The Motorola Titanium has certainly made itself no stranger to us, as it was officially announced by Sprint all the way <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/05/motorola-intros-dualing-portrait-qwerty-android-options-for-spri/">back in May</a>. At the time, no pricing or availability dates were known, so we were left to speculation and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/07/motorola-titanium-coming-to-sprint-on-july-24th-for-149-still/">leaked screenshots</a> -- you know, the usual routine for new devices. We needn't wait any longer for the prized 411, though, as the Now Network has announced the <a href="http://mobile.engadget.com/tag/milspec/">810G military-spec</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Eclair/">Eclair</a> smartphone will land on store shelves on July 24th and ding our wallets a Benjamin and a half -- after a $100 rebate, that is. Of course, this particular device may not be for everyone, but we know it could be appealing for those of you who just enjoy tossing the ol' Android around a few times too many.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/18/its-official-motorola-titanium-coming-to-sprint-july-24th-mil/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>It's official: Motorola Titanium coming to Sprint July 24th, mil-spec Eclair can be yours for $150</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/18/its-official-motorola-titanium-coming-to-sprint-july-24th-mil/">It's official: Motorola Titanium coming to Sprint July 24th, mil-spec Eclair can be yours for $150</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 18 Jul 2011 14:31:00 EST. It took 'em long enough, but it seems as if The Now Network has managed to snap up Motorola's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/DroidPro/">Droid Pro</a>... just seven months after Verizon Wireless <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/05/motorola-and-verizons-crazy-portrait-droid-pro-unveiled/">did so.</a> For whatever reason, Sprint's dubbing its version the XPRT, with the same 3.1-inch HVGA touchpanel, full QWERTY keyboard, 1GHz CPU and Android 2.2 loaded. It'll go for $129.99 on a two-year contract starting June 5th, but giving that the Pro <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/05/droid-pro-dropped-to-50-on-contract-by-best-buy-mobile/">hit the bargain bin</a> long ago, we're having a hard time believing anyone will pony up for Sprint's iteration. Moving right along, the Titanium gets off on the wrong foot by shipping with Android 2.1, and while it's hailed as the first iDEN device to combine Nextel Direct Connect and Eclair, the <a href="http://mobile.engadget.com/2011/04/22/rugged-android-powered-casio-gzone-commando-coming-to-verizon/">G'zOne Commando</a> has somehow managed to show its brawn while stepping up to v2.2. For those interested nonetheless, there's a 3.1-inch touchscreen and a chassis that's built to MIL-SPEC 810G for dust, shock, vibration, low pressure, solar radiation, high temperature and low temperature. She's unpriced for the moment, but the full release can be found just after the break.<br />

Look: we've seen enough <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/02/htc-magic-t-mobile-g1-gets-honeycomb-port-android-past-and-fu/">Honeycomb ports to the G1</a> to know that even the jankiest Android hardware can be kept current -- manufacturers just need to want to do it badly enough. In Motorola's case, it seems they don't want it very badly -- at least, not in the case of the quirky <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Flipout/">Flipout</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/motorola,charm">Charm</a>. Just as the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/03/cliq-xt-wont-get-android-2-1-upgrade-motorolas-word-as-good-a/">CLIQ XT got stuck on 1.5</a>, the two diminutive QWERTY models are going to be topping out with the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/android2.1">Android 2.1</a> that they've got now; <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Froyo/">Froyo</a> upgrades aren't in the works, according to Moto's official software update page. We're sure that the decision whether to invest the time, energy, and money into an update for a particular model comes down to the number of customers affected; neither of these devices <em>seem</em> to be blockbusters for their respective carriers, so that could explain it. Not much consolation to owners, though, is it?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/07/motorola-charm-and-flipout-follow-cliq-xts-lead-get-stuck-in-t/">Motorola Charm and Flipout follow CLIQ XT's lead, get stuck in the past</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 07 Mar 2011 12:25:00 EST. In a statement released this morning, the company said that despite months of rigorous testing, the phone will remain on Android 1.5. We first heard <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/27/motorola-charm-coming-to-t-mobile-with-enhanced-android-2-1-mo/">promises of an update</a> in June last year, but Motorola <a href="http://mobile.engadget.com/2010/06/30/motorola-pushes-back-android-2-1-update-for-cliq-cliq-xt/">quickly reneged</a>. In November, its predecessor got an <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/09/motorola-cliq-gets-android-2-1-at-long-last/">upgrade</a>, but the CLIQ XT was left hanging. Then in December, the company announced a <a href="http://mobile.engadget.com/2010/12/29/motorolas-android-2-1-update-for-cliq-xt-delayed-again-require/">delay</a>, citing "additional testing," and when those tests failed to bear fruit, it just plain gave up. Now CLIQ XT users are stuck with a phone indefinitely sporting an OS that's three steps behind the most up-to-date competition, and unfortunately, that's all she wrote -- Motorola shows no signs of pursuing another upgrade anytime soon. And that, friends, is your cue to pick up a handset <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/13/verizon-wireless-and-htc-most-eager-to-provide-android-2-2-updat/">made by HTC and situated on Verizon Wireless</a>.</div>

