However, the first signs of Nokia's second wave may have just surfaced in WP Bench's testing leaderboards. The Nokia Alpha, Phi, PurePhi and PureLambda have all shown up at varying points in the chart; we've seen them for ourselves, although you'll need WP Bench on a Windows Phone to see them first-hand. Not much is visible without seeing the devices themselves, but the PureLambda appears to be running a build of OS 8.0 -- better known to most as <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/02/windows-phone-8-detailed/">Apollo</a>, or possibly Windows Phone 8. As long as these aren't elaborate pranks, they could represent entry, mid-tier and high-end phones; we're wondering if the Pure tag isn't a reference to the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/05/nokia-pureview-windows-phone-confirmed/">PureView-equipped Lumias</a> Nokia said were inevitable in the long run. No matter what the four phones turn out to be, any real devices will show us what Nokia can do with Microsoft's OS now that it's had time to strategize.</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/25/nokia-alpha-phi-purephi-and-purelambda-pop-up-in-benchmarks/">Nokia Alpha, Phi, PurePhi and PureLambda pop up in tests, bring Windows Phone 8 along for the ride</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 25 May 2012 03:43:00 EST. While the HTC-sourced phone itself hasn't been a secret, the build of Android on this particular specimen, obtained by <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Steven+Troughton-Smith/">Steven Troughton-Smith</a>, is something few eyes outside of Mountain View have seen. As Mr. Smith notes, this isn't the first public build of Android that was detailed in November 2007 (M3), but rather an earlier version from May of that same year. The non-touch UI is almost totally unlike what eventually shipped with the touch-friendly <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/07/htc-dream-gets-unlocked-bootloader-makes-someones-come-true/">HTC Dream</a>, aside from obviously housing Android's basic framework and apps including G Talk and the like. We won't spoil it for you, though, so hit up the source link below to see Smith's full walkthrough and analysis of the device that once served as the initial development vehicle for Android.</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/06/early-android-build-walkthrough-google-sooner-pre-m3/">Infant version of Android gets a walkthrough on Google's Sooner development phone</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sun, 06 May 2012 17:45:00 EST. In this instance, it just leaves us wanting more. The image you see above is RIM's official dev unit for its just launched <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/blackberry+10/">BlackBerry 10 platform</a>. If it looks familiar, that's because you've seen it not too long ago when <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/28/rim-blackberry-10-development-alpha-touchscreen-phone/">leaks of the much anticipated device</a> began to hit the world wide rumor-mongering web. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/rim">Waterloo's</a> still keeping us in the dark as to the glorified guts this austere fella's packing, but it did confirm these alpha units will feature a jaw-dropping 4.2-inch, 1280 x 768 display that bests the 720p panels found on other similarly-sized handsets -- there's no word yet on if it's PenTile, though it likely doesn't matter much at that resolution. We've also learned the device sports 16GB internal storage and 1GB of RAM. No, this isn't your mother's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/BlackBerry/">BlackBerry</a> and for good reason too, as the beleaguered mobile titan's got quite a bit of its continued prosperity riding on this QNX-based slab. Wondering where its QWERTY cousin is? We are too, but without any official announcements, you'll just have to stay tuned to see what fruits this week's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/BlackberryWorld/">BlackBerry World</a> will bear.</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/01/blackberry-10-dev-unit-unveiled-4-2-inch-screen-1280-x-7/">BlackBerry 10 dev alpha unit unveiled: 4.2-inch screen, 1280 x 768 resolution</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 01 May 2012 09:27:00 EST. This time around, you're looking at what's claimed as being one of Research In Motion's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/25/first-blackberry-10-device-targeted-for-october/">BlackBerry 10</a> "Development Alpha" devices that'll be handed out during next week's BlackBerry Jam -- just like the company <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/24/rim-putting-blackberry-10-test-units-in-developers-hands-in-may/">promised</a> a month ago. Images of the device first surfaced over at <em>CrackBerry's</em> forums and, as the site points out, the touchscreen candy bar seems to share its design DNA with the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/playbook/">PlayBook</a>. Keeping in mind that it's likely to remain a testing device for devs, don't bank on it ever hitting store shelves. That said, we're now curious how pivotal a role RIM's famous tactile keyboards will play on its next-generation phones -- if any. Head over to the source links below if you'd like to catch more photos from Mr. Blurrycam and extra information in the meantime.</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/28/rim-blackberry-10-development-alpha-touchscreen-phone/">Is this RIM's BlackBerry 10 development device?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sat, 28 Apr 2012 21:46:00 EST. It was just yesterday that a corner of Sony's 16.1 megapixel <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/27/first-image-of-sony-nex-f3-leaked-outs-16-1-mp-sensor/">NEX-F3</a> leaked onto the interwebs and now more photos have surfaced, along with a previously unannounced shooter, the Alpha A37 SLT. The pictures come courtesy of <em>Yang Canggih,</em> which says it had a chance to demo the two devices yesterday at Sony's Partner's Conference in Jakarta (curiously, the NEX-F3 post isn't live as of this writing, but <em>Sony Alpha Rumors</em> has the images up). Starting with the F3, the mirrorless camera has lost a smidgen of the curves found on its older sibling, the C3, adopting a slight bit of the angular edges that once made the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/06/sony-nex-7-review/">NEX-7</a> the <strike>badass</strike> standout in the lineup. You'll notice that the shutter button and grip have an uncanny <span>resemblance</span> to the 7's, not to mention that it's clearly gained a pop-up flash -- a first for the lower-end NEXs. Past that, the rumored -- and self-portrait friendly -- 180 degree tilt-screen is also present, which'll likely give the C3 an edge over its siblings when it comes to composing shots. Also worth note, some of the buttons on back have been slightly repositioned.</p><p> Moving along, those hoping for a successor to the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/08/sony-announces-nex-c3-and-alpha-a35-cameras-new-macro-lens/">A35</a> will apparently have their wish granted with the 16.1 megapixel A37. According to <em>Yang Canggih, </em>it features the articulating display from the last generation of NEX cams,<span><span> </span>Auto Portrait Framing (first introduced with the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/13/sony-alpha-a57-official/">A57</a>), four more effect modes than the A35 (up from 11)</span> and an ergonomic grip in the vein of the A77. Sadly, that's about all that's currently known, so hopefully we'll get an official introduction to the cameras soon. Head past the break for a shot of the A37 and then check out the links below for even more of both.