If Minicore Studios' newly released The Sun At Night proves anything, it's that no one can keep a good dog down, not even megalomaniacal mustache aficionado Joseph Stalin. The game's star, Laika, was an adorable pup shot into space aboard the Soviet Sputnik 2 rocket in 1957. Unfortunately, at the time the Soviets hadn't mastered the reentry process so little Laika was doomed to perish in geocentric orbit. While our reality's version of events is a gloomy glimpse at Soviet science worthy of a Sarah McLachlan commercial, The Sun At Night presents an alternate history where Laika instead picks up an arsenal and proceeds to dismantle Stalin's forces with the tenacity of a scorned pooch. Minicore Studios describes The Sun At Night as a "2D action platformer," but as you can see from the above launch trailer that description is a bit lacking. The Sun At Night clearly draws inspiration from the highlights of its genre, including Metroid and Contra, while mating these well-worn ideas with modern technological and aesthetic accoutrements. More information on The Sun At Night can be found at Minicore Studios' official site, or you can purchase the game by visiting this page and dropping $15 into the developer's coffers.

While RIFT's patch 1.4 has been on the test servers for a couple weeks now, we've finally received concrete details about Trion Worlds' latest update to this dynamic MMO. Titled "Legacy of the Fallen," 1.4 follows up the recent world event with a new epic quest line and a 10-man instance revolving around the continued threat of the Abyssal. The epic chain, called the Water Saga, not only reveals the truth about the origins of the Abyssal cult, but gives players an opportunity to score high-end loot and a special crocnard mount. Those looking for more group-oriented activities may want to check out the Drowned Halls, a 10-person sliver that presents an alternate view of history where the Abyssal have conquered Telara. Patch 1.4 has plenty of PvP action as well, including PvP rifts and alternative forms of warfronts. There are plenty of other goodies in store from the RIFT team, including quest item storage, the LFG tool expanding cross-server, and several new crafting options. Currently, there is no date for the patch.

  • What if...? Ten canceled MMOs that could've changed history

What if...? Some of the most intriguing questions known to mankind start with those two words, as well as the most maddening. What if...? An entire genre known as "alternate history" is derived from these questions, with scholars and average blokes alike speculating on what might have happened if things went just a little differently. What if Hitler got the bomb first? What if Microsoft developed the iPod instead of Apple? What if Abraham Lincoln decided to see a different play that night? When it comes to MMORPGs, what if's can drive one up the wall. In this volatile genre, more projects have started, canceled, launched, struggled, faded and morphed into new creations than most of us know. Today, we want to look at 10 MMOs that were axed before their launch, 10 MMOs that could've changed gaming history as we know it... if only they got the chance to prove themselves. Let's take a journey, you and I, through history itself, and ponder the greatest of questions: How would the MMO industry be different if these titles had made it to release? • Stalin to save Mother Russia from aliens in new RTS

The second World War has fueled a nearly uncountable sea of video game titles, but while most have drawn inspiration from the same handful of historic events, none yet have captured the reality that was Joseph Stalin. But reality is boring, which is why we're much more interested in a new RTS by a trio of Russian devs (Wing Foundation, Dreamlore, and N-game) that takes an alternate history stab by pitting the Soviet leader's Red Army against an invasion from outer space. Wait...what?The brilliantly titled Stalin Vs. Martians is billed as a simplified game designed "for anyone who just hates the strategy genre," with fun and action taking top billing over the kind of micromanagement that's normally the genre's calling card. Says the game's website: "The only resources you can find on the map are power-ups. They look like they should: like shiny rotating coins of bright colors." The devs even state that Stalin himself will be a playable unit in the later stages of the game, as he lumbers on the field as "a huge colossus, five times higher than any other creature. Just like it was in the real life." We can all look forward to driving the extra terrestrials out of Holy Mother Russia when the game ships for the PC this fall.%Gallery-21612%