The Android landscape's certainly getting crowded, isn't it? We can still vividly remember the days when the <a href="http://mobile.engadget.com/tag/g1">T-Mobile G1</a> was the only game in town, and now here we are -- just two years later -- flush with options covering virtually every market segment from the ultra-high end to the ultra-low and everything in between. One niche market that's usually underserved, though, is the beat-the-crap-out-of-your-phone market. You know who you are: you work hard, you play hard, or you've just got an incurable case of butterfingers -- but whatever the case, you need a phone that you aren't breaking, bricking, melting, freezing, or otherwise destroying every few weeks.<br />
<br />
It's not that rugged phones haven't existed, of course. Far from it: Nextel and Motorola practically invented (and thrived off of) the concept, and options like AT&amp;T's <a href="http://mobile.engadget.com/2008/09/15/samsung-a837-rugby-bows-on-atandt-looking-for-a-fight/">Samsung Rugby</a> and Verizon's <a href="http://mobile.engadget.com/tag/verizon,gzone">Casio G'zOne</a> series have been available for some time. By and large, though, it's been a field devoid of smartphones -- and these days, that's just not going to cut it. The kinds of people that need a phone that can take a few knocks don't necessarily want to buy them at the expense of power or capability anymore. On that note, Motorola's new Android-powered <a href="http://mobile.engadget.com/tag/defy,motorola">Defy</a> for T-Mobile USA (and other carriers abroad) is one of the few to take a shot at elegantly combining environmental resistance with a no-compromise smartphone experience, featuring <a href="http://mobile.engadget.com/tag/motorola,blur">Blur</a> atop Android 2.1 with a 5 megapixel autofocus cam, LED flash, 800MHz TI OMAP3610 core, and a 3.7-inch 854 x 480 display. In other words, on paper, it's no slouch -- but can it hang? Let's find out.<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">Not much of a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/01/verizon-nabs-samsung-continuum-zeal-and-motorola-citrus-on-nove/">surprise</a> at this point, but Verizon has now confirmed that it will be launching the Android-based <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/citrus">Motorola Citrus</a> tomorrow, November 11th, and that it will be offering it for just $50 on the usual two-year contract (after a $100 mail-in rebate). Of course, that still doesn't make it the <a href="http://mobile.engadget.com/2010/11/04/t-mobile-comet-review/">cheapest Android handset around</a>, and that low-end price comes with some specs to match, including a sluggish <span name="intelliTxt" id="intelliTxt">528MHz Qualcomm MSM7225 processor, a low-res 3-inch screen, and just Android 2.1 with some Blur customizations. Full press release is after the break.<br />

Timeline (the condensed version): Google launches Android 2.1 on <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/05/android-2-1-gets-real-on-the-wings-of-the-nexus-one/">January 5th</a>, Motorola promises to eventually offer 2.1 for all its Android handsets (including the heavily skinned CLIQ) on <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/06/motorola-backflip-now-official-launching-in-us-first-quarter/">January 6th</a>, Google's Nexus One gets 2.1 on <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/11/android-2-1-sdk-now-available-nexus-one-says-geez-finally/">January 11th</a>. We wait. Motorola CLIQ gets 2.1 today, a mere 11 months later. Sure, maybe we were young and naive, but who could've known then that this update would be so long coming? Nobody really knows the solution to this problem in a general sense, especially since vanilla Android seems to be off the table for the majority of phones. What could compel a handset manufacturer and a carrier to work up timely software updates on heftily-skinned handsets past their shelf life, potentially competing with their own newer handsets in the process? Maybe <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/08/editorial-should-your-next-mobile-os-update-cost-you/">paying for updates</a>? Real Genuine Tears of Desperation? You tell us. Anyway, congrats to the saintly CLIQ owners out there who have waited patiently for 2.1, and a grumble grumble thanks to Motorola for keeping its promise.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/09/motorola-cliq-gets-android-2-1-at-long-last/">Motorola CLIQ gets Android 2.1 at long last</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 09 Nov 2010 12:38:00 EST. It's been a long road, but users of AT&amp;T's rather bizarre Motorola <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Backflip/">Backflip</a> will finally be seeing upgrades to Android 2.1 -- upgrades that were originally promised in the first half of the year, then <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/13/motorola-backflip-now-scheduled-to-get-android-2-1-update-in-q3/">delayed to the third quarter</a>, then delayed once again. Enough with the bellyaching, though, eh? A thousand customers who volunteered to get the update early via Motorola's support forums should've started getting access to it today, while "all markets" will receive it on November 9th -- and interestingly, it'll only be available as an offline update (in other words, no over-the-air option here). The update process will take up to a whopping 40 minutes, so be sure to make yourself a quick bite to eat before you sit down to undertake this operation.<br />