</p><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/28/sony-alpha-a37-slt-nex-f3-ilc-cameras-leak/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sony's Alpha A37 and NEX-F3 pose for the camera, reveal more angles, details</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/28/sony-alpha-a37-slt-nex-f3-ilc-cameras-leak/">Sony's Alpha A37 and NEX-F3 pose for the camera, reveal more angles, details</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sat, 28 Apr 2012 21:03:00 EST. For those irked, you'll be pleased to know that the company has just updated both cameras to firmware version 1.05, claiming it'll "sharpen their responses." Specifically, you'll be noticing faster <strike>cold startups</strike> shutdowns, quicker response times from the front and rear dials and faster access to images in auto review. That's not all, however, as Sony has also added in-camera shading and chromatic aberration compensation for 11 of its A-mount lenses, which can translate to less time cooking your images in post. Last, but not least, the A77 gets an extra bonus for its autofocus system that improves its abilities in high-contrast environments, while the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/10/sony-500mm-f-4-g-ssm-lens-hands-on-video/">SAL500F40G 500mm F4 G SSM</a> super-telephoto lens will now focus faster with both shooters. Shutter finger already twitching? Don't delay, you'll find full details in the press release after the break and download information at the source link below. For $0.99, the new Image Input feature allows users to add filters, perform color processing and OCR recognition, detect features and view EXIF and histogram information of their photos. The Wolfram Alpha app itself will set you back $2.99, so if you've yet to hop aboard, you can expect to plunk down just shy of $4.00 for the app and its add-on -- no doubt a small price for true photo junkies.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/15/wolfram-alpha-adds-image-processing-for-ios/">Wolfram Alpha in-app purchase for iOS adds advanced image processing capabilities</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 15 Mar 2012 02:36:00 EST. This is an unofficial development branch and users have so far seen mixed results, but the main CyanogenMod crew seems content enough to recommend it -- at least until a new Alpha or Beta build comes along with major improvements like video playback or camera support. It's definitely healthier than holding your breath.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/17/cm9-for-touchpad-gains-access-to-nightly-builds/">CM9 for TouchPad gains access to nightly builds</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 17 Feb 2012 13:28:00 EST. We spotted the new A-mount telephoto mounted on an <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/24/sony-alpha-a77-hands-on-preview-video/">Alpha A77</a> at Sony's booth at <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/08/were-live-from-cp-2012-in-yokohama-japan/">CP+ 2012</a>, and queued up for a chance to take some shots. The lens focused surprisingly quickly, especially given its massive 500mm fixed focal length. Moving from subject to subject at varying distances, we were typically able to achieve focus in a fraction of a second. Long lenses have traditionally been tricky on the focus front, but this guy handled it like a champ, with speeds that appeared to rival far shorter primes. The SAL500F40G, as it's to be known, will be hand built to order beginning in March, with a yet-to-be-confirmed (likely sky-high) price tag. Click on past the break to see just how quickly we can zero in on some wild CP+ show floor action.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-500mm-f-4-g-ssm-lens-hands-on/">Sony 500mm f/4 G SSM lens hands-on</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-500mm-f-4-g-ssm-lens-hands-on/#4809106"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/02/sony500001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-500mm-f-4-g-ssm-lens-hands-on/#4809107"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/02/sony500002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-500mm-f-4-g-ssm-lens-hands-on/#4809108"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/02/sony500003_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-500mm-f-4-g-ssm-lens-hands-on/#4809109"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/02/sony500004_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-500mm-f-4-g-ssm-lens-hands-on/#4809111"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/02/sony500005_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/10/sony-500mm-f-4-g-ssm-lens-hands-on-video/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sony 500mm f/4 G SSM lens hands-on (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/10/sony-500mm-f-4-g-ssm-lens-hands-on-video/">Sony 500mm f/4 G SSM lens hands-on (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 10 Feb 2012 08:11:00 EST. Ever since a days-long shooting session <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/15/sony-alpha-nex-7-hands-on-preview-video/">back in September</a>, Sony's prized mirrorless cam has eluded us -- and the rest of the world. As you may recall, the flagship Alpha ILC was hit by the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/20/thailand-flooding-forces-sony-to-postpone-alpha-nex-7-release-c/">Thailand floods</a>, resulting in delay after delay, eventually missing the holiday shopping season entirely before resurfacing <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/24/sony-alpha-nex-7-emerges-from-the-waters-ready-for-action/">late last month</a>. Another week later and our beloved Sony Alpha NEX-7 has finally arrived, ready to take on the streets of New York City. So what exactly is the NEX-7, and why does it cost as much as a mid-range DSLR? First off, the 24.3-megapixel APS-C ILC captures, well, 24.3-megapixel images, offering the highest resolution of any mirrorless model on the market. Its APS-C sensor is identical to the one found in <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/24/sony-alpha-a77-hands-on-preview-video/">Sony's A77 DSLR</a>, measuring larger than Micro Four Thirds and on par with most full-size digital SLRs.<br /><br />If having the ability to capture mural-size images ranks fairly low on your digicam wish list, you may take comfort in some of the NEX-7's other features, such as its gorgeous and durable magnesium alloy body, built-in XGA OLED electronic viewfinder, 3-inch, 921k-dot articulating LCD and unique tri-navi control interface that enables direct access to key settings adjustments, including both aperture and shutter speed in manual mode. There's also 1080/60p HD movie capture with full manual control and microphone input support, a 10 frames-per-second continuous shooting mode (with exposure and focus locked) and a BIONZ image processor that's capable of delivering low-noise images all the way through ISO 16,000. These features combine to make the NEX-7 one of the most powerful mirrorless cameras to date, but are they enough to justify the $1,200 body-only price tag? Now, living on the bleeding edge will cause some discomfort when it comes to Market access, hardware accelerated video and using the slate's camera, but fixes are expected as the project continues on. Also fresh for this release is the full source code, if you'd like to truly roll your own edition of Ice Cream Sandwich -- if you're wondering, a triple boot webOS / CM7 / CM9 configuration is reportedly possible, but not recommended. <div>
	Not content to provide us with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/25/motorola-xoom-rooted-in-two-hours-flat-sinister-transforming-ex/">ClockworkMod Recovery</a> and other fine hacks, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Koush/">Koush</a> just made a free USB tethering app available for Android aptly called ClockworkMod Tether Alpha. While it's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/29/itether-app-skirts-atandt-tethering-plan-sets-up-shop-in-ios-app/">not the first app</a> to bypass paid tethering plans, it supports unrooted phones and works with Linux, Mac and Windows computers. Just enable USB debugging on your phone, download the appropriate installer for your desktop OS of choice, then connect both devices via USB and you're all set. The installation process creates a virtual network adapter on your computer and pushes a matching <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/APK/">APK</a> to your phone. A proxy is used to avoid detection by the carriers.<br />
	<br />
