The hack only works with "virgin" iPhones right now, and unlocking a 1.0.2 phone and updating to 1.1.1 will result in a bricked device, but the team says they'll be releasing a "revirginizer" for locked 1.1.1 phones soon. As always, hack at your own risk -- and don't expect future updates to go smoothly.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.tuaw.com/2007/10/16/iphone-dev-team-announces-free-unlock/">TUAW</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cellphones/" rel="tag">Cellphones</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/16/iphone-dev-team-releases-free-1-1-1-unlock/">iPhone dev team releases free 1.1.1 unlock</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 16 Oct 2007 18:23:00 EST. If you haven't already bitten the bullet and taken your unlocked iPhone down that scariest of paths, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/27/iphone-firmware-1-1-1-released-wifi-music-store-included/">1.1.1 update</a>, we're here to sort out a bit of the hearsay from the actual and fairly inconvenient truth. Your mileage may vary, and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/27/iphone-update-re-locking-handsets-disabling-3rd-party-apps/">isolated incidents of bricking</a> have occurred, but most people are just going to have a 3rd party-free, AT&amp;T-only iPhone in their pocket when the day is through, and bricking seems to be just as common for a virgin iPhones as for jailbroken ones. As for when we'll have <em>full</em> use of the iPhone again is unclear, but TUAW's Erica Sadun says "<a href="http://www.tuaw.com/2007/09/28/5-things-you-need-to-know-about-the-iphone-1-1-1-update/">don't expect a jailbreak anytime soon</a>," which doesn't seem promising. We've seen a couple of early versions of GUI iPhone SIM unlock apps from the open source community, but it looks like the iPhone Dev Team's got its proper release in order. Unfortunately, the app's source code won't be released for a couple days yet, so if you want to see how the Dev Team got from <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/11/iunlock-released-the-first-free-open-source-iphone-sim-unlock/">iUnlock</a> (and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/15/iunlock-reloaded-free-iphone-unlocking-for-dummies-now-availabl/">iUnlock Reloaded</a>) to their "final" anySIM solution, you'll have to wait a little while longer. In the mean time, we've <a href="http://www.engadget.com/videos/anySIM.zip">mirrored the tool here</a> on our super-fast server farm. Oh, and don't blame us if it doesn't work or bricks your phone -- especially because we've yet to test this thing.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/software/" rel="tag">Software</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/apple/" rel="tag">Apple</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/15/anysim-is-here-open-source-gui-iphone-unlock-app/">anySIM is here: open source GUI iPhone unlock app</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sat, 15 Sep 2007 21:27:00 EST.