T-Mobile USA's tweet pretty much says it all -- the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Defy/">Defy</a> is nigh -- and you'll be able to pick Motorola's ruggedized handset come November 3rd for a penny under $100 on-contract. It's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/01/motorola-defy-android-2-1-goes-rugged-with-water-dust-and-scra/">not the fastest handset on the block</a>, saddled as it is with both Blur and Android 2.1, but there's nothing quite like a handset that you can <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/29/dell-streaks-gorilla-glass-screen-torture-tested-for-your-amus/">stab with a pen</a> or <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/07/motorola-defy-defies-water-and-lives-happily-ever-after/">dunk in the drink</a> while it's still turned on.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/21/motorola-defy-makes-a-splash-on-t-mobile-this-november-3rd-for/">Motorola Defy makes a splash on T-Mobile this November 3rd for $99</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 21 Oct 2010 07:19:00 EST. Looking for a new Android form factor on AT&amp;T and don't mind a bit of BLUR? <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/05/atandt-debuts-trio-of-motorola-android-phones-bravo-flipout-and/">Motorola's got you covered,</a> with the mid-range Bravo, low-end Flipside and budget Flipout you see immediately above. We spotted the trio of Android 2.1 devices at CTIA 2010 and had to give them a try, and though none really impressed they've got some interesting designs. You won't hear us clapping for the $129 Bravo, as it's basically a pared-down <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Defy/">Defy</a> -- the same 3.7-inch WVGA slatephone, but with a fixed-focus three megapixel camera and without the ruggedized outsides. <br />
<br />
Meanwhile, surfers, skaters and virtual keyboard haters could possibly enjoy the $80 Flipout and $100 Flipside. The former's got the same sort of irresistible, pocketable style that made Nintendo's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/17/video-gba-sp-gets-touchscreen-hack-turns-concept-into-reality/">Game Boy Advance SP</a> an instant hit half a decade back, arguably even more so than <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/23/nokia-twist-for-verizon-hands-on/">its inspiration</a>, though as you'd imagine the 2.8-inch QVGA screen and other <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/07/motorola-charm-official-for-t-mobile-portrait-qwerty-android-at/">Charm</a> features leave much to be desired. It's a painfully slow, low-res experience for those used to serious smartphones. Though the Flipside throws in a decent landscape keyboard and an HVGA screen, they don't help much when it's got the exact same silicon and yet another iffy three megapixel shooter inside. Still, the wonderful thing about the internet is that you can look before you buy, so feast your eyes in galleries below and videos after the break! <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-bravo-hands-on-0/">Motorola Bravo, hands-on</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-bravo-hands-on-0/#3448394"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/mobile.engadget.com/media/2010/10/10-7-10-bravo800001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-bravo-hands-on-0/#3448395"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/mobile.engadget.com/media/2010/10/10-7-10-bravo800002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-bravo-hands-on-0/#3448397"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/mobile.engadget.com/media/2010/10/10-7-10-bravo800003_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-bravo-hands-on-0/#3448398"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/mobile.engadget.com/media/2010/10/10-7-10-bravo800004_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-bravo-hands-on-0/#3448399"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/mobile.engadget.com/media/2010/10/10-7-10-bravo800005_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-flipout-hands-on-2/">Motorola Flipout, hands-on</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-flipout-hands-on-2/#3448455"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/mobile.engadget.com/media/2010/10/10-7-10-flipout800001-1286509595_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-flipout-hands-on-2/#3448456"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/mobile.engadget.com/media/2010/10/10-7-10-flipout800002-1286509598_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-flipout-hands-on-2/#3448458"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/mobile.engadget.com/media/2010/10/10-7-10-flipout800003-1286509601_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-flipout-hands-on-2/#3448459"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/mobile.engadget.com/media/2010/10/10-7-10-flipout800004-1286509603_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-flipout-hands-on-2/#3448460"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/mobile.engadget.com/media/2010/10/10-7-10-flipout800005-1286509606_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-flipside-hands-on-0/">Motorola Flipside, hands-on</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-flipside-hands-on-0/#3448479"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/mobile.engadget.com/media/2010/10/10-7-10-flipside800001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-flipside-hands-on-0/#3448480"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/mobile.engadget.com/media/2010/10/10-7-10-flipside800002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-flipside-hands-on-0/#3448481"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/mobile.engadget.com/media/2010/10/10-7-10-flipside800003_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-flipside-hands-on-0/#3448482"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/mobile.engadget.com/media/2010/10/10-7-10-flipside800004_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-flipside-hands-on-0/#3448483"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/mobile.engadget.com/media/2010/10/10-7-10-flipside800005_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />

Boy, Motorola must've been real busy lately. Sharing the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/verizon">Verizon</a> limelight with the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/05/motorola-and-verizons-crazy-portrait-droid-pro-unveiled/">Droid Pro</a> today is this new entry-level Citrus candybar, which is actually the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/10/exclusive-motorola-wx445-leaked-offers-low-end-android-for-ver/">WX445</a> we saw exclusively back in July. Sadly, said handset will still be shipped with a slightly disappointing Android 2.1 OS and Blur skin, but hey, we did say it's entry level, right? The good folks over at <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/xda-developers"><em>xda-developers</em></a> will probably <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/froyo">Froyo</a>-lize the phone in no time, anyway. Not much else is known right now, but bear with us while we look out for more deets.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update:</strong> Okay, the press release is out -- check it after the break. The Citrus is hitting this quarter for an unannounced price (a low one, we'd presume), and one of its claims to fame is the fact that it's fashioned of 25 percent post-consumer recycled plastic and is both PVC and BFR free. Better yet, the phone's also given the <em>CarbonFree</em> certification by <em>Carbonfund.org</em> for its carbon-neutral status. Good on ya, Motorola.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/05/motorola-citrus-budget-candybar-outed-by-verizon-sports-androi/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Motorola Citrus budget candybar outed by Verizon, sports Android 2.1 and Blur</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/05/motorola-citrus-budget-candybar-outed-by-verizon-sports-androi/">Motorola Citrus budget candybar outed by Verizon, sports Android 2.1 and Blur</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 05 Oct 2010 19:40:00 EST. Remeber the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/19/motorolas-rugged-i1-finally-lands-on-sprint-july-25-for-150-on/">Motorola i1</a>? Moto has just added its second rugged(ish) Android handset in the 3.7-inch <a href="http://www.engadget.com/all/gorillaglass">Gorilla Glass</a>-fronted Defy. It's dust-, scratch-, impact-, and water-resistant. Matching up to the IP67 durability spec means it's expected to resist being submersed in up to a meter of water for up to half an hour -- making it a pretty awesome option for taking your Android to the beach, 854 x 480 is your screen resolution, backed up by an OMAP 3610 chip running at 800MHz (there had to be some tradeoffs, right?). Android 2.1 is another slight disappointment, we're not clear on why Froyo had to be left off the table, but at least Motorola has bundled <a href="http://www.engadget.com/all/swype">Swype</a> as the default input mechanism. Should be a boon for some, we suppose. The Defy is expected to launch across Europe in Q4 2010.<br />

Until now, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/milestone">Milestone</a> owners could do nothing but to envy <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/droid">Droid</a> users rocking the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/11/motorola-droid-android-2-2-froyo-ota-updates-are-go/">Froyo upgrade</a>; however, according to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/motorola">Motorola's</a> recently published timeline, the former device is now slated for the same dessert party in Europe and Korea in Q4 -- specifically, "beginning at the end of this year," which could well mean the majority of users won't get the update until 2011 (!). Meanwhile, said upgrade is still "under evaluation" for Canada, Latin America, Mexico and Asia-Pacific sans Korea.<br />
<br />
But here's the real heartbreaking news from the same chart: unlike their American counterparts, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/dext%2Cmotorola">Dext</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/backflip">Backflip</a> will <em>not</em> be getting an <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/eclair">Eclair</a> update in Europe, Latin American and Mexico, while Canada and Asia-Pacific still have a glimpse of hope. Sure, it's not like Motorola's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/15/motorola-publishes-schedule-of-android-upgrades-for-its-handsets/">earlier timeline</a> laid any concrete details for the European Dext, but there was definitely a date for the Latin America flavor. What concerns us the most is that back in January, Motorola did make a promise -- which has since been deleted but forever cached by Google -- to its European fans on Facebook: "[the] Dext will get the Android 2.1 upgrade as well." We have the full shameful statement after the break.<br />
<br />
In case you still care, other devices mentioned in the timeline include the US-only <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/devour">Devour</a> (no 2.1 update), <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/cliq+xt">Cliq XT</a> / <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/quench">Quench</a> (2.1 in late Q3 / early Q4; under evaluation for Canada and Asia-Pacific), <a href="http://www.engadget.com/product/droid-x">Droid X</a> (Froyo upgrade in late summer, which we <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/05/droid-x-update-to-android-2-2-coming-by-early-september/">knew</a>), <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/motoroi">Motoroi</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/titanium,motorola">Titanium</a> (2.2 in Q4 in Korea for both). If you're still mourning over the canned update for your Dext, let us remind you that there's no stopping you from updating your Android slider <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/22/motorola-cliq-dext-gets-leaked-android-2-1-update-not-pinch-t/">manually</a>; alternatively, there's no harm in sending <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Sanjay+Jha">Sanjay</a> a nice postcard, either.<br />