	We tested the app on a late-model <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/MacBookAir/">MacBook Air</a> running OS X Lion and an AT&amp;T-branded <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/21/samsung-captivate-glide-review/">Samsung Captivate Glide</a> -- along with a couple other handsets -- without much success (as documented in the screenshot above). Then again, based on the discussions following Koush's Google+ post (source link below), the app appears to work for many folks and continues being tweaked on an hourly basis. Clearly your mileage will vary, but let us know in the comments how it's working out if you've installed the app.</div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/03/clockworkmod-tether-serves-free-android-usb-tethering-no-root-r/">ClockworkMod Tether serves free Android USB tethering, no root required</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 03 Jan 2012 06:58:00 EST. January's right around the corner and with the promise of a new year comes the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/06/ics-based-cyanogenmod-9-its-on-track-but-not-for-everybody/">anticipated release of CM9</a>. So, to whet those <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/ROM">ROM-flashing</a> appetites, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/16/ice-cream-sandwich-based-cyanogenmod-9-in-the-works-slated-for/">CyanogenMod team's</a> made an alpha of its Trebuchet launcher available as an .apk and .zip file over on <em>XDA</em>, bringing with it the ability to customize the number of homescreens, resize widgets and sort the app drawer, amongst other planned features. As is the nature of Android's underbelly, you'll need to have your device rooted, as well as running 4.0.3 in order to take part. And if you do decide to take the plunge, remember this is far from the final build, so things are bound to get buggy. Check out the source below to preview the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/01/android-4-0-ice-cream-sandwich-review/">ICS</a> goods.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/28/cm9-launcher-available-in-alpha-rom-flashers-tweak-in-anticipat/">CM9 launcher available in alpha, ROM flashers tweak in anticipation</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 28 Dec 2011 00:50:00 EST. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/05/sony-ericsson-to-become-sony-in-mid-2012/">Sony <span style="text-decoration: line-through;">Ericsson</span></a> has a clear stance on the Android dev community: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/13/sony-ericssons-android-bootloader-unlocking-site-goes-live-mod/">one love</a>. In what is, apparently, a first for the company, an alpha ROM of its in-development <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/28/sony-ericsson-xperia-handsets-to-receive-ice-cream-sandwich-upg/">Ice Cream Sandwich port </a>is available for install across a trio of <em>unlocked</em> Xperia devices -- the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/06/sony-ericsson-xperia-arc-s-review/">arc S</a>, neo V and ray. But hold your horses on that download trigger finger, this early build is only for "advanced developers" and quite a few features, like Google apps, WiFi, Bluetooth, voice, FM radio and ANT+, simply aren't functional. In other words, don't depend on this as your daily driver, but do dive deep if you know what you're doing and want a peek at Google's soon-to-be ubiquitous <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/01/android-4-0-ice-cream-sandwich-review/">OS upgrade</a>. Head on over to the source below for the cautionary how-to and remember to flash at your own risk.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/15/ice-cream-sandwich-alpha-released-for-xperia-trio-is-sony-erics/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Ice Cream Sandwich alpha released for Xperia trio, is Sony Ericsson's '143' to the dev community (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/15/ice-cream-sandwich-alpha-released-for-xperia-trio-is-sony-erics/">Ice Cream Sandwich alpha released for Xperia trio, is Sony Ericsson's '143' to the dev community (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 15 Dec 2011 13:11:00 EST. The search engine, which recently began incorporating data from the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/FAA/">FAA</a> can now, with a five-minute delay from real-time data, use a flight's speed, heading and altitude to offer a projection of a plane's position. A search for 'flights overhead' via the Wolfram Alpha web site or app will use your location to pinpoint flights that should be visible to you. That string currently only works if the flight has at least one endpoint in the United States, so tracking international flights might be limited. Even so, this should allow you to look up flight delays, check when the next flight will be, see a cool interactive sky map and track a specific flight, of course. You'll have no valid excuse for being late to pick a friend up from the airport ever again.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/19/wolfram-alpha-search-engine-now-tracks-flight-paths-trajectory/">Wolfram Alpha search engine now tracks flight paths, trajectory information</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sat, 19 Nov 2011 08:56:00 EST. You're not really reading this. Okay, you <em>are</em> reading this, but the problem -- we're told -- is that you're reading it like a little <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/16/the-worlds-biggest-pac-man-game-takes-over-the-internet-your-l/">Pac-Man</a> trapped in a blind maze, in which all the other Pac-People surfing this page are hidden from view. Don't you want to smash those walls down? Don't you want to immerse yourself in that sweaty throng of humanity? Oh, you do? Then you need StormDriver, a social web app which has just started alpha testing. Similar to the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/rockmelt">RockMelt</a> browser that came out last year, it's an overlay that allows geeks on the same page to interact with each other, rate content and follow real-time feeds that point them towards hot sites and discussions. The video and press release after the break make it all sound very enticing, but remember the ancient phrase: never pull down a fence until you know why someone put it up.<br />

	Let the voice recognition battle begin! <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/04/apple-brings-siri-voice-control-to-iphone/">Siri's</a> already thrown the first punch in the soon-to-be dicey (albeit very consumer friendly) voice service wars, but don't count Google out just yet. The folks over at Mountain View are doing their best to strike back, adding extra functionality to the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/googletranslate">Google Translate app for Android</a>. So, what's new in this version 2.2 upgrade? The company's expanded the app's previously limited speech-to-speech repertoire with support for an additional 12 languages, accessible via the alpha-tagged <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/12/google-translate-for-android-turns-one-introduces-experimental/">Conversation Mode</a>. And to prevent you from any awkward (and potentially hilarious) moments of unintended translation, there's now a post-edit ability to keep those two-way foreign exchanges PG. Alright, so it's not quite the hands-free, HAL-like cyber assistant update we'd like it to be, but there's always <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/28/ice-cream-sandwich-gets-a-two-minute-tour-courtesy-of-a-lucky-e/">Ice Cream Sandwich</a> for that -- we hope. In the meantime, go ahead and hit up the source below to test out the experimental wares for yourself or check out a video demo of Conversation Mode after the break.