whole groups with a single action'. Perhaps the most interesting piece of lore suggests that Assassins have turned their backs on the deity known as Aion and instead 'follow the star of death for instruction'. Rangers, meanwhile, prefer to work alone or in teams, and possess 'finely honed survival instincts and the ability to endure even in the harshest of environments'. Weapons-wise, they use daggers, traps to snare their prey and are expert archers. You can check out the images of the Ranger and Assassin in our Scout gallery below.%Gallery-67600%

  • Aion: The Tower of Eternity - Details emerge on the Spiritmaster class

I have some good news for the non-Korean speaking foozles interested in NCsoft's upcoming Aion: The Tower of Eternity, due out late next year in NA/UK. Over the weekend new details emerged on the elusive Spiritmaster, one of the eight classes planned at release. The Spiritmaster will indeed be a summoning based magic class, but what makes it stand-out is it will derive its prowess from the elements of nature by summoning and controlling fierce creatures based on the elements of Earth, Fire, Wind, and Water. (A little cliché if you ask me, but isn't most Fantasy? What really matters is that the class is fun to play...) As for what roles are best suited for each elemental: Fire spirits specialize in ranged attacks; Earth spirits will master various defensive measures; Water spirits focus on healing and limiting damage; Wind spirits will focus on melee and slaying their opponents quick. For balance purposes, only one elemental may be actively summoned. It is said that certain encounters will call for a specific elemental to be used as to provide more reactionary and visceral gameplay. Aion: The Tower of Eternity is set to begin closed NA/UK beta-testing in early 2008. I embedded three Aion videos after the break that show the Spiritmaster's summoned Fire, Earth, and Water elementals. (In that order). %Gallery-11511%