What is <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Motorola/">Motorola</a> Kobe? The device, also known by its model number <span>MB520, seems to be popping up on a couple of certification websites. <em>UPnP Forum</em> certified it on June 16, 2010 (listed as "Kobe ATT"), and additionally on July 8th the smartphone quietly got a thumbs up from the <em>WiFi Alliance</em> for single band (2.4GHz) 802.11b/g/n. Of course, an IEEE standard does not a phone make, and so we've been in touch with a trusted source who's provided us with specifications of the device, as well as screencaps of some benchmarks results and the all-important About Phone page.<br />
<br />
The Kobe is a slate-style smartphone currently featuring Android 2.1 with a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Motoblur/">Motoblur</a> skin reminiscent of Droid 2 / <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/DroidX/">Droid X</a>'s UI. We're told it has a 3.5-inch LCD with 480 x 854 resolution, a 800MHz TI OMAP processor (either 3440 or an underclocked 3630), PowerVR SGX 530 GPU, 512MB RAM, 2GB internal storage and a bundled 2GB microSD card, and a 3 megapixel camera (without flash). It currently comes loaded with Swype, Vlingo, and DNLA support.</span> We gotta say, camera notwithstanding, this sounds like a pretty appealing addition to AT&amp;T's growing Android lineup. In <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/03/telus-launching-north-americas-first-42mbps-dual-carrier-hspa/">another case</a> of Canadians <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/04/telus-brings-iptv-to-canadian-xbox-360s/">getting things</a> ahead of their southerly neighbors, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/03/motorola-flipout-preview/">Motorola Flipout</a> has made its journey across the Atlantic and settled on Rogers as its first North American carrier. 3-year contractual commitments will be greeted with a lowly C$30 charge for the phone, or if you can't bear the thought of being locked in for so long, you can buy the flipping thing outright for C$375. As a quick reminder, the Flipout runs on Google's Android 2.1 OS, but embellishes things a little with a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/02/motorola-flipout-official-android-2-1-meets-enhanced-motoblur/">freshened up</a> variety of the Motoblur UI. If that, together with the "hip to be square" form factor, sounds like your slice of pie, we suggest you head on over to the source link and put those Canadian Dollars to good use.<br />

Confirming our <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/30/motorola-sage-atandts-next-android-phone/">FCC-inspired</a> conjecture, here we have a gallery of pictures giving us a detailed look at Motorola's latest (though probably not greatest) Android handset. Just as we posited, this QWERTY slider is bound for AT&amp;T's airwaves and it comes with a Motoblur 2 skin, as seen most recently on the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/product/droid-x">Droid X</a>. We keep telling these manufacturers that bone stock Android and a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/all/froyo%2Cupgrade">rapid upgrade cycle</a> would be preferable but they don't listen. You'll have to make do with Android 2.1 when the Sage launches, which can't be too far off from now given that our tipster has had his test unit for a good month already.<br />

Don't know about you, but our poor Motorola <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/motorola%2Cdext">Dext</a> (or <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/motorola%2Ccliq">Cliq</a> as it's know in the Land of the Free) had been left gathering dust for some time as it got unbearably laggy, even after a few wipes. We only clung onto this Android 1.5 device in the hope that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/15/motorola-publishes-schedule-of-android-upgrades-for-its-handsets/">Motorola</a> or <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/08/t-mobile-roadmap-leaks-out-plenty-of-android-in-store/">T-Mobile</a> would stick to their update schedules. And boy we got lucky, as an anonymous leakster dropped off an allegedly official T-Mobile 2.1 ROM for said phone yesterday, which sounds about right when you think of the carrier's planned <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/08/t-mobile-roadmap-leaks-out-plenty-of-android-in-store/">August update</a>. Read on to find out how the new ROM's running on our Dext -- we've also got a hands-on video for you.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-cliq-dext-gets-leaked-android-2-1-update-and-it-works/">Motorola Cliq / Dext gets leaked Android 2.1 update, not pinch-to-zoom</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-cliq-dext-gets-leaked-android-2-1-update-and-it-works/#3194980"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/mobile.engadget.com/media/2010/07/motorolacliq212010-07-22_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-cliq-dext-gets-leaked-android-2-1-update-and-it-works/#3194967"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/mobile.engadget.com/media/2010/07/motorolacliq212010-07-22-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-cliq-dext-gets-leaked-android-2-1-update-and-it-works/#3194968"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/mobile.engadget.com/media/2010/07/motorolacliq212010-07-22-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-cliq-dext-gets-leaked-android-2-1-update-and-it-works/#3194969"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/mobile.engadget.com/media/2010/07/motorolacliq212010-07-22-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-cliq-dext-gets-leaked-android-2-1-update-and-it-works/#3194970"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/mobile.engadget.com/media/2010/07/motorolacliq212010-07-22-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/22/motorola-cliq-dext-gets-leaked-android-2-1-update-not-pinch-t/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Motorola Cliq / Dext gets leaked Android 2.1 update, not pinch-to-zoom (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/22/motorola-cliq-dext-gets-leaked-android-2-1-update-not-pinch-t/">Motorola Cliq / Dext gets leaked Android 2.1 update, not pinch-to-zoom (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 22 Jul 2010 10:31:00 EST. So this little number just rolled into our tips inbox -- and at a glance, it appears to be the anti-<a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/DroidX/">Droid X</a>, if that makes any sense. We're being told this is the Motorola WX445 for Verizon (street name unknown), featuring Android 2.1, a flash-less camera of unknown pixel count, a touchscreen ranging somewhere between 2.5 and 3 inches, and a pretty light 1170mAh battery on board. Our tipster tells us it runs Blur, though we imagine it's possible it runs the Blur-esque skin seen on the Droid X that doesn't actually make use of Moto's back end to do its deed. We're also told it's "not a very impressive phone" and resembles a keyboardless Pre Plus in the flesh "but cheaper looking," so needless to say, you're not going to be cross-shopping this against an <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/EVO4G/">EVO 4G</a>; if anything, we suppose it might make a decent <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Devour/">Devour</a> alternative. More on this one as we get it.<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">Oh China, you tease us with much love and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/kirf">KIRFness</a>, except this time it's actually a real phone -- or is it? Even the tipster of this <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/motorola">Motorola</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/xt502">XT502</a> says it's a bit "shanzhai," but at least we know it really <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/31/motorola-xt502-another-android-phone-for-north-america/">exists</a>. Leaving that thought aside, this <a href="http://www.engadget.com/product/android">Android</a> 2.1 phone rocks some mid-range features: 3.2-inch screen (no word on display type), trackball, touch function keys, physical call buttons, micro-USB port, microSD expansion, 1,230mAh battery, and five-megapixel camera with button and LED flash. That's all we're told for now, but there are more pics at the source link, if you so desire.<br />