</div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/13/google-translate-for-android-gets-v2-2-update-adds-more-languag/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Google Translate for Android gets v2.2 update, adds more language support for speech-to-speech</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/13/google-translate-for-android-gets-v2-2-update-adds-more-languag/">Google Translate for Android gets v2.2 update, adds more language support for speech-to-speech</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 13 Oct 2011 19:59:00 EST. If you've been dreaming of a world where Android apps are free to roam across your Windows desktop, you're in luck, because <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/05/bluestacks-offering-android-virtualization-within-windows-harmo/">BlueStacks</a> has just turned your reverie into reality. Today, the startup unveiled an alpha version of its App Player -- software that allows users to run a host of Android apps on Windows PCs, tablets or desktops, without requiring them to make modifications to their original OS. Available as a free download, this early test version comes pre-loaded with ten apps, and can support an extra 26, on top of that. BlueStacks' free Cloud Connect app, meanwhile, allows you to port third-party apps directly from your handset to your computer, though some games, including Angry Birds and Fruit Ninja, are prohibited. Those, it turns out, will be included under a paid version of the App Player, which BlueStacks hopes to launch at a later date. You can take the free software for a spin at the source link below, or meander past the break for a demo video, along with a pair of press releases.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/11/bluestacks-app-player-lets-you-run-android-apps-on-windows-pcs-o/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>BlueStacks App Player lets you run Android apps on Windows PCs or tablets (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/11/bluestacks-app-player-lets-you-run-android-apps-on-windows-pcs-o/">BlueStacks App Player lets you run Android apps on Windows PCs or tablets (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 11 Oct 2011 08:15:00 EST. It's been a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/09/sony-announces-a700-replacement-the-a77-will-ship-this-year/">long time</a> coming, but the patience has paid off with Sony's A77 finally getting its first pro review. Sure, the $1,400 cost of entry (body only) will weigh heavily on even the most enthusiastic cameraman conscious. But, what's a few hundred dollars when it comes to a camera that <em>Popular Photography</em> says has "radically changed the world of DSLRs"? It seems only the rival <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/07/canon-eos-7d-gets-high-marks-all-around/">Canon 7D</a> holds a candle to this would-be king, besting Sony's latest when it comes to noise and performance at higher ISOs. However, the A77 wins on its all-around charm, with a 24.3 megapixel Exmor APS-C sensor, articulated LCD screen, world-first OLED EVF and impressive video-shooting chops. Video-wise, that top dollar gets you a high-end performance of 60fps at 1920 x 1080 with the fast <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/24/sony-alpha-a55-and-a33-official-translucent-mirror-full-hd-vid/">phase-detection</a> auto-focus we've also seen on its predecessors, the Sony A55 and A33.<br />
<br />
<em>Popular Photography</em> does add a single caveat to the largely very positive conclusion: video enthusiasts should probably hold tight to see what Canon and Nikon counter with. Especially if you're in possession of multiple lenses. Aside from that, what's stopping you? Dig in to all the nitty-gritty details below, and we'd advise cutting down on those impulse eBay purchases -- this magnesium-alloyed beauty will certainly make a financial dent when it lands, if not a physical one.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/03/sony-a77-reviewed-a-24-3-megapixel-game-changer/">Sony A77 reviewed: A 24.3 megapixel game-changer?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 03 Oct 2011 13:18:00 EST. Looks like we weren't the only one afflicted by the Sony <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/24/sony-nex-5n-replaces-nex-5-adds-16-1-mp-sensor-25-600-max-iso/">NEX-5N</a> camera's annoying <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/16/sony-alpha-nex-5n-makes-clicking-sound-when-moved-renders-captu/">click problem</a>. In case you missed it, the camera displayed the disruptive tendency of producing an audible click loud enough to ruin any 1080/60p video if it was moved suddenly while shooting. Tonight Sony updated its support site to promise a "performance improvement" available to all owners under the camera's warranty that it claims reduces the sound. At the moment we don't have any more information on what's causing the sound or what the improvement entails, but owners can dial 888-868-7392 to get their units upgraded.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/23/sony-offers-adjustment-for-nex-5n-camera-to-reduce-clicking-so/">Sony offers 'adjustment' for NEX-5N camera to reduce clicking sound while recording video</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 23 Sep 2011 21:42:00 EST. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/16/sony-alpha-nex-5n-makes-clicking-sound-when-moved-renders-captu/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/09/2011-09-16-sony5nclick.jpg" style="border-width: 0px; border-style: solid; margin: 4px;" /></a></div>
We've spent a few <strong><em>click</em></strong> days shooting <strong><em>click</em></strong> with <strong><em>click</em></strong> Sony's new <strong><em>click</em></strong> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/24/sony-nex-5n-replaces-nex-5-adds-16-1-mp-sensor-25-600-max-iso/">NEX-5N</a> <strong><em>click</em></strong><strong><em> click </em></strong><strong><em>click</em></strong> and were very <strong><em>click</em></strong> impressed with its <strong><em>click</em></strong> still image performance <strong><em>click </em></strong><strong><em>click </em></strong>but <strong><em>click </em></strong>noticed some... Oh man, we've <em>gotta</em> hit Stop. As you can see, the camera suffers from a rather significant yet-to-be-diagnosed condition that outputs a mysterious clicking sound whenever you move it about. Since it's quite faint, this is little more than a minor nuisance when shooting stills, but when you go to playback video <strong><em>click</em></strong> it's impossible to ignore, rendering the audio component of your video virtually useless.<br />
<br />
We've been able to isolate the sound to the camera body itself, so it's completely independent of the lens and other accessories. We also happen to be testing a variety of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/15/sony-alpha-nex-7-hands-on-preview-video/">new Sony products </a>this week in San Diego, and had Sony reps on hand to acknowledge and confirm the issue, which seems to plague every NEX-5N that we've tried. This is still very fresh, so Sony doesn't have a fix or even a statement to issue, but because 1080/60p video is one of this camera's headline features, we're going to recommend holding off on your purchase until the company can confirm what's causing the issue. Jump past the break to hear it for yourself in our demo video.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update: </strong>To clarify our experience, we've only tested four cameras, all of which were likely manufactured at the same time. All four cameras presented the same clicking sound, but Sony is still investigating the issue, and has by no means implied yet that all NEX-5Ns are affected. We will of course share any updates as we receive them from Sony.<br />

There are some cameras that we would be willing to use in a bind, some that we wouldn't hesitate to shoot with, and a very select few that would motivate a cross-country journey, just for the chance to spend a few days behind the lens. Sony's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/24/sony-unveils-nex-7-24-3-mp-sensor-oled-viewfinder-1199-price/">Alpha NEX-7</a> falls within that incredibly unique final category -- in fact, we've done just that, flying from New York to San Diego to go hands-on with one of only a half-dozen pre-production samples to have landed on American soil. After seeing a very early NEX-7 prototype a few months ago, it didn't take much convincing to get us on a plane.<br />
<br />
Sony's 24.3 megapixel APS-C masterpiece represents a giant leap forward for the interchangeable lens market, theoretically capable of capturing images identical in quality to its much larger <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/24/sony-alpha-a77-hands-on-preview-video/">Alpha A77</a> counterpart, but in a body only slightly larger than the NEX-C3. Pair that image quality with an XGA OLED electronic viewfinder, a revamped tri-navi interface, standard hot-shoe, 1080 / 60p AVCHD video, microphone input, and a built-in flash, and you have one very worthy compact DSLR replacement. That said, the NEX-7 kit's $1,350 price tag is far more than many are willing to spend on a camera. But is that premium pricing justified? Jump past the break to find out.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-alpha-nex-7-hands-on-preview/">Sony Alpha NEX-7 Hands-On Preview</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-alpha-nex-7-hands-on-preview/#4450692"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/09/2011-09-15-dsc00055_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-alpha-nex-7-hands-on-preview/#4450693"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/09/2011-09-15-dsc00057_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-alpha-nex-7-hands-on-preview/#4450694"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/09/2011-09-15-dsc00059_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-alpha-nex-7-hands-on-preview/#4450695"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/09/2011-09-15-dsc00060_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-alpha-nex-7-hands-on-preview/#4450696"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/09/2011-09-15-dsc00062_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/15/sony-alpha-nex-7-hands-on-preview-video/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sony Alpha NEX-7 hands-on preview (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/15/sony-alpha-nex-7-hands-on-preview-video/">Sony Alpha NEX-7 hands-on preview (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 15 Sep 2011 12:00:00 EST. Sony is on a roll with some fairly incredible product unveilings this morning. The Alpha A65 is almost an afterthought when compared to today's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/24/sony-unveils-nex-7-24-3-mp-sensor-oled-viewfinder-1199-price/">NEX-7</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/24/sony-alpha-a77-hands-on-preview-video/">A77</a> announcements, but this $900 (body only) <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/DSLR/">DSLR</a> targets the vastly popular entry-level category, while still including a new OLED electronic viewfinder, 24.3 megapixel CMOS APS-C sensor, and 1080 / 60p AVCHD video capture. Many of the A77's other features made the cut as well, including Sony's Translucent Mirror Technology, an ISO range of 100-16,000, object tracking autofocus, and a high-speed shooting mode (though the pricier model can shoot 12 fps, compared to 10 fps on the A65). You will be missing out on the A77's nifty three-way tilt and swivel LCD, though the A65's display does support tilt. Also missing is a 19-point AF sensor (the A65's has 15 points), a secondary text LCD, and support for an optional vertical grip. Jump past the break for a brief video walkthrough from Sony, along with a sneak peek at the A77.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-alpha-a65/">Sony Alpha A65</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-alpha-a65/#4385733"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-24-slt-a65cardslot-1200_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-alpha-a65/#4385734"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-24-slt-a65flashupwsal1855-1200_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-alpha-a65/#4385735"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-24-slt-a65front-1200_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-alpha-a65/#4385736"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-24-slt-a65leftside-1200_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-alpha-a65/#4385737"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-24-slt-a65rearvertical-1200_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/24/sony-announces-entry-level-a65-adds-yet-another-dslr-to-the-alp/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sony announces entry-level A65, adds yet another DSLR to the Alpha family</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/24/sony-announces-entry-level-a65-adds-yet-another-dslr-to-the-alp/">Sony announces entry-level A65, adds yet another DSLR to the Alpha family</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 24 Aug 2011 01:00:00 EST. When it comes to cameras, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/digital+slr/">digital SLRs</a> are a breed all their own. Many DSLR owners don't upgrade their bodies often -- if at all -- and even fewer would consider a switch to a competing camera system, especially after investing in a handful of high-end lenses. Manufacturers need to push innovation even further to target this segment of the market -- when some cameras cost thousands of dollars and already offer excellent performance, simply releasing a body with more megapixels and HD shooting options won't prompt photographers to pull out their credit cards. With its massive 24.3 megapixel sensor and high-res OLED electronic viewfinder, however, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/sony">Sony's</a> $1,399 Alpha A77 may just be the DSLR upgrade you've been waiting for. We spent a few days with a pre-production A77 paired with Sony's brand new 16-50mm f/2.8 lens ($1,999 in an A77 kit), and were very impressed with what will undoubtedly be a worthy successor to the well-received A700. Jump past the break for our initial impressions, along with plenty of still photo and HD video samples.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-alpha-a77-hands-on/">Sony Alpha A77 (hands-on)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-alpha-a77-hands-on/#4385083"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-24-img0456_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-alpha-a77-hands-on/#4385084"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-24-img0463_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-alpha-a77-hands-on/#4385085"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-24-img0466_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-alpha-a77-hands-on/#4385086"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-24-img0470_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-alpha-a77-hands-on/#4385087"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-24-img0474_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/24/sony-alpha-a77-hands-on-preview-video/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sony Alpha A77 hands-on preview (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/24/sony-alpha-a77-hands-on-preview-video/">Sony Alpha A77 hands-on preview (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 24 Aug 2011 01:00:00 EST. Without a doubt, today's biggest news on the NEX front is Sony's 24.3 megapixel <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/24/sony-unveils-nex-7-24-3-mp-sensor-oled-viewfinder-1199-price/">NEX-7</a>. But for photographers looking for a bit less power (and a lower $600 body-only price tag), the NEX-5N delivers some of the 7's headline features in a slimmed-down magnesium-alloy body. Sony boosted the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/16/sony-nex-5-preview/">NEX-5's</a> sensor from 14 to 16 megapixels in the N, also adding 1080 / 60p AVCHD video capture, a 10 fps continuous shooting mode, a touch-enabled 3-inch LCD, and a maximum sensitivity of ISO 25,600. The mid-range NEX cam also supports an optional XGA OLED electronic viewfinder, which attaches to its accessory port and carries a price tag of $350. We should note that although the accessory port appears to be similar to that used on the NEX-C3 and previous gen NEX-5, the OLED attachment is only compatible with the 5N. Want to know more? During our trip to Sony HQ <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/11/sony-nex-c3-hands-on-video/">earlier this summer</a> to check out the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/20/sony-alpha-nex-c3-review/">NEX-C3</a>, company reps hinted that the best was yet to come -- and held true to their word. Today's NEX-7 release breaks a handful of digicam records, becoming not only the first mirrorless camera to pack a 24.3 megapixel APS-C sensor, but the first APS-C cam of any shape and size to smash through this notable barrier -- potentially delivering unparalleled image quality for a camera of its size. Sony's new flagship mirrorless interchangeable lens camera (ILC) also features the same OLED viewfinder included with its brand-new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/24/sony-alpha-a77-hands-on-preview-video/">Alpha A77</a>, delivering XGA (1024 x 768-pixel) resolution directly to your eye. There's also 1080 / 60p AVCHD video capture, a full-size hot shoe, and a completely redesigned "Tri-Navi" interface. We spent a few minutes with a pre-production NEX-7 earlier this month -- jump past the break for our initial impressions.