The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/28/motorola-droid-official-on-verizon-199-on-contract-coming-nov/">original Droid</a> made a powerful statement. Actually, make that state<em>ments</em>, plural: for Motorola, it was the largest single affirmation that it was going all-in with Android (after having already released the far less memorable midrange <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/CLIQ/">CLIQ</a> on T-Mobile) and that it could play in the very highest rungs of the smartphone elite. For Verizon, the Droid was the carrier's very first Android device, period -- announced to great fanfare in collaboration with Eric Schmidt and crew -- serving as a pretty spectacular exit from the Windows Mobile / BlackBerry doldrums that the carrier's smartphone lineup had historically suffered. By almost any measure, the phone went on to serve its purpose; it let customers (and potential customers) know that Verizon could release a "cool" phone, and they responded. The Droid's an unqualified success. Today, Verizon's involvement in Android has never been greater, and Motorola -- by all appearances, anyway -- seems to be on its way back from the brink.<br />
<br />
Time stops for no phone, though, and we're now halfway through 2010. Motorola's success as a competitive phone manufacturer is ultimately going to depend not on its ability to produce a single hit, but to produce a never-ending string of hits, each better than the one before it. It's a tall order -- and that's exactly where the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/DroidX/">Droid X</a> comes into play. Featuring a 4.3-inch WVGA display, 8 megapixel camera with 720p video capture, a reworked user interface, and a significantly improved processor, this phone apes the first Droid in at least one critical aspect: its ability to immediately steal the spotlight from anything else in Verizon's lineup. Specs don't tell the whole story, though, so let's dig in and see what this beast is all about.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-droid-x-review/">Motorola Droid X review</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-droid-x-review/#3133133"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/droid-x-review-37_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-droid-x-review/#3133134"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/droid-x-review-38_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-droid-x-review/#3133135"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/droid-x-review-39_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-droid-x-review/#3133136"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/droid-x-review-40_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-droid-x-review/#3133107"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/droid-x-review-13_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/01/motorola-droid-x-review/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Motorola Droid X review</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/01/motorola-droid-x-review/">Motorola Droid X review</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 01 Jul 2010 12:40:00 EST. That's certainly a bummer, especially considering that the devices run Cupcake, which is -- at this point, anyway -- a truly ancient iteration of the platform that many modern, popular Android apps don't even support (Donut seems to be a pretty popular cut-off point). So, when is it coming now? Hard to say; all Moto's saying is that it'll happen "as soon as possible" and that it's going to "take more time on the release to optimize the experience in some key areas." <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/DroidX/">Droid X</a>, anyone?<br />

Usual rules apply -- we can't independently confirm this at the moment -- but a tipster has sent us what appears to be T-Mobile training materials for an upcoming Motoblur-infused candybar smartphone, the Motorola Charm. Only this <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Motoblur/">Motoblur</a> is allegedly powered by Android 2.1 and boasts the same scalable widgets as <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/23/motorola-droid-x-first-official-hands-on-and-unboxing/">we saw on Droid X</a>, in addition to improved Facebook / Twitter integration (hello, Like and Retweet) and the usual <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Eclair/">Eclair</a> refinements.As far as the hardware is concerned, there isn't much to glean from it at this point, aside from a textured QWERTY keyboard reminiscent of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Cliq/">CLIQ</a> and a "camera" button denoting some form of memory-capturing capabilities. Speaking of which, the materials mention that the enhanced Motoblur is heading to CLIQ and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/CliqXT/">CLIQ XT</a>. Let us bookend this entire post with another reminder that none of this is confirmed, but we do know more than a few T-Mobile users who would love to get their mitts on a candybar Android.<br />