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-7-hands-on/">Sony Alpha NEX-7 (hands-on)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-7-hands-on/#4376643"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-11-2011-08-11-dsc08064_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-7-hands-on/#4376645"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-11-2011-08-11-dsc08065_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-7-hands-on/#4376646"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-11-2011-08-11-dsc08067_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-7-hands-on/#4376647"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-11-2011-08-11-dsc08070_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-7-hands-on/#4376648"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-11-2011-08-11-dsc08073_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/24/sony-unveils-nex-7-24-3-mp-sensor-oled-viewfinder-1199-price/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sony unveils NEX-7: 24.3 MP sensor, OLED viewfinder, $1199 price tag (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/24/sony-unveils-nex-7-24-3-mp-sensor-oled-viewfinder-1199-price/">Sony unveils NEX-7: 24.3 MP sensor, OLED viewfinder, $1199 price tag (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 24 Aug 2011 01:00:00 EST. <br />
Look away now if you're desperate for a beach holiday, because the above video features a Sony camera chilling out in the sand, before some lucky fella picks it up for a quick snap of the calm sea. Now, the clip doesn't actually indicate which model this camera is, but the video uploader -- with a fresh account hosting just this one video -- simply wrote "Sony Alpha <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/a77">A77</a>?" in the title, along with "Taiwan" in the description. Our gut feeling tells us that this leak comes straight out of Sony's Taiwanese PR team, who's keen to show off this mysterious camera's quick autofocus in live view mode (presumably there's a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Translucent+Mirror/">translucent mirror</a> inside to enable this), as well as its sand-friendly body. That said, the folks should really get that Zeiss lens inspected -- as pointed out by <em>Sony Alpha Rumors</em>, we seriously doubt it shares the same level of protection as the body. Poor thing.<br />
<br />
Focusing on the camera again: we only get to see its back, but this alone is enough to prove that we're looking at a never-before-seen model from Sony -- while it sports a similar swivel screen as the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/A55">A55's</a> (whereas the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/a560%2Ca580">A560 and A580</a> only have tilting screens), it also has a different set of buttons. In fact, said button layout is identical to that on the transparent prototype <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/08/sonys-see-through-alpha-dslr-gets-the-hands-on-treatment-proba/">manhandled by <em>Pocket-lint</em></a> back in March! Combining these factors together, we say this A77 teaser is pretty legit. Now, how about a date and some prices for this 24 megapixel beast, Sony?<br />
<br />
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]<br />

Sony may have yet to officially announce its upcoming <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/a77">Alpha A77</a> camera, but thanks to a nomination page ahead of this month's Good Design Expo, we can finally get a glimpse of what this imager will pack internally. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/22/sonys-a77-and-a65-spied-in-leaked-image-announcement-to-follow/">Indeed</a>, the A77 will come with a 24 megapixel Exmor CMOS sensor, along with a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/translucent+mirror/">translucent mirror</a> that enables full-time continuous autofocus. Additionally, with the help of its new BIONZ engine, we have a "world's fastest" burst rate of 12 frames per second, which goes nicely alongside the camera's 60p and 24p video recording modes (presumably in AVCHD). What also caught our eyes was this "world's first" XGA OLED electronic viewfinder, while the A55 and A35 come with just LCD versions. Well, only time will tell whether this camera lives up to expectations -- by the sound of it, we'll probably be able to play with one within a few weeks from now.<br />
<br />
[Thanks, pontsuku.]<br />

We've already seen a short bit of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/18/silver-tesla-model-s-alpha-hits-the-road-carves-some-corners-v/">footage</a> of a single <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/tesla,models">Model S</a> on the road, and now Tesla has released an even briefer video of not one, not two, but <em>three</em> vehicles on the track for some alpha-level testing. No, they're not racing (at least not on the video), but it certainly looks like they're ready for one. See for yourself after the break, and look for things to improve further from here -- Tesla says it's now already applying what it's learned from the testing to its forthcoming beta vehicles.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/04/gone-in-43-seconds-teslas-model-s-gets-teased-on-the-track-vi/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Gone in 43 seconds: Tesla's Model S gets teased on the track (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/04/gone-in-43-seconds-teslas-model-s-gets-teased-on-the-track-vi/">Gone in 43 seconds: Tesla's Model S gets teased on the track (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 04 Aug 2011 03:04:00 EST. Still waiting for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/22/sonys-a77-and-a65-spied-in-leaked-image-announcement-to-follow/">August</a>? Don't fret, the Sony rumor mills are still a churnin'. We begin with another official-looking leak of the oft-teased <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/a77">A77</a> -- this time accompanied by its bodacious portrait-assisting hand-grip. Joining the fray is a plethora of leaked pricing: 1,050&euro; (or about $1,500) for the body of the aforementioned shooter and 900&euro; (around $1,300) for its little brother the A65. Fancy something smaller? Okay, well hop after the break for a picture of the firm's upcoming NEX-7, and don't forget to peep the source links for the full monty.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/21/sonys-a77-continues-to-tease-brings-a65-and-nex-7-along-for-th/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sony's A77 continues to tease, brings A65 and NEX-7 along for the ride</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/21/sonys-a77-continues-to-tease-brings-a65-and-nex-7-along-for-th/">Sony's A77 continues to tease, brings A65 and NEX-7 along for the ride</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 21 Jul 2011 08:09:00 EST. But their enormous size and weight, lofty price tags, and intimidating design have forced casual photographers to focus on compact and superzoom point-and-shoot cameras instead, often leaving those bulky, confusing monstrosities to the pros. Enter mirrorless models, which scrap an optical viewfinder in favor of shrinking both body size and price tag, have provided the rest of us with a welcome mat to the world of powerful sensors, high-speed shooting, and swappable lenses -- with relatively little sacrifice along the way.<br /><br />The 16-megapixel <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/11/sony-nex-c3-hands-on-video/">Alpha NEX-C3</a> builds upon the successes of its predecessor -- the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/10/sonys-nex3-5-cameras-priced-june-release-date-leaked/">NEX-3</a> -- sporting a slimmer body and redesigned APS-C sensor. It also adds a reported 20-percent boost in battery life, improved low light performance, and a slimmer, more attractive design. We spent well over a month using the NEX-C3 as our primary camera for product shoots, trade shows, hands-on videos, and vacations, and were blown away by its performance as both a versatile still snapper and a powerful video camera. It's important to note that while the C3 does capture 720p video, it can't shoot in 1080p, so you'll need to look elsewhere if you need full HD. Like all mirrorless cameras, there's also no optical viewfinder, nor is there a traditional hot shoe. Instead, Sony included the same propriety connector found on the NEX-3 and NEX-5, enabling connectivity with a dedicated external microphone and a limited variety of external flashes, including the compact strobe that ships in the box. While some photographers may find the NEX-C3 inadequate for their needs, we absolutely loved shooting with it, and we think you will too. Jump past the break to see why.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-c3-review/">Sony NEX-C3 review</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-c3-review/#4305232"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/07/2011-07-20-dsc07756_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-c3-review/#4305233"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/07/2011-07-20-dsc07758_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-c3-review/#4305234"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/07/2011-07-20-dsc07761_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-c3-review/#4305235"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/07/2011-07-20-dsc07763_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-c3-review/#4305236"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/07/2011-07-20-dsc07767_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/20/sony-alpha-nex-c3-review/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sony Alpha NEX-C3 review</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/20/sony-alpha-nex-c3-review/">Sony Alpha NEX-C3 review</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 20 Jul 2011 08:00:00 EST. First shown <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/21/sony-advanced-model-alpha-a77-dslr-emerges-at-photokina-e/">nearly a year ago</a>, what appears to be a leaked official photo might finally mean the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/09/sony-announces-a700-replacement-the-a77-will-ship-this-year/">forever teased</a> A77 is finally on the horizon. If you'll recall, the high-end Alpha was sporting a svelte <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/08/sonys-see-through-alpha-dslr-gets-the-hands-on-treatment-proba/">see-through body</a>, and the only tidbits the Japanese firm would confirm were the 2011 ship date and that all forthcoming Alpha's would have <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/26/sony-indicates-all-future-alpha-models-will-include-translucent/">translucent mirrors</a> -- you know, the spiffy kind that enables DSLRs to focus <em>while</em> shooting video. Opportunely, the above pictured image also came with a bevy of specs, which we'll have to assume apply to the pricier A77: a 24 megapixel sensor, 11 point AF, 10 frame per second burst and an ISO of 102,400. Also on the docket is USB 3.0, and a ship date of October. Whether or not the August announcement pans out remains to be seen, but you'll certainly know when we do.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/22/sonys-a77-and-a65-spied-in-leaked-image-announcement-to-follow/">Sony's A77 and A65 spied in leaked image, announcement to follow?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 22 Jun 2011 23:12:00 EST. Sony announced the successor to its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/NEX3/">NEX-3</a> digital camera <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/08/sony-announces-nex-c3-and-alpha-a35-cameras-new-macro-lens/">earlier this week</a>, so we decided to take a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/e3+2011">post-E3</a> road trip down to the electronics maker's US headquarters in San Diego to check out the $599 NEX-C3 for ourselves. We'll analyze the new sensor's image quality in a full review before the camera hits stores later this summer, but from our initial impressions, the new cam appears to offer fairly minor tweaks compared to its predecessor. It's incredibly small for a camera with an APS-C sensor -- perhaps even awkwardly so, when paired with the comparatively massive 18-55mm kit lens or Sony's enormous <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-c3-hands-on/#4215321">18-200mm optic</a> -- but not small enough to be any less functional than the previous iteration. Like the NEX-3, the camera was designed to be held by resting the lens on your left palm, rather than by the grip, so size isn't likely to be an issue. Cosmetic changes include a magnesium alloy top panel, front microphone positioning, and a more efficient display hinge, which helped reduce the camera's thickness. We'll be posting a full review in several weeks, but jump past the break for more observations, and a hands-on video from Sony HQ, shot with the NEX-C3.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-c3-hands-on/">Sony NEX-C3 Hands-on</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-c3-hands-on/#4215304"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/2011-6-10-img1185_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-c3-hands-on/#4215305"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/2011-6-10-img1187_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-c3-hands-on/#4215306"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/2011-6-10-img1191_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-c3-hands-on/#4215307"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/2011-6-10-img1197_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-c3-hands-on/#4215308"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/2011-6-10-img1202_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/11/sony-nex-c3-hands-on-video/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sony NEX-C3 hands-on (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/11/sony-nex-c3-hands-on-video/">Sony NEX-C3 hands-on (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sat, 11 Jun 2011 13:00:00 EST. We've been (impatiently) waiting for Sony to update its NEX line of digital cameras since the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/NEX3/">NEX-3</a> was <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/24/sony-nex-3-discontinued-probably-has-nex-5-to-blame/">discontinued earlier this year</a>, and it looks like a worthy successor has finally been named. Announced today, the NEX-C3 appears identical to the model <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/22/sony-nex-3-successor-nex-c3-alpha-a35-images-leaked/">leaked in April</a>, and uses the same format APS-C image sensor as its predecessor, bumping resolution to 16.2 megapixels in a camera body smaller than the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/NEX5/">NEX-5</a>. Sony says the new entry-level cam is designed to fill the gap between point-and-shoot and DSLR cameras, and is the smallest body to pack an APS-C sensor, offering DSLR-level image quality -- the same 16.2 MP chip is also included in its new full-size Alpha A35, which replaces the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/A33/">A33</a>. Both cameras can shoot at up to 5.5 fps (the A35 adds a 7 fps mode at 8.4 megapixels), and include 3-inch LCDs, with the NEX keeping its hallmark tilt display, and the A35 adding Sony's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/TranslucentMirror/">Translucent Mirror</a> live-view mode, and an electronic viewfinder. We have plenty more to share, including a new lens and flash, along with pricing and availability for all, so jump past the break for the juicy details. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-c3-and-alpha-a35-gallery/">Sony NEX-C3 and Alpha A35 Gallery</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-c3-and-alpha-a35-gallery/#4188960"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/2011-06-08-sonycam9_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-c3-and-alpha-a35-gallery/#4188962"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/2011-06-08-sonycam11_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-c3-and-alpha-a35-gallery/#4188961"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/2011-06-08-sonycam10_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-c3-and-alpha-a35-gallery/#4188963"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/2011-06-08-sonycam12_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-c3-and-alpha-a35-gallery/#4188965"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/2011-06-08-sonycam14_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/08/sony-announces-nex-c3-and-alpha-a35-cameras-new-macro-lens/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sony announces NEX-C3 and Alpha A35 cameras, new macro lens</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/08/sony-announces-nex-c3-and-alpha-a35-cameras-new-macro-lens/">Sony announces NEX-C3 and Alpha A35 cameras, new macro lens</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 08 Jun 2011 00:00:00 EST. If you didn't jump on an <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/24/sony-alpha-a55-and-a33-official-translucent-mirror-full-hd-vid/">Alpha A33</a> when you had the chance, you'll probably be disappointed when your eyes glaze over the next few words -- Sony has discontinued production of the translucent mirror-packed shooter. On its site, the company has noted that production has halted in Japan, without specific reasoning as to why -- though some might say that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/29/sony-a55-a33-video-recording-limited-by-overheating-sensor/">overheating sensor</a> was just too much to bear. It's not often that a seven month-old DSLR gets canned, but if Sony's got a refined sensor waiting in a doubly refined successor... well, that'll put a plug in the waterworks real quick.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/03/sony-kills-a33-dslr-production-auctions-off-unused-birthday-cak/">Sony kills A33 DSLR production, auctions off unused birthday cake</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sun, 03 Apr 2011 05:15:00 EST. We've been teasing you with images of this see-through beauty since Sony <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/09/sony-announces-a700-replacement-the-a77-will-ship-this-year/">announced plans</a> to bring its translucent mirror to the A77. Unfortunately, we've still yet to get our dirty paws on its hard shell, but we're happy to live vicariously through <em>Pocket-lint's</em> hands-on of Sony's clear-bodied <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/sony+alpha">Alpha</a> camera. According to its post, the concept DSLR is based on a heretofore unidentified mid-range camera that touts an <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Exmor">Exmor</a> APS HD CMOS sensor and "fast continuous autofocus." The camera is slated for a late 2011 release, but chances are it won't come with that sweet transparent body. So soak it up while you can, because this could be the last you see of the crystalline casing -- hit the source link for even more eye candy.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/08/sonys-see-through-alpha-dslr-gets-the-hands-on-treatment-proba/">Sony's see-through Alpha DSLR gets the hands-on treatment, probably won't get a launch date</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 08 Mar 2011 03:49:00 EST. That satisfying clunk of the mirror swinging up and away, the rapid-fire clatter of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/dslr">DSLRs</a> going into burst mode, could be on its last legs. Well, for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/sony,alpha">Sony Alphas</a> at least. The company has confirmed that its translucent mirror tech, most recently confirmed to be coming to the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/09/sony-announces-a700-replacement-the-a77-will-ship-this-year/">A77</a> and earlier shown on the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/24/sony-alpha-a55-and-a33-official-translucent-mirror-full-hd-vid/">A55 and A33</a>, will be coming to the entire Alpha line. The sensor actually captures light through the mirror itself, which is just reflective enough to allow for real-time focusing even while capturing video. It's something of a bold move in the generally stoic DSLR market, and only time will tell whether it helps to boost Sony's street cred up to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/canon">Canon</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/nikon">Nikon</a> levels.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/26/sony-indicates-all-future-alpha-models-will-include-translucent/">Sony indicates all future Alpha models will include translucent mirrors</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sat, 26 Feb 2011 02:53:00 EST. We've been hearing rumors about a mystical, magical <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/sony,a700">A700</a> replacement <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/21/sony-advanced-model-alpha-a77-dslr-emerges-at-photokina-e/">since last year</a>, and now Sony's gone ahead and made things more official. The teaser image shows a transparent case, but the bigger news here is the transparent mirror, the same as found last year on the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/24/sony-alpha-a55-and-a33-official-translucent-mirror-full-hd-vid/">A55 and A33</a>. This allows for advanced, real-time autofocus while capturing stills or HD video. Behind that mirror will be an Exmor CMOS sensor and, while Sony isn't saying how many pixels it'll be packing, expectations are that it will fall in the 20 megapixel range. Sony has also announced a new battery grip and a new flash for the camera though details are slim on those as well. All are slated to ship "later this year," giving you plenty of time to make room in your camera bag -- and maybe your budget.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/09/sony-announces-a700-replacement-the-a77-will-ship-this-year/">Sony announces A700 replacement, the A77, will ship this year</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 09 Feb 2011 09:34:00 EST. We've seen it <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/06/tesla-model-s-is-bundled-up-at-ces-we-unwrap-it-video/">inside and out</a>. We've <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/10/tesla-model-s-takes-off-its-clothes-shows-us-its-motor/">seen it naked</a>. Now we're seeing it do its thing. Tesla has just released a tasty video of the Alpha version of the Model S carving some corners, and while this isn't the first time we've seen the car in motion this is the best taste of the Alpha we've yet been given. Check out the video after the break and, no, your speakers aren't broken, it is that quiet. Oh, and if you'd like to know more about what's going on under all that chrome and silver make sure you peruse our <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/12/tesla-chief-engineer-peter-rawlinson-geeks-out-with-us-about-mod/">chat with Chief Engineer Peter Rawlinson</a>.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/18/silver-tesla-model-s-alpha-hits-the-road-carves-some-corners-v/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Silver Tesla Model S Alpha hits the road, carves some corners (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/18/silver-tesla-model-s-alpha-hits-the-road-carves-some-corners-v/">Silver Tesla Model S Alpha hits the road, carves some corners (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 18 Jan 2011 17:34:00 EST.