It was inevitable, really, that a phone as <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/10/motorola-droid-2-fully-exposed/">widely</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/28/droid-2-keyboard-makes-a-qwerty-cameo/">leaked</a> as the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/17/droid-2-breaks-cover-once-again/">Droid 2</a> would end up caught on video. Doing the honors for us today are <em>Android and Me</em>, who've compared the new Droid to the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/30/motorola-droid-review/">classic variant</a>. Funnily enough, they didn't find too much deviation from Motorola, describing the two handsets as "virtually identical," with the major physical change being the replacement of the previous keyboard's navigation pad with arrow buttons. The front end's soft buttons have also changed to Moto's Blur options, but otherwise you're still looking at a 3.7-incher with a 5 megapixel imager. The big improvement seems to have been under the hood with a new 1GHz TI OMAP3630 processor and 512MB of RAM (PowerVR SGX530 graphics unit remains the same) driving the Droid 2 to some robust benchmark scores. Of course, we don't see the handset booted up in this hands-on video, so treat these specs and results as provisional until we hear from the official horse's mouth <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/15/motorola-verizon-announcing-next-generation-of-droid-on-june/">in a couple of days</a>.<br />

Not interested in <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/15/motorola-verizon-announcing-next-generation-of-droid-on-june/">waiting until the 23rd</a> for Verizon's big announcement? Don't worry, we've got you covered right now! The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/droidx">Motorola Droid X</a> has probably been one of the worst kept smartphone secrets in recent memory, but after spending two hours with the phone we sort of see why. In short, it's pretty awesome. Call it a superphone or a mega-smartphone, but the 4.3-inch handset is absolutely <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/15/motorola-verizon-announcing-next-generation-of-droid-on-june/">Verizon</a> / Motorola's answer to the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/product/htc-evo-4g-supersonic">HTC EVO 4G</a>, and makes the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/19/droid-incredible-review/">Droid Incredible</a> look like a bench warmer. What do we mean? We'll let you see for yourself just after the break in a breakdown of exactly what this phone is all about -- and in a video or three of it in action. Oh, and on your way down, make sure to feast your eyes on the gallery, too.<br />

The big-screened unicorn-of-a-smartphone is purportedly set for a July 19th launch on America's most subscribed-to carrier, with ads to start popping up on the 18th. We're expecting to hear something official out of VZW next week, but till then, we'd suggest talking your current Android phone down from that ledge. Motorola has just outed a Europe-bound Milestone <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/11/motorola-xt720-spreading-android-blur-to-south-korea/">XT720</a>, a handset intended to grab the attention of camera lovers with an 8 megapixel sensor, 720p / 24fps video and -- a first for Android handsets -- a xenon flash. Speaking of Android, this will come loaded up with version 2.1 when it launches later this month. Plans for 2.2 upgrades are, as usual, not yet formalized and not under discussion. Other specs include a 3.7-inch, 480 x 854 screen, a 550MHz ARM Cortex A8 CPU, and a promised 9 hours of talk time and 320 hours of standby time. It looks very much like Moto's selection of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/30/motorola-droid-review/">Droid</a>-esque handsets that have been prowling the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/12/08/motorola-mt710-bringing-its-droid-ish-good-looks-to-china-this-m/">Chinese market</a>, and it seems the company has enjoyed success with the keyboard-less form factor and is pushing it out to Europe. US release plans are also not being discussed -- it might happen and it might not, seems to us like it'll depend on the Euros' reaction. We're just getting to grips with the handset right now, and will furnish you with video of it as soon as we can.<br />
<br />
P.S. We're told this handset is closer to the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/15/motorola-motoroi-hands-on-with-video/">Motoroi</a> than anything else, Motorola describes them as sister devices. We also spotted a network update from Orange on the demo handset, implicating it as a possible carrier for the XT720 in the UK.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update:</strong> We've now got Motorola's full press release plus a promo video after the break, as well as some comparison pics between this new handset and the original Milestone in the second gallery below.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update 2:</strong> And we've just added our hands-on impressions and video, you know where to find them.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-milestone-xt720/">Motorola Milestone XT720 hands-on</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-milestone-xt720/#3049380"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/10x0607motomilext720097_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-milestone-xt720/#3049408"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/10x0607motomilext720125_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-milestone-xt720/#3049401"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/10x0607motomilext720118_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-milestone-xt720/#3049405"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/10x0607motomilext720122_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-milestone-xt720/#3049372"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/10x0607motomilext720092_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-milestone-xt720-compared-to-original-milestone-droid/">Motorola Milestone XT720 compared to original Milestone / Droid</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-milestone-xt720-compared-to-original-milestone-droid/#3049558"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/10x0607motocomp0q018_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-milestone-xt720-compared-to-original-milestone-droid/#3049559"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/10x0607motocomp0q019_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-milestone-xt720-compared-to-original-milestone-droid/#3049566"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/10x0607motocomp0q026_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-milestone-xt720-compared-to-original-milestone-droid/#3049549"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/10x0607motocomp0q009_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-milestone-xt720-compared-to-original-milestone-droid/#3049547"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/10x0607motocomp0q007_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/07/motorola-milestone-xt720-announced-8-megapixel-cam-720p-video/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Motorola Milestone XT720 announced: 8 megapixel cam, 720p video, and Droid heritage (update: video!)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/07/motorola-milestone-xt720-announced-8-megapixel-cam-720p-video/">Motorola Milestone XT720 announced: 8 megapixel cam, 720p video, and Droid heritage (update: video!)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 07 Jun 2010 04:00:00 EST. A four-row sliding QWERTY keyboard? Check. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/MetroPCS/">Metro PCS</a> splash screen? Check. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Motorola/">Motorola</a> insignia? You better believe it. The folks at <em>AndroidGuys</em> have obtained what very strongly appears to be Metro PCS' first Android phone, and along with a handful of pics there's some alleged specs, too. From the man (or woman) behind the curtain: a 600MHz processor, 3 megapixel camera, and Android 2.1 with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Motoblur/">Motoblur</a> dressing. An <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/EVO4G/">EVO 4G</a> combatant it is definitely not -- nor ever intended to be -- but we wouldn't be surprised if the price turned more than a few heads. Any indication of price, release date, or even official name is, however, still a mystery.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/06/metro-pcs-to-join-android-game-with-a-motorola-qwerty-slider/">Metro PCS to join Android game with a Motorola QWERTY slider</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sun, 06 Jun 2010 17:29:00 EST. We know you're excited -- the <a href="http://mobile.engadget.com/2009/09/23/nokia-twist-for-verizon-hands-on/">Nokia Twist</a> finally has a legitimate competitor in the square-shaped pseudo-smartphone space! Motorola snuck up on us with its Flipout <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/02/motorola-flipout-official-android-2-1-meets-enhanced-motoblur/">unveiling</a> yesterday, so today we diligently trudged along to its local offices to get properly acquainted with this new Android handset. Running version 2.1 (<a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/eclair">Eclair</a>) on a 600MHz processor might seem like a recipe for trouble, but it's the same Cortex A8 (TI OMAP 3410) as used in the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/30/motorola-droid-review/">Droid</a>, and our time with the little quadrangle revealed it could handle itself with aplomb. The Flipout also boasts a freshened up Motoblur implementation and 512MB of both RAM and ROM, but only 150MB for user storage -- time to bring on <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/21/android-2-2-froyo-everything-you-ever-wanted-to-know/">Froyo</a>, eh? With interchangeable back covers (two will come in the retail box) and that handbag-friendly form factor, the Flipout is unashamedly flirting with being a phone for style-conscious lady-geeks, but let's see if it doesn't appeal to gruff old types like us as well. Join us after the break for our full hands-on impressions.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-flip-hands-on/">Motorola Flipout hands-on</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-flip-hands-on/#3039792"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/10x0603motoflipout0439_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-flip-hands-on/#3039828"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/10x0603motoflipout0475_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-flip-hands-on/#3039803"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/10x0603motoflipout0449_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-flip-hands-on/#3039815"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/10x0603motoflipout0463_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-flip-hands-on/#3039840"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/10x0603motoflipout0489_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/03/motorola-flipout-preview/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Motorola Flipout preview</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/03/motorola-flipout-preview/">Motorola Flipout preview</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 03 Jun 2010 13:39:00 EST. Motorola's quirky <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/11/motorola-flipout-spotted-an-android-2-1-motoblur-device-with/">square-shaped</a> Android 2.1 creation has just become official, courtesy of the company's YouTube channel.The Flipout brings a 2.8-inch, 320 x 240 screen (<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/05/kin-one-and-two-review/">Kin</a> killer!), a 3 megapixel camera with "one-touch" uploads to Facebook, MySpace and photo-hosting sites, and a refreshed implementation of Motoblur, which now includes resizable widgets, feed filters, and push corporate email. We hear that last feature is a real must-have with the target audience of this device.Video of the Flipout can be found just after the break, and Euro readers can expect it imminently, as the listed Q2 2010 launch date basically means it'll be out by month's end. Wonder how they'll price a curious creature like this.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update:</strong> Our pals at <em>Recombu</em> got a <a href="http://recombu.com/news/motorola-flipout-hands-on_M11787-1.html">quick hands-on</a> with the Flipout, and... it's a square Android phone. Video after the break.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update 2:</strong> We've come across a more comprehensive <a href="http://developer.motorola.com/products/flipout/">spec sheet</a> on Moto's dev site, which lists AT&amp;T- and Rogers-compatible 3G bands, make of that what you will.<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">There's no word yet on when the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/motoroi/">Motorola Motoroi</a> will make it to T-Mobile (in the industry we call that "the T-Motoroiola rumor") but there has definitely been a good deal of chatter concerning this handset. The latest has Pocket-lint confirming a UK release with Moto itself. Offering similarities to Taipei's HSPA-lovin' <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/XT701/">XT701</a>, users in Ol' Blighty (and the rest of the UK) can look forward to an 8-megapixel camera (with a Xenon flash), support for 720p video, mini HDMI, and an unspecified processor boost. In addition, Android 2.1 is likely to be part of the deal. We have neither a timeline nor a price, and the veracity of this rumor is yet to be established (although it does seem like a no-brainer), but if this all goes down as Pocket-lint says it will you can color us Yanks mighty jealous.</div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/14/motorola-motoroi-getting-android-2-1-bound-for-uk/">Motorola Motoroi getting Android 2.1, bound for UK?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 14 May 2010 14:04:00 EST. Remember "<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/11/square-motorola-android-slider-leaks-out-causes-consternation/">Square Motorola Android slider</a>?" Ah, those were the days. The little twister's returned, this time with much greater clarity and a new name. Meet Flipout. According to <em>Gizmodo Brazil</em>, we're looking at Android 2.1 with a dash of Motoblur thrown into the mix, a 2.8-inch display, full QWERTY keyboard, 700MHz processor, 512MB ROM / 256MB RAM, GPS, and a 3.1 megapixel camera. The HSPA phone is expected in the states this June in at least three different colors -- black, green, and pink. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Backflip/">Backflip</a>, Flipout... one can only hope Motorola keeps the trend alive with a Soundgarden-themed solar phone, the Outshined.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/11/motorola-flipout-spotted-an-android-2-1-motoblur-device-with/">Motorola Flipout spotted: an Android 2.1 / Motoblur device with a twist</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 11 May 2010 01:33:00 EST. <div style="text-align: left;">Decide to go with Motorola's unconventional <a href="http://mobile.engadget.com/tag/backflip">Backflip</a> over an Android phone with a more traditional form factor? Then it looks like you'll have to wait a bit longer than most to get the Android 2.1 firmware update. According to a newly published timeline from Motorola itself, the Backflip is now scheduled to receive the update sometime in the third quarter of this year, compared to the second quarter for the CLIQ and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/30/verizon-to-start-android-2-1-updates-to-motorola-droid-owners-to/">now-ish</a> for the Droid -- the <a href="http://mobile.engadget.com/tag/devour">Devour</a> upgrade is apparently still "under evaluation." Of course, all of this can still change and, given Motorola's <a href="http://mobile.engadget.com/2010/01/28/motorola-cliq-briefly-gets-firmware-update-by-mistake-still-and/">past history</a> with Android updates, it probably will.<br />

We swear we've seen a Motorola phone that looks like this odd square thing before, but it's also possible we're crazy. Either way, it looks like Moto's working on a new Blur set running Android 2.1, and if you thought screen size and resolution issues differences were a big part of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/05/entelligence-will-android-fragmentation-destroy-the-platform/"> Android fragmentation</a> before, well, you ain't seen nothing yet. Oh, and as for the story that this pic came from a student who borrowed the phone from a friend whose dad works for Moto? We'd be more skeptical, except that's exactly how we've gotten other dead-on Moto leaks. So... yeah. Anyway, a square Moto slider running Blur. Does that do anything for anyone? No? As is pleasantly often the case with Android devices, it turns out there's already a quick, easy, nearly painless way to circumvent the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/30/verizon-to-start-android-2-1-updates-to-motorola-droid-owners-to/">phased rollout of Android 2.1 to Verizon's Droids</a> out in the field. Anyone who's already been through this will feel right at home with the process: grab the binary straight from Google (so you know it's legit, which is always nice), rename the file, transfer it to your microSD card, and reboot to the recovery mode screen. The rest is pretty self-evident, and when all is said and done, you'll have a Droid equipped with the very latest and greatest that Google has to offer. Let us know how it goes, y'hear?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/31/droid-mercifully-gets-a-manual-2-1-update-option/">Droid mercifully gets a manual 2.1 update option</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 31 Mar 2010 15:57:00 EST. Flippin' finally, right? Verizon Wireless put the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/16/verizon-posts-android-2-1-upgrade-details-for-droid/">long-awaited</a> Android 2.1 update <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/18/verizon-delays-android-2-1-rollout-to-motorola-droid-new-date-i/">on hold</a> for its cadre of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/30/motorola-droid-review/">Motorola Droid</a> owners earlier in the month, with an all-too-vague "TBD" as the only detail as to when we could look for it to actually, really land. We've just happened upon what <em>looks</em> to be an internal Verizon email that went out this morning, and sure enough, it sounds as if the update will at long last begin hitting Droid owners in just a few minutes. At noon on 3/30 (that's today, vaquero), a grand total of 1,000 users will receive notification of the update, while 9,000 more will get a similar alert just before midnight. If all goes well, the rest of ya will see v2.1 slide down starting on Thursday, though it looks as if patience will be your only friend as you await your turn. Head on past the break for the full memo, but don't get your hopes up too high -- wouldn't want to be let down <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/18/verizon-delays-android-2-1-rollout-to-motorola-droid-new-date-i/">again</a>, would you buttercup?<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/30/verizon-to-start-android-2-1-updates-to-motorola-droid-owners-to/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Verizon begins Android 2.1 update rollout for Motorola Droid</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/30/verizon-to-start-android-2-1-updates-to-motorola-droid-owners-to/">Verizon begins Android 2.1 update rollout for Motorola Droid</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 30 Mar 2010 11:51:00 EST. It's only officially sanctioned for users in Hong Kong and Macau for now, but judging by the inclusion of a Dutch language pack in the new firmware, it looks like it's the same stuff that will shortly be rolling out all across Europe as well. In addition to the funky live wallpapers, users will also get a new feature called Motorola Car Home -- a special interface for in-car usage -- along with some speed improvements. Now, we're not exactly sure what the rollout plan is for each nation, but Moto's Facebook page tells us we'll see an end to the Milestone's upgrade saga before March is through. The source contains a direct link to the fresh firmware file, and you can find a straightforward upgrade how-to at <em>Android World</em> below. We'll be right here for your upgrade stories.</div>

Oh, bollocks! After <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/16/verizon-posts-android-2-1-upgrade-details-for-droid/">hearing for days</a> that Verizon Wireless would be pushing out the highly anticipated Android 2.1 update to its stable of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/30/motorola-droid-review/">Droid</a> users, along comes this. Internal company documentation clearly states that the aforementioned update won't be going down today, and there's no clear indication of when it will. To quote: <br />
<blockquote>
<ul>
    <li><em>"The OTA software update for the Droid by Motorola is TBD. A new date will be communicated as soon as possible. <br />
    </em></li>
    <li><em>The 3/18 OTA software update will not happen as planned. A new date will be communicated as soon as possible." </em></li>
</ul>
</blockquote> We knew things were just too quiet after the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/17/droids-android-2-1-update-going-to-a-small-number-of-users-to/">noon hour</a>, and now we know why. An impromptu support group meeting has been scheduled for 1:30PM ET, though we're hearing the location is still being decided...<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/18/verizon-delays-android-2-1-rollout-to-motorola-droid-new-date-i/">Verizon delays Android 2.1 rollout to Motorola Droid, new date is TBD</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 18 Mar 2010 13:08:00 EST. Possibly confirming those leaks suggesting that the first volley of Droid updates to Android 2.1 <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/16/verizon-posts-android-2-1-upgrade-details-for-droid/">would be limited</a> to just a quarter million folks, Verizon just shot out a statement to let everyone know that the over-the-air push is "being deployed to a small number of Verizon Wireless test users tomorrow afternoon." Beyond that, no dates are given for the rest of us to get in on the action -- probably because Verizon and Motorola need to see how the first group manages before sending out the remainder -- so for the moment, just hope that you're one of these incredibly blessed "test users" and stay tuned.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/17/droids-android-2-1-update-going-to-a-small-number-of-users-to/">Droid's Android 2.1 update going to 'a small number' of users tomorrow</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 17 Mar 2010 14:49:00 EST. Chatter over the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/12/motorola-milestone-with-android-2-1-hitting-bulgaria-by-march-20/">Milestone's impending Android 2.1 update</a> has reached a rolling boil in recent days, but it's actually the Milestone's American cousin that's getting the official coverage today. That's right: Verizon's just posted details on the Droid's upgrade to Google's latest and greatest cut, and you've got the expected host of goodies including the new 3D Gallery app, voice-to-text, news and weather widgets, pinch-to-zoom support, "improved" pattern lock, and -- get this -- live wallpapers, something we'd originally thought Motorola might leave out. It appears to lack the <a href="http://engadget.com/tag/nexusone">Nexus One's</a> 3D app launcher (which we'd expected), but it's still pure gold for owners. Let us know when you've gotten it, eh?<br />
